Things are going awry on the space ship and Chronofiends!! are causing trouble. Not only that, but the captain is causing some troubles as well with unsanctioned experiments. So we need to solve that problem before it gets out of hand. That is just one of the Chronofiends!! Can we survive this game by Spacemole Games designed by Matt Hewes?

Follow the Chronofiends!! Campaign.

Chronofiends!! Highlights

My plan is not to go into game play in depth here. This is not like my normal reviews where I’m going to give my grade an opinion at the end. The company sent me a prototype of the game to cover. So it is unfair for me to give a review on it. Instead, I want to highlight elements of Chronofiends!! that will help you make your decision on knowing if this is the right game for you to back.

Ease of System

This one is a mixed bag. Mainly, it is a mixed bag because it is not the fastest set-up in the world. It is not like the system or scenarios are that complex, but there are a number of pieces to get out of the box. But when you get to the game play itself the system is slick and easy to play.

In particular, I like the turn order. This is not unique to Chronofiends!! where the player highest on the turn order goes next, but it is easy to keep track of. And the turn itself is easy to keep track of, you move and then you complete some task in a room. The trickiest bit of the system is when the chronofiends go and you need to pay attention to which way they move.

Leveling/Powering Up

The leveling up skills system is really fun as well. The more time you spend doing something the more knowledgeable you become at it. That is easy to keep track of as you play as well. And then to have something that you are good at improve over and over so as the loops get shorter and shorter you can still have a chance, it’s a smart system.

It is a system that I didn’t utilize to the best of my ability in my streamed playthrough. But I want to talk about that more in the next section.

Keeping on this, I mentioned how the system is smart. It is smart for two reasons. Firstly, the shorter time period keeps the pressure on you. But you also feel more powerful as you go. So it is this race condition as you play, can your power out pace the reduction in time that is happening?

Strategy/Looping

So now let’s dive into this looping and strategy that it forces (and that I didn’t use that well). What do I mean by that? In Chronofiends!!, kind of like in TIME Stories, you loop back. And as a player and character you keep the knowledge that you have of the space ship. So it is easier to go through because you know what you are coming up against.

There is also, then, gaining experience. So not only do you know that you are coming up against, you also know how to deal with it better. But there are elements that are different. While the work that you’ve done does reset, the chronofiends do not. Each time you play or each time you loop that is going to make the game different.

Now, in my play I think I took a less than ideal strategy. I think the first loop or two can be avoiding, finding, and leveling up. I went after the big objective the second time. It does help with leveling up, but not so much avoiding and finding. When you play, that is going to help you out, I think. But it means that there is strategy and planning you need to do as a player.

The Be Aware

I only want to call out one thing in the be aware section. So no sub headers for it. But this is not a small game. I think the box size, and this is not the final box size, kind of hides how large this game can be. I definitely had to adjust my normal streaming set-up because of the size. This is not a negative or positive for the game. But know what you play on. This is not going to be a coffee table game, nor does it need to be that.

Final Thoughts

So, I won’t give a grade or anything like that. I think that Chronofiends!! has a lot of positives to it and gives you an interesting time travel game. And I like that compared to TIME Stories where a loop can be ruined by bad luck of a die roll, you are in control here. Sure the chronofiends might get you, but there is strategy around where you go and how they go with that.

And as I mentioned, depending on your strategy that is going to affect how you want to play solo. I think I played more as I laid out in my section on strategy, I might have won. That said, it is easy to play two handed solo. There is not a ton to keep track of per character, so that is going to make it dealers choice for that. And information is not hidden, so no advantage playing two handed that way.

What do you think of Chronofiends!!? Is it a game that you are going to be checking out when it comes to crowdfunding? Again, follow the campaign here.

The adventure continues, we know what we want to find, how will our search go this time? It’s time for more of The 7th Citadel from Serious Poulp Games as i play more of the Drums of Desolation. Last week we went on a mission to find one person and this week, it’s another, but done in a slightly different way. Join me to see how it works. And catch up on The 7th Citadel here.

The 7th Citadel – Character Story

One element of the game that I haven’t come across, thus far, is the character story elements. Each of them has their own quest, and maybe that ties more into which of the threats you are playing, but none of them are showing up, thus far, in the one that I’m playing.

Is this an issue for The 7th Citadel, I can’t really decide. I’m loving what I’m playing in the game thus far. The game play is very interesting and it has been offering a fun story and quickly play as I go. But I pull out those personal quests each time and am waiting for one of them to trigger, when I see them. However, when I play, I am focused on surviving that it is possible that I’m missing them, especially Arthen’s where it is symbol. I like to think that I’d recognize the words that would trigger Casek’s, but I don’t feel confident.

I expect it is an element of the game that will show up. But when and how much I really don’t know. And is this something that I need to play through this one threat to find all the generic items. Or is it tied to a specific threat, this one or another, so it might not show up? If it is the latter, I wish that they had warned or stated more clearly. And it is possible that I missed it, but I don’t feel like I did. Which is why I suspect I’ve missed something on the board or maybe it is later in the game.

Upcoming Streams

On Monday I play small solo game plays. The schedule is, right now, going to look like gaming every other Monday. A chance to see people in person came up for Monday and as much as I like streaming, it’s good to socialize as well. And I might do more deck construction with Star Wars Unlimited on Mondays as well or pack openings.

On Wednesdays, I play solo campaign games. I plan on playing a campaign game coming up. Right now I’m torn between two games. Well, more than that if you watched through the end of the video. And that is more of The 7th Citadel. I plan to keep playing through The Drums of Desolation for a while so join me for that.

How will this new adventure start out on Malts and Meeples?

Time to play more of The 7th Citadel from Serious Pulp Games. Join me for a slightly abbreviated play of the first scenario of Drums of Desolation. Why abbreviated, well, because my computer decided to crash again. I’m trying to work on that so it’s not an issue. But I got a good forty minutes or so of The 7th Citadel in and explored some of the world. Join me to see what I saw and where the story will continue from.

The 7th Citadel – Drums of Desolation

It’s time to start exploring what the regular game looks like. And I’m not sure if the image for the video will show that for you, as it’s not showing the right thing for me. Yay crashed stream messing around with what I can do. But the video is there.

But, with enough of my bemoaning that fact, it is interesting to dive into the story here versus what the New Beginnings was. New Beginnings is obviously a pretty tightly focused and contained story. It helps you get an idea of how that mechanisms in the game work, but does this continue that element of the game?

I think that it does in some ways, but not so much in other ways. It kind of sets up a gate around what you’re doing in the game. As I explore my “ground shiver” level locks me away from some sections of the board. Basically, the game warning me that in some areas I might run into bigger and scarier monsters than I can handle.

On the flip side, it also is a much more open game than the New Beginnings section of the game. There I am very limited in where I can explore. And they want you to do everything and then continue forward. Here, it is more open. Do I go south and east or south and west, most of that is going to be open, it doesn’t really matter.

Do you like how it opens up after the New Beginnings? It seems more like The 7th Continent that way, though not fully. So let me know your thoughts.

The 7th Citadel is now hitting the table as my new campaign game. Join me over on Malts and Meeples to see what this game is all about. Which characters will I pick and how will the adventure unfold. Watch as I play through part of the starting scenario and see what adventures might continue going forward. And catch up with my unboxing of the game here. Is The 7th Citadel a game that you’re interested in?

The 7th Citadel – The Basics

So what do you need to know about the game and how it works? I could dive into a complex, if something happens then another thing happens and go down that rabbit hole of events. But for the most part, The 7th Citadel follows some basic interactions.

Actions

Firstly, if you interact with anything it’s almost always the same interaction. There is a minimum number of cards to draw, and you can draw more. But if you do, you are burning through your stamina faster. You need to, however, flip enough to try and get some successes. That means you flip and then combine the cards to get as many stars as you can. It’s a system that I like, good for push your luck, in my opinion.

Health

To go along with that stamina that you get from the cards, it also impacts your health. In The 7th Citadel when you run out of cards, or start to get low, you can spend health to get some cards back. It’s two cards per hit point that you spend. Or you might play on easier or harder modes which are 3 cards for every one or two life respectively. So you theoretically can get almost all your cards back twice. But there is damage that affects your health as well.

Random Events

Beyond that, the game is just about interacting with the different points. So probably the final thing to know of the basics is that you add events to the spots around you in the game. As you want to move from one card to another you add events. These are the random events that make your story different from other peoples who play The 7th Citadel. There are other choices as well, but these are some of the biggest that make a difference.

That is generally the basics of the game. There is more that goes on, but almost everything interacts with the core system of flipping cards and getting stars. I like how simple that system is as it’s one that is going to be easy to teach as I eventually want to play through this game two player or more. Because with three threat, there is a lot of story and choices to be made that I won’t see in a single playthrough.

The next game is the one that I just unboxed, 7th Citadel. So I plan to start playing it next week or at least do character building and then dive into the game.

Point Salad App https://nerdologists.com/2024/03/point-salad-app/ https://nerdologists.com/2024/03/point-salad-app/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 11:17:28 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=8822 Craft a salad in Point Salad. Is the app for this drafting card game a successful representation of what you play on the table top?

The post Point Salad App first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Let’s talk about games that you can play on an app. Not all of them are amazing, but some of them work quite well. The newest one that I picked up was the Point Salad app. Point Salad is a pretty simple game, so it should work well on an app, at least that is what I assumed. When I got around to playing it, was the Point Salad app good or was it a miss, because there have been some big misses.

How To Play Point Salad

I’m not going to go through all of it. Basically it’s an open drafting game. You either take two vegetables or one scoring card. If you take vegetables that is going to cause the scoring cards to change. If you want more thoughts on it and my full review, albeit from a while ago, you can find that here. The player with the most points from their vegetables based off of their scoring cards wins the game.

Simplicity of the Game

Point Salad is not a complex game. For that reason, I think that it helps how the app can work and how quickly you can pick it up and play. I did have the advantage of already knowing the game, but it is an easy game to sit down and learn. Though, the app doesn’t do Point Salad any favors in learning the game.

But the basic mechanisms of the game work really well. It’s a sit down and get playing game that the system can play against you. It doesn’t require too much complex development to where the AI feels like it’s good because it knows more. That means that the AI is not too easy for the game, but also that it feels like playing real people. Sometimes other people just get luckier on their draws.

Learning Point Salad

This is an area, though, where the app is lacking. Most games that I download offer one of two things. Either they integrate the rulebook into the app, or they give you a walk through. Now, as someone who knows most of these games, the integrated rulebook is fine. But I admit it isn’t as nice as a walk through or tutorial level to learn how to play.

Point Salad gives you a link to a PDF download. So, you leave the app. That to me is just weird. What is so hard about taking your rules, again pretty simple rules, and just creating a page in the app that looks like your PDF? I don’t want to leave the app. I close my apps that are open a lot, so what if after I read the PDF, I close and your app? Not a big deal, but not nice. And it doesn’t integrate into being a ruleset that I could look up during the game.

Final Thoughts

I like the app and I think that Point Salad works well as an app. However, I know the game so that gives me an unfair advantage when learning the game in the app. Mainly, Point Salad is such a simple game that I don’t really have to learn it. I already know it, and I don’t even need a refresher on it.

For people getting into the game, I do think that it’s a fairly big negative to not have the rules integrated into the app. So I can’t give it as high marks. And with the AI, I said that it feels like a person. I stand by that, the intelligence level and skill level feel real. The downside, again, is that they feel like someone who knows the game. That means if it’s your first time or first handful of times, it might thump you. Especially if the app is your introduction to drafting games.

Overall, though, I think as people learn it, it is a good game. I haven’t played around with the online mode. I rarely do because it takes a fast game and makes it slower. And I didn’t mention this, but on the app it is very fast, another good feature. I might play online or pass and play eventually, but right now solo against the AI works well.

Join the town and watch it grow in another game of Mythwind. This relaxing game from Open Owl Studios is building up as the town is starting to see a lot of new buildings and stories unfold. What will I come across and decisions will I make throughout summer and fall of year two. Join me as I play Mythwind over on Malts and Meeples YouTube.

Streaming After Mythwind

I’ve covered Mythwind a lot. But I’m getting close to when I’ll wrap up streaming it. I like to show a game like this off, but there are so many campaign games or adventure games that I can play. Which is the one that I should play next? Here are a few that I’m considering.

Tales form the Red Dragon Inn

This one actually got talked about on the stream. Tales from the Red Dragon Inn is supposed to be a fun and lighter dungeon crawling game. You play as characters from the Red Dragon Inn board game. Whereas that game is about what you do after an adventure, this one is the adventures, or at least them being retold. I feel like I shouldn’t trust the narration in the game for what actually happens, but we’ll see. Plus the game uses a map book which makes set-up and teardown a whole lot easier.

Sleeping Gods: Distant Skies

I already did a play of Sleeping Gods on the channel, so continuing with the sequel to talk about what is new and different, I like the sound of that. Plus, I’ve watched some of the game play over on the Meet Me At the Table Channel. A lot of what it changes in the game are things that I got wrong in the first one. Or at least one of the main items is. I want a chance to experience that from the game, plus I want to see what adventures it has to offer that I can find.

Wild Assent

Wild Assent got added into the collection recently. This one is going to be a monster hunting type of game. If I had my Primal in, it’d take this place. But I do want to play Wild Assent and see what the game is all about. Th is is about taking hunters out and defeating monsters/creatures in a boss battling sort of experience. I haven’t done too many boss battlers so that element is very intriguing to me. And I think less heavy campaign elements could be good for me as well.

Hoplomachus Victorum

This one is going to be less of a story driven campaign and more just a campaign. The story is going to come from the locations that I choose than narrative prose. But that sounds intriguing. And like Distant Skies, it’s going to be a shorter campaign. There are a set number of combats and events to play. So it hits my list of potential ones for that.

Others

Let me know if there are other games you’d be interested in seeing me play. I have mentioned Nova Aetas Renaissance recently. That one I left off the list, for right now, because I think there is more to get ready. And the sessions might take longer to play, so it’s does it fit into my evening time slot.

Aeon’s End Legacy of Gravehold is another that I’d love to play. Like Distant Skies, it is a game that I’ve already played on the channel. Well, it is kind of. I went through Aeon’s End Legacy and I love that game. So my hesitation comes from doubling up on that one. I expect that that there will be new elements, so the game might be different enough.

Let me know which one sounds the best to you? Or, checkout my games over on Board Game Geek and let me know which one you want to see played?

Upcoming Streams

On Monday I stream at 9 PM Central. That is sometimes a bit hit or miss, but that’s the goal. And I do small solo game plays. The schedule is, right now, going to look like gaming every other Monday. A chance to see people in person came up for Monday and as much as I like streaming, it’s good to socialize as well.

On Wednesdays, well, I said that I plan to play at least a few more games of Mythwind. This is going to continue how I play my solo campaign games on the channel. The reason for that is with how many campaign games I can play solo, I want to try more. That is at 8 PM Central time for the campaign games.

Mythwind Thoughts

I know one of the bigger review channels, the Dice Tower, just reviewed Mythwind. I haven’t gone through their whole review for it, but the reviews were mixed. And I think all three people who reviewed it like it less than I do. And I believe like it less than other people do who I’ve seen play it. That said, I’m not going to say that the Dice Tower crew were wrong. They always have reasons for their opinions on reviews.

So I want to throw some of my own thoughts onto it. I tend to be a positive reviewer. I like more games than I don’t, and that’s a good thing. If you review board games and find that you like fewer than you enjoy, board games might not be the right space. But a game like Mythwind is always going to be a tough sell. Mainly because it is supposed to be a cozy, relaxing, kind of a goal but not really a win condition game. And I don’t blame anyone for not wanting that in a game.

Mythwind is What It Says

What I’ll call out, and this is something I’ve seen with other games as well, is when someone dislikes a game for doing what it says it is going to do. Mythwind is a cozy game. That might not be what you want in a game, but that doesn’t make Mythwind a bad game. Or I see this all the time with Tainted Grail. The amount of complaining about Tainted Grail when all the information as to what type of game it was going to be was right there was astounding to me.

A game might not work for you. And that is a fine thing. No game should work for everyone. If a game does, that means that it probably works okay for everyone. No matter what it is, you can’t please everyone. So I’m glad to see when a game comes out that is great for some people and okay or not so great for others. It’s better to have a subset who love the game and will come back to it, than everyone saying it’s a 6.5 or 7 out of 10.

Mythwind is Relaxing

At no point in time do I feel rushed when I play the game. Yes, this is just me restating that Mythwind is what it says it is. But it’s worth talking about. I don’t feel rushed. I don’t feel like I need to make a perfect decision, ever. If it takes two turns to get what I want, well, that’s okay. In fact, I like that feeling because it adds to the game in multiple ways.

I’ve talked about it being relaxing, that’s what this section is about. But that relaxed nature adds to the replayability of the game. My culture wasn’t high enough at times to unlock particular events. Will those events massively change the game, probably not, but they might tweak it. And what it’s like with more players, how much faster it can move, I’m curious about that. And because it is such a puzzle for each character, I can play it again with a new character and it won’t feel too much like I’m rehashing story.

It Might Not Be For You

And all of that said, I want to reiterate, Mythwind very well might not be for you. The game is something unique and specific in what it does. No win condition, no massive pressure moments, that is a tough sell. At the same time, I played and narrated my game for just over an hour yesterday to get through two seasons. This is a relaxing game where I can see, when not streaming, that a season will take me 20-25 minutes. And with 5-10 minutes of set-up and teardown combined, it’s a relaxing puzzle to play.

In fact, I think if you like small solo games, Mythwind is a good fit. The ease to the table stands out for the game. But it’s not just that, it’s the core loop for players. You get to really dive into one or two things that your character does well. And I like that a lot for the game. If that’s what you want, you’ll enjoy Mythwind. If you want a clear, well defined, end point, it’s going to feel lacking.

On Wednesdays, well, I said that I plan to play at least a few more games of Rogue Angels. This is going to continue how I play my solo campaign games on the channel. The reason for that is with how many campaign games I can play solo, I want to try more. That is at 8 PM Central time for the campaign games.

Rogue Angels – Mission 1 https://nerdologists.com/2024/01/rogue-angels-mission-1/ https://nerdologists.com/2024/01/rogue-angels-mission-1/#comments Thu, 04 Jan 2024 12:42:05 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=8630 It's time to start our first campaign of 2024. Join me as I play Rogue Angels from Sun Tzu Games and see where the adventure leads.

It’s a dark time as war has overtaken a peace that has lasted a long time. You find your characters on a tucked away and shady part of the war in a land of pirates and trouble. You are mercenaries, hired to do a job, but what that job is and what the missions will entail, you’re going to have to find out. That’s the beginning or Rogue Angels: Legend of the Burning Suns from SunTzu Games is about. What adventure you find, that is up to you.

Join me as I play Rogue Angels. I plan on playing it around 8 PM Central time every week, at least 10 weeks, over on Malts and Meeples YouTube. What story will I find, how will the characters I play progress in this prototype of Rogue Angels. Thanks to Emil Larson for sending it my way and I’m excited to show it off.

Rogue Angels

Well, I have ten weeks to talk about this, which means that I’m going to be hitting on different aspects each week. And I love Rogue Angels. I’ve played it on Table Top Simulator a few times. And now I get to play it in real life. Even though this is only a prototype, it is a game that will be in my Top 100 next year. My rule is that I need to play a game in person, or with a physical copy, and I have now.

So let’s preview some of what is going to be coming up that I’ll talk about over the next handful of weeks.

  • Character Stories
  • Campaign Story
  • Card Play System
  • Enemy AI System
  • Maps and Set-up System
  • And More

Today I want to start by talking about the campaign story. I know, it likely would make more sense to do characters first, because that is the one I had at the top. But I want to explore that more with you as I play, the campaign story, I’ve seen more of.

Campaign Story

I think how Emil handles the story is an interesting way. I know the first time that I played with him and talked with him, one of the big things was how the story was meant to be interspersed like cut scenes. So it isn’t a big block of text and then some third person dialog at you. It’s just dialog with a little bit of description thrown in so you know the setting. But the setting and all of that, that is mainly on the board.

Compared this to other games, let’s go with Gloomhaven and Frosthaven, when you go on a mission, get into a scenario there, it’s a lot of text up front. Frosthaven does a better job of mixing in more story throughout, but most of the heavy lifting is information up front. Rogue Angels it’s just dialog. You see what you need to see because of the scenario.

What does this do for the game? Well, I think that it helps keep you immersed in the game and setting. Both do in their own way, but Rogue Angels is more about that action, that interaction. And you see that with a lot of faction specific stuff. When you interact with talking to people and making decisions off of groups that it going to determine things like your favor more so.

Is one better than the other, I’m not sure. I like how both do it, but I think that it’s worth talking about how Rogue Angels is different. And it plays into the type of game that it is or I expect it to be. I already have come across character choices and more personal choices on who you like, than in Gloomhaven. So it’s probably more like Role Player Adventures that way.

Upcoming Streams

It’ll be tomorrow where I breakdown what is going to be happening on Mondays. To checkout the article that comes out there. But I do plan to keep streaming at 9 PM Central time. And most of it is going to be playing solo games that are one offs, or opening cards like it has been.

On Wednesdays, well, I said that I plan to play at least 10 games of Rogue Angels. This is going to continue how I play my solo campaign games on the channel. We’ll see if I am able to get four different campaigns played at least 10 games this year. It’s tricky, but I think that I can do it. That is at 8 PM Central time for the campaign games. The next part of Rogue Angels can be found coming up here.

Top 3 Board Games that Need a New Edition https://nerdologists.com/2023/10/top-3-board-games-that-need-a-new-edition/ https://nerdologists.com/2023/10/top-3-board-games-that-need-a-new-edition/#respond Fri, 27 Oct 2023 16:47:08 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=8464 What are some board games out there that need a second or a better edition? I came up with three that I've played that could be better in the base box.

The post Top 3 Board Games that Need a New Edition first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
So this is an interesting topic for me because I tend not to buy new editions when they come out. But sometimes board games really need a new edition for some reason or another. The most common one I can think of, or at least one of them, is that an expansion for the game makes it that much better. Another being that the rules were bad, and sometimes a game is just ugly. So what boardgames would I love to see a new edition of?

Top 3 Board Games That Need a New Edition

Just to set-up how I’m picking the list. I am picking games that I have played. I know that there are some games that are mainly unplayable as the rules are written. If I haven’t played it, I can’t judge that for sure. I know some people think Tainted Grail is the worst thing ever for the grind that was explicitly said to be part of the game (don’t get me started) but I like that game a lot. So I don’t think it needs a second edition of the core game.

3. Lost Ruins of Arnak

This one is pretty easy as to why I think it should have another edition and it’s not because there is a major flaw with the core box of the game. In fact, I enjoyed it pretty well playing what comes in the core box. But the first expansion gives you leaders with powers. That should be in the core box. It took the game from a 7 or so up to a 9 or 10 for me because it meant everyone was doing things a bit more differently.

Now, I don’t think this will happen anytime soon. Lost Ruins of Arnak is a new game that they are still coming out with expansions for. But, in my opinion, the leaders should be in that main box. Even if you want to start with playing vanilla Lost Ruins of Arnak, have it in the box for when you’re ready for the next step.

2. SeaFall

This one falls into having issues in a number of ways. The rules were not good, the game itself was too long, and sometimes, you just got the story out of order. But I like the idea of a pirate legacy game, even though this barely seemed like pirates. So SeaFall is one that could use a complete overhaul, well, kind of.

I do think that the bones are there for a good game. There are elements like getting crew, exploring, fighting, even the dice mechanics once you figured them out in the rules weren’t too bad, but it needs to be tightened up. Maybe reduce how much you can possibly do in a game. Introduce rules more slowly, something like that. They changed rules, but let’s start out with just exploring and then after a couple of games add in fighting.

The two big things are you need to shorten the length of the game. There is no reason, besides to allow you to find more, to extend the games by a point each time. The game is already long at the start, there needed to be a way to get more points at the start from the legacy decisions that you made. And it’d have been a great balancing mechanism.

The other thing is that story. Like I said, you can find it out of order. The game is played over a number of sessions, give me a booklet or a section of the booklet to find the stories. That keeps the story from coming out awkwardly and leave the players with more questions. I get the desire for open world, but that isn’t needed in this case.

1. Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game

This is a Marvel game that I will not get. Helps that a friend has or had a ton of it so I got to play it a number of times. But for me this is a game that needs to be rebooted because, in my opinion, the game really doesn’t work that well. You fight a boss, deal with henchmen, and generally feel like you’re not doing much of anything.

Marvel Champions is more of what I wanted, but I think there is room for improvement on Legendary and that both could be in a collection. Mainly, I don’t feel like a super hero when I played Legendary. That’s kind of the idea is you are a super hero(es) beating up bad guys. But it takes forever to get to the main bad guy, make the easier and throughout the game than a last second dash at the end.

And with the deck building, I feel like I’m collecting random heroes. Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Captain America all in the deck, I’ll probably have some of all of them. So everyone is playing basically the same team-up. I’d prefer a more generic set of cards, each hero can add some to it, but you play as a hero with a base set of that hero’s cards. Let me build up my hero and be a hero in battle. I don’t need to be everything. Let me grab a cool move, some intel, whatever it might be. But it is better than what they have now.

Final Thoughts

I could have come up with more. I actually almost push Smash Up on the list with just, make it into Marvel Snap. They are close, but Marvel Snap is so much better. And that one would really be changing the game, into a new game, versus being a second edition. I guess that Legendary might fall into that area as well.

But board games sometimes need that new edition. And, I would, if I ever had the time, go through SeaFall again and try and turn it into a better game. Try and make it something that doesn’t take four hours to play and a lot of that time not being interesting, in higher player count games. But that is for future me when I have future time, though, I’ll probably always be busy.

Is there a game you want to see a second, better, edition of?

Mass Transit by Calliope Games – Game Play https://nerdologists.com/2023/08/mass-transit-by-calliope-games-game-play/ https://nerdologists.com/2023/08/mass-transit-by-calliope-games-game-play/#comments Tue, 15 Aug 2023 11:37:49 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=8269 Join me on Malts and Meeples YouTube as I play Mass Transit from Calliope Games. How will this cooperative game turn out for me?

The post Mass Transit by Calliope Games – Game Play first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
A new to me game from Calliope Games hit the table last night on Malts and Meeples. Mass Transit is a one to six player cooperative game. And Mass Transit, with that solo game play is the one hitting the table last night as I got back to my more normal Malts and Meeples streaming schedule. I knocked out a few plays of the game which you can watch.

The Game – Mass Transit

Let’s talk a bit about Mass Transit because I’m not quite ready to do a full review on it yet. But there are elements that stand out to me, and I was wondering, after we won handily at Gen Con, if this is a game that would hold up. I say handily, we were down to the last card or two. But there was a comfort level that we were set-up well to always keep our travelers moving.

Last night, it is clear, was not the same thing happening. Certain elements of Mass Transit need to workout for you to win, and some of that is how you play the game. The other part is an element of luck. Now, the luck in the game is able to be mitigated. I choose which cards to play or not play on a turn. Yes, some card must join a route or be used to move a passenger on a turn. But how many I play is up to me.

Winning Cooperative Games

And, personally, I like it when a game doesn’t offer me too many wins. A cooperative game, in my opinion, is meant to be hard. Do I want to win? Yes, I want to win. But if I fail to win, I want it to feel like I am close. And I prefer to feel like I am close and lose than to feel like I win fairly easily every time. Or even that I win too often.

If I win too often, I question if it is luck or not. Here, because I lose closely, I feel like I can play better. Yes, there is luck in Mass Transit. And that luck is capable to changing how a game goes. But as I discuss above, I think there is strategy to mitigate that. And I need to do a better job of that versus an issue with the game.

Upcoming Streams

So let us talk about what is coming up next. On Wednesday, The Isofarian Guard is back to the table. Well, it never left the table, but I will stream it again. And that is at 8 PM Central Time. Join me then if you can to see how that adventure goes now that I am out of the prologue.

And on next Monday, I plan on streaming another game. I think I own a few new games from Gen Con that I can play solo. Not all of the games I got work for solo, but some of them do. So my plan is to continue to explore those games. And that is at 9 PM Central Time on Malts and Meeples.

But the best way, if you want to know when I go live or a new video goes up (it’s basically always live), please consider subscribing. You can do that here. And click that notification bell on the channel and you’ll always know when I go live.
