Top 10 Games to Buy at Gen Con

Honorable Mention: Pirates of Maracaibo: Commanders

Is this 11 games, no it is not. Why, because Pirates of Maracaibo: Commanders is an expansion. So it doesn’t count as a game. No, more so you know if you are interested in this based off of if you like Pirates of Maracaibo or not. There are some new things like commanders that give you an asymmetric starting point. Plus there is rum as a new resource because it should have always been there. There are mix and match explore tracks. And there are now cannons and things you can fight with cannons. It adds a little bit, but not too much in my opinion.

10. Buffet Boss

So the list officially starts with Buffet Boss. This is a stacking game. I believe you draft things from a buffet and then you stack them on edge on your plate and you see how high you can stack them. The higher you get, the more satisfied you are with the buffet. Of course, if you get too much that isn’t good because they won’t balance or they will topple over. This sounds like a silly fun game.

9. Cat Tower

The next game on the list is another dexterity game and the last dexterity game. Cat Tower is a game where you work cooperatively to get a cat as high in the tower as you can. But the edges of things that you use to balance aren’t always even, some might even say that the tower is a bit cattywampus. The story of the game is sweet though and the game play looks fun.

So, if you want to know the story, and this is just the theme of the game not how it is plays, the cats mom has died. And the cat wants to build a tower up to heaven to find their mom. It’s a sad but sweet theme.

8. Trinket Trove

Trinket Trove is a set collection bidding game. This one has cute artwork, but let’s talk about how the game works Because that is what draws me into this one. In Trinket Trove a number of cards are flipped over that you bid on. And you bid with the cards in your hand to get them. So you are giving up something that you might need. The more cards you bid, the sooner you pick. But, and here is the twist, when you bid, the cards you bid are now a new pile of cards for people to take. So it is a great puzzly sounding time with a simple game but fun strategy.

7. Koi

Koi is on my Gen Con list just because it is pretty. If you can’t guess, Koi is about Koi and building a Koi pond. And this game looks great. I assume that each element of the Koi pond score in different ways. But there are elements like arches that you add to your pond, fish that you add and more. And it is a 3D presence to the game which I’m not sure is in every version of the game but I hope so. This is one just from an aesthetic point of view that I want to track down.

6. 12 Rivers

I feel bad about 12 Rivers being outside of my Top 5 on this Gen Con list because I think it looks really intriguing. Some of that, though, is that I mainly know the board. The board is this 12 marble track where there are spots for players to put their blockers. And then you release all the marbles. As the marbles travel down the rivers they hit a blocker. If you block early you might get a specific marble, you could get blocked too if you aren’t high enough. Or further down more will make it to you, but it might not be the ones you want.

That physical element of the game is what gets me. I love Potion Explosion for that. And this one gives me that same toy feel for the game. I hope that the rest of the game is good to go with it and that the game isn’t just all that.

5. First-Class Letters

First-Class Letters is a roll and write word game, and I like roll and write games. In this game you roll four dice. All the players need to find words that use three of those four dice and that don’t use the other one. The more of the letters you use, the more points you get. And you need to put them in alphabetical order. So that is going to be pretty easy the first few times, but, there is more. You also seed the first letter of three of the spots, in alphabetical order, so that is going to limit you more. I think this sounds simple but like a ton of fun.

4. Tricky Kids

Tricky Kids is a trick taking game that looks like it’s for kids. But I’m not 100% sure that it is. In this game you play three hands of seven cards each. And each time you need to assign the values to your cards. Yes, this game there are suits on the cards but no numbers. So you divvy up 21 points between them as you start playing. And yes, you want to win tricks, but when you win tricks you get tokens. And you know what the tokens are and when they are showing up. It sounds like a simple but very fun big twist in trick taking.

3. Slam Throne

Slam Throne could be my #1 on this list. But I think you’ll see why the other two beat it out. This is Dice Throne but pogs. Dice Throne teased and joked about this for years on April Fool’s Day. But it is finally a reality now. You play pogs with powers and abilities and try and take out your opponents stack before they take out yours. This sounds dumb and goofy and 100% a good time. I wish I was going to be at Gen Con because I expect this one to sell out. I asked for a friend to grab it for me, I hope they don’t stand in line early, I can always get it later.

2. Tag Team

Tag Team is a weird game because it gives me Dice Throne vibes, but it’s also auto-battler. So let’s talk about how this works. An auto-battler is a game that when it comes to fighting the fight just happens.

You start with two characters and one card for each character. You both flip over the cards and check what they do. Then after you play out those two cards, you draw three more and pick one to add to your cards. You add it without changing the order of the others. But you add it to the top, bottom, or middle and then you go again. So you start to figure out where to put a block for a big attack. But maybe your opponent thought you would so they changed that with how they added their card.

I love how it works and I love the head games for it. But it isn’t just all head games. As you pick between those three cards, you create strategies and synergies as you play. And the game comes with a ton of characters. I can not way to get this in my hands, I have it pre-ordered.

1. Ace of Spades

The final one on the list is Ace of Spades. This one is getting great reviews 8’s and 8.5 from the Dice Tower and they all really liked it. It is a solo or two player boss battling game. Now, I like a good boss battler, but this one is different with a weird west theme, but let’s talk about how it works.

You face off against monsters and bad guys and you want to take them down. How do you take them down? Not by rolling dice but by playing out poker hands. And each type of hand is going to do some damage. Better hands will do more damage. As you progress the enemies you face start to have powers and abilities that they use against you. But when you beat them, you get one time or ongoing powers as well.

The theme of this game is a ton like Balatro. But it is going to be simpler than that because Balatro changes cards and I’m glad it’s not a Balatro legacy game, though that could be cool. This is one that I’d wait in line for at Gen Con. But it is available to pre-order from Devir, so I just did that today.

Final Thoughts

Oh how I wish I was going to Gen Con. If you are, let me know about some of these games. And let me know which of these games are the most interesting to you. I also remind myself that all of these games will be available at retail at some point in time. So even if I don’t get them, like I said, I expect Slam Throne to sell fast, I will get it eventually. And I am really excited to try all of these games and give you reviews in the future.

Impressions of Welcome To The Moon Adventure One

So let’s talk about the first important thing. I made a mistake in my game play. I play where I use the ‘x’ to cover up one of the negatives that you get. That isn’t right, instead, what you should be doing is spending ships, once you reach the top of the ship track, to cover those up. I possibly made it easier for myself, or I possibly made it harder for myself.

Simplicity

Let’s talk about this first adventure, though. This is a simple adventure. Everything that you do is clearly printed on the board and even with the solo mode added, it’s easy to run. And I like it for that. It is a solid way to gain an understanding of the game. And this map still provides a lot of combos for players to link together. I love a good roll and write game where I fill in something and get a bonus that chains to another part of the board, and that even can still chain more. And this first adventure does that.

On the flip side, this is a simple adventure. That means that the choices are pretty limited, even more so than I’d say Welcome To… So for a first adventure, I think it might be something that turns people away from the game. Now, I still like it a lot and I want to play it more and I am going to be play it more. But if you expect to play Welcome To Your Perfect Neighborhood with all the different elements of scoring, this first map is not going to give you that.

Campaign

But that is one of the fun things about the game. I know that the next chapter is going to be different. I haven’t looked into how it is played yet, but the map is completely different. The first chapter is about getting the rocket ready to launch. And there is a little bit of different flavor text depending on what you pick. But then the next map, from what I can tell the rockets have launched for the moon and now we need to navigate safely there.

I don’t know what the game is going to do differently. Even the Astra Corporation is going to behave differently. So I understand and appreciate that the first adventure is the first step to that. Also, there is a lot of text in the campaign. How much can the campaign vary as you go? I doubt a ton, but it’s already a better campaign for a roll and write game than Paper Dungeons had.

Why Play A Digital Game?

Firstly, let’s talk about why we’re playing Gloomhaven and playing a digital game. I want to spend a little bit of time as to why play a digital game? There are a few reasons why I want to do this right now.

Let’s start with my brain space. Right now Mondays are fairly busy for me, when I’d be doing a campaign game, and between being on a job hunt as well as then the kid has swimming lessons in the evening, it feels rushed to try and set-up a game. It also feels daunting to learn a big campaign game right now. Don’t worry, I will get back to it. But playing a digital game that knows the rules feels a whole lot nicer for me.

Secondly, it’s easy for me to sit down and get streaming. Kind of like the first reason, but in particular, this means that I am going to be more consistent with it. The set-up doesn’t exist which means that I’ll be able to drop right in and play the game which means that I won’t take a break on the game. And that means that I’ll probably get through more of it.

Why Play Gloomhaven?

So why play Gloomhaven? There are other board games that are digital out there. I know I have played Clank digitally and Aeon’s End. And I could grab more Aeon’s End and kind of make a campaign out of it. But Gloomhaven, for the obvious reason, it is a campaign game. It’s going to play with an ongoing narrative, and I want to have some fun with that. Plus it’s an excuse to play more of a game that I love.

I am playing through Frosthaven right now and it’s amazing. If/when Frosthaven digital comes out, it could be what I play as well. But I can now go back to Gloomhaven after 7 or 8 years from when I first played and play it again. So I’m excited to experience it again.

What Does This Mean For Campaign Games on the Table?

But let’s talk about what it means for at the table. Firstly, it probably means that I won’t be doing a campaign game for streaming for a little bit in the physical format. That’s not great for my collection because I have games that I could. But I also am thinking with Wednesday that I might move back to doing shorter highlights of some campaign games. So play two or three sessions of something to show it off. That sounds less daunting than a whole campaign streamed. And if I love something I might go all in.

But that is still going to be interspersed with other games. And it won’t happen until after I finish up going through all of my different Button Shy Games. And I have another solo one from Button Shy coming with Aqua Rove, though, that won’t likely be too different from the other ROVE game that I just played on Malts and Meeples.

Finally From Me on This Gloomhaven Change

I want to provide the best content that I can on Malts and Meeples. And I know right now that content isn’t going to be me setting up a game every Monday. So I need to do that is right for me, but also what is going to be right for the channel. And right now, I feel like I’m becoming kind of a Balatro and small solo games channel. I think it is going to be more fun to be a channel that is back to campaign gaming. And Gloomhaven digital is going to be a better way for me to do that.

I expect that eventually I will get back to more at the table. The idea of a campaign game on Wednesday, if I can find one that I can do easily, sounds great. And it might be something smaller like the Missions for X-Men Dice Throne which just came in. But let’s talk about the backlog of games that I’d love to get on the channel next week, because there is a big number of games that I want to play, and I won’t lie, it’s a bit daunting.

How To Play A Nice Cuppa

A Nice Cuppa is a solo only game about getting the steps of brewing tea in the right order. From picking your tea and mug, steeping it, and eventually sipping on it. The game has seven steps for brewing your tea. Of course, brewing tea, there might be some distractions, these are worry cards in the game. So you need to try and not let the worries get the best of you.

For each round you flip up a worry card. Each worry is going to give you a direction on how to move your steps of brewing tea. So while you want them to end up in order, you need to work with the movement rules that you are given. Each spot with a worry face up, you do that movement, and you must do them in order of left to right. Then you flip your tea brewing cards over to their their other side above worries. If that side that is up is a focused side, that worry goes away.

At the end of the game, you count the cards that you have in order. You find where you have your one card and count from there. You get two points per card that is focused and one per card that is unfocused. Then you lose a point for any worry that remains.

What Doesn’t Work

Honestly, I don’t have much for this section. This is a nice compact solo game in terms of what is does. I think that there is a level of luck in the game. But that’s kind of the point of the game. So for someone who wants maybe a puzzle that is always going to have an optimal solution, this is not going to be an ideal game for them. It is a puzzle, but it’s a very adaptive puzzle as you need to figure out how to order and position the cards.

What Works

First off, I like how compact the game is. I have had a problem with some Button Shy Games, well one in particular, Sprawlopolis, where it is a small game with only a few cards, but it takes up space. While A Nice Cuppa isn’t the smallest in terms of footprint, games that Button Shy makes, it is one that is easy to fit onto a table. I think I could even fit it onto a TV tray if I wanted as well.

I also like the adaptability it makes you play with. You need to think about how the cards are going to interact with each other. You see me puzzle through some of that and start to think about deeper strategies on yesterdays stream. Like how do I set-up cards for next turn maybe by swapping cards versus always just putting stuff in order. Because, depending on what rules are out there, being in order might not be helpful to you.

It is nice that A Nice Cuppa has more worries than just seven as well. That means that there is less predictability but more replayability. I don’t know what is going to show up when I flip a card. And it might be a swap or movement that I need. Or it might mess everything up. That means that I need to adaptable as I play, which is something I enjoy in a game. I don’t want to always play with the same strategy.

Who Is A Nice Cuppa For?

I think that a lot of Button Shy fans are going to enjoy the game. I compared it to both Numbsters and Fishing Lesson in terms of some of what it does. How do you create rules that are going to work to get stuff in order. If you or someone you know enjoys that type of game, A Nice Cuppa is going to be another one of those games. And I think I like it better than Fishing Lessons. But as I think about it with Numbsters, they do enough different that there is likely room for both in a collection.

Is A Nice Cuppa My Cup of Tea?

I like A Nice Cuppa quite well. I like how small it is, and I appreciate how quick it is to get to the table and how quick it is to play the game. It’s a great puzzle that makes you think on your feet. And I feel like the more I play it, the more strategies that I’ll have with it. Will they work out always, certainly not. And sometimes, like my last game, you’ll just get something that ruins it for you. But I enjoy coming up with a good way to handle the puzzle of the game.

Star Wars Unlimited Quality Issues

I knew going into this set, though after I’d ordered my boxes, that there were quality issues with the set. Man vs Meeple did a play of the starter decks, droids vs clones, and the cards were miscut. I believe that it was more of a centering issue with that.

But this is really bad. I was talking about it with my wife last night. And the idea that something like this could happen made sense for her, it’s a mass production. But for me, it’s about the quality control and quality assurances that surprise me about it. Especially for a product that is doing well like Star Wars Unlimited.

I play Magic. And I buy some Pokemon cards and One Piece cards. Throughout my history of buying cards, I think I bought 20,000 cards or so. Figure about 13 cards a pack and well, that’s a lot of packs that I opened. I’ve never seen anything like this from any of them. And in fairness to Fantasy Flight, I own boxes from the previous two sets of Star Wars Unlimited. I found 0 issues with those. So it seems like someone wasn’t doing the job as well as they should have in terms of quality control for this set.

If you watch video #2, you hear me talk through an e-mail that I sent to Fantasy Flight on the issue. My hope is that they send me a replacement for that card or refund me the cost of the cards that I got damaged. I fully expect it won’t be the latter. So if they can compensate me with the showcase card, that is solid on their behalf. Plus I plan on selling the card to people who might be interested in collecting weird cards.

40. Cthulhu: Death May Die

Cthulhu: Death May Die is one of those great beer and pretzels games. Meaning that it’s pretty straightforward but mainly just a fun time. Who doesn’t like sitting around chucking a handful of dice, hoping you don’t go insane, and probably dying to whatever great old one shows up. The game gives you some story as well, but the biggest story elements are when you get that amazing roll right before you go insane, or when you can’t quite make it.

• The robots are on the run, can you sneak around and infiltrate the evil human corporations?

I love the theme on burncycle. There are games out there were the robots or something is taking over and the humans have to stop them. Here it’s the robots who are sneaking around and having to infiltrate. And I really enjoy how the system works. I like how you program out your actions and that chain of actions you can take degrades over time. So you need to balance changing it up to just wiping it. But if you wipe it, that pushes it closer to the corporation winning.

• Flick your disk and score in combo-tastic ways

This is a roll and write game where instead of rolling you are flicking disks around. That is a fun little twist on a standard roll and write. And then your sheet where you are filling things in, it’s combo city. You work in one area and you almost always are getting a bonus for another area. And as you get further into the game the more you can stack those bonuses and chain into more bonuses. Yes, this game has luck with the flicking and you might be knocked out of where you want to be, but it’s good chaos and combo fun.

37. Comic Hunters

• Can you build out the most interesting and influential comic collection

Comic Hunters is a unique game in that it gives you a number of things to do, but it manages to use so many different ways of drafting. That is one of the coolest parts of the game, along with the fact that it’s all Marvel comic covers and characters. But you score for collecting different characters, a lot of a character, first appearances, first issues, epic fights or even more. And it’s a good game to teach as well because you teach how you get comics into your collection and then when each draft comes up you teach it then and only then.

36. Sushi Go Party!

• Draft the tastiest collection of sushi and other yummy foods to score points

Another drafting game, but Sushi Go Party just does standard drafting. And I like how it works in this one. The variety in the game isn’t from the drafting but how everything scores. Some things like dumplings want you to get as many as you can, or then there is tofu where you want two, no more. And in Sushi Go Party you can really change up the different combinations of foods so that the drafting experience is different each round.

35. Trek 12: Himalaya

• Climb mountains as you create sets and runs of numbers in different ways

This game might feel like a pretty standard roll and write game. The idea of creating a set or a run based off of what is rolled, that isn’t that odd. But how you get to your numbers is where the fun puzzle of the game comes in. You might add the numbers together on both dice, you might pick the lower number, etc. But you only pick each of those ways to get the number a limited number of times. So you need to be smart how you manipulate the dice and build out your mountain.

34. Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game

• Fight as zombies and take a bite of Marvels biggest heroes.

Based on a comic run, Marvel Zombies has you play as the zombie heroes who have been turned. You try and complete objectives before SHIELD and the other heroes can take you out. Or you can flip the table and play as heroes against zombies, the choice is yours. This is another great beer and pretzels game. You ride that edge of trying to push your hunger up so you can roll more dice, but not get too hungry so that you become a mindless zombie for a little bit just caring about getting brains.

33. The Isle of Cats: Explore and Draw

• Can you rescue the most cats and score the most points in this roll and write style game?

This is the better version of Isle of Cats. I enjoy Isle of Cats and I know there is a duel version coming out which might make it better again. But the Explore and draw version is just so much fun. I especially enjoy the method in which you fill out your boat. There are columns of cards, some with more cats and some with more scoring objectives. You decide which column to use, but if you take too many cats, sure you get some points, but you miss on the scoring bonuses. If you just grab scoring, well, not enough cats and you won’t score enough points. It’s an easy roll and write to learn with fun complexity.

32. Sleeping Gods

• Explore a mysterious new lands, find totems and try and wake the gods.

This is an amazing sandbox game of exploring a huge world, finding out the mysteries of the world, all while trying to find totems and get back to your own world. I love how this game gives you a whole crew to play with, but each crew member is part of the ship moving around. So there are unique things people can do, but you decide and build out so much of that. And the artwork and story are just great for this game. I want to play the sequel and the small version soon as well.

31. The Great Split

• Divide up riches and try and end the game with the best collection

I Split – You Choose is a mechanism I didn’t know that I’d love so much as I do. And The Great Split is just an I Split – You Choose game. You get a hand of cards that have different things like books, artwork, money, and you need to decide how to split them up. You split them into two and then you pass it to the person on your left. They pick one of the two sides and you get the other. You do the same thing with the cards you just got passed. Then you just collect, try and get contracts, and push up the tracks the best that you can. It’s a simple but very fun.

50. Via Magica

This is a great filler level game. It’s a ton of fun to collect materials and use them to open gates. And then try and figure out what games and what elements you want to focus on opening first to get benefits from either immediately or throughout the game. As as well you need to grab points, so it’s a fun balancing act in what you’re doing. This is not going to be for everyone as it’s a light game, but I really like Via Magica for a nice relaxing and fun time.

This is a fun short campaign style game. It’s not a big story game, but you get that mechanical feeling of leveling up in Too Many Bones that makes it such a fun time. And each Gearlock is unique and plays differently. I think that is part of what makes the same so special. Each characters want to level up in their own ways. And sometimes you just want better stats. But other times, getting and using your unique dice is going to create for some really fun game moments. The game isn’t a story game, but it can provide it’s own story.

48. Ganz Schon Clever (That’s Pretty Clever)

• Place dice, fill in spots, and gain combos to get your highest score

I’ve already talked about this system two other times. But this is the original one to use the system and it’s my favorite of them. I really like how clean the puzzle is for trying to solve this game and do best at it. And there are enough combos that you can end up with some awesome turns. But the combos don’t slow down the game too much which is one element that I can really appreciate about this design compared to others. Though the flexibility in how you play is a little bit more limited.

47. Dungeon Kart

• Rev your engine, take off, and mess with your opponents in this fast racing game

Dungeon Kart is obviously trying to be a Mario Kart style game. And I think it does a good job of it. I’ve played other games that offer some of that, but Dungeon Kart I really enjoy. It does a great job balancing catching up, slinging spells at your opponents and just a fun time. You get behind, no biggie, you get more and better spells. You’re in the lead, well, it’s your own fault you are there and you’re going to get blasted, but don’t worry, you can still catch-up again.

46. Super Mega Lucky Box

• Combo your way into a bingo victory

This is the second bingo like game on the list where something is drawn and all players use it. But this one is a flip and write game that is more bingo like than Via Magica and has you filling in a three by three grid. Of course as you fill in rows and columns you get bonuses that can give you more. And the game provides great offsetting of the luck of the slip with powers from lightning bolts. It’s just a really fun, easy to play and fast game.

45. Cartographers

• Draw your best map as you explore the lands in this flip and write game

The theme is only kind of there, but this is a great roll and write style of game. You flip over terrain and figure out how you want to place it out on your sheet. But beware monsters because your opponents get to decide where that’s going to go and it’s going to be the worst spot for you. Plus the game has fun scoring that rotates throughout the seasons so that one of the scoring elements in spring is going to be scored for winter as well.

44. Res Arcana

• Can you get your magical engine up and running faster than your opponents in this race to 10 points

I like how simple Res Arcana is, but how thinky it is as well. You need to really figure out how you want to leverage the cards that you have, or draft, in this game. And drafting really adds some strategy to it as you can try and figure out what your best cards are going to be how you can get them to turn out points. The game has this great build to it until suddenly you can get points and then the game just flies to the finish.

43. Railroad Ink Challenge

• Can you connect your routes better than your opponents can?

Another roll and write game, last one in this section. Railroad Ink Challenge is a great game of building out routes of both trains and roads and trying connect as many of them as you can together. Challenge adds in challenges that you can push for to score more points. But beware of leaving too many unconnected pieces, those can lead to your doom as they are negative points.

42. Rebel Princess

• It’s Hearts with Shenanigans, in the best way as you avoid proposals you really don’t want.

That’s really what Rebel Princess is, Hearts with shenanigans. But the shenanigans really do make this game. The princess powers are all game breaking in some way, and you want the ones everyone else have. And then the card that determines the special rule for the hand is great as it messes with everything. So you need to be quick to adjust how you are playing every time, and I think that’s great.

41. Rock Hard: 1977

• Live your best rockstar life as you go from garage band to playing stadiums in this worker placement game

This game is really about living that 1970’s classic rocker life as you build up your band, gain reputation, write more songs all in hopes of playing on the biggest stage. I love how the worker placement is split up over three different times, day, evening, and after hours. And it’s fun that you need to worry about your job, at least for a little bit, and pay your producer as you become more famous because of course, while they help you, they also hurt you. It’s just very thematic for a worker placement game and a theme that I like a lot.

• Friday at 9 PM central my wife and I are streaming a playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3. Join us for the adventure of Nina and Kaerok and see what choices we make.

Just a quick reminder on who we have in Baldur’s Gate 3:

Nina the Tiefling Bard who generally just wants a great story. But she wants to hear about them and not be taking part in them so much. But she has gumption to deal with what comes up.

Kaerok a stoic half elf (I believe) monk who generally is pretty straightforward but not mean in who he is.

Shadowheart is the character who has caught Nina’s eye so she’s paired up with Nina in the adventuring group.

Karlach the character who now Kaerok is going to be taking an interest in.

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Board Game Streaming Schedule

So just a quick reminder of the streaming schedule:

• Monday around 8-8:30 PM Central Time a small solo game, that’s the current plan. This is also when I mix in things like Balatro and Slay the Spire as well.
• Wednesday at 9 PM Central is going to be for my Top 100 Games (of all time) 2024 Edition right now. And I want to get back to campaign games, though TBD how that will be working or the day for sure. Might swap Monday and Wednesday streams when that happens.
• Friday at 9 PM Central my wife, Kristen, and I play Baldur’s Gate 3. So join us as we play a couple of hours each Friday night and tackle that big adventure.

60. Medium

• How well can you and a partner connect two seemingly separate words?

This is a really fun party game. You are just trying to match up with your partner (for the round) on two words. But can you both land of the same word? If not, now you need to use those two new words. But, of course, those two new words might have gotten you further apart. This game is one of those party games that has a lot of great highs to it as people land on the same word. And also a lot of moments of just fun as you think it’s impossible to connect the words.

59. Under Falling Skies

• Battle aliens and defeat the mothership before it lands.

I love this as a solo game. I really enjoy the complexity and thought process of needing to manage how to alien ships are descending. Yet you also need to push to research. So it’s a balancing act of trying to get what you need done, but also not stretching yourself too thin that the smaller vessels are making it into the city scape and pushing the end of the game along faster. So the whole thing is a giant puzzle and a very fun one at that.

58. Final Girl

• Be the final one standing in a horror film as you take on the roll of the Final Girl.

This is one that is perfect for the Halloween season so great for me to talk about it this week. It’s a solo only game where you are taking on a killer, a ghost, or whatever the story is as the final girl. The one who is standing at the end of the movie. And who knows if you will survive or not, but that is the fun challenge of the game. Plus the action system in the game is really good as you spend resources to succeed on checks, but also need those to replenish the cards and actions you can take.

57. Stonespine Architects

• Build out your best labyrinthian dungeon and show the you’re the best architect.

This is a really fun drafting and set collection game. And I think one of the elements that really stands out to me is how become unique in your scoring. You are able to stop buying stuff to grab a scoring card. And that scoring card is going to shape how you play the game, but you also don’t want to stop too early because you need to collect those tokens to bolster up how dangerous your dungeon really is. It’s a great balancing act and adds just a bit more choice to the game. Also this is a new one to my Top 100 Games list.

56. World Wonders

• Build out y our civilization and compete to complete wonders to make your lands the best.

I appreciate the ease of play. I say that knowing that World Wonders is not the simplest game to learn, but it is a game that as you get into it, to goes really fast. And I like the push your timing element of the game as well. I won’t call it push your luck, but you might be ready to build a wonder but have a lot of money to buy tiles left. Well, if you don’t build it now, someone else might snag it, but if you do, it might put you behind for the next round and the new wonders that come out. And I believe this is new, though maybe 2023, to my Top 100 Games.

• Become the best home brewer and win awards at Summerfest and Oktoberfest.

This is a great little engine building game that I really like. I like it for the theme, but also for the game play as I always have fun with it. In the game you brew beer to get better at brewing beer. And some of how you do that is you get new ingredients to work with and add to your recipes for IPAs, Porters and more. Those ingredients are going to help build out your engine and might get you more money, move your up on tracks, etc. At the end, though, most of it just comes down to who is the best at brewing beer.

54. Potion Explosion

• Combo marbles together to create the most and the greatest potions.

This is almost an app game as a board game. And I mean that in the best way possible. There are a number of app games where you remove a “thing” and try to get matching “things” to touch because of it. Here you remove a marble and you want to get like colored marbles to touch. Because that cascades together and then you get to take those marbles. If you play it right you can create a bit change to get the marbles you need to complete a lot of potions in one turn. And that puzzle is the fun of the game to leverage your potions to complete more.

53. Mansions of Madness

• Investigate mysteries of the elder gods in this app guided game in FFG’s Arkham line.

This game is one of the first really big games on the list. And there is a lot that I like about it. But it did use to be higher on my list. I think it’s dropped because I haven’t played it as recently, and because I’ve played more story driven games. This one, though dynamically adjusts the story and the world as you play through multiple times and that is a fun element. But the different scenarios and missions are all fun, and I enjoy that variety in the game.

52. Ohanami

• Create your best Zen garden to score you the most points.

The last two games on the list are small. This one is great though for me because it’s a chill game, for the most part, and easy to learn and play. You collect cards, drafting them two at a time. And then you add those cards to three columns. But you either need to add to the top, higher, or bottom, lower on the column. And things can never drop out of numerical order. Plus how the different color score, as you draft over three hands, makes the game even more of a puzzle. And there is a fourth color as well that can be huge, but you are giving up points elsewhere. Overall a really fun little filler game.

51. Vegetable Stock

• Published by Good Game Studio and Arcane Wonders in 2019 (and 2024 for Arcane Wonders)
• Collect vegetables and be able to sell them for the most at the end of the game.

This is a stock market vegetable drafting game, and I love the absurdity and double meaning of Vegetable Stock. This is another small game that is more of a filler than anything. But it’s a really fun filler as you draft over six rounds. Each round you draft from N+1 cards where N is the number of players. That last card is then used to adjust the stock market. So you need to be smart in what you draft. Draft too much of one veggie it’ll never move up, but if it moves up too much the market might just crash and make them worthless.
