This can be a reboot, set in the universe or something else that I'd want. Let me know yours.

The post Top 5 Movies I Want More Of first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Continuing what I started yesterday, what are the top 5 movies that I want more of? This could be a reboot, it could just be another installment in the series, or it could be another story set in the same world. I think that it is harder to come up with movies, though, than it is television shows. And I’m trying to avoid movies that have more coming. Like John Wick, I want more of that, but there is more coming.

So what movies are going to make the list, or universes created in cinema do I want to see even more of?

5. Chronicles of Narnia

I enjoy the book series a lot. Chronicles of Narnia is one of those series that I grew up reading or having read to me when I was younger. And it holds a spot in my heart. I thought that the recent adaptation was solid, but it didn’t surprise me when they didn’t get through everything.

And Chronicles of Narnia is kind of a cheat. I know that there is a show coming for it. I forget if it is Amazon or Netflix who is producing it. So I hope that is really good. But for a series that I watched growing up the original films and then the new releases, I’d love to see the whole thing redone again.

4. Star Wars

Another one that is a bit of a cheat. There are obviously going to be more Star Wars movies. And today the Obi Wan show came out on Disney+. And we got our first trailer for Andor yesterday and some other shows announced. But I want more Star Wars movies.

And in particular, I want more Star Wars movies, but ones that don’t have anything to do with Skywalkers. We’ve gotten through the Luke and Leia saga with an entertaining but odd sequel trilogy. And prequels that probably didn’t tell the story that they should have. I’d love something set prior to the events, or well after. Or maybe in a corner of the galaxy that never really had to deal with this situation. But I’m done with the Skywalker Saga and the shows, minus the Mandalorian, thus far, haven’t interested me that much.

3. Mutant Chronicles

This is probably not one that people know about or if they do, they just thought it was okay. But I really enjoy this film with Ron Pearlman and Thomas Jane. It’s an odd world, and I’d love to see it rebooted. And with rebooting it getting a whole series of these films set in the world that is originally a pen and paper RPG.

With it being an RPG that’d give more room for stories and more characters. I would probably want to get Ron Pearlman back just because I like him as an actor, as you’ll see with my next pick, but the movie for me is one. Now that I’m talking about it, I want to watch it again.

2. Hellboy

Speaking or Ron Pearlman, we have Hellboy on the list. Hellboy is going to be based off of a comic book series, and is about a half demon or devil, Hellboy, played by Ron Pearlman. He does a great job in the roll, but this is another one that probably needs a reboot.

The original one is a lot of fun and I like the absurdity of everything in it. But I think it’d make more sense to start again. I hope if and when this happens that they don’t try and make it too dark or gritty and keep the Hellboy style humor in it. But I’d love to see more.

1. Need For Speed

Finally, probably not one that people would guess. But I find dumb car movies generally fun. Especially with a it based off of a game series that I’ve played a lot of. I prefer Need For Speed to Fast and the Furious, but they are obviously going to get compared.

This is one where I don’t need a reboot. I just want more in the series. Aaron Paul is a lot of fun in the lead role for this. And I think that you could create something about street racing, or illegal racing, and come up with some very fun movies about it. Yes, it is basically Fast and the Furious again. But that one has gone so crazy with the series. I’d prefer to see Need For Speed continue and be a bit more grounded.

Final Thoughts

What movies would you want to see rebooted or more in the world of those movies? I think that it’s a harder list to make than television shows because a lot of television shows run for a little while and get cancelled before the story is done. With movies they more often tell complete stories in the movie, so it’s less open ended for wanting more.

For example, I love the movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but there isn’t really more story for that world. Maybe rebooting some of the 80’s B movie classics, but making a B movie is hard. So it is not something that’s too easy to come up with, at least for me. Hence the few that are most definitely cheating with Star Wars and Chronicles of Narnia.

I’m borrowing this idea from Grace Randolph, I’ll imbed the video below. She put out her videos a little while ago now, but as we move into Phase 4 of the MCU, we’re likely to see them start bringing some X-Men into the fold and the Fantastic Four.

So what would I want in a Fantastic Four film?

First, I don’t think I want an origin story. I think it would be cool if they were the ones who bought Stark/Avengers Tower in New York City. It would make a lot of sense to get them loosely tied into something. I also think it would be interesting to have the Avengers Tower, or Baxter Building as it would be known now, to come under attack with someone looking for something that Stark or the Avengers had left there. We get the idea that Reed Richard, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and The Thing have just been doing their thing, but are now being pulled into the world, I’d even give Reed and Sue their kids in the film, so we get something a bit different into the MCU, the actual family of powers. For a villain, I’d go with The Thinker or The Mad Thinker. The reason is that he’s tech related, and it would make sense for him to be after the Fantastic Four, but also interested in something left in Stark/Avengers Tower/Baxter Building.

So let’s get to casting, who would I want to play the various members of the Fantastic Four?

Reed Richards
What I’m Looking For – Someone who is a bit older to fill in this roll. I want them to have kids, and for me, Reed Richards should be older than Sue Storm by a little bit.

Sue Storm
What I’m looking For – I want someone who gives off some mother vibes, but also can be a fun character. Someone who can play supportive for Reed Richards and her kids, but also be impulsive enough to go off and do her own thing.

Johnny Storm
What I’m Looking For – Johnny Storm should be someone who is brash. Someone who has that swagger on the screen whether they’ve earned it or not, because they think they are awesome.

The Thing/Ben Grimm
What I’m Looking For – This should be portrayed by an actor who can get the depth of The Thing right. Someone who can see the Ben Grimm through The Thing, since The Thing isn’t just a monster.

Let’s get these characters cast…

Ben Grimm/The Thing – Ron Perlman
He’s the original Hellboy and I think that he’d be able to nail the gruff while tragic character. I like Perlman’s work generally, and think that he’d be able to pull it off. He can also be that deadpan character when need be for humor purposes.

Johnny Storm – Zac Efron
Probably too big a name to play Johnny Storm, but I think that he’d make a lot of sense in the roll. He plays that overconfident character well and Johnny is meant to be a bit comedic, but mainly just overconfident, and Efron seems like an actor who would make that work well.

Sue Storm – Kristen Bell
She just plays such sweet characters now. But we’ve seen her play that headstrong character in Veronica Mars. I think between Veronica Mars and now her sweet character, but still independent character in The Good Place, she’d fill the roll nicely. Now, she and Efron don’t look a ton alike, but even in the comics Sue and Johnny don’t look a ton like siblings.

Reed Richards – Andrew Lincoln
You know him from The Walking Dead, but he has the look that I think you’d want for Reed Richards, that serious character. He needs to be able to play the family man, but also someone who is smart and not always socially adept. I haven’t seen much of The Walking Dead, but I think that Andrew Lincoln would work quite well.

How about the Villains?

What you are really wondering about is Doctor Doom, The Silver Surfer and Galactus. I don’t think think we’ll get any of those characters in the first film, so I’m going to stick with my choice for a villain, The Thinker, with a bonus of Doctor Doom who might be hinted at.

The Thinker – Stanley Tucci
Tucci just seems to do well in most roles, and I see this as a one off role for him. He would be able to overact it a little bit, which would be fine for the sort of movie I want it to be.

Doctor Doom – Jeffrey Dean Morgan
When I made this pick, I didn’t realize he was the actor who played Negan in The Walking Dead, but I think he’d make a good Fantastic Four foil from his work as The Comedian in Watchmen. He just has that larger than life presence on the screen without being too much.

So what do you think about the casting? Who would you want in the main four roles or playing Doctor Doom?

The post GenCon Vol 1 – Planning first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Alright, I’m getting excited. GenCon is coming up in a while, August 1st through 4th, and I’m going this year! A board game and RPG convention with 60 thousand plus people in attendance will be crazy. I’ll probably get to see some people whom I’ve met at AcadeCon in previous years like Shane from Total Party Thrill and some of The RPG Academy crew. I’ll also probably get to meet some people that I’ve watched a lot of their videos, The Dice Tower crew, Rodney Smith from BGG and Watch It Played!, The Brothers Murph, and possibly more (or possibly less).

But, as cool as all that will be, the biggest part of going to GenCon will be seeing the new board games. Followed up by playing in some RPG’s and board games. And that takes us to what this is article is going to be about. It’s going to be planning events and what I want to do at GenCon.

Like I said, the biggest reason I’m going is to try out new games and probably pick up new games. But that is going to be a little bit looser as to how that works. But that really does come into how you plan going to a convention. I need to give myself enough time at the convention to do those more random things, and I can’t plan out my whole day. Even as I get a better idea as to what games might be there as the time gets closer, for new board games, it is going to be guesswork as to when I might be able to see them, if I am even able to see t hem at all. Again, there are going to be 60 thousand plus people there, so it’ll be a little bit crowded, I’m guessing.

So how do I go about picking the right number of events that I’m going to be doing?

I think that’s something that’s really tricky. The Con is a four day event, but like most Cons, that really means a three day event and Sunday. Sunday, things just slow down, but we’re planning on being there all of Sunday and heading back on Monday. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be games and things to do on Sunday, it just means that the crowd is thinning out a lot and your options are a bunch less.

So, Sunday, GenCon released it’s primary event schedule. The person I’m going with and I have already scheduled some time this evening where we can go over what events we are going to shoot for. But one thing we have to do is determine how many and what events we’re going to what to do.

I’ve gone through some of the list, but there are thousands of options, possibly even thousands of options per day. So how do you narrow that down? First know that you can’t do everything and even know that by the end you probably won’t want to do everything you have signed up for. Having the ability to do those random things, meet new friends and hang out with old friends, those are the strongest point of a convention. Being able to play a pick-up game of the new board game you got with some people is probably going to be more interesting than playing in yet another random D&D Fifth Edition game. And that’s not to say that those events are bad, but just limit your number.

Going through the list, I saved a few to an e-mail that I sent myself just to get an idea of what I was looking for. By a few, I mean over twenty items, and all of those were basically on the calendar before noon on Thursday, so all at the same time. Clearly I’m not going to go to all of those, but they give me a baseline and my friend a baseline of what to talk about when planning tonight. We can see what sort of events and games look interesting to us. We definitely don’t have to do the same thing all the time, but since it’s both our first times there, I’m sure we’ll be doing that more often than not. Also, we don’t know many people who are going, but might be getting a few more friends along.

So what am I looking to do there?

I’m looking at some board games that I’ve heard about in the past year but haven’t been interesting enough for me to pick up. Games like Chronicles of Crime, Too Many Bones, the Hellboy board game, and Village attacks. Beyond that, I looked at different RPG systems, stuff like Kids on Bikes (which I backed on Kickstarter), Sentinel Comics RPG, A Dresden Files game using Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition and one using Fate, Mutants and Masterminds. So I’m really mainly looking for stuff that I haven’t done before. I also put down some games, like Root, which has a new expansion, or Folklore: The Affliction and Arkham Horror 3rd Edition that I own but haven’t played yet. I hope I have by August, but at the same time, it would be a good learning situation.

That’s what I’m really looking for in what I do at conventions that is planned. I want to be able to learn how to play a new game, or see something done that’s new to me, even if the game itself isn’t. If someone were to want me to play a Mansion of Madness intro scenario again, I’ve done that three times, I’d pass. But if was an expansion of Mansions of Madness that I don’t have, I might consider it, because the experience would be new.

Along with that I’m also trying to be discerning when looking at stuff to see if what I’m looking at seems like something that’s been planned out or run before. Is it an established system or is it an RPG system that I haven’t heard of before? Because, you might get someone who is testing out a new system and it might not be enjoyable. I feel like RPG’s are also hit and miss because you don’t know what sort of group dynamic you are going to get. You hope it will be a good one, but you really don’t know. So I like to make sure that I really like the idea of the game. So, that’s why I’m drawn towards Dresden Files games, I think that seems cool to play in that world, no matter who is at the table. This is also a reason that I have a lot of board games on the list. The board games almost all already exist, so you know that they are at least interesting enough to get published, even if the game isn’t for me in the end. It won’t be a bad experience.

Another thing, and probably the final thing, to consider is how much time you want this to eat up. Like I said, I want to do a lot of browsing of the dealer hall to see the new games and pick up new games. But there are some of the events that are two hours I’ve looked at, and some of them are four, and I even saw a Twilight Imperium game that is set for going eight hours. The longer they are, the fewer of them that you can do. I’m the type of person who would probably schedule stuff for in the morning and then go in the afternoon around to different booths and things like that, but we’ll have to see what we want to do.

That’s really all the advice I have for planning at this point in time. I’ll probably do something coming up here in a few weeks about packing and what you will want to think about bringing for a convention. Conventions are an interesting beast, and I’ve been to CONvergence and AcadeCon, a couple Con’s that are a bit smaller than GenCon, so this will be a cool new experience.

Let me know what sort of events you look to do at a con. Do you find that you fill up too much time or not enough?
