We're in the penultimate part of my Top 50 Anime of all time. Which is your favorite?

The post Top 50 Anime – 20 through 11 first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
I missed last week, but I’m back to it now, and it’s a weird combination of so many anime on this list. There is one that was my favorite for a long time that is going to start off the list. I even cosplayed as a character from it. I still love the anime, but it’s one where I wonder, will I ever watch it again. Because it’s really good, but pretty heavy. And then there are a lot of other ones to checkout as well. Hopefully something on this part of my Top 10 Anime (of all time) 2023 Edition interests you.

Top 50 Anime – 20 through 11

20. Steins;Gate

Like I said, this is one that was on the top of the list for me for a long time. I still love it and have fond memories of staying up late and binging it because it’s that good. It’s one of the best time travel shows I’ve ever seen and one of the best time travel things period. It’s up there with something like Primer in terms of time travel.

But to do it that well, you need part of it to be that time travel goes wrong. And it does in this show, and because it does, there are some heavier moments with it. One that I probably should watch again, it’s not that long, but it’s that good.

19. Kaguya-Sama: Love is War

Now for one of them that I watched the most recently, this one is amazing. It’s a super fast paced comedy that I love. I saw the first episode or maybe two, in Japanese a bit ago. And I thought it was great, but it’s a lot of reading. Well, turns out that he dubbed version is amazing as well. Ian Sinclair is able to overact in it as the narrator and it really sets the tone for this fast, smart, and absurd romance. The two characters who should fall in love and do love the other can’t admit it because it would be losing. So it becomes a battle to get the other to admit their feelings.

The reason it didn’t work for me in Japanese is that there is so much reading, like I said. This reminds me of witty slapstick comedies where it is a mile a minute dialog. Bringing up Baby is a great example of that. This is way more sarcastic and still as over the top. One that I really think will appeal to a lot of people, even if you don’t like romance anime.

18. Ghost Hunt

I like to find horror anime to watch, from time to time. You’ll notice not a ton on my list, though. Mainly because a lot of them are just okay. Ghost Hunt, however, really was a ton of fun. And I like how it worked as well. It didn’t do the thing where it was one massive horror/ghost hunt that happens. But it’s also not monster of the week. Each case that the team investigates takes a few episodes. That time to breath lets them build up the horror and build up the lore. Each case wraps up quickly enough though so it doesn’t drag.

17. Mashle

I expect Mashle to move higher over time. It’s an anime that doesn’t set itself apart as something that is completely unique. In fact, a lot of what Mashle does, the main character who is the chosen one to bring balance to a corrupt world that looks down on those who can’t cast magic, it’s pretty normal. It’s set in a school, also normal. But it then makes fun of those tropes.

The main character, Mash Deadburn is a moron, how he will bring balance who knows. He also is insanely strong, that’s how he makes up for not being able to do magic. But it’s not that he overpowers everyone, he has to use it to pretend to be doing magic because otherwise he’d be cast out from society. This is a good action and comedy anime storyline.

16. Bofuri

We’ll see were this one lands, I need to watch the second season of Bofuri. But the premise is a fun one. A girl takes up playing an RPG. But she’s afraid of dying and getting hurt in the RPG. It’s her first time playing one. So she maxes out her defense, that’s part of the long title. And as she does that, this sweet RPG player comes up against more powerful, more cutthroat players, but can she overcome them just with her defense? And will she lose her sweetness? That’s the biggest part of this pretty wholesome feeling anime.

15. Assassination Classroom

Assassination Classroom

Assassination Classroom is another one that was higher on my list, and it’s dropped some. This is an absurd anime again. The main character is an “alien” who needs to be killed before they destroy the world. Well, they take up teaching a remedial class of students who need to learn but also are tasked with coming up with a creative way to take him out. Because he knows he needs to die, but he’s not going to make it easy.

The whole thing is really built around the emotional stories and growth of the students. But it’s done with one of the weirdest backdrops ever. Assassinate your alien teacher is not where you’d expect to get character development and growth stories from.

14. A Returners Magic Should Be Special

I’ve found a trope that I really like which A Returners Magic Should Be Special is one of. What do you do when you know how everything ends. You know that in the end, everything is for not because you fail. But now you’ve been sent back to where you started at, how do you do it differently. That’s the question that is being asked in this action and adventure anime. Where there are portals opening up and a dragon at the end of them destructs and destroys the world. The main character’s mind is thrown back into his body when he started out training. So what is he going to do different.

I like the story, I like the overpowered nature. And I really appreciate that it is a fun character as well. This could be dark, and there are some elements or some ways where it feel like it is. But overall the story is handled pretty lightly, there are fun moments, and I want more of it.

13. Horimiya

This is one that we, both my wife and I, read first before watching. I think that helps build it up some as an anime and as a romance. The books are great, and the anime, while it bounces around and basically wraps up the whole story in a season, and then goes back, it’s weird. But the heart of the story is great. Two highschoolers fall for each other, but both of them kind of live a different life in and outside of school. It’s just a good heartfelt and funny romance anime.

12. Spy X Family

The biggest hit in the past few years. I mean, you can say Attack on Titan, but that had it’s start before the past few years. Spy X Family is about a spy who needs to set-up a family to get close to a political leader. Turns out, you can lie about that, and he creates a fake family. It has some spy stuff, it has some assassin stuff. But it’s really about that family element. How does the spy, and their fake spouse an assassin, keep their hidden lives hidden from each other? Plus, how do they actually act like a family?

Komi Can't Communicate

11. Komi Can’t Communicate

This anime is just adorable. Komi Can’t Communicate is about Komi, a girl who has severe social anxiety and can’t communicate with anyone. She comes off as cold and aloof because of that. But when one of her classmates actually spends the time to reach out to her in a way that she can handle, they start to form a bond. And she doesn’t want to be cold and aloof, but wants to make 100 friends. So how can he help her do that when she can’t talk. The anime is adorable, and it’s a good romance, and there are a lot of funny moments. It’s one that is just easy watching in the best way possible.

Final Thoughts

There it is, the penultimate last. Next week, and I will remember to write it for next week, the Top 10 Anime for me. Don’t expect a ton of heavy hitters on the list, though a number of them are quite popular. I have my type of anime that I like, though I will watch most.

Based off of what I’ve written about thus far, which anime do you think will make the top of the list? And which anime do you think I should continue to checkout that maybe I haven’t. Let me know down in the comment section below.

Which anime make the list of ones that I really enjoy?

The post Top 15 Anime List – 2022 Ranking first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
It’s been a while since I did a Top 10 Anime list. At the end of each year, I do a list of Top 5 ones that I watched for the first time that year. I feel like with the anime that I’ve watched now, I can do a list like that. And, well, it’s going to be an interesting list with a wide variety of anime on it. But let’s get to the list of my favorite anime. And yes, this is a Top 15 with 4 honorable mentions, that’s because, well, my honorable mention list at 10 was getting too long.

Top 15 Anime

HM: Fruits Basket, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K, Restaurant to Another World, After School Dice Club

These were all close. Fruits Basket is so heartfelt. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K is really funny. And Restaurant to Another World is a lot of fun with great food. After School Dice Club is about board games, and it’s good but not as great as it could have been so just misses as well. All of these, probably, could have made it only my list.

15. Ghost Hunt

Oddly enough, this is the only horror one on my list. Ghost Hunt is about a kid who can deal with ghosts who has his own agency. But he’s not the main character, the main character is a girl who gets roped into being his assistant and might be better at the job than he is. He knows how all the things work but is too cold and calculating. It’s a nice balance of everything for an older anime.

14. BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense

There are some premises for anime that just get me. BOFURI is one of them. A girl joins an MMORPG and she’s worried about it. What will it be like to die, will it hurt, and she really doesn’t want to die. So instead of leveling up by going out on epic adventures, she levels up by grinding and focusing only on her defensive stats. It’s a fun play on the genre with a character getting really over powered, but in such an odd way.

Gamers! Cover

13. Gamers!

This follows another trope that I really enjoy. A main character who maybe is a bit out there, they have their own nerdy hobby or odd thing that they do that makes them not quite fit in. Gamers! follows that character who loves video games, into finding out that there are more people like them in the world directly around them. It’s cute and heartfelt and just works well.

12. Dagashi Kashi

Dagashi Kashi is all about yummy snacks, their history and eating them. Mixed in with all of that is a slice of life show that is a lot of fun. You might notice there are a few shows on the list about food. Anime tells a lot of really enjoyable stories about food and Dagashi Kashi gives more of a unique flare to it than some. While not the highest on my list, it is very realistic and focused on tradition of these snacks and shops.

11. Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? does some of my favorite anime tropes. Mainly the clueless main character so focused on one goal he doesn’t notice the group forming around them. This isn’t the best I’ve seen of that, but Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? works well and especially for the first season gives a fun romp. I don’t like season two nearly as much, but it is an anime that I keep on coming back to. There is just something wholesome about the main character that makes this fantasy, and fairly standard fantasy, but with good twists, fun to watch.

10. The Devil is a Part-Timer

This Isekai really handles the genre differently. Most Isekai a character gets pulled out the real world and into a crazy world. In this case, the Devil is pulled out or leaves their own world and ends up on Earth without enough power to go back. So now he needs a part time job. This is another one that I need to watch again, I started the 1st season because a 2nd season just came out. But it’s fun and well done.

9. Cowboy Bebop

Used to be higher on my list. And in terms of technical, this is probably the best anime on the list. An anime that tells interesting stories and all set to different types of music, it’s just fascinating. But it also falls into that category of an anime that I’ve watched, and I’d watch again, but I’m less likely to pick it myself. Still, the music in it is so good and just the story that it weaves, it’s done so well.

8. Space Dandy

Space Dandy is another anime set in space and this one is easier to watch again, mainly because it’s such a comedy. The main character, Space Dandy, is not a competent character at all. But through dumb luck he somehow survives. He doesn’t do so well, but with a cat and a robot he somehow makes it work. Just well done comedy throughout this series.

Food Wars

7. Food Wars!

Food Wars is odd to me that it’s so high. Mainly because it can be a bit inconsistent. There are some arcs in the show that are amazing. It is also one of the highest on the list that has this amount of fan service. But it’s generally fan service overall and played for a very specific reason. But the whole concept of the show is about being the best chef that you can be, and the enjoyment that can come from food.

6. Assassination Classroom

Assassination Classroom might push Food Wars! for the weirdest anime on the list. Part of the moon is destroyed and an alien decides to become a teacher of students who are poor students so that they can try and assassinate the alien. That sounds so crazy, but what worked for me with it is that it tells a good story of the characters coming together. Yes, it is an completely absurd situation and setup, but somehow it manages to work.

5. My Senpai Is Annoying

Now we hit a few that fall more into that slice of life category. My Senpai Is Annoying is about an office worker who has an annoying senpai that she is under. Well, maybe he’s not quite as annoying as she thought. It’s really a romantic comedy of characters liking each other but not knowing how the other character likes them back. Plus a whole lot of fun and crazy situations to get into revolving around work. I think the whole work setting is a lot of fun and works really well for this type of story to make it feel different than high school.

4. Komi Can’t Communicate

But speaking of high school and romance we have Komi Can’t Communicate. It’s about Komi who is the prettiest girl in the class and seems aloof. But really she just has crippling anxiety when talking to people and can’t for the most part and it is a lot of effort for her when she does. Tadano, new to the class ends up making friends with her through writing and agrees to help her with her goal of making 100 friends. This is a sweet show with a lot of weird characters.

3. Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki

And then another high school series. This one again about a nerdy character who loves the game TakFam, think Smash Bros sort of game. To him, it’s the best game ever, much better than life. When he finds out that the #2 player of the game in Japan is in his town too, he’s #1, they decide to meet up. It turns out to be a classmate, but not one who is a bottom-tier character like him, someone who doesn’t think that life is a lousy game. Can she convince him and level him up so that he’s not a Bottom-Tier character anymore?

Steins Gate Characters

2. Steins;Gate

Constantly a high one on my favorites list. And it’s also one that I probably would watch again, but man, would it be hard to watch again. There is so much depth in this time travel story with tragedy and distress. But the story is told and woven together so well that it just stands out. While Cowboy Bebop can be heavy and gorgeous, Stiens;Gate for heavier anime on my list, just tells such a good complete story. And it handles time travel in such a good way.

1. Sword Art Online

Finally, and I know this one bounces around a lot for me, we have Sword Art Online (SAO). SAO is just comfort food of an anime for me. It gives me big adventure, romance, comedy, all wrapped up in one. But it is mainly about that adventure and how the characters are navigating different worlds, of computer games, as they go. And the craziness that can end up following from these games into the real world or the other way around. Plus, there is just so much story and so much work done on developing the characters, you care for them as you go through it.

Final Thoughts

It’s tough to do a Top 10, it’s even tough to do a Top 15. I’ve really found myself gravitating towards watching anime a lot. It used to be and it does happen in certain time periods, of throwing on a cooking show or some house remodeling show. But there is just so much anime out there that I need to checkout still and want to checkout. I actually went through recently and created a massive list, I just don’t know when I’ll have time.

And I am guessing that I’ll think about it and come up with a show that I missed that I really enjoyed. And for as many good or great anime as I watch, there are a lot that are just fine. Pretty rarely do I end up sticking with and watching one that is bad. But if it’s short enough I might power through it. I can think of one example which just went from being okay starting out to so bad at the end.

Whether it's a reboot, a season when there won't be, or just a spin off, I want more.

The post Top 5 Television Shows I Want More Of first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
So, at work we had a bit of a chat about some older television shows. And then some chatting about movies as well, but it brought this question to my mind. What show, movie, book, board game, would I just want more of. It could be a reboot if it’s been done for a long time, it could be a spin off, or it could be just another season even though there aren’t more coming. But we’re starting off with television shows.

5. Firefly

I think that this one could end up a lot of people’s lists. I’m not sure that you could get back the whole cast which made the show so good. But I think there is a chance to come back with a fun series set in that universe, because there are lots of parts of the universe that need to be looked into still. And the aesthetic of that show is strong enough to set a whole lot more than just the stories around the crew of the Firefly.

So I wouldn’t want a straight reboot for this one. Mainly because I’m happy with what we got from it. But I’d like to see another show set in the same universe. A story tied into a group trying to overthrow the Alliance from within the Alliance would probably be the direction that I go. Focus less on those in the rebellion who were fighting, but now those who are trying to subvert and stop what is happening.

4. Ghost Hunt

An anime that I’m not sure if it did everything there were books for or not. But I’d love to see a reboot of this, and a straight up reboot. Something that tells the stories I saw before in Ghost Hunt, but just redone. It’s an older anime coming out in 2006, at least for one that was dubbed. And I’d like to see it redrawn and come out again, tell the same stories and then tell more.

I really like the supernatural stories that it does tell. And where the series ends, it feels like there should be more stories being told. I doubt that this would ever happen though because there are always a plethora of new anime coming out.

Ghost Hunt

3. Grimm

Grimm is a good supernatural show as well about all the crazy creatures living in our world and kind of this hidden away world. I could also put The Lost Girl on the list as well. But The Lost Girl has more iconic performances from side characters and I don’t know what I’d want those changed up. In Grimm, I think you could almost reboot it.

But I would probably go with telling a similar story, just tweak it as you go. Change up the location, story beats, and everything, you could rehash some of it. But it’d easy enough to just add in and build more stories into Grimm. I don’t need the same characters back, but I’d love to dive back into that world.

2. Farscape

Farscape is such a fun show. It is most definitely crazy and creative, but in a very good way for me. I like the puppets as well in it. I think that there is just more story, again, to tell with that show. It’s been too long so I don’t think you could come back and finish off the story that easily, but I’d like to see a straight up reboot for this.

With that reboot, I don’t want it to become all fancy. I love that there is a bit of high quality special effects, but also practical as well. It makes the show more charming. And with the depth of story, it is fairly surface through a lot of it, I think it lends itself well to that more comforting blend versus the highly polished sci-fi shows that can come out now. So I wouldn’t want the aesthetic to change, but I’d love the story to be retold and finished.

1. Stargate

This is one which might actually be happening. Or at least has a better chance of happening because of how successful the franchise was with SG-1 and Atlantis. And I don’t need a reboot. I don’t even need returning actors, though a cameo or two could be fun. Instead I’d want it to just build on the world(s) that it has created.

Stargate is such an amazing show, and with how it is set-up, it’s certainly possible to explore so many more worlds. I know that they have done a ton of different things. And I wouldn’t mind bringing back in some more of the classic bad guys of the show. But also, introducing a whole new threat would be cool as well.

Final Thoughts on Television Shows

There are a lot of shows that I’d be interested in seeing come back. I mentioned Lost Girl, I’d be fine with a reboot on that. I just want some of the actors back, even though they are older. That one also needs that reboot but tweaks to improve the writing. Veronica Mars is another one that could work to have a new version, same premise but all new cases. Or more recently The Librarians, I really loved that show, or Warehouse 13 and Eureka.

But let me know what shows you maybe wanted more of? Or maybe some that are older and you’d love to see them take another stab at it.

I have a list of 5 that you could checkout from anime to monster of the week.

The post TV Shows for Halloween first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Halloween is coming up, and when it’s spooky season that means it’s time to watch spooky shows and movies, play spooky and spoopy board games and generally just enjoy the colorful weirdness of the season. We’ve gotten a lot of good shows for Halloween over the year, stuff from monsters of the week to trippy weirdness. Let’s talk about some of them you might want to checkout before the holiday.

Ghost Hunt

It’s the only anime on the list, but it’s a good one. This one leans into Japanese horror but is also still an anime. That means that it has some lighter moments in it. However, it also does have some really good horror moments in it. Mai finds herself in a school where there is a ghost. She runs into the president of the SPR, Shibuya Psychic Research, and gets a job with him. She then goes on a lot of adventures and mysteries with ghosts and other monsters. That’s the basics of it, but it’s a nice fast anime to watch that I really enjoyed.

Locke & Key

Locke & Key is a great one to checkout because the second season is coming out tomorrow. Locke & Key follows the Locke family as they return to Rendell’s home after his death. His wife and kids go there, and Bode, the youngest starts to hear weird noises. These lead him to finding keys and to finding Dodge. The keys do amazing things, very fanciful and terrifying in nature, but Dodge doesn’t seem to want to use them for quite as simple things as Bod would want.

Locke & Key is on Netflix and based off of a comic book series by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son. The comics are much more violent and adult in nature than the show. The show on Netflix is more YA (young adult) focused, which I think works well. It still has that sense of uneasiness and dread in the show, but makes it more accessible to people. Really fun one to watch and not that long a watch.

Dark

Another Netflix show, this one about time travel and murder. I will say immediately that this is a show that is better watched sub titled than dubbed. The difference is fairly jarring while watching dubbed. And it’s a show that at least the first season, I need to watch the others, is really good. The time travel is well done and the mystery that is happening in the town works so well. The whole premise just feels like something different. And the title definitely matches what it is.

The show itself isn’t too violent or really contain many jump scares, but the mystery that is progressing throughout the story is just unsettling. The time travel works to make it even more unsettling as you go along. Aesthetically this just works really well.

Supernatural

It’s hard to make a list like this without putting Supernatural on it. I have not watched all of the show, it is a lot to get through. But it is a good show for Halloween because it is monster of the week a lot of the time. Sam and Dean are brothers who know about all the things that go bump in the night. It also has that element of angels and demons throughout the whole series as well.

Now, this is a series that you could start watching now and probably continue until Halloween of 2022, so much longer than most. And it is repetitive in what it does. But the first couple of seasons are more horror focused and tell an interesting story. Then after that it will get into more spoopy than spooky at times, but it’s still fun. There is just a ton of it so beware.

Helix

This one might be harder to track down, but this was a SyFy channel show that was basically The Thing, but not. An experiment goes wrong on the south pole and this disease or thing is spreading to people on the base. Is it an accident or is there some more nefarious plan behind it. The fact that I’m asking that question means that there is a more nefarious plot behind it, but how it unfolds is good. And who is infected and how they try and avoid getting infected works really well.

This, I think, had two seasons on SyFy. I can’t vouch for the second season, but the first is worth a watch by itself. This horror is all about the suspense of the unknown and is probably more traditional horror and jump scares than almost anything else on the list.

What Are Your Favorite Shows to Watch at Halloween?

I know there are a lot of horror shows out there that I didn’t mention and some that are more spooky than spoopy. There are shows like Grim which I need to watch again that I really liked. But are there any out there, knowing my tastes, that you think I’d like?

The post Halloween Horror: Halloween TV Shows first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
It’s the spooktacular week leading up to Halloween! That means that we are going to be wall to wall, bumper to bumper, jump scare to jump scare talking about Halloween and Halloween things! We start off with some scary shows to checkout for Halloween Haunting.

Now, you’ll quickly realize that I don’t love gore horror and jump scare horror can be done really well and I’ll like it, but I do love me some B horror. So this list might have a little of those on it, but it’s going to be a lot of more monster feature shows that really feel like Halloween to me.

Stranger Things

Got to start off with the classic, if you haven’t watched it, I will say it’s not that scary if that’s what has been holding you back. The way this type of show is described is as “Kids on Bikes”. That means that you’re dealing with almost an adventure story, but with elements of horror thrown in as the kids are trying to figure out everything that is going on. Normally there is some element of the parents not believing them and the kids being right in the end and probably a teenager who is a non-believer who ends up helping in the end. Stranger Things definitely follows a lot of those tropes, but it builds upon them in interesting ways and while a lot of the 80’s Kids on Bikes style horror or just horror in general that this is based off suffered from poorer writing, Stranger things has very solid writing. Overall just a wonderful Halloween feeling show.

The Order

This one is as much a teen drama as a horror show, but you follow Jack Morton as he gets into the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose, a secret, and magic, organization that his mother had gotten into before her mysterious death. This one is all about the monsters, the crazy magic, college aged kids, and basically anything and everything that could go wrong going wrong. This is not a serious horror show at all, but the monsters in it, the magic in it, if you want campy Halloween that somehow still takes itself seriously, this one is pretty solid for that. Don’t expect anything ground breaking, but sit back and enjoy a pretty convoluted ride.

Supernatural

If you want your Halloween show to take itself a bit more seriously, at least some of the time, Supernatural might be the right show for you. This is still monster of the week, but with CW melodrama. This ranges from a show that is straight up horror as it goes through it’s monster of the week to one that is extremely self aware and back again to horror. There’s a lot of this show, so if you wanted to wrap it up before Halloween, don’t plan on sleeping.

Ghost Hunt

This one is a bit different because it’s an anime. This one, as the name suggests is all about hunting ghosts. Teenagers hunting ghosts to be specific, but it does a good job of blending some wonderful horror elements together with some pretty fast and witty dialog in it as well. This has an interesting feel to it as well because being anime, the horror elements are more Japanese which is something that we have a vague idea of because of things like The Ring or as was hinted at in Cabin the Woods, but even those are an Americanized version of that. If you don’t know if you like anime, but you do like horror this is less “anime” in the sense of what people generally would consider.

Helix

Finale one for the list, and I do like to highlight some different ones, even though Stranger Things and Supernatural should always show up. But Helix takes horror in another direction. Playing off of the vibes of the The Thing, this Sci-Fi channel show is all about surviving in the Antarctic when something is going horribly wrong at the scientific outpost. It has a lot of those, who is or isn’t infected aspect of it going on, and overall, I enjoyed it when I watched it a while back. It’s one that I want to revisit as I know I never completely finished it that second season. If you want something that is more true horror and less Halloween horror, Helix definitely leans into that.

What are some other ones I could have or should have mentioned? I can think of a lot of them, and maybe next year I’ll do a massive Halloween show list or put out some sort of bigger list with a ton of different shows and types of Halloween shows so you can pick the ones that look best to you to watch.

Urban Fantasy, what is it? And how do you create good urban fantasy?

I’ve mentioned Urban Fantasy before in some articles, but I wanted to delve deeper into it and provide some more examples beyond my normal one.

Urban fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy in which the narrative has an urban setting.[1][2] Works of urban fantasy are set primarily in the real world and contain aspects of fantasy, such as the discovery of earthbound mythological creatures, coexistence or conflict between humans and paranormal beings, and other changes to city life.[3][4] A contemporary setting is not strictly necessary for a work of urban fantasy: works of the genre may also take place in futuristic and historical settings, actual or imagined.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_fantasy

I figure I can just drop in some Wikapedia knowledge to get the conversation going since they are going to define it basically the same way that I’m going to describe it. I would say that urban fantasy basically does always show up in a contemporary setting at least from what I’ve seen. But as they say it isn’t required, but it is extremely normal for it to show up in that contemporary setting.

The best way that I would describe it is that it takes a realistic setting, generally earth and our world, and then puts a twist on it. Whether it’s Fae creatures as in Grimm and The Dresden Files, to the weird London Below in Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, there are large chunks of the normal world still there for the story. These twists on the world can be highly hidden such as in Neverwhere or sometimes very obvious as in The Dresden Files, though magic and monsters are still generally kept under wraps there as well.

What generally makes strong urban fantasy is the balance of normalcy with the absurd. You see the normal world happening around the characters and you often see the characters pining for or rushing headlong into the more magical aspect of the world. While I wouldn’t quality Harry Potter as Urban Fantasy since most of it takes place at Hogwarts, it does have some elements of urban fantasy, and Harry is someone who rushes headlong into the magical world because anything seems better than living in the space beneath the stairs. That compares to Grimm where Detective Nick Burkhardt is not all that excited to find out what else is going on in the world. It makes his job much harder and makes his life much crazier in ways that he doesn’t want. I think this really helps drive the home the humanity of the main character as you see the struggle. There is some Urban Fantasy, and Lost Girl is an example, where the main character, Bo, loses touch with her humanity seemingly as the series goes along. Now, a lot of that is just writing, but it hurts the show when the focus on that has been lost and it was stronger at the start of the show. They made some poor decisions in the show by trying to be edgy, but unfortunately the writing dropped off too much and the acting talent wasn’t up to snuff to pull it off.

When I think about it, I don’t think that there are many particular things that make urban fantasy strong that doesn’t make most other books, movies, and TV shows strong. It has to focus in on an interesting character with flaws and have an interesting plot to go along with it. Within that a good focus on the tension between the two worlds is generally one of the driving forces. Shows like Grimm and Supernatural, which isn’t pure urban fantasy, but is closely aligned to Urban fantasy, and book series like The Dresden Files, all the main characters are the gate keepers keeping the world of monsters and other scary things back and allowing humanity to live in blissful ignorance of what is actually going on. That tension, whether or not the main character is the gate keeper, is probably the thing that is most unique to urban fantasy as it’s the most consistent theme to it. However, it is certainly not a required part of urban fantasy or something that is only limited to urban fantasy.

So I’ve mentioned some of the examples of Urban Fantasy that I’m familiar with. There are certainly a whole lot more out there, and I’m always interested in finding more to read. So I’m going to ask for some suggestions and then give some suggestions of my own. If you have some that you’ve enjoyed, let me know.

The Dresden Files
My #1 recommendation. The books are very well done and Jim Butcher does a really good job of developing an interesting world with interesting monsters. The series starts off a bit rough as it was some of if not Jim Butcher’s first major writing experience. But besides that, it’s about Harry Dresden, a wizard PI in Chicago who is basically one of the only forces holding back hordes of darkness from not just consuming the city, but at times the world.

Grimm
I believe this show was met with mixed reviews, and I will say that there is some camp factor to the show and special effects. However, I liked the show. It is a bit monster of the week throughout a lot of it, but it does that well. The main character is interesting, and the creatures and building up of the world is quite interesting as well.

Neverwhere
Probably my first introduction to Urban Fantasy, though I might have read the first Dresden Files book before. Neverwhere is an interesting and crazy crafted world of the London Below. A normal human runs across a girl named Door whose life is in danger. After helping her, Richard Mayhew starts having changes in life, and he starts to disappear from the world. He finds out that he’s now moved from his normal life in London to being part of London Below.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
One that people might not think about as it’s moved on from being part of the collective view, but like Supernatural, it’s a modern show with monsters. The reason that I would say this is more urban fantasy, at least as how I would qualify it, is that Buffy takes place in a single town of Sunnydale that just happens to be sitting on a hellmouth. It’s a classic show and one that does have a bad season or two in there, but is mostly very strong.

Just to do some more quick hits based off of what other places are calling Urban Fantasy that I’ve enjoyed:
Warehouse 13
Supernatural
Reaper
Stranger Things
The Librarians
All fun TV shows

Big Trouble in Little China
From Dusk Til Dawn
The Last Witch Hunter
The Librarian
Underworld
All solid movie choices, though a lot of them B-movies.

Little Witch Academia
Blood Blockade Battlefront
Ghost Hunt
Those are some anime options.

American Gods
Harry Potter
IT
Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Last two I would say are urban fantasy adjacent books. But I recommend all of these books.

So you can see that I’ve watched a lot, but what are some other recommendations especially in books and anime?

Who do you call when there is a suspected spirit haunting your school, home, or church?

Shibuya Psychic Research Center

SPR is the vehicle for the characters in the anime Ghost Hunt. It really focuses around Ayoko and her powers to see into the spirit realm. However, she, up to a few months ago, was just your average high school girl. Other than the fact that she really liked talking about ghosts and sharing ghost stories. When weird things start happening at her school she meets Kazuya Shibuya who runs the SPR. She ends up helping him and she gets hired into SPR as his assistant. She meets the rest of the cast of characters who are also looking into the paranormal and together, they end up taking on a lot of different cases.

This anime has a few moments where it has that harem style anime feel, but it’s interesting because it’s offset from the main character. Ayoko does seem to pull people to her in some ways, but Kazuya does more so, so the group is focused around him. However, the story is clearly focused around Ayoko. Also the surrounding characters are less stereotypes and more focused and developed characters in their own right. So while I’d normally say anything that uses that harem trope is a bit cliched, this one works and feels better developed than most.

One thing that I do really like about this anime is the case structure. In typical television I feel like there are two standard ways to do a show where people take on a case to solve. You either are doing the case of the week so it’s wrapped up in the 20 or 40 minutes depending on the length of the show, with an occasional two part episode at the end of a season. Or you have a big case that’s running through the whole season, and the season might only focus on that, or it might be the case where it’s the case of the week as well as story line running through the whole season. In the case of Ghost Hunt, each case takes between three and six episodes. So you’re able to get a little more meat into the plot lines and they definitely do that by creating some quite creepy stories and interesting character development. But it never feels like you’re stuck in a single story too long though, you always know the case will be coming to the end and they’ll be moving on to the next thing.

Another thing that stands out to me about this anime as compared to a lot of others is that it is a true suspense/horror type of anime. It doesn’t rely on blood and guts to make itself terrifying but instead uses twisted and psychological situations as well as imagery effectively that is unsettling or off putting. That’s some of the reason that I picked the anime, one it was something different looking than the normal anime but more so, because it seemed to lean into the horror and spooky side of things. In my opinion it does that horror quite well, and while it isn’t going to give you many jump scares, the balance between normalcy and unsettling is well done, and the cases are well crafted. And this is something I want to see in more shows, but anime and live action.

Overall, I found this to be an enjoyable anime. I thought that with the characters in the show, it developed into something more than it could have been, which was pleasantly surprising. There are some definite creepy moments in the anime and how creepy they episodes might be would depend upon the case as some cases are a bit tamer or funnier, but that was done for balance in the show which could have just been dark, darker, and darkest if they hadn’t been careful. I think the uniqueness of the feel of it, the fact it did the suspense and horror well together is what will make it stick out for me. The downside is that there was only a single season of the anime. Looking on Amazon, there is clearly more manga printed for it but there was only a single season for the anime, and since the anime came out in 2006, I don’t think we’re going to get a second season.

Now, who is going to like this anime? I don’t think that this will be one for everyone. While it won’t be too spooky for most people because it is more psychological, a fair number of the cases might have things that are a bit much to handle. The more you unravel in the cases the more disturbing things you generally uncover. But it isn’t particularly horrific, it’s more that it’s unsettling.

I was having some troubles coming up with animes for this one. There are very few animes that I’ve watched which I’d consider just to be horror or just to be Halloween themed. There are a number of them that have bits and pieces of it, but will then have a focus that goes somewhere else, but I’ve come up with a few that have a bit of that Halloween feel to them.

Little Witch Academia

It’s about witches, it counts. This show isn’t so much a horror show but gives you that more fun kid focused Halloween feel. It’s about a girl who doesn’t have that much magical talent but really wants to become a witch, like her hero Shiny Chariot. It follows her adventures and misadventures around the school and sometimes deals with deeper things, but often times is just cute and goofy. It definitely doesn’t fit the horror side of Halloween at all, but still feels properly thematic for the holiday.

Ghost Hunt

This is the opposite of Little Witch Academia, it’s about a paranormal investigator and the high school girl who helps him on the investigations, there are also other people who help as well from time to time. The cases they take on are often quite horrific and they definitely go for some jump scares, but mainly it’s just intense and disturbing. One thing that I really enjoy about this anime is that the cases are fairly short. So instead of just have one off episodes facing off against a monster, you get three to five episodes, but it isn’t isn’t so much that the whole show feels like it’s dragging out a single story.

Tokyo Ravens

I actually wouldn’t recommend this anime too highly because the story is just okay. However, it does fit into the Halloween theme as there are some horror elements in there. It’s about a group of students who are fighting against monsters in the system of their world. The plot is a little bit thin and predictable, however, and it has some of the weirder anime dynamics.

Blood Blockade Battlefront

Another one that I wouldn’t completely call traditional Halloween. This show definitely doesn’t have the purest horror feel, but in a world where there was a convergence between two worlds and there are crazy alien creatures and humans living together, it does fit into the Halloween theme. It’s also not like this show doesn’t have some weird or unsettling things that are horror like as well. This is a very well done anime, and the story arcs, especially in the first season, are really well done. Probably the best part about the anime is the world that was built. It’s so crazy and so well done. The one downside for me is the build up to the moves, where they announce them and you see it written on the screen as well. The anime is also very pretty to watch as compared to some of the other ones.

Case in point: Excalibur from Soul Eater will take you on a random flight of madness and poorly told stories.

Soul Eater

Death is leading a school that is going to fight witches, what could be more Halloween? Probably quite a number of animes, but this one does have a few undertones that match up with Halloween. This falls into the same category as Little Witch Academia where it’s much sillier. But it has that goofy kids feeling for Halloween while getting heavier and darker at times. The anime doesn’t end extremely well, but generally is a really fun anime. I would compare it to the heaviness of a movie like A Nightmare Before Christmas, where it can have a couple creepy moments here and there, but generally is more light hearted, and it has one of the better anime characters of all time in Excalibur, he sings with a voice like an angel.

Now, I’m sure there are a ton more animes that I could have mentioned, had I watched them. I thought about D.Gray-man, but the anime is just too long for the amount of story that happens in it, and I might have given up on completing it because I didn’t care that much about what was happening in it anymore. There are other animes that I’ve seen which have some horror episodes are smaller horror arcs, but generally don’t give off a monster, horror, or Halloween feeling like the animes that I’m looking for in these articles.

What are some of your favorite horror based animes? I know that I’m always looking for more that are good in that genre.
