I wasn’t sure that I was going to have anything new on this list, but let’s be fair, I don’t remember last years list, so there most likely will be something new, and then I realize that there is definitely one new one.
1 Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
I love this movie because it’s the right balance of humor, action, and satire that just works really well. Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer knock it out of the park, and it works. It’s also a movie that takes place around Christmas, so clearly a Christmas movie. The writing is really well done and the movie is a lot of fun. Going off with lots of satire to the buddy cop and Lethal Weapon movies, if you like action movies, you’ll probably enjoy this one.
2. Avengers: Infinity War
I told you there would be a new one. I really really liked this movie. Again it blends action with some good humor. But mainly I loved it because it was so different. Yes, it had the massive super hero feel to the movie, but Thanos was a great bad guy. He isn’t the smartest bad guy in terms of his solution, but he really believes in what he’s doing and that what he’s doing is right. I could easily do a separate list of top 5 super hero movies as well, but Infinity War makes it to the movie list.
3 Dale and Tucker Vs Evil
Another satire, this one making fun of horror films. It’s done really well taking the expected tropes and turning them on their heads. It feels like a horror film, but then is just hilarious and Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine just are amazing in the film. Even if you’re not a fan of horror films, you’ll probably enjoy this film.
4 Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
A highly innovative movie being the first one to green screen everything and do pretty heavy digital effects on everything. Then Avatar came out about a week later. I like the camp and nostalgia that they can create in the film with the effects placed on the film. It feels like it should be a 1950’s Sci-Fi film, but it’s a bunch shinier. I know of plenty of people who don’t like this film all that well, but I really like.
5 Cabin the Woods
A horror film, but also a film that is somewhat satire. It’s hard to explain because it is very aware of the fact that it’s a horror film. And there are scenes in there that really take you out of the horror aspect, but they also still maintain a horror feel without it just being all goofy like Dale and Tucker vs Evil. Again a film that isn’t for everyone, but if you’re a horror buff there are plenty of cool moments where you can see what horror films they are pulling from.
It is really hard to just pick 5, plus 5 honorable mentions. When I went back and looked at my previous list, I realized what used to be my #1 movie for a long time wasn’t in my top 5 anymore, but I think that’s fair. It’s still an honorable mention film.
The Fearless Vampire Killers
Big Trouble in Little China
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
