Marvel Television Series

So we don’t know all of what is coming out. The fact that we have Ms Marvel, She Hulk, and Moon Knight all with footage, I think it’s safe to so we’ll be getting those series. Plus an animated Captain Carter series coming March. I’m assuming this is picking up with where What If left off. But since we haven’t heard anything, I’m guessing no live action before that, which means we have some time between shows.

The Lord of the Rings

This I think was on the list last year, and I’m still interested in it. I do not know what the show is going to be about or how it is going to go, but I think that it could be cool to see what they do with it. I know it’s going to be characters that are old and new, which I kind of just wish it was new. I know it’s not super related but the Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle Earth board game, I wish that had been only new characters. Don’t try and jam in more history. But I will watch this when it comes out.

The Witcher: Blood Origin

It’s a live action spin-off, I think there is an animated show as well. This one is going to be from before the events of the Witcher. I’m guessing it’ll deal some with the rise of the Witchers and that lore. I don’t know much else beyond that. But I really like the lore of The Witcher series and video games, and I still need to read the books. The fact that it’s a show runner who is tied to the main Witcher series. This also sounds like a one season show, just to explore some history, which could be good.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

So while I am looking forward to this show, it is a Star Wars character that we already know about. So I think it will be a lot of fun, but I don’t know what I need a show about him between everything. But then again, it could be cool. I’m more ready for more new Star Wars shows to come out. Book of Boba Fett even is more interesting and he’s a character I like less. But we know less about what became of him with Obi-Wan there is a clear spot he needs to end up, which makes it way less interesting.

Ahsoka (Star Wars Shows)

Another Star Wars show, and really I wanted to talk about Obi-Wan Kenobi separately because I had more to say on it. But any of the Star Wars shows, I’m going to watch. And Ahsoka was a fun character to see on the Mandalorian. I do want to see further away from the main Star Wars storyline as well. I still need to wrap up Visions but was really enjoying that thus far.

Halo

I don’t know how I’m going to watch this one this year, but it’s a big show. And while Halo isn’t a video game that I’ve played that much of, just a little bit of the first one in college, the lore and the world are interesting to me. I’m curious to see what they can do with it, because there was talk of a Halo movie, but a show based off of it is actually more interesting to me because it might be given a chance to grow and shine.

Supernatural Academy

If you read my Top 5 Television Shows and Top 5 Books, You’ll know that I like stories where it’s someone going to a supernatural academy. This looks like a young adult or middle grade fantasy book series that is being adapted as an animated show. Will it be good, who knows, but it is the type of show that I’m going to watch to checkout. And from what I can tell of the animation style, it looks good. Plus I get Peacock with my cable, might as well use it more.

Around the World in 80 Days

This is a classic Jules Verne novel, and while I won’t likely be watching this immediately when it comes out, I do want to watch it. Add in that it’s David Tennant who I really liked from Doctor Who, I’m more likely to watch it. I think this might be one that my wife, Kristen, will be even more excited about. It’s coming to BBC One/PBS, so it might be one of those that I need it come to streaming so I can watch it.

Stranger Things Season 4

Hopper has been in Russia for a long time, so long he even became the Red Guardian, oh, wait, didn’t world. But I’m excited to see what happens next. I won’t lie, I think this maybe should be the last season of Stranger Things, or maybe one more to wrap up loose ends. The kids are getting older and the show feels like it’s best when you have younger kids, older, and adults. Though maybe a new generation is brought it, but we’ll have to see. I’m still really excited to see what happens.

That’s my full list, and honestly, that’s a very full list. Plus I have shows to catch up on like Locke & Key which I’m still going through season two and might have season 3 coming out next year. Arcane is one that I want to watch and let’s not even start talking about anime because, well, I’ll be doing that soon.

But we all know about all of those things, sometimes it’s just tricky to remember.

Instead, I want to look back on 2020 thus far, and call out things that I have been thankful for in the nerdy realm.

I’m thankful for finishing Gloomhaven. It took a while, but we got through all of Gloomhaven, and as much as I love that game, and as much as it’s not terrible on Table Top Simulator, I was glad to play the last few sessions in person, outside, and wrap up that game. I’ll miss playing it, but next year I will have Frosthaven eating up space on my shelf as well to play.

I’m thankful for the virtual game nights that I’ve had. I’ve done a few with different groups of people Yes, it isn’t the same as in person, but I’ve made a lot of games work via video. Ganz Schon Clever, Criss Cross, Scattergories, Cross Clues, Just One, Hues and Cues, and I’m probably missing one or two. And beyond that we’ve played Jack Box Games as well which works nicely via Zoom. We had a few months with moving where we didn’t game, but overall it has been good to do that.

Starting Tainted Grail. Tainted Grail is not a game that should work that well via Zoom. However, we made it work, getting a few rules wrong in Chapter 1, and with a slight change on my end, I think it’ll be even better for us. I’ve been wanting to play this game in a group as it was good solo, but I love sharing an interesting story with people.

I’m thankful that I got to do a few games with the virtual GenCon. Probably my biggest disappoint was not being able to go to GenCon in terms of nerdy things this year. As an extrovert that was just so incredibly fun last year. I didn’t do a full slate of things like I would have had I been going in person, but I got three games in, which was a lot of fun. I got to play Night Cage, which I was backed on Kickstarter at the time, Fruit Picking, and The Librarians, which I almost backed because of playing it on Kickstarter. It was different, but I did have fun getting to play those games and be a part of the community that way.

I’m also thankful for the Mandalorian. We haven’t gotten much in the way of nerdy things on television or in the theaters this year. We will have nothing from Marvel and DC, honestly, I just kind of ignore at this point. But we did get Season 2 of the Mandalorian which is still just as good as the first season. It’s nice having that Friday evening fun back again.

All Systems Go is another thing that I’m thankful for. It’s a little local game shop that I get my Marvel Champions stuff from and where I trade in games. It’s been nice to be able to swing in there, look at their trades and chat for a few minutes once a month or so when I pick up the next hero or villain pack for Marvel Champions. And they delivered when businesses were shut down in Minnesota this spring into early summer. So even though I might not be playing quite as many games, I still have a steady supply of them.

I am thankful for GloryHoundd YouTube channel and community. I don’t watch many live YouTube videos, but every Friday at work, I join to watch their Kickstarter stream and it’s been a blast interacting with GloryHoundd and DrGloryHogg there and on their Discord and with the other people who are showing up to watch as well. It’s been a really nice way to have community even without being able to get around people.

Finally, I’m thankful that I was able to get a D&D game going via Zoom. I hadn’t been running a D&D game for a bit, and there was a chance I was going to play in one, but with Covid, that game didn’t happen. So instead I took up running a game and I’ve been a lot of fun, I have a lot of Friday Night D&D written about it the Tower of the Gods game, if you want to catch up with where I’m at. But D&D works well via video, sometimes we talk over each other, but I’ll try and get back to someone if that happens, and it’s a good time that I’m very thankful for and thankful to have friends to play with.

This review is going to contain spoilers, though, Disney hasn’t tried that hard not to spoil things. So the big reveal, you probably already know about. The rest of the stuff will be discussing the plot for the show, so definitely going to be spoilers in that, but I think compared to some shows, Game of Thrones, spoilers don’t matter as much for the Mandalorian, and I’ll talk about why I think that as well.

So, what’s the plot of the Mandalorian?

We meet in the first episode a Mandalorian bounty hunter, simply referred to as Mando. He’s good at his job as a bounty hunter, but he gets an off the book job from a former empire man to bring in an asset, which happens to be a baby, a 50 year old baby. The same species as Yoda, but that species doesn’t have a name, so hence forth he’ll just be known as Baby Yoda. Mando gets some help retrieving the asset, and he brings him back to the empire man (this takes place after episode 6 of the Skywalker Saga) and into the hands of a cloner. However, he doesn’t feel good about it and ends up stealing him back. He then has to go on the run with Baby Yoda and comes across parts of his old life as well as a former Rebel shock trooper. When bounty hunters are still coming after him and Baby Yoda, he ends up having to go back at finish what he started, taking out the stormtroopers, but there are more now, and things go sideways. Getting help from the friends he’s made along the way, they manage to escape with Baby Yoda and the bounty has been taken care of, but things aren’t good as we see the new big bad guy has survived his TIE Fighter crash.

This show is actually pretty easy to summarize because the plot isn’t that complex. Where the show shines is how it can create great episodes that are a lot of filler but still turn them into something interesting. Now, I’m sure not everyone will think that, but when we meet Cara Dune, the former Rebel Shock Trooper, it’s a filler episode. So, there are a few things that are important during those episodes, but nothing that is extremely important. They are just very thematically nice and they have a very space western feel to them. In fact, the whole series relies heavily on the space western feel and it does it really well. It feels very Star Wars, and it manages to do that without invoking any of the recognizable characters. Sure, there is an IG unit and a few things we’ve seen before, but nobody major. There isn’t a CGI Luke in the background of some scene, so there is one episode where they end up in the Cantina on Tatooine.

Besides that very Star Wars feel to the show, they do a good job with the characters as well. Mando, Pedro Pascal, does a great job in the lead. He’s meant to be more a focused character and they do a good job of him having his code. The supporting characters, in particular IG-11, Greef Karga, and Cara Dune are all well done. I haven’t always been a huge fan of Gina Carano as an actress, I thought she was okay in Deadpool, but in this show, she does a good job as Cara Dune. Carl Weathers as Greef Karga, the head of the local bounty hunters, does a good job, and he just carries himself in a way that you can understand his history. But really the show is about two characters, Mando and Baby Yoda. And Baby Yoda, just as a puppet and CGI character is done really well. You can feel that Baby Yoda is a puppet at times in a good way, because the other characters interact with them better.

Now, I did say that I was going to talk briefly why I don’t think spoilers are a massive Mandalorian concern. Mainly it’s because the plot is pretty simple. There is a big reveal at the end of episode one when he finds out that his bounty that he’s bringing in is Baby Yoda, but beyond that, the show doesn’t take massive risks in the plot. That isn’t a bad thing though because they really focus on the quality of each episode, and it is very high. Also, because the episodes are so short, they can even more focus down on the quality. That was a complaint that I’ve heard from some, that the episodes were too short, but I like it for binging (which I didn’t do), but I also like it because it allowed them to really focus the story. Even the filler episodes didn’t try and do too much and just told a good focused story.

For me, was there anything wrong with the show? I don’t think that there was. Like I’ve been talking about, I think the plot is focused enough, the storytelling is tightly done. I can see why people would want longer episodes, because how well the aesthetic and storytelling are handled, but I feel like some of what makes the Mandalorian work could have been lost if it had been changed into a slightly longer format. Maybe they could have tied in the filler episodes better, but I really liked those episodes and a couple of them were up there for being my favorite episodes of the show.

So, I think the final thing to talk about is the future of the show. When the last episode was released, it was announced that there would be a 2nd Season coming this year. I’m definitely looking forward to that very much, so what sort of storylines might we be looking at? We definitely haven’t seen the last of the new big bad, Moff Gideon and his dark saber. I also think that Mando has been given the task of finding where Baby Yoda belongs, so which of those two things is going to be focus. I suspect it might be more Baby Yoda focused again with Moff Gideon harassing them, and then if/when there is a third season, that is more Moff Gideon focused. But that’s just 100% speculation on my behalf. I think that makes the more interesting story instead of stretching out a more direct confrontation with Moff Gideon who seems like a big bad who they want to keep around for a while, and just have hims survive multiple times.

Those are my thoughts on The Mandalorian. I really liked the show and I think that it’s up there with the original trilogy in terms of Star Wars material. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Did you like it? Did you have any major issues with it? What stood out to you about it?
