I take a look at that topic on Malts and Meeples

The post Malts and Meeples – When Do You Get Rid of Board Games first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
It’s a really popular topic right now. People like to get rid of board games to show off how their collection is only the board games that they really truly love. To me that is a bit silly. I think there are good reasons to get rid of board games, at times, but to show off a smaller collection, that isn’t one of them. So I dive into why I get rid of board games, sometimes, and how maybe a healthier was about thinking your collection might be.

Plus I unbox a new board gamer order with had four expansions in it. And I go off on some tangents, not about beer this time, but about a board game that stayed in my collection.

The Topic

I wanted to touch on getting rid of board games, because it is a popular topic. And well, I hope that I can add some insight to the conversation. When I see these videos, too often, it comes off as bragging that people have nice and trim collections. This is very much a pushback on a previous mindset of having a massive board game collection.

But, to me, neither of these are healthy. I think there are good reasons to get rid of board games. But showing off that you are better, that isn’t a good reason. That is a seemingly responsible thing that actually creates barriers to entry into our hobby. New gamers often buy a lot of games, I know I did, and I still do. So when they see people getting rid of games they feel like they are doing it wrong.

I go with a few different reasons to possibly get rid of a game.

  1. Other Games in the Same Category/Genre I like Better
  2. Space
  3. Don’t Have the Right Group

You can find out more why in the video.

Unboxing

Expansions for three different games were unboxed last night. You can see the Point of Order that I did for these games and posted yesterday. I’m excited for all of these expansions. I think most so I’m excited to get Terraforming Mars to the table. It’s a bigger more complex game than Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition, and I’m interested to try that.

The Beer

Another can of Spray Tan from Outstate Brewing up in Fergus Falls, MN. This is really a go to summer beer. It is tart and has a good flavor that works really well on a hot day. During the summer in Minnesota, I tend to drink mainly sours and IPA’s with a few other random beers thrown in. Just because it helps cut the hot and humid. During the winter, on the other hand, it still can be IPA’s and Sours, but very often I will dive into the big porters and stouts that feel like more of a hearty drink during the cold.

Upcoming Videos

So only for sure one video coming up in the next week and a half. Two weeks from now I’ll be back with another Top 10 list, and I think I’m going to do my Top 10 either Family/Gateway games or Roll and Writes, haven’t decided what which yet.

And on Wednesday, 8 PM Central, I’m going to be streaming the second chapter of Aeon’s End Legacy. I’ll probably miss, though, next Wednesday’s stream because of having family in town.

Though, I do plan on putting out another 3 Reasons Buy/Not Buy video. You can find all the videos in that series on this playlist as they come out.

Delve into a world shrouded in magic and monsters and join me as I play through the Legacy version of Aeon’s End from Indie Boards and Cards. How will I do as I fight the giant nemesis who come through the breach and create my own characters and develop my own strategies? And find out if this legacy game is one for you. Join me down at the table over on Malts and Meeples.

The Game

As I said above, Aeon’s End Legacy is a legacy, cooperative, deck building game from Indie Boards and Cards. In the base game of Aeon’s End you are fighting giant nemesis who are coming through the breach and threatening the down of Gravehold. As a breach mage, it is your job to stop the monster, either forcing it back into the breach or killing it without letting the town of Gravehold perish, or having all of the mages perish.

Aeon’s End Legacy has been on my shelf for a bit to play. I am glad to be finally getting it to the table as Aeon’s End is really one of my favorite cooperative games, and games in general. There are a lot of interesting decisions to make in the base game, and with a legacy version, I know that I am going to have even more. So I am one chapter in now and ready to play again.

The Drink

Didn’t talk too much about the drink last night. I was drinking a whiskey from Panther Distillery up in west central Minnesota. It is one that was specifically distilled for Fergus Falls, MN, my home town. It has a nice flavor, almost a hint of a chocolate note to it and it was also the last of the bottle. I didn’t feel like having a beer last night since Minnesota is pretty cool right now after out heat wave earlier this summer. Whiskey just seems like the proper drink for a cooler day.

What’s Coming Up

Well, next Wednesday is going to be another game of Aeon’s End Legacy. See where my two breach mages end up in this unfolding adventure.

However, before that, we have a stream on Monday. It’s going to be a Topic Stream and we are going to be talking about, getting rid of games from your collection.

Plus, there should be a new 3 Reasons Why/Why Not coming out as I look at another campaign game, Tainted Grail, and give you three reasons why you should get it and three why you shouldn’t.

Malts and Meeples: Marvel United Enter the Spider-Verse https://nerdologists.com/2021/04/malts-and-meeples-marvel-united-enter-the-spider-verse/ https://nerdologists.com/2021/04/malts-and-meeples-marvel-united-enter-the-spider-verse/#respond Thu, 08 Apr 2021 13:08:04 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=5538 I entered into the Spider-Verse yesterday on Malts and Meeples as I played through one of the Spider-Man focused Marvel United expansions.

The post Malts and Meeples: Marvel United Enter the Spider-Verse first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Take a dive into the Spider-Verse with me on last nights Malts and Meeples live stream. I take Spider-Ham and Ghost Spider up against the Green Goblin as I break out the Marvel United expansions and see what the new characters and new villains are capable of. Will we defeat the Green Goblin or will he get the best of us?

The Game

As I said, the game I played was Marvel United. In particular I broke out the Enter the Spider-Verse expansion. I thought about doing the Tales of Asgard expansion instead, but when the choice was between Spider-Ham and Beta Ray Bill, I think I made a solid choice. I played the game as if it was a two handed cooperative experience versus a purely solo game, though I talk about how the solo mode works for the game.

Marvel United is a cooperative game where you take 2-4 heroes up against a villain. You are trying to stop their evil plan. You fight thugs, thwart plans, and rescue civilians until you can track down the villain and attack them. What that means, is basically you have three things to try and complete. After the first one is done the villain becomes more active, after the second one you can start beating up the villain, and you need to take out the villain, at least in the case of the Green Goblin.

The Beer

Yesterday was National Beer Day, and while I was a bit distracted in my description, I had a brew from Outstate Brewing in Fergus Falls, MN, my home town. I picked it up when I went up for Easter. A New England style Hazy IPA, it is pretty solid. I like IPA’s a lot, but I don’t always love hazy IPA’s. Too often they taste like someone dumped fruit juice into an IPA, which is how a lot of them actually are made. That is too sweet for me and too fruity, I want a bit of bitter or tart when I drink a fruity beer. The beer name was Edge Catcher, and unfortunately it’ll be hard to find unless you are in that area of Minnesota as Outstate Brewing was founded right before the pandemic and has very limited distribution.
