What else is showing up and what do I want to play next?

The post Point of Order: Fireball Island first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
So I’ve been holding off a tiny bit on buying board games. I’ve actually even dropped or reduced a few Kickstarter pledges. Some of that is that there are games like Descent, Unfathomable, and Slay the Spire coming out that I want to try and buy. They all seem like my type of game, and I only have so much room and so much budget for board games each year. But I did get a game I’ve been looking at for a long time in Fireball Island, and a little bit more.

Marvel Champions Drax

Now, this is a bit of a standard first one and generally why I write these articles. Monthly Marvel Champions comes out with something new and in this case, they are continuing to build off of the Galaxy’s Most Wanted expansion to add in more of the Guardians of the Galaxy. We now are able to play as Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, and Drax. And Nebula is coming. More characters is always fun and always reminds me to pull the game out and play more.

Doodle Dungeon

The other game I picked up at my FLGS was Doodle Dungeon. This is a new game from Pegasus Spiele, and looks like a lot of fun. This game reminds me of Boss Monster and a Roll and Write smashed together. In Doodle Dungeon you are making a dungeon. But unlike Deadly Doodles where you an adventurer delving into the dungeon, here you want the dungeon to win. The hero must die, they shouldn’t kill your monsters and of course not steal your treasure.

Doodle Dungeon

Now, do I need another game like this when I already have Boss Monster? Oddly enough, I had pulled Boss Monster off the shelf to sell recently because, while I think the game is a lot of fun it is a bit clutchy. The rules aren’t as smooth as they should be, and the game takes a bit to get going. I am hoping that Doodle Dungeon will work better for me.

Kohaku

This is a game that I’ve been eyeing for a little bit, mainly since GloryHoundd played it.

But what is drawing me to the game? Firstly, I like the aesthetic of the game. The tiles look amazing and different than a lot of other games. It also seems like a simple game. You draft tiles and do set collection around points, basically, and that’s it. I think this is a game that my wife will like but also one that I could take to play with my parents, or a heavier gaming group as something different. I like games to seem to offer a variety for a lot of people.

Fireball Island

Finally, we have Fireball Island: The Curse of Vul-Kar. This is a kids game, basically. Or more so now a family game. There was an original Fireball Island from the 80’s that was fine from what I’ve heard. It just had an awesome marble chute and cool 3D board. This version keeps all of that but adds in more game to it. It isn’t a roll or spin and move anymore, instead you are play cards to move.

This is one that I got to see and kind of demo at GenCon in 2019 and while I don’t know it’s a game that I will play all the time, it is fun. The game play is very simple and should work to play with the toddler in a few years, but can be played with friends now. I haven’t bought it until now because it’s a $75 game.

However, at Target, I happened to spot it on the shelf with no price. So I took it to one of the scanners and it was listed at $30. SO I definitely had to buy this game I’ve been looking at. My guess to what happened, and I’ve seen this happen before with Magic: The Gathering cards is something got entered into the system wrong. Fireball Island should be retailing at $75, like I said, but the expansions, $30. So someone, somewhere, priced it as if it were an expansion when it was the base game. This will likely get fixed soon, but if you really want to try and get it cheap, right now might work.

Which Do You Want To Play?

For me, I think the one that I want to play most is Kohaku. That one is just pretty and it’s been on my radar, like I said, for a little bit. Though Doodle Dungeon does look really cool and I already know I love Marvel Champions. I should just play some more games coming up here soon. Marvel Champions for sure because I can play it solo.

The post Board Game News: Welcome To and Fantasy Flight Rumors? first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
I want to start talking about board game news more. I am doing the Let There Be Hype board game coverage. But those are games that I know more about. Now, I am not going to be a great source for all the news. I would recommend checking out the news that The Dice Tower does on their Board Game Breakfast. But let’s hop into the news that I want to talk about. But what is Fantasy Flight teasing?

Fantasy Flight

Fantasy Flight has been teasing something new. Normally I would think they’d tease this about GenCon time. But they are announcing some new things now just because GenCon has been pushed back to September.

Firstly, we have the Mad Titan coming to Marvel Champions. This is going to be a campaign expansion coming like the Rise of the Red Skull and Galaxy’s Most Wanted. This one is giving you Thanos and a bunch of his minions like Proxima Midnight, Black Dwarf, and more to face off against. Definitely interested to get this one and cool to have an announcement for.

But that’s not the only thing that Fantasy Flight is teasing at this point. They are also teasing some announcement coming next week. Now there is a lot of speculation what this might be. From what we can see, I think there are two likely ways that we can go. Firstly this might be the solo/story driven stuff they have been hinting at for Keyforge. In fact, that’s the most likely thing, I believe. But people are also speculating this might be a reword of Battlestar Galactica. There was a “leak” of an Arkham Files game using the BSG traitor set-up on BGG at one point in time. I won’t be holding my breath for that, but I can hope.

Welcome To

Now, this one, I am having trouble finding a ton on. I’ve seen artwork posted on Facebook but no links yet for it, but a new version of Welcome To. This time Welcome To … The Moon. I am not going to be surprised if there are more versions of this roll and write coming out. Welcome To… is a very successful game that has a ton of expansions. And Welcome To New Vegas is one that I own but I need to play still. It makes it more complex but keeps some of the basics of the game.

I am definitely interested in this one as the artwork gives you a nice look at a rocket ship that it looks like you are filling out. It has some of that retro look that you get from the other games as well. So I hope it succeeds because I want more roll and writes and more Welcome To.

That’s it for the news today. What do you think that Fantasy Flight is teasing?

Point of Order: More Pitchcar https://nerdologists.com/2021/05/point-of-order-more-pitchcar/ https://nerdologists.com/2021/05/point-of-order-more-pitchcar/#comments Fri, 21 May 2021 14:07:04 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=5692 From new Pitchcar to Dungeons and Dragons books, what has been added to my collection as I dive into a pretty big Point of Order.

The post Point of Order: More Pitchcar first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
A double article Friday today, mainly because I have a tiny bit of catching up to do on my Point of Order. Yes, I have more board games coming in and a lot of them were bought on sale. You can see some of the Pitchcar at the start of my Malts and Meeples stream from Wednesday. Middara is certainly not one of them as that was Kickstartered early 2020 or late 2019. Let’s get into what is coming or has been picked up.

Pitchcar Extensions 1, 6 & 7

Pitchcar

I was able to play Pitchcar for the first time on Tuesday, but even before that, I knew I wanted to get more for it. In particular, I want The Loop. Extension 7, which I believe was on Kickstarter, is just a loop you can add to the track. This wooden track, so not sure how they make it, but it’s a new obstacle. Can you flick a disc with enough force to go up and around a loop? Or at least flick it hard enough so it will drop onto the next section of track? Then the other extensions add more pieces to create an even bigger track.

I’m not sure if it is still going on but Eagle-Gryphon had Pitchcar on sale.

Marvel Champions: Star-Lord and Gamora

Star-Lord

The last Marvel Champions expansion was The Galaxy’s Most Wanted. That was a campaign one that came with Rocket and Groot. So we knew when that was announced we would get more Guardians of the Galaxy characters. And yes, we did, so now you can take two characters this month and try and tackle the Galaxy’s Most Wanted campaign, or go four players and have a full team. I need to get them and a lot of other characters played, which I say every time. I should just set it up and play some evening soon.

Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything

Now, what is this? This isn’t a board game, instead it is a book for Dungeons and Dragons. I planned on getting this way sooner, but I was holding out hope to get the special cover. Unfortunately that was not in the cards. So, I broke down and I bought the regular one. This comes with all sorts of things, new spells, , some DM tools, but mainly I got it for the new character options. They add in a lot of new subclasses that the players can delve into. This just gives the players even more toys and more crazy things they can do.

Aeon’s End Expansions

You know the drill, I now have everything for Aeon’s End. Well, when I say everything, I mean, all the big boxes and all the small box expansions. I don’t need all the promo cards, that would just be silly to track down. But the last two expansion, small box, were consistently sold out, but then I looked on Miniature Market and they had both. So I grabbed them with another game, which I’ll talk about next. More Aeon’s End isn’t a bad thing, and it is a game I need to play more of as well.

A Gentle Rain

A Gentle Rain

Now, I don’t know if this is an activity or a game? A Gentle Rain has you flipping tiles and matching symbols on the sides of the tiles. Your goal is to place the tiles to get completed blocks of four tiles. When you do, you place a token. The goal of the game is to see how many tokens you can place. A Gentle Rain is a true solo gaming experience, but since it is so simple, you could play it cooperatively. I just like the sound of this game as another, like Onirim, really fast solo game.

Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft

Another Dungeons and Dragons book has made it into my orders. This one I do get the fancy art cover for, because I pre-ordered it. I will say, with the fancy art covers for these books, order them ahead of time through your FLGS if you can, there is no guarantee how many Wizards of the Coast will make. This book will have some for the players, but it’ll mainly be for a Dungeon Master who wants to run a game in Ravenloft. Do I want to run one there, sure, but like the Eberron book, I want it for the information to add to my campaign.

The Oracles Betrayal

Deep Madness: The Oracle’s Betrayal

This might be about the end to what I get for Deep Madness, another game I need to get to the table. But I will own most of it and I can find the rest on eBay later if need be. The Oracle’s Betrayal just basically adds three more scenarios that you can play through. The theme of the game is cool, because while it is Lovecraftian in terms of the monsters, I don’t feel like monsters on a deep sea base is something that is done enough. Every time I think of the game I really want to watch The Abyss and The Sphere.

Danger Park

Now, this one is a bit sad. Story Machine Games, the publisher of Danger Park had to fold because of the Covid-19 pandemic. So they put all their stock on sale, including Danger Park. I picked up that game because it looks fun and I want a theme park game. Who doesn’t want to build a theme park that might be a little bit dangerous? Sure, there are risks but if something happens, maybe that’ll help you win the game. Who knows, this is a humorous game about building a theme park that unfortunately now will be harder to get. I checked their website, all their stock is sold out at this point.

So, finally, which one is the most interesting to you? Is there a game that you can to try out of this bunch, or maybe you want to get one of the Dungeons and Dragons books?

The post Point of Order: Pitch Car and More! first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Yes, I know what you are all thinking, more board games have been bought, but most of the things I got were expansions (that’s more of an excuse than a reason). Part of why more games have been bought is that my trade at my FLGS (friendly local game store) went through, so I had store credit. Some of it is that Miniature Market has an up to 80% off sale going on, and some of it is that a new expansion came out a week ago for Marvel Champions. Let’s see what I got.

From the Miniature Market Sale

Aeon’s End Expansions

We’re starting with something that wasn’t even on sale. This is just more of the small box expansions for Aeon’s End. I love this game, and I think it’s going to be one that I just start playing through all the content I have here coming up soon. The cooperative card play and deck building is fun. All the different mages are really good. And the Nemesis can play so differently.

Aeons End Buried Secrets

But I got a lot of different expansions for it:

  • The Void
  • The Depths
  • Shattered Dreams
  • Buried Secret
  • Into the Wild
Downforce
Downforce

I’ve been enjoying racing games and the concept of racing games recently. Downforce has actually been on my radar for a long time, because it’s a different type of racing game. I have Formula D which is a big racing game with a lot of dice rolling. I have Camel Up which is a light racing game, and Downforce is more like that. In Downforce you bid on cars that are your car, but you also bid on other cards during the race. What is interesting about the race is that you spend your cards to move all of the cars, not just your own. So I play a card that moves green and blue forward five, red forward three, and pink, purple, and brown forward two (all colors are made up). It’ll tell me what order to move them forward in.

And you bid multiple times during the race. The better you do early, the more points you get at the end. But with the cards in your hand, you know some of what is going to happen. So you can manipulate it potentially to your advantage. Seems like a fun, light, different type of racing game.

Not Alone: Sanctuary Expansion
Not Alone Sanctuary

This is a a one versus all game that actually works well with a large number of players. The person who is the one plays as the planet and monsters on it that the all have crashed on. They are trying to survive long enough to get off of the planet. I am not totally sure what the Sanctuary Expansion adds. More locations is the most likely thing. This game is just fun, and I love the cooperative planning that can happen. It doesn’t always happen, but the all can talk about where they want to go. They must talk in ear shot of the one, but as much discussion as they want is allowed. Really excited to try some of the new expansion stuff for variety in the game.

From My FLGS (All Systems Go)

Marvel Champions: Galaxies Most Wanted

I love Marvel Champions. The game is just a ton of fun and offers so much content already. This is the second campaign box that they have put out. The first, Rise of Red Skull is a pretty simple and straightforward campaign, but the Guardians of the Galaxy focused one, with Groot and Rocket is supposed to be more complex. I am really excited to see everything that is in it. And I am really excited for the Guardians of the Galaxy to be coming to Marvel Champions.

Galaxys Most Wanted
Pitch Car

Finally, we have Pitch Car. This game has been on my radar for ages, and I was glad I was able to find it used. Pitch Car is not a cheap game, especially with expansions, because it’s all particle board and nice quality. Pitch Car is another racing game but really different from Formula D, Downforce, or Camel Up. In Pitch Car, you flick your car around the track. Everyone takes a turn flicking, trying not to fly off of the track and do amazing shots and jumps, banking off the walls. And what I picked up wasn’t just base Pitch Car.

The person had traded in three expansions as well. So I also got the long straights, the More Speed More Fun expansion, and the Stunt Race expansion. This is enough to build a pretty massive track. This will definitely be one of the first games that I get out for in person gaming. A lot of games work via Zoom, but dexterity games not so much. Pitch Car and Ice Cool will be two that are going to be a lot of fun when playing in person again.

Which Would You Want to Play?

Let me know in the comments below which you’d be most interested in playing. For me, I think that it has to be Pitch Car right now. The prospect of gaming in person is just so exciting after it being so limited for over a year. And Pitch Car, the concept and the tracks just seems like a ton of fun. It might even be a game that I take to a board game store and let people know when it is going to be there to come try and play.
