We’re just getting to the end of the bottom half of games in my Top 100 Games (of all time) 2025 Edition. What games make it onto 60 to 51. I talk a bit about the stats for the Top 100 Games (of all time) and what percentage of the games I’ve played/rated make the list. Just to put the numbers into a better frame, I am at 689 games played, slightly lower than I remembered, probably because of expansion. So my Top 100Games (of all time) is 14% of the games that I’ve played. So without further ado, here are games 60 through 51.

60. Trinket Trove

Trinket Trove

Publisher: GameHead
Designer: Rocco Privetera

Buy Trinket Trove

I love how Trinket Trove has pretty simple rules. But it is a game that offers more than just simple game play. You collect cards in your hand that will be your score at the end of the game. There is a twist, though, as those cards you also use to bid on other cards. So you need to bid to get more cards or get cards that you want, but that means you mess up your hand. I think that little twist is clever as well as being able to take the cards others have bid to make for a really fun game.

59. Vampire: The Masquerade – CHAPTERS

Vampire the Masquerade Chapters by Flyos Games

Publisher: FLYOS
Designers: Thomas Flippi, Gary Paitre

Buy Vampire: The Masquerade – CHAPTERS

Now to another one of those big adventure games that I love, we have Vampire: The Masquerade – CHAPTERS. This is set in the World of Darkness/Vampire: The Masquerade RPG setting. And it is a scenario driven adventure game. Now all the scenarios chain together, so it is meant more as a GM-less RPG sort of setting. I like the simplicity in which it plays. And I think balancing things like hunger and abilities is interesting in the game. The story is the element that really gets me though, as the combat itself is pretty simple.

58. Five Tribes: The Djinns of Naqala

Five Tribes

Publisher: Days of Wonder

Buy Five Tribes is Not Available Currently

This mancala style game is going to give you a ton of ways to score points. And I like that tension of trying to figure out a good move on your turn. Now, I know for some that might introduce some analysis paralysis and there are people I won’t play it with. But I like that puzzle of figuring out what I think is a good move for me and dropping off workers until I get to that last spot. I also like that everything gives you points in the game as that makes even a less than perfect turn still give you something.

57. Too Many Bones

Too Many Bones

Publisher: Chip Theory Games
Designers: Josh J Carlson, Adam Carlson

Buy Too Many Bones

Another adventure game on the list, I own so much stuff for Too Many Bones. This one is about the Gearlocs that you have and leveling them up. Each one is going to play differently. Some of them might let you level up archery as you unlock new dice, others might start to build bombs that you can use in combat. But this game is one with a great flow. You do an adventure piece, you fight some bad guys, you level up and then you repeat. You do that until you feel that you are ready to face off against the boss, and if you are lucky, you are ready and can win.

56. First-Class Letters

First Class Letters

Publisher: GameHead

Buy First-Class Letters

I love roll and write games, and I like word games. This one is a bit of both. You roll letters and you need to come up with words that use them. But there is a twist to that because there is a letter that you can’t use as well. And of course that is going to be a common letter to make it tricky. To add to that, there are some spots where they set the letter the word must start with. And all the words at the end need to be in alphabetical order. There is a bunch going on, but not too much to ruin the fun.

55. Super Fantasy Brawl

Super Fantasy Brawl

Publisher: Mythic Games

Super Fantasy Brawl is Currently Unavailable

I don’t love all fighting games. There are a few that I find great, and Super Fantasy Brawl is one of them. This is a game of fighting against an opponent to knock out their characters and complete objectives. But what I love about the game is the simplicity of the play. I play three cards a turn and do their actions, one for each color. Or, if I use a color for a reaction on my opponents turn, then it’s two cards on my turn. I also like that you score objectives at the start of your turn. So you need to hold that spot through your opponents turn.

54. Century: Golem Edition

Century Spice Road Golem

Publisher: Plan B Games
Designer: Emerson Matsuuchi

Buy Century: Golem Edition

Century: Golem Edition is a great hand management engine building game. Each turn is simple, but the better you are at figuring out how to create a combo with the cards in your hand, the better you’ll do. It’s all about getting games and leveling up those games to get Golems, who are points, in the game. You can get the regular version of this as well, it’s the same game, but I love the Golem artwork and the gems in this are just more fun.

53. Pandemic Legacy Season 1

Pandemic Legacy

Publisher: Z-Man Games
Designers: Rob Daviau, Matt Leacock

Buy Pandemic Legacy Season 1

This one is for all the Pandemic Games. I love the Pandemic System, though I haven’t played base Pandemic in quite a while. Mainly because I think that Pandemic Legacy Season 1 and Season 2 are so good. The system just works and the story that you get within the legacy games is great. I even played Pandemic Legacy Season 1 solo on Malts and Meeples early on. So you can see that there, if you want to see how it went for me. I almost feel ready to play it again. If legacy isn’t your thing, than maybe Star Wars, Warhammer, or Lovecraftian horrors will work.

52. Mesozooic

Mesozooic

Publisher: Z-Man Games
Designers: Florian Fay, Alexander Ortloff-Tang

Mesozooic is Currently Unavailable

Back to back Z-Man Games on the list, but Mesozooic is very different from Pandemic Legacy. This one is a small little drafting game where you draft eleven cards to make your zoo. But those cards, you don’t get to decide where they fit in your zoo. Instead, you shuffle them up and then then a sliding puzzle, you race to get them in place in 45 seconds. You do that draft and slide puzzle three times and whomever has the best zoos at the end of that is the winner of the game. It’s silly fun and I like it as something really different.

51. Deception: Murder in Hong Kong

Deception Murder in Hong Kong

Publisher: Grey Fox Games
Designer: Tobey Ho

Buy Deception: Murder in Hong Kong

Finally wrapping up with #51 we have Deception: Murder in Hong Kong. This is the one social deduction game that I like, and that is because there is deduction as well. You start to piece together the clues from the Forensic Scientist to figure out the murder weapon and clue. Of course the murder and accomplice are trying to keep you away from that, and the witness is trying to subtly point you in the right direction. It’s just a great time and there is always a story in this game.

Join the forces of the werewolves in a dark and gritty world. How will you shape the story and the world in this game, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Retaliation based off of the RPG from Flyos Games.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/flyosgames/werewolf-the-apocalypse-retaliation?ref=discovery_category_newest

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Retaliation

Compared to some of the games I talk about, I know less about this game. There are a few reasons, though, why I’m looking at this one on crowdfunding, but we’ll get to them later. Let’s talk about what I know of the game play.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Retaliation, hence forth called Werewolf, is going to be an adventure game, an RPG in a box type of game. You take on the role of a werewolf who can either be in werewolf form, human form, or chrinos form – think standing up werewolf versus fully wolfed out. And you will change between those as the story and the moon leads you.

So you will be adventuring, exploring locations, interacting with people and then fighting monsters or whomever is standing in your way. If it is like Vampire: The Masquerade – CHAPTERS, also by Flyos Games, there is going to be a lot of story to go through. And while Vampire: The Masquerade is about intrigue and keeping the masquerade up, Werewolf is going to be more in your face and violent.

What I’m Worried About?

There is one thing I am concerned about with this. It bills itself as a dark game. Now, I can totally see why it would do that. And I expect that it will be a fairly dark game because werewolves basically being beasts. I wonder how that translates into the story though. Because while I am fine with dark, if it is a dark for the sake of being dark versus for the sake of the story, that is a concern. It should be dark as the story requires.

What I’m Excited About?

Speaking of the story though, I am excited for that. Vampires: The Masquerade – CHAPTERS has around 750,000 words. If Werewolf is even close to that, that is a ton of story. And just in the base box, it promises 30+ booklets of story, between 40 to 60 pages. What I saw from CHAPTERS, some were over that, so that is a ton of story for the game. And if they pull the story off well, it has elements that I love in a game.

It is going to have that story to the game with choose your own adventure. But at the same time, you get tactical combat. And you are going to be leveling up and building out your character, which I like as well. I like that you can pick those three different forms, wolf, chrinos, and human. It isn’t that you grab a human and get the other two forms. You can mix and match however you like to get your character which I think is awesome. It means less presets and more playing how you want to play.

Who Is It For?

Well, I think there are two things to consider before you buy it. Firstly, it is going to be a darker story. I haven’t experienced it, but that is what they are billing it as. Without knowing details, I am guessing that is the case mainly from a violence perspective. But it could mean a lot of things. So ask yourself, do you want to play a very dark campaign?

The other thing is that this is a campaign game. 30+ scenarios, and if a scenario takes 3 hours, I don’t know how long they will take, but even 2 hours, that is a lot of content to get through. So ask yourself do you want or need another campaign game. And if this is your first campaign game, what is drawing you in. I don’t think it looks like the most complex campaign game I have seen, but also not the easiest.

Why Back Now?

Firstly, Flyos Games is a small indie publisher. So supporting them to help them get a dream project off the ground is a valid reason. Now that has already happened. The game has funded and it’ll be happening. So another reason can be to help unlock stretch goals.

But, the main reason is that it’s unlikely to get a retail release. I know that more campaign games are getting some sort of retail release. But often those come from bigger companies will more connections. But they are hard for retailers to carry for multiple reasons. Mainly, though, it eats up a ton of shelf space so they can have less product out. And it costs a lot, so it tends to sit longer. So I wouldn’t expect to see too many copies of this in the wild.

Back or Brick – Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Retaliation

I look at this two ways. Firstly, I think that this is probably going to be your main way to get the game. Yes, it might show up in some retail locations but it won’t be there consistently. The other thing, though, is that Vampire: The Masquerade – CHAPTERS is being boxed and getting ready to ship now. While I didn’t pledge it, I am getting a copy through a retailer who pledged it. But I don’t know what I think of that game yet, other than watching some game play.

So part of me thinks this should be a Brick until I can get my hands on CHAPTERS. But right now, it is a Back for me. Why, because I’ve watched game play of CHAPTERS and it looks great. This is also the chance to get it now and werewolves are very underdone compared to vampires. Plus, I could do what I did with CHAPTERS, get it from a retailer who pledge it, but it is definitely cheaper to back it on the campaign than likely what I’ll pay later for it.

How about for you, is Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Retaliation a Back or a Brick?

Obviously we don't know everything but there are some fun ones.

The post 2022 Most Anticipated Board Games first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Now, this list might seem like it’s been done already, or at least to some extent. I’ve been talking about crowdfunding games the last two days. Games that will be shipped to me, and games that will be coming to a crowdfunding platform. Today I want to look at board games that won’t be doing either of those things.

The games that, as far as I know, are just going to be published or that I’ll have access to. So it might be a crowdfunding game but one I didn’t back. I kind of expect this to be a harder because there often isn’t a ton of information out there on games. And going through BGG, there are a lot of entries but a lot of them were crowdfunding games.

So You’ve Been Eaten

Fairly sure this came to Kickstarter, but I don’t remember 100%. So You’ve Been Eaten is a game where you are playing as a miner trying to get out of a monster that has eaten you. Or you play as the monster trying to eat the guy. It’s a game that can be played by 0, 1, or 2 players. 0 players means the game plays itself. Well, with someone taking the AI’s actions.

But the concept of the game is just fun. I feel like I like games with really weird themes, and it’s hard to get weirder than being eaten by a monster and trying to get out of it. The title if nothing else just makes me want to try the game.

Sagrada: Legacy

It’s two things that I love, Sagrada, a great dice drafting and dice placement game. And Legacy, meaning that the game progresses and grows as you go through it. I’m not sure what that is going to entail, but I’ve been excited for this one since I learned about it. I don’t know for sure this will come out in 2022, but whenever it does, I’ll be picking it up.

My hope is that you build up a whole cathedral of stained glass windows through the game. I am guessing this won’t have nearly as much story as a lot of legacy games, but it’s a game system that I already like with Sagrada. And it might be a more accessible legacy game, like My City.

Vagrants Song

This one is kind of out right now, so it might be a bit of a cheat, but it’s not out for a wide audience. But the Dice Tower, and that it was multiple times in the Top 10 of the year, I believe, Tom, Zee, and Mike all had it there, it makes me interested. This is a bag chit pulling game, battle game, a lot going on it. It’s cooperative and there is story as well, so like I said, a lot going on.

I don’t know that this is one that I’ll pick up. It feels like it’s unique, the art style is unique. This is kind of like So You’ve Been Eaten in that it just feels different from almost anything else out there. Yes, there are elements that have been done before, but the teme especially is really different feeling.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Chapters

Now, I know I’m cheating on this one. It most definitely is a Kickstarter game. It is even a game that I looked at on Kickstarter. But it wasn’t until I saw a playthrough of the prototype, and it was a partial production copy prototype, that I knew I wanted this game. It’s a big campaign game, I should have known before.

But it has story elements, and heavy story elements to it. I like it when my campaigns tell a great story. And it also has that divide that we’re seeing in games like Oathsworn as well where you have combat and a map, but also just story and choose your own adventure from a book. So I hope that this one gets some level of retail release when it eventually comes out.

Vampire the Masquerade Chapters by Flyos Games

Unmatched – Marvel

I haven’t gotten any Unmatched before. This is a game that is a fighting game between two people. I already own a game that I love like that with Super Fantasy Brawl. But now that we’re getting Marvel characters, I might need to pick up some Unmatched.

What I really like about this for Unmatched is that it isn’t the normal characters. I think one of the boxes maybe has Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Ghost Rider. Yes, they show up in other games, but there isn’t a box where it’s Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor. So they are starting with different characters which I really like.

Flicking Finches

I hope that this game is at GenCon, let’s be fair. I don’t think that I’m going to pick up this dexterity game where you are flicking finches in hopes of getting Darwin to draw them without trying it. I’ve done that before with some dexterity games, but I’ve a good idea of what they are. And now I have my favorites all set aside with Icecool and PitchCar.

So do I need more flicking games. Likely not, but if I could demo this one. And if this one is fun. Then maybe I’d want to get another flicking game that is on a bit of a smaller scale.

Flicking FInches by Mendae

Bullet [STAR]

It’s the shape, not the word that’s why I have brackets. But this one is a bit of a cheat. I already pre-ordered this game. It is a real time game that is basically a solo puzzle. You try and use cards and powers to stop bullets, I think. Basically over up discs so that they don’t fall down and get you.

The aesthetic of this is great, it has that anime art style that I know some might not like, but I do. And I ordered the wooden discs to replace the ones that come with the game. So my thing is going to be even more fancy. Plus the game plays in two minutes so that is cool, very fast game to get to the table.

Risk: Shadow Forces

This is one that I need reviews on. When it was announced I immediately became interested. Why, because it’s a legacy game. And I had a really good time with Risk Legacy. But Risk: Shadow Forces seems to be a legacy game on the same level as Risk Legacy. By that I mean very few things to open up.

I thought that Risk Legacy was fun because of the group I played with. But I don’t think it’s an experience that I’d go back to. If Risk: Shadow Forces is the same level, I don’t need to go after it. But it is a legacy game and I’d love to play all of them. I like the shorter campaign style nature of them. And they seem to be more accessible to some people. Still, I need a review.

Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

This is a bit of a cheat. This game is already out, but they are coming out with a revised core box. I think it makes it so you can play with more. But it’s also a chance to jump into the game. Do I need another living card game to buy stuff for, I do not. But just getting the core box, I could see myself doing that. It is a theme that I love and my wife loves even more, so maybe a game that is easier to play.

But those are the board games that I’ve spotted thus far coming in 2022, at least that aren’t on Kickstarter or Gamefound. Obviously, we don’t know everything that is going to come out at this point. There are going to be games that the designs get finished and they just show up out of no where. Or, like this year with Stardew Valley are announced and immediately able to be pre-ordered. Is there any game you are excited for already in 2022?
