The Game – Sleeping Gods

Let’s tackle another aspect of the game. I can’t talk about the same things every time, so let’s talk about command tokens in this game. Because, I think that command tokens are one of the more interesting elements to the game. Mainly because command tokens allow you to break the rules.

So, normally on a turn you have three steps – ship phase, event phase, and action phase. Command tokens allow you to break the rules, kind of, with that. And using ability cards does the same thing in some ways. Using an command token to activate something, whether removing a low morale, or drawing cards, whatever it might be, is almost like having an extra action.

Now, it isn’t as big as something like sailing the ship, a lot of the time. Though, I now have one that does that. And cooking a meal is less effective but still almost as good as going to port. It tends to be that you get slightly weakened versions of actions that you could take. And sometimes, they are better than what you can take, because you need to sale to a port to take the port action, makes sense. But you can cook a meal anywhere.

So the command tokens become this element of the game that you need to manage but not horde. Mainly because they always have a good use. It’s not like a health potion in an RPG, it’s clear when you need to use those. Here, you could save them, but also, you get more every turn. And to use them in combat to get that last hit, it’s so good.

The Drink

So last nights drink was a Negroni. That is made from equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and campari – or another grapefruit liquor. For me Negroni are some of the best drinks that you can have. Mainly because they are very bitter. But while being bitter they are also very refreshing. The flavor of the grapefruit and it’s influence on the whole drink is clear. Plus the nature of gin adds in a nice refreshing addition.

The Game – Sleeping Gods

I could just talk about how the game works again, but I want to do a mini compare and contrast with another one of Red Raven Games, Near and Far. Near and Far is a game that I like, but also one I was really excited about and ready to play. And when I played it, it is a good game, but a bit of a letdown. Does Sleeping Gods fix that?

This really comes down to story. In Near and Far, there is a promise of this game with great story and great mechanics and great choices. For me, the game doesn’t manage to pull it off. There are fun little bits of story, but it’s like hopping around in tiny bits of the world. Really, though, the game is about getting as many points as you can.

On the flip side, Sleeping Gods is also just little vignettes of story. But the point of the game is the story. There are no points that you are going for. It is about the story, and the theming works well. The crew is lost in a mysterious world. You of course get random vignettes because you don’t know anything. And the more you play, the more you find out about the world.

The Drink

We were back to drinking Scotch Whisky again. This time it was a Highland Scotch which finished with a nice little hint of chocolate in the flavor. And I talked about how there are four different areas for Scotch. The two main ones that you’ll find will be Highland and Islay. And the main difference is how much peat something like Islay has compared to Highland. Highland is a cleaner taste profile, but often coming with more bite to it.

It’s been a couple of weeks, but I’m back again with more Tainted Grail. Last time I had said that I was considering playing ahead to the point where I had lost last time, but I decided that I was going to take more time and head a different direction, so I should play it through on camera.

If you’re not familiar with Tainted Grail, that’s great, and this is a great jumping off point because we’re getting going in Chapter 1 of the story again. Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon is a big exploration and story driven game where players take on the roles of citizens of the town of Caunacht. Arev, the person I’m playing, isn’t a hero, but was a mercenary before running away to become a farmer. I’m going out adventuring not because I would be the first choice, but because those who would have been the first choice have gone missing in their expedition to keep the Menhir lit and stop the land from falling into Wyrdness. This is grim dark fantasy setting where everything is out to kill you and most of the things probably can.

I’ve taken on the start of the game a couple of times before but I haven’t made it too far, once due to bad luck, the next time do to rushing through the first chapter. This time I’m spending more time, with Arev, in the first Chapter, so you’ll have to see which way I go and if I can make it through the first chapter.

Last nights beer was Good Behavior form O’Dell. O’Dell makes my favorite beer, St. Lupulin. Good Behavior is their “Crushable” IPA. It is a lower ABV IPA and it certainly makes it nice and drinkable, while still maintaining a good hop profile. Definitely an IPA that I enjoyed a lot and as it gets warmer, between that and St. Lupulin, I have two really good summer beer options from them.

Back again last night with another game of Pandemic Legacy. How did it go this time? And what is happening in the world that is probably going to cause me to lose?

Pandemic Legacy is a Legacy game where you destroy components, add in new rules, and generally change up the board so that each person’s play through is unique. While all of that is going on, you’re still trying to cure a number of diseases so that the world isn’t wiped out. You can find more information on Board Game Geek.

Last nights malt was from Goose Island out of Chicago. It was the 312 Dry-Hopped. A good tasty summer beer where you can really tell that it’s dry hopped with the hop profile.
