Go On Board: Cyberpunk 2077

A cooperative game set in the Cyberpunk 2077 world. I’m curious about this because Go On Board has made some fun games. This one definitely looks more interesting than the CMON one to me. Though, I am curious about that one as well. For me, this one that I’m going to follow. I also plan to dive into it as more information comes out. It’s an action adventure game, which I like, and, like I said, cooperative.

But Cyberpunk, for me, is a game, video game, that I am not that familiar with. But it’s supposed to surpass what is in The Witcher Old World. It has a campaign, which, we know I like them. For me a concern, there is a real time element to it, I need to see what it is.

Skytear Horde

This is a reprint of a game that I really enjoy. I already went in on the “big box”. Is this going to fit in the big box, what do I need to know about this one. I want to get my new stuff and play that. But they are introducing something that I want. It’s going to be a campaign game now. It’s a few games, so as a solo experience, it’s going to be a shorter campaign. By campaign, more it’s probably strung together games.

Yup, this is going to be a hard one for me to pass on. I like that element of having a campaign, and there is going to be levelling up, which is something that I’m always there for. It’s supposed to be a rogue-like experience, so probably like a Slay the Spire. The previous one is coming in May, this one will launch after it.

Rock Manor Games: StarDriven Gateway

I enjoy what Rock Manor games does, so, great, I’m going to be interested in another one. It’s going to be a space exploration, completing missions, possibly pick-up and deliver. How it’s trying to differentiate itself from other games in that you need to really manage your crew. It is, I believe going to be competitive, but there is a solo option. There are going to be different scenarios that you can play, but it’s going to have different goals. And some of the scenarios are going to be cooperative as well, which is interesting. I think it sounds like an interesting twist, and a dangerous game for me, because I’ll want to check it out.

Mindbug

It’s going to be a continuation of Mindbug, Mindbug is a game that I own, but I need to play. This is the first one where it doesn’t interest me that much. And that’s mainly because I don’t know if it’s a game for me. There are elements that sound quite intriguing, but it isn’t one that stands too intriguing to me. Mainly, will it be something that I want to keep playing as mainly a two player game. I own too many two player card games to play, several of them TCG’s, Mindbug gives me that feel.

Dragori Games: Odalin – Dungeons of Doom

It’s a dungeon crawler, is this whole Feast just for me or mainly for me? I need to get my Tanares Adventures and try that to see if it’s a company that I want to checkout more of their games. This one looks very cool and sounds fun. One of the elements that they talk about in the game is how you can get a lot of items. It’s going to be a campaign game, but with some random dungeons and play it as a one off. And you might want to go back and farm or go back to one to find a secret passage. It’s another big dungeon crawl campaign, so of course I want it.

Moon Crab Games – Leviathan Wilds

This is a reprint and expansion of the game. It’s mainly, I think a solo game. And the game itself looks really intriguing. However, it’s not one that I believe has delivered, from the sounds of it. I think that it might be one that I really enjoy. But I’m not going to be jumping into quite yet. But as an experience of the game, I expect it to be one that I’d enjoy.

Phalanx Games – Hannibal and Hamilcar

I know nothing about this game, but it’s not a new one. I think I’ve seen a bit about it, it’s about 25 years old. For me, this doesn’t really feel like a game that I’d enjoy. There are probably some extra fancy stuff, but not that interesting for me. It’s going to be split into two boxes after they had put in one box. And, since there are minis, it’s time to make it fancy with some metal minis.

Quined Games – Stupor Mundi

Another historically themed game, and it’s going to be a strategy game. This is a euro game that is going to be leaning into that beige look. For me, it’d be a try before I buy, not that it might not be a good game, but it’s hard for me to judge a lot of these games without playing them. I find that I like them, but which ones get played the most, it’s tough. But it sounds like a fairly interactive game, it’s not going to be a solo, you do your own thing euro game.

Metis Creative – Historica Arcanum: Cults of London

This is a company that mainly has done RPG’s, but it takes their RPG setting. This is an asymmetric deck building game. I don’t think I’d have thought it was going to be like that. The aesthetic looks very intriguing. It’s a competitive game, though, which isn’t a bad thing. But it sounds like it’s going to be a highly social game, kind of that backstabbing feel. Which, I worry, might mean that it is a take that sort of game, which isn’t what I’m really looking for. If it’s not too much backstabbing, it might work, but from the sound of it, I don’t love it. I like the setting, though.

Bad Crow – Avatar: The Journey of Aang

It’s a cooperative journey of a game, I am super excited. I love Avatar, my wife loves it more than I do. Is this going to be a game that we can really dive into, I hope so. Man alive, this is an exciting announcement for me. I also wonder it’s going to be with the story that has existed. It takes a little bit to get to how it plays. It does sound like it’s going to be the main story of the show. And the players are going to be training Aang, helping him to get ready.

That itself sounds fun, as you learn new things and become better as being a bender. Plus then there are going to be press your luck elements that are going to be the different challenges that you do. It has a solo mode as a 1-4 player cooperative game. But there is a competitive mode as well, which is interesting, but probably one that I wouldn’t play too much.

Final Thoughts

And that’s all of the games. This is truly a feast from Gamefound. For me, a few of them standout. Avatar: The Journey of Aang is probably my top one. It’s an IP that I really enjoy. It isn’t my favorite, but it is up there in terms of shows that I’ve seen. Likewise, more Skytear Horde sounds fun, Cyberpunk 2077, Odalin, and StarDriven Gateway all sound like they do things that I’d very much enjoy.

Top 10 Games I’d Crowdfund Again

So, you can really tell what sorts of games I tend to back on crowdfunding from this list. Though, it isn’t completely true. The big thing with making this list is that I know a lot of the smaller games I can pick-up at retail. So that definitely influenced my list.

I think if we were to talk about the games that might get played more often, it’d be a different list of my games backed on Kickstarter and Gamefound. But for the ones that I’d look at now and definitely go all in on, or go in heavily on again, definitely going to be those bigger campaign games.

As part of the conversation with the chat, join live and you can be part of it as well, we did end up talking about some of the smaller games that I backed as well. There are some that I’d be remiss if I didn’t want to back them again. And at the very end, even, I went and tracked down a few I know I will be keeping an eye on. So a lot of crowdfunding was covered but mainly about those 10 (cheated with an 11) games.

As for next Monday, I am not sure what that stream is going to be yet. I think I might be looking to play a game of some sort. Most likely a smaller game so I can chat, but there are a number of games I am going to want to get to the table soon. There is also a chance that I will be doing an unboxing. I believe that I have Etherfields coming in soon as well as Marvel Dice Throne, and then not too long until Oathsworn. So I can unbox a lot.

Anticipated Crowdfunding Games

10. Quantum Shock

The one that I consider least likely to come out. The latest that they have said about it, this was in 2021 mind you, that they were going to be launching in 2022. The game is still in that get notified at launch stage. And when asked in January and June about a timeline, there is no response/information.

But Quantum Shock very much falls into that category of a game that I’d be interested in. It is cooperative, sci-fi, and horror. Three things that I really love. And the aesthetic, at least of the box artwork is interesting to me. I’m poking about to find more information on the game because I’d love to see what the whole look and play of the game is.

9. Moon

From the company that brought us Villagers and Streets, they now have a new game coming, Moon. I don’t know much about the game or about their games in general. But I know the look of the games, and Moon looks amazing in terms of the artwork and graphic design. That is what has me interested. Generally, I feel like my thoughts have been with Villagers and Streets, try before I buy, but Moon, if it looks interesting enough, might be a spot to jump into Sinister Fish Games.

8. Sea of Legends: Vengeance of the Empires

An expansion for a game that I own, Sea of Legends. This is going to be a big pirate adventure game. I love the idea of a big sprawling pirate game. And while I haven’t played this one yet, because I’ve heard the app was getting improved upon, I do really want to play my copy. That is likely going to determine if I back this game.

Sea of Legends, like I said, is a big pirate game. You pick a Captain, Lover, and Nemesis, and that drives your story in the game. It is a competitive game, but I like that the story of each character weaves together which intrigues me. I hope that when I play it, I’ll love it. I thought that Merchants and Marauders might be the big pirate game for me, but that one fell flat. And Seafall didn’t seem like pirates.

7. Drop Bears

You heard about this one last week. Drop Bears, based off of the Australian legends for tourists, are basically bears that look like koalas. But instead of being all cute, they drop out of trees and attack with big pointy teeth and claws, if you aren’t careful. I’m very curious about this one. Again, a horror them, which I like and I really like the legend. I’m hoping to get my hands on some press release content if I can to cover it before it launches.

6. Globetrotting

Globetrotting is on here because of the toy factor. But from the same company that makes Canvas, Globetrotting seems to be a roll and write where you are connecting things on a 3D globe. Just that toy factor is great, so I want to see it, play it because of that. A game with good toy factor might not be a great game, but it does make me interested. And Canvas has very good toy factor as well with it’s artwork and is a good game. So I want to see what this one is.

5. Cyberpunk 2077: Gangs of Night City

Again, another one that I’ve mentioned before. CMON is doing a game set in the Cyberpunk world. I don’t know a ton more about it than that. I’d guess this game will have a lot of minis, a lot of expansions, but probably be a fun beer and pretzels type of game.

For me, I wish that it sounded like it had more story. But the theme of cyberpunk is cool. I like games like Shadowrun, or that setting, for that reason. So I’ll be curious to know what this one looks like. Area control is also a mechanism that I like quite well. However, I want more going on in a game than that, so one that I’ll be keeping an eye on.

4. Trick Shot

This one is a reprint of a game that is already out. Trick Shot is a hockey game, very hard to find right now, that comes with minis. I don’t know a ton about how it plays, but generally reviews seem pretty favorable. And the idea of a game where you play hockey seems like a good amount of fun to me.

I would love to watch a video of this being played. My main concern about the game is that it’ll be too slow. Hockey, as a sport, is a fast moving game. Baseball works okay for board games because it is a slower moving sport. But Hockey, Basketball, Soccer, and Football are all harder for me to get behind because they move fast. But we’ll see with Trick Shot, because it looks fun.

3. Stonesaga

OOMM games is putting out a lot of things that interest me. I backed Mytwind. I want Stars of Akarios eventually but it is spendy to get right now. It isn’t that I expect it to get cheaper, but it hopefully will be available for a bit. But Stonesaga is a cooperative legacy game. That right there makes it interesting to me.

Plus it has a story that unfolds over time, also interesting to me. And it can be played solo. It seems to be about building up a society and your world over generations. But of course, as a legacy game, the world remembers what you do and changes and grows the story as you go.

2. Tainted Grail: Kings of Ruin

Top two were easy to pick. Firstly, an expansion, though I believe a standalone expansion, for Tainted Grail. I love Tainted Grail. I am playing through the third of the stories in the original crowdfunding campaign right now. And I love each story.

Kings of Ruin is something I didn’t know I wanted. And I do not need Kings of Ruin. But I absolutely want it because I love Tainted Grail. This is a story driven game in a grim dark fantasy world around Arthurian legend. It just works well for me and more story in that world isn’t a bad thing, there is just so much content.

1. Rogue Angels: Legacy of the Burning Suns

Rogue Angels is my easy #1 game coming to crowdfunding hopefully in the next few months. And I should soon have some more content coming out on it. I just need to split up some video that I did with a couple other content creators and the designer playing a scenario of the game. You can already see Rogue Angels game play on Malts and Meeples (or below).

But I adore my plays thus far of Rogue Angels. The characters are great. The story is fun, and it is a challenging game. The best way I can describe it and this is a very high compliment is that it is a game that isn’t too complex to play. But, every decision that you make has a ton of depth. You can’t just walk into a room full of bad guys and expect it to work perfectly for you. So how do you plan what is best and work together as a team?

Final Thoughts

I am sure that I missed some big Kickstarter or Gamefound campaigns coming up. I looked for what I could. And I didn’t do anything that you can still late pledge or is out on Kickstarter currently. There are some strong games coming up, and I know there will be a lot more that I don’t know about. That is what them monthly content is for. Plus then the videos that Tantrum House and BoardGameCo put out twice a month or monthly on upcoming Kickstarters.

One that I really would love to put on the list is Slay the Spire by Contention Games. I know they want to get it right before it launches. But Slay the Spire is another game that was supposed to be in 2021, like Quantum Shock, and I haven’t heard anything recently about it. Looking on Board Game Geek it appears they still plan for this year. But it’s not on the list because it was Spring of 2021 and then on and on delayed and reworks. But if they get it right that’ll be awesome.

This happened to CMON who had to raise their shipping costs a lot. Granted, probably could have done better to start. But shipping a massive game like Marvel Zombies is exceedingly expensive. And then Oathsworn, they put in $100,000 of their own and still needed people to help offset the shipping costs. Thankfully, the community came around them, and besides the shipping cost offset people have donated probably around $60-70k to them, so they don’t need to spend as much of their own money.

All of that is to say, Kickstarter and Gamefound have been a bit slower. But I came up with 5 that I’m at least a little interested in. Though most are only on the “might” be on Crowdfunding in June.

5. Cyberpunk 2077

CMON just released a trailer for this. Based off of the video game and more so off of the RPG, this is going to be a Cyberpunk board game in both senses of it. The game looks intriguing but I need to see more. Generally Quackalope gets the game to show off for CMON, but that hasn’t happened yet.

And for me, I am interested in Cyberpunk, it is a theme for board game, video game, and RPG that I am interested in. But it is another CMON game. I need to be careful with those campaigns. And I found, for example, with Massive Darkness, even though retail might cost a little bit more than on Kickstarter, and you get a little less, overall I saved myself money.

4. Aeon’s End: Past & Future

Plus, if Aeon’s End: Past & Future comes out, I’ll be getting that for sure. And I might even finally add on the cards so that I can keep all the characters set-up always. But this is the next installment in Aeon’s End. The past legacy game wrapped up the story arc that they were going through, so this is, I believe, a bridging story or bridging nemesis to connect what has happened, and wrap that up, kind of a third act, and then going for future.

3. Umbrella Academy

I don’t know much about this one. I think it might be a relaunch of a game that came out and then didn’t do that well on Kickstarter so they are coming back? Mainly I am interested because of the theme. Umbrella Academy is a solid comic book, and a better show. However, it isn’t my favorite show or comic, so I’m curious about it. But I suspect that Umbrella Academy won’t be for me.

2. Drop Bears

Next up we have Drop Bears, and this is the last of them that might be coming out in June. It could easily be later. If you are not familiar with Drop Bears, they are an Australian legend about bears that live in trees and then drop on you. Which, that is goofy and fun, and is a horror theme for a game. I like horror themed board games, so I want to know how this plays. Could be some goofy fun.

1. Runescape Kingdoms

And finally, the only that for sure will be in June. Mainly because it is live right now, though might have gone live at the end of May, like May 31st. This is based off of Runescape and that world. The game itself hasn’t intrigued me that much, and I’ve looked at it. I have no plans to back it. But because of the theme, I was curious about it. I think that it might be a good game, but one that isn’t for me as I’m being very picking on Kickstarters right now.

Final Thoughts

Normally I’d expect Kickstarter to start ramping up again about now. With Gen Con two months away. Origins I believe this weekend. UKGE having happened the past weekend. It is a chance for Kickstarter creators to get their games out in front of people and time it up with the launch. But that isn’t happening right now.

Like I said, it has a ton to do with inflation, shipping, and generally prices on everything. Until stuff becomes a bit more stable, it’s really hard for companies to produce games. Or they have to switch so that they are getting a game on crowdfunding that is immediately ready to be produced so things are as accurate as possible. I hope by the end of the year that things will start to stabilize again. But I suspect that 2022 is going to be fairly slow on Kickstarter and Gamefound.

Cyberpunk 2077 – Keanu Reeves

That joke will never get old. But in all seriousness, that’s really one of the largest reasons. I also really like the idea of a game that is in a Cyberpunk setting. Right now I’m enjoying Horizon: Zero Dawn, which isn’t cyberpunk, but has some interesting cyber elements to it, and I am curious to see a game take on something a bit more focused into the genre. I really hope that it is a well crafted game with a good story.

Ghost of Tsushima – A game that is set in Japan where you are playing as a Samurai sounds interesting to me. I also like games that have fighting, but don’t require me to poorly shoot things, since that is not my strong suit. I hope that this game has a bit of a slower feel to it, so that you get what seems more like a Samurai aesthetic as compared to a hack and slash game. Don’t know a ton about it, but definitely is one that’s caught my eye.

Diablo IV – This is a game that I might get in 2021, why is it on this list, because it’s coming out in 2020. Why would I wait, because Diablo III was unplayable at the launch. Things were changing almost every day, and one character build would go from poor, to overpowered to unplayable, to poor in the span of two weeks. Now, hopefully that won’t be the case with this one, but I’m going to take a wait and see approach before I get this loot heavy game.

NIOH 2 – Apparently I like the Japanese aesthetic, because it’s the second one on the list. This one is based off of Dark Souls in terms of play style, so I’m assuming it’s going to be punishing. Maybe they’ll put in a mode for the level of video gamer that I am. I’m more curious to hear about this one when it comes out and how the game actually plays before jumping at it.

Marvel’s Avengers – I’m curious about this one, but I’m not that confident that it’s going to be amazing. The footage thus far is just off, mainly because they decided to keep the characters looking close to the MCU versions of the characters without it being exact so they don’t have to pay for image rights. If the game play is good, that’ll make up for the odd looks but it’s a very much wait and see for me.

Iron Man VR – This is probably my most anticipated game, maybe after Cyberpunk 2077, but one that I’m not that likely to play because it’s VR and I get motion sick at times, but also because it’s VR and I don’t have a Playstation VR set-up. If it gets good reviews, I might get a Playstation VR set-up because there’s also Boardlands 2 in VR, but I’m not holding my breath. I’m just really curious for the technology and what it’ll mean for video games and is it there to do it well.

I came up with more games than I thought I might. Like I said, I tend not to buy games right away because I already have too many to play. For the video gamers in the audience, what is the standout game for you? I know I skipped over some big titles.
