So we’re into the Monday schedule, 8:30 PM for a conversation and some talking about board games. Last night I dove into the world of Small Box Board Games and I did a Top 10 list. What were my favorite ten Small Box board games, you’ll have to find out.

The Games

You’ll have to watch the video to find out what they are, but all games that I really love and all of them are in small boxes, I think the largest box was still smaller than the Just One box for size comparison. I also did skip all the roll and writes in my collection. I can and will do a Top 10 of that overall on Malts and Meeples coming up here, because I have played more than ten roll and write games, so I didn’t want to create that overlap.

Okay, I will at the very bottom put down all the games that were in the Top 10 list, and you can see if you can guess the order. Also, let me know in the comments what some of your favorite small box games are. We had a few one ones tossed out there on the live stream with Tiny Epic Galaxies, Mountain Goats, and more. I like games that come in smaller boxes because they are easier to take places, so finding about more is good.

The Beer

Of course there was a beer, this time it was Aqua Fuzz by Indeed Brewing Company out of Minneapolis. Aqua Fuzz is a hazy IPA that has a nice balance of tropical flavors to it. Hazy IPA’s are a hit or miss beer for me. While I love IPA’s, the hazy IPA’s can often end up being too sweet. This comes from some breweries adding in fruit juice to give it more of that tropical flavor. It also provides more of the hazy look that they are going for. However, for me, that causes them to be too sweet. And as we have talked about before, I do not like sweetness in my IPA’s, at least to finish.

Actually The Games

If you don’t have time to watch through the video, save it for later, and you want to see the list now, here are all the games on the list in no particular order.

  • Parade
  • Claim
  • Say Bye to the Villains
  • Silver Amulet
  • Hanamikoji
  • Point Salad
  • Cross Clues
  • Skull
  • Ohanami
  • Onirim

Take a stab at what order you think I put them in and watch the video and let me know how close you got to being right.

There’s some movie and Disney+ rumors on characters who might be showing up in other shows. Plus, I talk about a new board game that I found, Marvel Champions, and if you’re a board game fan, is this a good Marvel and superhero experience?

Any of those rumors excite you all that much? But more so, did the final Black Widow trailer make you more or less interested in the movie? And, if you are a board game fan, or even if you’re curious to try a hobby board game, does Marvel Champions sound interesting, like something you’d want to try? Let me know in the comments below, or on Twitter by tweeting to me @TheScando or by using #10MinMarvel.

I’m back again with game 14 of Pandemic Legacy Season 1. If you know how Pandemic Legacy works, you know that I’ve had at least a couple of losses in there. But join me to see how the game has been going overall.

Pandemic Legacy is a cooperative game that I’m playing solo where you are trying to cure various diseases that are popping up all over the board. However, in the legacy version of the game, you have rules that change, and the board changes as time goes on. So are you able to save the world? More information can be found on Board Game Geek.

My malt was Splendid Moose from Insight Brewing. Insight is local to Minneapolis, and one of my favorite breweries for their branding, their tap room, and their beer. Splendid Moose is a hazy IPA with really nice citrus flavors. You can find more about their beers on their website, linked here.

Bottoms up!

This is going to be a pretty short post, but I wanted to get it out today so that I would have more motivation to get this done as well.

Cartridge Capers

Is going to be a new series or articles that will come out from time to time as I play through classic NES/SNES games. I might make it through the whole game, and I might not. It’ll really depend on the game, because there are some poor ones out there. We’ll also get to learn about how well I can play these old games, and generally the answer will be not that well. I didn’t grow up on these systems so now I get to be a kid again and play through a lot of them for the first time.

Beyond that, why do I want to do this?

Reason #1 Because it’s kind of a crazy right now. Nintendo has put out their own retro systems, you can build or buy a RetroPie or you can find the old games.

For those who might want to do it, which would I recommend. Being a not to nostalgic, but liking to have the cartridges myself, I went with an option that isn’t fully up there. I have a RetroN gaming system from Hyperkin. It’s something that’s fairly new and fairly cool in that it allows me to play both NES and SNES games on the same system, and it has the unique controllers for both. However, I have played on the RetroPie as well, which is an emulator that can play basically any system with everything loaded onto it. It’s generally built on a Raspberry Pi micro computer. It’s also fun, and allows you not to have to buy specific games. However, you have a single controller for a lot of systems, so you do miss out on the feel.

Reason #2 I didn’t get to play these as a kid. Now that seems kind of goofy, why would I want to play them now? I grew up playing a number of computer games like Jazz Jackrabbit (which was awesome), other side scrolling platformers or side scrolling shooters but I didn’t have a gaming system. I don’t think I was a kid who really cared that much that I was missing out on that, but looking back on it, I want to know what I was missing out on, plus, I like that style of game a lot better than a fair number of modern games, because they can make me motion sick at times (the modern ones that is). It’s annoying.

I also like the idea of a game being “simple” enough that I can sit down and play for a few minutes without feeling like I have to learn a massive specific lore. I love games that do that, Dragon Age, for example, has tons of lore and adventure to it, but often times I like to get my stories through other mediums like TV Shows, Movies, and Books. So having a game that is easier to just play and have my brain turned off for, that’s great.

Reason #3 There’s an awesome little retro shop with retro video games, a lot of other off the wall stuff, and a big board game selection. So naturally I had to go and check it out. That’s where I stumbled across the RetroN system and decided that I should get one. Mainly because I could look at their selection and see games like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Super Mario, Teen Age Mutant Ninja Turtles, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, Ducktales, Mortal Kombat, and so many more. I’ve played some of those now, but I want to play even more.

Image Source: Heroic Goods & Games

Also, let me plug the shop a little bit. Heroic Goods and Games is an awesome little shop. I already said that, but I think I deserves to be repeated. The owner of the shop is really friendly and loves the shop. They almost always have a ton of inventory, in fact, they’ve had so much that you can go in there decently often and find that they are having a sale on retro video games. Put it’s the little store that you can come in and find whatever you want. Last time Kristen and I were in there, there was a family from Wisconsin who was in there, and they had been looking for things at larger game stores in Minneapolis and St. Paul but hadn’t been finding what they wanted. They had just stumbled across this place and were finding so many things and loving it. It’s a wonderful place to shop, and if you want to sell your old games, or maybe get even more old video games, they have a great selection. It’s a small town place in the heart of the big city, and it’s amazing.

I think those are good reasons to be wanting to do this, also it’s going to help me play through some of these games that it might take me a bit to get to otherwise. But the big question coming out of this, and check us out on Facebook/Twitter, what game should I play first? Facebook and Twitter will each have polls.

We had some people from Minneapolis, Minnesota reach out to us about their Sci-Fi story podcast. They heard about our podcast, Dungeons and Flagons, and asked if we’d be interested in sharing anything about theirs as they are currently doing a Kickstarter for additional money to get the whole series fully recorded and produced.

Listen to their introductory episode which is up on SoundCloud.

Also, check out their Kickstarter which is up currently.

If you’re interested in helping a produced audio series. Pour some nice Scotch and listen to a new Sci-Fi story.

We are talking about a little nerdy culture today. You might be thinking, where are my comic book hero roster update (and isn’t this slightly late). For the first one, coming back next week. For the second part, moving is a lot of fun, but I’m getting the post taken care of.

So let’s start out with, what is CONvergence?

CONvergence is a nerdy convention based out of Minneapolis. It is around the fourth of July weekend every year. They have different themes every year, and this year it is about the nerdy means of travel. This is by far the weakest theme that I’ve gone to, the British Invasion and Dystopian. However, besides the theme, there are a lot of other interesting things about the con. It isn’t that large a con, only gathering around 6,000 people, but that means that it isn’t nearly as crazy as larger cons. In the evening the party suites/rooms open up and you can walk around the cabana getting drinks and going into different themed rooms. There have been some that are Zelda themed, the Eolian from the Kingkiller Chronicles, Star Trek, and many other different rooms. A lot of them have booze, some of them have tea, and there is the House of Toast which has something like 100 different ingredients that they put on the toast.

Why CONvergence?

20150702_202437

Now that Wizard World Comic Con is coming to Minneapolis for the past few years, why do I still go to the small CONvergence? It’s because it is small and it attracts and older crowd. Because the drinking/party rooms are a fun part of it, it tends to have an older crowd. Along with that, you tend to have a crowd that handles themselves better. I’m sure there are incidents that happen every year there, but it tends to be less crazy. That said, the big reason I went in the first place was because James Moran was going to be there one year. He is a screenwriter who wrote “The Fires of Pompeii” episode of Doctor Who and the screenplays for the movies Severance and Cockneys vs Zombies. If you haven’t seen either of those films, do yourself and watch at least Cockneys vs Zombies. My wife doesn’t like zombies all that well, and she enjoyed Cockneys vs Zombies. It’s in the vein of Shaun of the Dead.

What Keeps Me Coming Back?

Probably the biggest thing is the panels. There are often a lot of interesting panels on different nerdy topics. The first time there were a lot of British themed panels and I got to learn a whole bunch more British slang which I’ve probably lost most of now. But the panels are probably one of my favorite parts. I’m sure that other people are really tied into the gaming aspect, or the party aspect (which is fun), or just the social aspect of cosplay and the other random events that they have going on. But when I go to a con, like CONvergence, I always hope to learn something new, and generally I do. I lost of list when I got a new phone, but I had a list of something over 50+ lousy dystopian movies that I could watch, and I maybe got through one or two during the year, but it’s fun stuff like that which keeps me coming back.

20150702_203552

Should You Go To CONvergence?

I would recommend it. I think it is a CON that most people would have fun going to. It is one that is fairly family friendly during the day, and is a blast for the 20 and 30 year-olds who want to party in the evening. People are respectful and generally the themes are very interesting. And if you like the Cosplay, it is a great spot to do it.

If you are going to be there, look for Raven and Beast Boy on the Friday as Kristen and I will be there, and say hi. We’ll have some Nerdologists.com badge ribbons on us.

Check out CONvergence here!

And as always find us on twitter @NerdologistCast and search for us on Facebook under Nerdologists. You can find me on twitter @TheScando. Hope to see you at the CON!
