Look Back – Highlights of a Nerdy 2020

Look Back – Highlights of a Nerdy 2020

I did this last year as well, and honestly, that had a pretty fun list. I think about the movies that came out, going to GenCon, and what I got through last year, this year seems like and does pale in comparison. That, of course,

Malts and Meeples – Pandemic Legacy Season 2 Game 1

Malts and Meeples – Pandemic Legacy Season 2 Game 1

Last night I kicked off a new Live Stream series playing Pandemic Legacy Season 2. This is the follow-up to Pandemic Legacy Season 1 that I’ve previously streamed. I talk a little about the differences that we’ll see going forward and I play through the

Malts and Meeples – Marvel Champions Spider-Man vs Rhino

Malts and Meeples – Marvel Champions Spider-Man vs Rhino

Last night was the first official stream at the new place, keep in mind, I obviously did a test stream already this week, but good news, I’ve figured out a few improvements for this new one. The game was Marvel Champions as I took the starter Spider-Man deck vs the starter Rhino deck just to demonstrate what you get and how to play the game out of the box.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/blv1nI5vrRs" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This isn’t really teaching you how to play the game, though I do try and talk about that some, but also an if you should play the game. I want to give you an idea of how the rules work and how the game works, but you won’t be able to play the game off of what I was doing. The reason I say that is because I know I’ll say or do something wrong, which I did, I forgot about Spider-Mans ability when he is on his hero side, so we’ll have see if that made a difference in the outcome.

For a beer, I had a Bourbon Barrel Coffee Stout. I have to say, it was a bit disappointing, not to say that it was a bad beer, but that style of beer has some expectations on my behalf, and this was underwhelming. The flavor was fine and you got a bit of the coffee flavor, but I was expecting something with a lot of flavor. And the flavor on this was just fine, it was just small and didn’t fulfill what the name and style promised.

So I don’t know what I’m going to play yet next week, I’ll be posting that probably at the start of next week for Wednesday’s Stream. I will say, I do have Pandemic Legacy Season 2 on the way, and I know I want to play through all of that, so that’ll be what I stream for a while coming up. I know campaign games aren’t always the most interesting, but I do have fun streaming them. I will probably play more Marvel Champions next week.

The Return to Malts and Meeples

The Return to Malts and Meeples

So we’re coming back around after two weeks off with a revamped set-up for Malts and Meeples, a big new gaming room, so we’re going to talk about some plans for Malts and Meeples going forward and what I’m hoping to do. I’ve clearly done

Point of Order: Reichbusters Projekt Vril

Point of Order: Reichbusters Projekt Vril

There are some games out there that when you see them, you know it’s probably going to be a game that you will like. And for that reason, you might not want to pick it up because there’s a lot of stuff for the game.

Brick or Back – The Night Cage

Brick or Back – The Night Cage

You and four others wake up in the dark, only able to crawl and separated in a labyrinth with nothing but a candle to light your way. Can you avoid the monsters and ever changing labyrinth and find the key to escape?

Pros

  • Cooperative
  • Horror Themed
  • Tense
  • Great price point
  • Known company
  • Tough to beat
  • Looks like Nic Cage on the cover instead of Night Cage

Cons

  • Fairly abstract
  • Horror Themed
  • Tough to beat

Thoughts on the Page

This is a well laid out page that gives you a solid idea of what the game is like. It does a good job with that primarily black, white, grey and sepia tone to give it that horror vibe to it. And it does a good job of laying out the game play as well.

They’ve done a good job with the price point, not too high for what you’re getting and seems extremely reasonable where the cost plus shipping will be what you’d find it for at retail. And I like that they have a premium level that is just upgrades to components or a creepy soundtrack, not game play related.

And I think that they’ve done a good job with the stretch goals. There is a good balance of game play additions, like new types of monsters, pits, etc. but nothing that massively changes the game and nothing that makes it feel like they are just adding stuff, so no bloat in the game. Plus there are also some nice component upgrades as well to it.

Bonus Video

Bonus video content from GloryHoundd on YouTube, she and DrGloryHogg did a playthrough of the game via TableTop Simulator that they got from Smirk & Dagger

Back or Brick

So when I first saw this game, it was going to be a brick for me. The concept seemed interesting enough, but I wasn’t sure about the game play and the cover, I make Nic Cage jokes about it because it looks a bit like that to me. But as I dug more into it and they talked about it on GloryHoundd YouTube channel and did the play through, I saw the intensity of the game. This is one of those stressful cooperative games where, because the labyrinth is always changing and the candle is burning down, you are going to feel a version of the pressure that the theme is trying to promote. So while I don’t feel like I should back for the soundtrack as well, I did end up up backing it, so it’s a Back for me.

How about for you, is this game a Back or a Brick?

Malts and Meeples: Tainted Grail Game 3 Playthrough Part 1

Malts and Meeples: Tainted Grail Game 3 Playthrough Part 1

It’s been a couple of weeks, but I’m back again with more Tainted Grail. Last time I had said that I was considering playing ahead to the point where I had lost last time, but I decided that I was going to take more time

Malts and Meeples: Tainted Grail Game 2 Part 3

Malts and Meeples: Tainted Grail Game 2 Part 3

Join me in the lands of Avalon again, I’m still on Chapter 2 for a little bit longer of Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. How do I fair this time, do you I keep on getting myself stuff in combats that I shouldn’t? Should

Malts and Meeples: Tainted Grail Game 2 Part 2

Malts and Meeples: Tainted Grail Game 2 Part 2

Arev travels further into the world of Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon. I continue my journey into the grim dark fantasy setting that is the land of Avalon and the Wyrdness that is pushing humans off of the land. Can Arev figure out where to go next now that he’s found the secrets of driving back the Wyrdness, with Menhir, if only for a short time?

Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon is a giant story driven game by Awaken Realms where you are struggling as an almost hero against the lands, the monsters, and the wary people who make up the land of Avalon. To do this you must hunt for food, but more importantly explore many a location in search for answers to the problems that are facing you. In exploring you delve into an Exploration Journal and make choices that will affect your story going forward.

I, also, always have a beer on hand. So last nights beer was Size 7, and IPA from Steel Toe Brewing in St. Louis Park, MN. I like it a lot because it’s a bigger IPA checking in at 7% ABV and 77 IBU. With it having a slightly higher ABV than some IPA’s, it isn’t too malty though, but unless you’re in MN, probably not an easy beer to get your hands on.

Finally, if you are enjoying the content that I’m putting out with my solo game plays, please consider giving me a follow and a subscribe. The first is for Twitch and the second on YouTube. For YouTube views, comments, and subscribers can all help more people find my videos and hopefully help more people learn about new games.

Malts and Meeples: Tainted Grail Game 2 Part 1

Malts and Meeples: Tainted Grail Game 2 Part 1

Back with some more Tainted Grail by Awaken Realms. This time, I have a better plan for what I was going to do in the grim dark world of Avalon. Can I keep the Menhir lit and keep the wyrdness at bay, or will I
