It’s back into space on Malts and Meeples as I play the next, and last, scenarios in the prologue. How will this space combat go? Will I survive or will things go sideways quickly. Join me over on YouTube and see how the game play went, and help me know if I should continue with the campaign of Stars of Akarios or move onto another one, like Oathsworn, Midarra, or another campaign game?

The Game – Stars of Akarios

This isn’t going to be a full review, but now that I’ve played a number of times, mainly in the tactical space combat, which seems to be most of the game. What do I think about it? I want to play at least one more planet and space exploration before I really give a full review on it.

But thus far, I have been enjoying the game. The writing in the game, the adventures I’ve been on thus far, it reminds me of space TV shows like Farscape or Stargate SG1. Is it the best writing, nope, but is it a lot of fun, for sure. I talked about it before, how Stars of Akarios nicely borrows story, not steals it, for the game.

I also think that the space combat works well. In terms of a game, it feels like it could stand alone and be it’s own game if it needed to be. I like it with the other things, the space exploration doesn’t feel like too much, but the planets add to the story, from what I saw. But I really like trying to figure out the puzzle of the space combat. It is such a good tactical experience. I know the Dice Tower did a review and they said the AI isn’t the smartest, that’s true, but I don’t find it an issue. I generally just pick the AI doing what’s worse for me.

And I think the biggest thing for me with it is that I want to continue playing the game. When a big game keeps me hooked after 5 plays now, so about 5-7 hours of game play. That’s a good sign. The only thing that’s keeping me from pushing on further is that I have other campaign games to try. But Stars of Akarios is one that I recommend if you are looking for that big space epic game with really good space combat.

Upcoming Streams

Monday the plan is to tackle another roll and write game. I believe it’s going to be Long Shot the Dice Game, though that one might get played over the weekend. If it does, then it’ll likely be a different solo game, Dinosaur Rawr ‘n Write being the most likely one. Though that’s a bigger one and I’d need to find the time to learn the rules. Hadrian’s Wall could also be an option, or Black Sonata or Coffee Roaster.

As for next Wednesday that’s the question. I know that Oathsworn is coming back to Kickstarter sometime, so I’d like to show that one off. But it’s even more heavy into the story so there is a great risk there that you’ll be spoiled. Plus it’s another big game to learn. Or I could continue with Stars of Akarios, but if I push forward with it, it’s a massive game, so it’d be what gets played for a long time. I think next Wednesday I’m probably going to change it up, play a different game, but leave Stars of Akarios set-up. Take that week off, and then probably come back to it. But let me know if you want more Stars of Akarios?

What Board Game Themes Do I Want? https://nerdologists.com/2022/01/what-board-game-themes-do-i-want/ https://nerdologists.com/2022/01/what-board-game-themes-do-i-want/#respond Wed, 19 Jan 2022 15:42:10 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=6594 A board game without a theme is not that interesting to me. But we see so many board games out there with the same themes. What is a good new theme?

The post What Board Game Themes Do I Want? first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Board games, like basically everything else, get stuck in ruts when it comes to themes. Do you remember when everything was the next Harry Potter, Hunger Games, or Game of Thrones, granted the last one is still going on? Well, it is that way in board games as well. Everything has been the next zombie game, the next Cthulhu or Lovecraftian game, now everything is pirates and Marvel.I just want a new board game theme.

Now, I won’t complain too much about some of those themes. I like the Cthulhu or Lovecraftian stuff that Fantasy Flight Games does. Marvel, I’m clearly a big Marvel fan as you can see from here and here. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t other themes or really IP’s that I’d like to see games put it, or more games coming from.

The Dresden Files

This one does already have a game. And it has a game that I like. I think that The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game is good. But the theme is something that the players bring to the game. The game does remind you about what the story you’re playing through is, but if you don’t know the story, the cards won’t help that much. I want something that tells more of the Dresden Files story.

What Would I Want?

I don’t know that I want this to be a dungeon crawl type of game. I feel like it would work for Dresden, but not be as interesting. Plus, there are other themes that I’d want a dungeon crawler. What I would love is to see a Detective: A Modern Board Game style Dresden Files game. Dresden is always puzzling out mysteries. And we already have books of short stories that are other cases he’s done. It would work well for creating new cases, and it could be a massive case tied together over 5 smaller cases.

And then you could have Harry, Murphy, and some of the other characters as the ones who give you things to activate. And using magic in the game would be interesting and different. There definitely needs to be some sort of combat mechanic which base Detective really doesn’t have, but it is something that could easily be added. But for a lot of it, and a lot of what Harry does is investigate and get punched.

Sword Art Online

Another one that technically has a board game. But it is a small game from Japanime Games that needs the rule book to be updated or just fixed. And the game gives you a tiny bit of the SAO theme. You play as the main characters, and you can switch, but that is it.

For those of you not familiar with Sword Art Online, it is an anime where the characters get trapped in a video game. If you die in the video game, you die in real life. And the only way to escape is to beat the game by climbing to the top of the tower/levels and beating the final boss. There are more seasons as well with different things, but that’s a good starting point for knowledge.

What Would I Want?

I’d want a boss battling game. Something along the lines of Primal, Kingdom Death Monster, or Townsfolk Tussle. Really, mostly along the lines of Kingdom Death Monster. If you put that theme on KDM, I’d be paying $700 to get everything for it.

Kingdom Death Monster is a boss battling game, but it also has you building up your tribe/colony, adding armor, weapons, and more. That would work well for an RPG style video game which is what Sword Art Online is. While everything you’d be doing is working towards the next boss battle, what you do outside of that matters as well. And the depth of story and world in SAO, side quests that might appear as boss battles, all of those are good. I think that you could really create a good game for SAO in that style.

Tomb Raider

Yes, another one with a board game already. Though, I should say, a board game I think. I forget what happened with it, I demoed it at GenCon in 2019, and I was severely disappointed. And there are a few others a well, but none that have made waves in board gaming. And Tom Raider is a very cool theme. Especially when you think about the newer video games.

What Would I Want?

I think I’d want this to be done in the style of 7th Continent or maybe more like 7th Citadel. I could have said Detective as well, because it is a mystery most of the time. But I think that treasure hunting, getting dropped on an island that you don’t know what is going on. Or going to that bigger set piece area, that is cool.

7th Citadel adds in more story. And I could see that working really well, because you get that exploration, but you could make it feel like a bigger story. In fact, you could drop all the base cards for health, some skills, and some characters. Then you could add in other packs to add in more stories, new treasures to hunt. Almost make it a combination of 7th Citadel and TIME Stories. But actually pay off on a big story.

Locke & Key

Maybe all of these will have a board game done on them, because Locke & Key does. But this is another one that the game looks lacking and too abstracted. Locke & Key is a horror series where there are magical keys. These keys can do all sorts of crazy things, and the Locke family is the protector of the keys. But there are almost Lovecraftian type creatures from beyond, that want to get their hands on the keys and take over.

What Would I Want?

I think I’d want a one versus all game. Maybe even with an element of questioning if someone one is infected or not. So it could end up being a Battlestar Galactica type of game or Unfathomable with hidden traitors. Like, who has been infected by the other world. But I also think it could maybe work better as a one versus all game.

But let’s break it down more so, I think we have one person who is playing an infected villain. Someone under the control of the other world. And then they are trying to get the keys from the Locke family, since they can’t just take them. And at times the Locke’s will need to figure out how to banish them and go to the Omega door, which seals away the other worldly creatures. They need to open the door to get more material to make a new key, but there is a chance someone else can be hit. And if they are hit, then they become other worldly.

Of course, it might not be obvious if they are hit. So every time you do that, you risk getting someone else infected. And if someone else is infected, they start working with the group still, but being less optimal. How do you hide it, when do you switch sides and just start working obviously for the bad guy. It’s more about trying to stop each other versus kill them.

Disenchantment

Disenchantment

I know this one doesn’t have a game. And honestly, it is so weird, it might not work all that well. Disenchantment is about a princess who has some lousy friends who go on adventures in all sorts of weird places. And then eventually people want to kill them, everyone wants to kill them. It’s a lighter story, and a completely weird world.

What Would I Do?

This, to me is a great one for a dungeon crawler. They end up in a world of gnomes, elves, castles, hell, other castles, and more. They really get pulled around everywhere. Give it a nice world map and see where all you end up, how you can make it through challenges, and if the monsters will kill you. Or your own mother, or really anyone will kill you.

And because you can go to hell, and they do in the show, I think that’d be a fun way to keep a dungeon crawler moving forward. If you die, it isn’t the end, you just need to get back out of hell. Maybe make a hell book of scenarios. Then every time that you die you play through another one of those. It could be determined by where, or how you die, but it could also just be done randomly. And if you die too many times you eventually get stuck.

Keeper of the Lost Cities

I did just write about this. So if you want to know a bit about the series, you can find that here. But the basic idea is that a girl is plucked from her not so normal human life. She finds out that she is really an elf, she gets into elf school. She makes friends, and yes this sounds like Harry Potter, but the world is better and more interesting. And the magic, each elf has a different skill or could have a different skill. And the world is in unrest and their are secret organizations trying to mess with the status quo.

Keeper of the Lost Cities

What Would I Want?

This is tough, mainly because I don’t want to repeat too much of what I’ve already done. And this is a really cool world to play in. Firstly, I would want character creation for this game, or at least some ability to pick. Maybe something like Midarra which is very story heavy and you can build out characters however you want.

The elves unlock their powers, but they also have skills that they all can do. It just depends on how well they train themselves. So really setting up stats in different ways and then picking what power you want from being an empath to mind reading or inflicting emotions on someone else. Plus so many more.

I think this would kind of ben another dungeon crawl type of game. Maybe a bit like something like Arydia which isn’t out yet and I might late back, possibly. The concept of Arydia is that you dig deeper. You spend time at the world map level, you make story decisions, and then you get down to a narrower focus.

What Theme Would You Want?

Do you feel that there are some that need more love? I could probably spend time and come up with more. Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson is getting another one, otherwise it’d be on my list. The Call to Adventure version is cool, but there is so much that could be done in that world. And there are plenty of IP’s that could be treated better. I’m going to call out Japanime a little bit here, I think that they often put out okay games with a big IP. I’d love to see some of their anime IP’s get a better developed game.

Let me know which of my ideas sounds the coolest. And let me know what you want to see a game made about that doesn’t get enough love.

Can you defeat or sneak past vampires to complete your objectives in Ancient Blood – Order of the Vampire Hunters a story-driven cooperative game with standalone and campaign game play from Dark Gate Games?

Pros

  • Solo Play
  • Aesthetic
  • Dungeon Crawl
  • Campaign/Standalone

Cons

  • Campaign/Standalone
  • Price Point
  • Early Bird

The Page

I like Gamefound pages because it makes it so much easier to navigate. And you can see everything all at once in terms of navigation. But that really isn’t the point of talking about the page. But I will say that the rules section is good and because I can navigate directly to there I don’t mind that it’s later on the page. Also if you want to see the miniatures you can see them as well and they are fairly grotesque.

The Game

The game play looks interesting with elements of choose your own adventure and dungeon crawl and boss fights in it. I watched the BoardGameCo video on it which tells a whole lot more about how the game plays:

It is tricky to talk about because, like he said, the information on how the campaign plays is limited in his video. And it’s fairly limited on the the page as well. This isn’t all that odd for games because you don’t want to spoil the story. But it also feels like I’m just getting general details on how the campaign will work and not details. Even for the game play it feels a little bit light as to how the game actually works.

That said, I do like the fact that there are morning and night time phases of the game. And as expected, vampires don’t like the sun. Also as expected, they are dangerous at the night. Alex from BoardGameCo talks about how he lured a group of six vampires into a room, busted open the window and dusted all of them.

But that does lead to another question/concern for me. Some cooperative games with a solo mode have what is called true solo. That means you can play it controlling a single character to play the game. This doesn’t appear to be the case. This looks like you either have specific numbers of characters that need to go into a scenario or you need to play four. Now, in the video that didn’t seem to be a problem for Alex, but will it be for me. I think it’s something worth noting that might trip some people up.

Back or Brick

So is this game a back or a brick? I really want to back it, but for me it’s a Brick. With that said, it’s more the time of the year and finances that are keeping it from being a back. The game play sounds very interesting and vampire hunting as a concept for a game I really like. But even if finances were readily available for this Gamefound Crowdfunding Campaign, I’m not sure I’d back it.

Why, because I have a lot of campaign board games. I have beat three of them, Gloomhaven, Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon, and Sword & Sorcery. I have games like Etherfields, ISS Vanguard, Isofarian Guard, Oathsworn, and let’s not forget about Frosthaven coming in. And I have games like Solomon Kane, HexploreIt, Midarra, and more on my shelf too play. What about this game stands out over the others I want to play? For me it’s mainly the theme, which might not be enough.

Plus, the price, which I didn’t talk about but I put as a con, is a little bit higher. I think that the Slayer Pledge is a solid value, but the Hunter Pledge seems a little bit steep. This is a campaign that I’d want to see what all gets unlocked before I back it. Because just with what there is now, or what there was at the start, it seems a bit light compared to an Awaken Realms, Mythic Games, or CMON project.

How about for you, is this a back or a brick?

The post How Many Board Games Do You Need Of Each Type? first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
This is coming up for me right now as I am currently backing Agemonia, and I have a lot more games coming. How many campaign, story driven, potentially solo board games do I need? But to go with that, how many do you need of any type of game.

This also comes from DrGloryHoundd talking about the same thing when they, him and GloryHoundd, think about backing Kickstarter games. The question he asks quite often is when backing a game will it replace a like game on their shelf. They have their go to worker placement game(s). If the back another worker placement game, it needs to be better than the previous ones to stay on their shelf. But let’s get to the main question before we dive into some reasoning for adding or not.

How Many Board Games Do You Need Of Each Type?

This isn’t a number that anyone can really say. Now, that’s a cop out answer in some ways, but I think it comes down to the gamer. Lets say that someone only plays party games, they might want to have 20-30 different party games so they can have a big rotation. And that person only needs party games because they only play party games.

I, on the other hand, do not need that many party games. This is for two reasons, firstly, I don’t only play party games. I play all sorts of games and that means that I will buy and want a more diverse game collection. Secondly, since I don’t play only party games, that means that I don’t burn through the content on party games nearly as fast. So I don’t need all the content.

This is really true with how I game in basically any type of game. I don’t need a ton in any particular type because I play most types. That means that unless I really love a game, it’s going to take a longer time for me to fully explore it. But that’s getting beside the point, let’s talk about some of the reasons to or not to get some games.

Why Get More Or Not?

There are a number of reasons to get more in a type of game or not. Let’s start with the one thing to consider that I’ve already really touched on.

Is There A Spot on The Shelf Next To Other Similar Games?

This is the question that DrGloryHogg is always asking. And I think for a lot of types of games, this is something to strongly consider. Especially if you have a big game collection. My game collection is sitting at just over 400 with what I own for base games and expansions. That’s a lot of games, so I need to ask myself, if I get another deck building game will I play it over on Aeon’s End, Xenoshyft: Onslaught, Ascension, or Clank?

But not only if I’ll play it over them, but will it make it into the rotation. Does it do something that sets it apart so even if I keep and play all the others that I’d be playing this new deck building game? Which actually leads into the next question.

Does It Do Anything Different?

So you think that there might be a spot on the shelf for it. Not that it’d bump out a different game, but that it can get added. Why is that? Does the game just fit into that niche that you love so much, or, does it do something different?

I think when consider what game to buy if a game does something different or unique to what you’ve done before, that means that there might be room. If it’s just more the same type of game that you already have, then you have to ask will it replace the old favorites.

But let’s look at deck building again. Lost Ruins of Arnak has deck building in it. I bought it because Lost Ruins of Arnak is a worker placement and deck building game. I mention that I have Ascension, that’s just pure deck building, Clank is deck building and push your luck, Xenoshyft: Onslaught is deck building tower defense, and Aeon’s End is deck building, tower defense, and a boss battler.

Do You Need More Of Your Favorite Type Of Game?

I think one thing to consider is how much you like the type of game. I don’t need that many worker placement games in my collection. There’s a simple reason for that, I don’t pull them off the shelf because I don’t gravitate towards that type of game. I want a game with narrative and more high moments, in my opinion. Now, I don’t hate worker placement euro games, I am just never going to gravitate towards them. So I have a few that I like in my collection and it’d take something special, or the theme of beer, to get added to my collection.

On the flip side, I really love story driven and adventure games. That is why I am debating about Agemonia now. With games like 7th Continent, Midarra, Gloomhaven, Clank Legacy, Betrayal Legacy, Forgotten Waters, and more already in my collection, do I need another game with a lot of story? Add in the fact that I have Oathsworn, Frosthaven, ISS Vanguard, Etherfields, Isofarian Guard, and again even more, do I need another adventure game? This is really where I start considering differences as I mention above.

Can You Get It Later?

This one is fairly different but also an important consideration. Can you get the game later? This is something I talk about fairly often with crowdfunding games. And I won’t dive into all the details on it because, while, there are a lot and that is it’s own article. I talk about most of the points in my article on whether or not to late back a game which you can find here. But even for retail games it does matter.

Why, because over time games generally go down in price. I say generally because when a game gets extremely popular it can be more expensive on the second hand market. Everything for Battlestar Galactica costs $600+. Spire’s End was going for $150 for a $50 game. There are obviously exceptions but for most games you can get them water. So for a retail game, consider if you want/need to play it now. Or can you wait until you’ve played another game of it’s type enough times that you are done with it and then you replace it.

Final Thoughts

Like I said towards the beginning, there is no right number. But I think that it is something to be mindful about when purchasing a game. I keep on going back to how DrGloryHogg talks about it. Will it replace something already on my shelf. Because I might have room for more board games but how many do I have room for?

I think most hobby board gamers would be perfectly fine keeping every game we ever bought. Why, because there is an element of collecting that goes on as well. But we don’t, generally, have that room. And we don’t generally have that money. When I do a point of order/sale article it isn’t always because I’m 100% done with a game, it’s that I want to try something new.

How do you decide if you need to get another board game?

The post 2021 Board Games – What I’m Waiting For from Kickstarter first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
So I started this last year, and you can see what I wrote here. It was kind of a mish-mash of everything thrown together, I’m doing that again this time but I’m going to split it out into three areas. First are games that I kickstarted in 2020 or before that should be coming out in 2021, then games that I am hoping to kickstarter in 2021, finally are other games that I’ve found on BGG that I don’t know that much about but look interesting for 2021. This one is just going to cover Kickstarter.

What Coming In The Mail

These are the games that I’ve kickstarted which should be getting delivered in 2021.

Etherfields

Technically a 2020 game, it is getting delivered now to backers, but I picked 1 wave shipping, which I’m fine with, because I have more than enough big games to get through, but this one for me will be coming in 2021. I am excited to dive into the dream world and see everything that Awaken Realms has to offer as I’ve really liked their other games that I’ve played, Lords of Hellas and Tainted Grail.

Frosthaven

This was targeted for a 2021 March release but is now probably mid 2021, which I’m fine with. My game group who would probably just jump into this once we wrap up our current game at that point in time is playing Tainted Grail now and hopefully we can do Apocrypha some as well before Frosthaven gets here. But I’m still really excited for it, for the new classes and the city building aspect of it.

Oathsworn: into the Deepwood

This Kickstarter had a target date of December 2020, which I knew was not going to close to being hit as this is a big game and it’s the first game for the company, I’m still stoked for this one and I’ve borrowed a few concepts for my own game design, though mine is different, with this game being split into two parts, an exploration/mystery part as you find your way to the boss monster and then fight that boss. I like the legacy, but not legacy feel to it with how the boss monsters are revealed but nothing is destroyed so you’d just know the boss monster when you play it again.

Hel: The Last Saga

This has a targeted date for 2021, and while I think that Mythic Games can probably hit that, I wouldn’t be shocked if this got pushed into 2022. I backed this one for a Viking campaign game with a theme that is dark but interesting. I liked the religion piece of it too how some characters can only pray to one god or another because of their background, but then some can pray to all of them to get their blessing. This seems like a good grim dark Viking game.

ISS Vanguard

Should be coming at the tail end of 2021, I think, though they are targeted earlier than that, This is something, depending on how much it’s been playtested before, that probably will have a slight delay to it, though Awaken Realms is pretty good with it. I like this one for the epic space nature of it and the less linear story that it tells.

Roll Player Adventures

This one was a late back for me, but I just like the Roll Player stuff well enough that I knew I’d want this lighter campaign game. Playing it at GenCon in 2019 was a blast and the size of the story just seems like a lot of fun. I like that it looks like it’s a few smaller stories that play through a few different scenarios and can be turned into an epic campaign, but doesn’t have to be.

Cartographers Heroes

This stand-alone expansion to Cartographers was an easy back. I really like Cartographers, and I think with more plays it might move up the list. This adds even more cool things, and the level I backed it at comes with the colored pencils to make it look pretty and a big box to hold everything, and three more maps besides the new one from the Heroes part of it. I’m really excited for this.

The Night Cage

GloryHoundd and DrGloryHogg sold me on this one, I’ve backed so many games that are campaign games that this one seemed like something smaller but a lot of fun. I then got a chance to play it at GenCon and was glad that I’d backed it. It’s a nice tense game but one that plays fast and has a lot of cool things around it. I like the every shifting maze, I like the push and pull of trying to find the keys as fast as possible but not reveal too many tiles at once, and I like the race to the end to see what can happen.

Crash Octopus

This one I got for the bright awesome octopus and the silly fun dexterity piece to it. Also because Itten has a good track record with with their game Tokyo Highway. That game is just great and this one looks like it has more game to it but more silliness as well. I love the idea of flicking things that are floating in the water trying to grab as much as you can before an octopus activates and gets you and steals some of your stuff. It’s a silly idea that seems like a ton of fun.

Marvel United

So, I already have the base game of Marvel United, but they just released pictures of new stuff for it, all the expansions and what not, and that’s going to be getting produced really soon. I’m excited to get that into my hands and just to play that game in general because it seems like it’s going to be so much fun. I need to play my base copy.

Midarra

I had this one on last years list, but turns out it’s coming out this year. They say that the 2nd and 3rd act will as well, I only got the first act, but I suspect that’ll be 2022 or 2023. This is a dungeon crawl with a ton of stuff, Gloomhaven style that way, but has more dice chucking and has a very anime theme. I’m excited to get this one to the table for sure just for the different theme that it has and some of the fun things it does.

Now that’s a lot of games that I have been excited about for this year and before with Kickstarter that’ll be coming. Next article I’m going to talk about games that are going to Kickstarter, maybe, in 2021 that I’m excited for. Expect it to be much shorter since that’s much harder to find out as a lot of companies won’t talk about Kickstarter plans yet.

One of the most important parts of a board game is the board, not really. But a board is a really good spot to start to talk about, because that’s going to influence a few parts of the design.

The Premise

The Characters

The Bosses

The Guilds

The Levels

The Boards

Like a lot of dungeon crawl-esque games, this game isn’t going to have one central board that you go around. In fact my current thought process is that you will have no central board that you play off of. Instead, we’re going to use what something that I’ve seen in games like Forgotten Waters, Stuffed Fables and Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, which is a book.

There are a few reasons for the book, but the biggest is that we want the different levels to feel varied. The amount of tile pieces would be epically high to make a completely varied board. There are a lot in Gloomhaven, and those can seem somewhat limited at times, so to make something feel truly unique for different levels, you’d need a ton of pieces of terrain, and map tiles, and more to really keep it varied, but in this, I want to make it so that each level can be unique. Especially for the boss battle, I want to work with the idea of space in the game. I think that the new Descent game does an interesting thing with that where you build up vertically at times and can push people off of towers and things like that, I want to be able to do that. And some of that can be done with negative space on a map that’s drawn easier than map tiles that just create more random empty space on the table.

Besides the boss battle, it’ll help me be able to change up the level part of the floor, where players can go on quests, fight monsters, shop, and recruit to their guild. I could completely drop off one of them if I wanted, or I could add in additional spots where players can send people to go questing. This will allow each level to again feel different than the previous ones and give hints as to what might be more important for a level, or I really like the idea that some levels might not allow you to do things, maybe like recruit, so you need to plan accordingly, and you might not get that researched or figured out, but you need to have that in your mind that the next level might not have everything you want, or it might mean you can all go questing and pick up story and lore of the world.

But there are going to be a few actual boards in the game. The first will be the player boards. Each character is going to have their own board. This will have their stats as to what they are good at on it. Those stats are going to then influence how good they are at other things. Someone who is average at everything might do okay on all the tasks and tests, but they aren’t going to get the best outcome and I’ll be talking more about that in the future. But players will have ways to keep track of their stats, but along with that, this is where you’ll keep track of skills and equipment, conditions, and things like that which are common for dungeon crawlers. In my mind I want something closer to the Neoprene mats from Midarra versus something like the paper board from Sword & Sorcery. Gloomhaven does it a little bit better, but I want to build even upon that, because I’ve seen some nice custom ones for Gloomhaven that would hold things better. Also, with cool down and tracking skills, I feel like that’s something that Sword & Sorcery tries to do decently well, but ends up not really doing that well, so I’m curious to see how I can improve upon that.

The other board is going to be the guild board, and this one I have more of an idea of what I want on the board. This board is going to be fairly simple. You are going to keep track of a very few things on here. The two primary ones are going to be guild members and morale. Morale is going to be important for a few things, it’ll be about the attrition that you have with the guild or maybe how it’ll grow naturally. The better your morale the more that you’ll also be able to recruit on a floor. The other big thing, as I said, is guild members. Tracking them will be important because as you hit numerical points, that’ll give you more groups of guild members to use on levels. So if you have a ton of them, you’ll be able to cover a lot of ground, but you’ll also be sacrificing opportunities to level up by doing that. Again, building that tension, but also we’re on boards here, so that’s going to be important to track for that reason. Finally you’ll be tracking a few other things, gear level of the guild, statuses that you’ve found, deaths in the guild, and population left in the world. The statuses that you have found as a guild pertaining to the game can influence your options going forward. Gear will make a difference in battle, deaths in the guild will influence left total in the game, so important things, but will be less often you’re checking those things.

For a game this large there was always going to be a bunch of things to keep track of, but I want, with the book for the board, to make it so that part of the game is an easy flip out and play because that’s going to make the game way more accessible to players if they only have to keep track of their own stuff instead of helping set everything else out. I do think that there’ll be some tokens for the boss battle, such as placing on terrain, though I’d love to be able to make as much of that 3D terrain as possible, either 3D molded terrain, but that might be an add-on if it goes to KS or carboard pieces that can be put together to create height and visual appeal. I might pull a bit from what Oathsworn is doing where you can either get minis for the bosses or you can standees as well, but keep the bosses, and any terrain items, hidden away in either envelops with punch out stuff, or something like that, but ways to bring more surprises to the game. But that’s probably something for another time to talk about.

What do you think of the game thus far, definitely still in concept phase with this one, but I’m going to try and tackle some more specifics this week.
