Am I up for the challenge?

It’s back down to the table for the next part of the story in Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. Will my streak continue of losing the scenario the first time or will this be the one where I manage to get a win? Or will Seoni and Amiri get stuck behind closing yet another location?

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Characters

Let’s talk a bit about the characters and picking characters. What we’ve seen in these few scenarios thus far is that I maybe am not going with the most ideal team of characters. Why, because we are seeing a lot of things that are looking for diplomacy, crafting, acrobatics, things along those lines. But, that isn’t an issue with the game.

Yes, it seems like there are certain skills are a bit more prevalent in what I am doing. But I do not mind it. Why, because it is a challenge for me to beat. It means that I have a different puzzle to figure out than a higher player count game. If I play with four characters, I probably have someone who is good at a skill. So I send them to a specific location to deal with it. Now, instead, I need to figure out how to deal with it in a creative way.

For example, closing or guarding a location. Seoni carries a blessing and an ally that allow her to close things easier. I believe it is a bless, so 2 of the skill die, and an extra D8 from her ally. And the boots she got allow her to gain even more dice at certain types of locations. So I keep those cards with her as much as I can. However, she is not the best at attacking, which means they often can get lost when she takes damage. It is a fun balancing act, puzzle, that between her and Amiri I need to figure out.

Upcoming Streams

So let’s talk about what we are streaming next week. On Monday my plan is to stream an unboxing, or a first look at Stars of Akarios from OOMM Games. It is coming tomorrow, so I might look at it before then, but plan will be the show off some stuff from the game and talk about it. Plus, I might have other packages coming in to look at as well. And I will pick a topic to chat about as well, in the style of BoardGameCo.

Wednesday is going to be another game of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. I will, of course, need to play through the scenario again. Hopefully it’ll go better this time and I will know what I am doing more so. I do have my plan, which I lay out above, for Seoni for that one location.

And I plan on streaming on Thursday as well. I keep on teasing it, but Crowdfunding BIG and little. Right now there isn’t much that is too big, but I’m sure there will be more interesting things coming to crowdfunding next Tuesday. That is a lot of content and I hope to get Crowdfunding BIG and little done. Though, it might not end up being a live show, if it looks like it doesn’t fit into my schedule. I might record it and then release it on Thursday.

Was it a smashing success or were my heroes beaten back?

The post Pathfinder Adventure Card Game – Game 1 first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
It’s time for a new campaign. And we have the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game on the table. I am playing the 2nd edition of the game for the first time with all of you. And that includes picking out some characters. But how did the introductory scenario go, was I able to take out the bandit leader and the dire wolves? Or will I be going back to play it again, this time on normal mode?

The Game -Pathfinder Adventure Card Game

So let’s talk about this game. I consider this to be in the same family of games as something like Arkham Horror The Card Game. Though, Arkham Horror builds on what is done with the cards for the locations. And it can change up more based upon that. But Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, on the flip side, I think has more robust characters for me, or at least characters that I’d consider more fun.

But, the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, generally, is a card game where you take heroes out on missions, fight bad guys, find loot, and generally build up your characters deck of cards until you face off against the big bad guy. All of the adventures are connected by a little bit of story that you can read as you go and then randomized locations.

You explore at those locations looking to corner the bad guy for that mission and closing locations based off of the cards that you have. However, as you go and spend cards to get boons and defeat banes, you sometimes spend cards discarding them. And when you run out of cards and need to draw more, you die in the scenario. Now, the other characters can still complete it, but all the while, time is running out as well.

Overall, a fun game for me. I like the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game and there is a decent app for it that is based more off of the first game than the newest edition. I’ll be talking about the differences between the two once I play this new one a little bit more.

The Drink

Old Fashioned again last night. This time with lemon bitters. A good old fashioned is just enjoyable to drink and my normal way to change it up is different types of bitters. Lemon, I like, though lemon bitters can, with too much, taste a bit like cleaner, or lemon pledge. Do you have a favorite bitters to use in a cocktail?

Upcoming Streams

On Monday, I am going to be doing an unboxing of Massive Darkness 2. My collection for that is going to be the core box, the campaign expansion, and then two more expansions to add in more heroes and villains.

And on Wednesday, more Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. How will it go this time? I have improved characters, will I be able to defeat it, though now it’ll be on normal mode which means more time, but also more cards to get through, more monsters, potentially to fight, and all of that could spell more trouble.

The post On Tour Play Along and Chat first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
I am playing a new game. After wrapping up Paper Dungeons last Wednesday, and before I get into a new game next week, we have a one off stream on Malts and Meeples. On Tour from BoardGameTables.com is getting to the table. BoardGameTables.com doesn’t make just game tables, like I own, but also a number of very fun games.

The Game – On Tour

On Tour is going to be another roll and write, and a pretty straight forward one at that. In it, you are just trying to build out the best possible route for your band to tour. To do that, you need to plot a course around the states in the United States so that you have a path going from low to high. You are limited, though, as to where you can put your stops though, based off of location cards flipped each turn.

I knocked out two games of this in about an hour while chatting as we went. So without that, I could probably play a game in 10-15 minutes. And with the app, which there is a solid app, it is maybe 10 minutes to get through a game. If you want a high quality production roll and write but one that isn’t to challenging, On Tour is quite good.

The Drink

Nothing fancy this week, though, I guess I ended with a more interesting drink. The first was an Old Fashioned, nothing special about that. I drink those quite often. The second drink is Copper & Kings Cr&ftwerk Brandy which was aged in Oskar Blues Imperial IPA Barrel. I normally don’t have brandy, but I find that Cr&ftwerk, and in particular the IPA Barrel finished one, is nice for sipping.

Upcoming Streams

So, next week we are getting into a new schedule. In particular, we are going to be starting our new campaign game with Pathfinder Adventure Card Game in it’s newest edition. I am curious to try it and compare it to what I’ve played of the original game. And I do own some of the original game that I could play and stream as well.

But beyond that, I talked about some things that I wanted to do. In particular, that I want to stream every Monday, if I can. It’ll go between a conversation and maybe light game play like last night. To a Top 10 list, or maybe coverage of Kickstarters and Gamefound. To be determined on everything that it might be. But I want to start doing more coverage so that I can help Malts and Meeples grow more as well as Nerdologists.com. Let me know what type of content you would want to see?

Is it a good solo game, it is okay, but how could it be better?

The post Chatting About GenCon and Village Green first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Last night I had a last minute stream at 8:30 central time over on Malts and Meeples. Part of that time was spent talking about conventions and play some Village Green. GenCon just released their event list and while you can’t sign up for anything yet, you can look and see what you might want to sign up for. So I spent a bit of time looking through that yesterday figuring out what I was interested in.

Plus then Village Green with some solo play. A game that I would probably give an 8 as a multi-player game but a 6 as a solo game. At least with how the solo is in the book. I mess around with it a little to see if I can make it more interesting for myself. And I think I found a way that I like to play it better.

The Game – Village Green

Village Green is a fairly interesting little game where you are competing for the best green between a number of villages. Think about the subplot to Hot Fuzz almost. But instead of everything being done for the greater good, you are picking cards to fill out your green. They might have trees, a pond, a gazebo, and generally they have flowers as well.

With those, you create a 3×3 grid. And on the edge of that, both for columns and rows, you add in cards to score for that column or row. It makes creating your green a very interesting puzzle. You need to think about scoring in both directions, kind of like Criss Cross. And while Village Green feels like it should be more interesting solo, I found that it was actually less.

GenCon Events

I think it is an interesting topic to talk about. And in particular, I like to talk to new attendees about going there. One of the best pieces of advice that I received when I went was not to over schedule. And I didn’t, but I also wish that I scheduled less than I did. I think we average two things each day, maybe one day with three. So 9 or so total events, and it was great to do them, but by the end, so maybe it was 10, we skipped one.

Why, because it’s so much fun to do the games that are on the floor. Some of them might be prototypes, a lot of them are games that you can buy at GenCon from companies. It’s more interesting than picking out specific events with a few exceptions.

This year, I looked for events that are going to be unique. If it is playing a game I can likely play elsewhere, I am not going to do it. So instead, I looked for the kick-off events for a few games, Sagrada Legacy and The Batman: Everybody Lies. Plus then playtesting for prototype games. Now, those prototype games might not be great, but it is something I can’t play elsewhere.

Maybe I’ll find that I want to schedule more events while I’m there. And by then it’ll be too late, but I suspect the wandering around the dealer hall, hitting up a ton of different dealers to get demos of games, that is going to be more interesting than finding a 3 hour RPG to play some morning.

The Drink

Just an old fashioned again. This time with Blackstrap bitters. They have kind of a molasses and spice flavor to them. It’s nice, a little bit sweet as well. Definitely a good one to drink.

Upcoming Streams

Well, I am going to be streaming on Wednesday. I am not sure what I want to play for sure. It might be some more Paper Dungeons roll and write and I can continue through the story on stream. I do want get to a bigger game, I just haven’t learned another yet. I could maybe play through a scenario of Perdition’s Mouth, but it is a very large game on the table so you wouldn’t able to see everything.

Maybe I’ll pull out Under Falling Skies, we’ll have to see. But that could be a good, lighter, campaign to get to the table quickly here, while I take the time to learn a bigger game. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Should It Stay Or Should It Go – Part 4 https://nerdologists.com/2022/04/should-it-stay-or-should-it-go-part-4/ https://nerdologists.com/2022/04/should-it-stay-or-should-it-go-part-4/#comments Thu, 07 Apr 2022 13:35:50 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=6877 It was a busy stream, went through a whole lot of board games because I got to cubbies that are stuffed with roll and writes. Which made the cut?

The post Should It Stay Or Should It Go – Part 4 first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
No board games played last night on Malts and Meeples. But I did go through more of my game collection, looking for games that can leave and free up more space on my Kallax shelves. Turns out there are a number this time that are going, though, not that many big ones. Watch the previous parts here.

What Board Games Are Leaving?

There are four games that are kind of leaving, or potentially doing so, let’s go through those first. Mainly, I remember those off the top of my head. One for sure is leaving, but also staying. One might come to live at work. And two I need to check on to see if they will leave.

Boomerang USA

Boomerang USA is kind of leaving. I got it on a good sale and then realized I had Boomerang already for a roll and write game. I don’t need two copies of what are basically the same game. Just Boomerang USA is a US map and regular Boomerang is Australia, which makes more sense.

Quarto

This is the one that is going to work to see about. It is a solid abstract game. I like the concept of it when I played it. You pick the piece your opponent places down. What keeps me from loving it is that after two plays, the game didn’t feel like it’d be that different. I want to try it at work because it is a fast game. So might work better in that setting. I just know I won’t play it at home more.

Quoridor

This is a game that I have enjoyed. And I think Quoridor is one that is great for a lot of people. It’s a simple abstract game that gives you some real clever plays. The issue is my group has “solved” it. By that I mean we always make the last possible person block. And honestly, it is not that much fun when you stick the block with the last person. I could see it being better now at two than four, but not one that is going to stick around, I don’t think.

Second Chance

This is a game that has had a dramatic fall for me from my original top 100’s to being outside of it this past year. Second Chance isn’t a bad game. I suspect that it is one my wife is likely to save. My issue with it is that I’ve played it a lot. I’ve gotten my phone with it and I am ready to move on from it. Patchwork Doodle does something similar and offers more choices.

Second Chance

Deadly Doodles (1 & 2)

Deadly Doodles is a solid little roll and write game. It takes a dungeon crawl idea and makes it extremely simple. And that’s why it is leaving. I think the expansion adds in more, but it has a lot of expansion boards. And with those boards, you need to learn more and it is harder to get to the table. I would say, there are probably too many extra boards. Plus, Paper Dungeons has knocked this one down for me. Similar concept, but Paper Dungeons is a more interesting game.

Photosynthesis

This one was tough to say that it was leaving. I like it as a good abstract game, but I knew I was starting with that cube, and I knew it just wouldn’t make the cut. The game is gorgeous. 3D cardboard trees look amazing. And I like how mean the game can be. I am trying to get my trees to grow better and faster than yours and block your trees from getting light points to spend as action points. The game looks less mean than it actually is, and I am keeping another game like that.

Ascension: Immortal Heroes

I have three versions of Ascension. I thought that I’d maybe play them all more often than I do. And I guess, that is three versions of Ascension that I am keeping. But I can get them all into one box, so they are sticking around. Immortal Heroes, it seems fun, but higher player count doesn’t add much to me. And I don’t know that I need any more Ascension than what I already have.

Welcome To New Las Vegas

I own Welcome To, which I love. I own Welcome To The Moon that I want to try. But Welcome To New Las Vegas, I was really excited for. I am not so excited anymore. The game looks good, but it looks like too much to me. It’s a two sheet roll and write game, which I don’t mind. But it feels like a lot of busywork without the fun theme of Welcome To. So I don’t think I need all three of the games in the line. And Welcome To The Moon with it’s campaign, that is more interesting.

The Drink

Just an Old Fashioned again. This time, though, I made it with rhubarb bitters. Now, I am out of rhubarb bitters. I really like the flavor of rhubarb, it grapefruit, and lemon are probably the bitters that I always want to have on hand.

Upcoming Stream

So, next Monday, I plan on streaming. I will not be streaming next Wednesday. I have family in town so I won’t be around on Wednesday. Monday, I am planning on doing more of the Should It Stay Or Should It Go series.

And I have to say, I am pleased with the amount I found again for the chopping block. Granted, a few might be going back. I think there is a decent chance that Second Chance is saved because it is so accessible. And it is a fun game. For me, I won’t complain if it is, because I don’t mind it. It is just one that I like to play now versus one that I want to pull off the shelf myself and play.

Which one would you save? Which one would you get rid of?

The post Should It Stay or Should It Go (Part 3) first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
So last week, because of a migraine and just timing, I didn’t send up streaming. Well, I didn’t end up streaming on my normal days. I had some time Friday evening to stream and doing so, which was a bonus. That stream, I finished going through my first Kallax making eve more space in it as I figured out new games that were leaving the collection and consolidated others. You can watch Part 2 here. So what board games are in the collection or leaving?

Which Board Games Are Leaving?

Like last time, I’m doing this basically as a Point of Sale where I look at what games are leaving my collection. And I talked about it a bit, i had been thinking about trading them, and I likely will still for some. But there is a board game market coming up at a cidery very close to me in May. My goal is to have a number of games to sell by then and I’ve already signed-up, waiting on confirmation, for a table.

The War of Mine

This one I bought a while ago from the interesting review of NPI (No Pun Included). I thought that it looked like a good, but depressing solo game. They brought up that the rules are an issue. And that is why it is leaving my collection. I’ve spent some time trying to learn the rules and how to play, but with the dark theme and hard rules, I’m not sure I need it.

Dead of Winter

Dead of Winter is a game that is consistently in my Top 100, though, hanging on the lower edge the past year or so. The reason it’s going is that the game is just too hard to get to the table. I’ve played it probably ten times and there is a learning curve, albeit a minor one, each time. That isn’t the end of the world, but add in a longer game time even on the shorter scenarios, and it just doesn’t get played that often. I have the Dead of Winter and Long Night, so both are going away.

Mage Knight

Speaking of games that are hard to get tot he table, Mage Knight never made it to my table. It is one that I had plans to stream, but the game has enough stuff, and the rule book is not great, that I kept on putting it off. Now, I just don’t think that I’m going to play it. But it is one of those where I can get it back if and when I want to play it. I know Mage Knight is supposed to be a great solo game.

7th Continent

Another one that I know is supposed to be a great solo game. But 7th Continent is leaving my collection. I maybe should hold onto it longer, but I backed 7th Citadel. 7th Citadel is more story driven, it seems, than 7th Continent where you are wandering, especially for the first curse. If each curse took two hours or even two hours and win or lose, I would keep it. But 7th Citadel promising me more story, even though maybe not for a bit, I’ll move on from 7th Continent.

Homebrewers (kind of)

So, this isn’t in the video, and that is because I didn’t have the game yet when I did the video. Now, I kind of had the game, I do own a copy of Homebrewers, and I bought a second one on Kickstarter because it had the equipment expansion with it. That expansion is almost impossible to find. I found a copy in the UK for $1 or so, plus $28 shipping. Or I found one with the board game in the US for the same price. So the second copy is going to get sold.

The Drink

Just a classic old fashioned. I find that is what I want right now. We’re not to the point where I want really hoppy beers on warm days, we’re aren’t warm yet. And while my Creamsicle drink the week before is good, I don’t want that much sweet all of the time. And Old Fashioned just adds in enough sweet to it, plus I can balance it out by adding in more bitters as I need.

Upcoming Streams

So no stream last night, was getting some new kittens. But I plan on streaming tomorrow, most likely Part 4 of Should It Stay or Should It Go. I might throw in a game play as well. I’m not quite at the point with Perdition’s Mouth: Abyssal Rift to be ready to play it, though I am learning the rules. And I have deadlines for both Should It Stay or Should It Go and Perdition’s Mouth.

Unfortunately the audio is bad for part of it, but join me as I take on this board game adventure from Red Raven Games.

The post Sleeping Gods Game Play Part 5 first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
It’s time for more Sleeping Gods, and of course, it’s time to remember to read the cards. Some fun things happened, more combat than I might have thought, and a mistake was made. I’ll be trying to correct that mistake going forward as I did in this past session. Not a major game play mistake, did make some of those, but another mistake when it comes to the story, because I didn’t read something correctly.

Join with me as I realize that and the crew of the Manticore explores the world created by Red Raven Games in Sleeping Gods. Also I apologize for the double sound. I had to set-up a camera again and forgot to mute that audio until part way through. Catch up here, and I’ll recap what I did this past stream at the start of next one since the audio is rough.

The Game Sleeping Gods

Let’s talk about playing Sleeping Gods solo. Because, in Sleeping Gods you play as the crew of the Manticore. That means you play nine crew members and that seems like it should be a lot to keep track of. And it is a bunch, but I don’t find it overbearing.

Firstly, I don’t find it too much because you play a the crew of the Manticore, that group, versus one characters actions then another and so on. If it was one crew member, it would be trickier because you’d need to pay more specific attention to what that crew member can do.

As it is, I pay attention to symbols most of the time. Who has the most perception or strength, and that’s just a quick scan of cards. And that makes it easy. When I get a status affect, like low morale, I can look and see quickly who can remove it. The symbols make so much of it easier than you’d think.

Where it can be slower is the cards. And the more cards you have, the easier to miss something. Or at least you could. It requires a bit more reading. Though, a lot of the cards don’t add too much complexity. And, for example, the cards on Captain Odessa, I might use them, but only when really needed because they help her too.

Beyond the number of crew, the game plays pretty easily. Finding stuff in the book, easy. Getting everything sorted out, easy, granted, I am using Game Trayz, so that makes it even easier. But baggies for the tokens are simple enough to use. And the save system, while mainly just baggies for the crew really works.

The Drink

I didn’t spend too much time on it this week. But I had mixed together basically gin, simple syrup and mint bitters. So the basis of an Old Fashioned minus the whiskey and swapping in gin. It makes a tasty drink, not one that I want all the time, but very good. It has a nice Christmas flavor to it. And while we are past Christmas, it’s still cold winter in Minnesota, so I like a festive drink.

Upcoming Streaming

So a few things to talk about that are upcoming. Let’s start with next Wednesday we’re going to have some more Sleeping Gods to stream. 8 PM Central. If you want to know when I go live, subscribe and click the notification bell for Malts and Meeples.

But let’s talk about some upcoming things. Firstly, I want to cover crowdfunding more like I’ve been saying. It won’t be an edited video most likely, but no live. And I also want to go through my collection. I do the Point of Order and Point of Sale articles, but I want to see what I might cull. I think that might be a live just for a chance to interact with people more.

Join me at the table as I play through the next chapter in this legacy, deck-building cooperative board game. There will be spoilers for Aeon’s End Legacy, so if you’re planning on playing or interested and want to know how the game works, checkout my Aeon’s End play through.

The Game

Aeon’s End, like I said, it a cooperative deck building game. Aeon’s End Legacy adds in a Legacy element to that game. There are five different big boxes out for the game, including Legacy, as well as 10 small box expansions. Each of the big boxes can be combines with the others to give you a massive amount of combinations to play with.

The game itself is a deck builder, but one that is pretty unique. The main unique element is that you don’t shuffle your deck. If you run out of cards and need to draw more, you simply flip over your discard pile. It is also a deck builder that has more going on. And that is something that I look for in deck building games.

You are deck building, but like most cooperative games, you have a number of ways to lose. If the nemesis kills all your mages, game over, if the nemesis destroy Gravehold, game over. It also gives you multiple ways to win, sometimes. If you kill off the nemesis you win. If you can survive long enough and deal with all the nemesis cards, you also win. It is a game that is challenging, but also one where you really feel like the you level up and get more powerful as the game goes.

You can see my full review of Aeon’s End: War Eternal here.

The Drink

Last nights drink was an Old Fashioned. Now, you might see some bar old fashioned where you have maraschino cherries, orange peels, and more in them. If you want to do a simple orange peel garnish, that’s okay. But to me, an Old Fashioned should have three things: whiskey, bitters, simple syrup (or sugar and water mixed together). That highlights both the bitters and the whiskey well. The other garnishes or ingredients that people will put in muddies up the flavor for me.

Upcoming Streams

So next week I don’t plan on streaming at all. I have family in town so most likely will be busy entertaining and hanging out on Wednesday.

On the following Monday, the 26th, I will be doing a Top 10 List, TBD on the topic. But it’s down between Gateway Games and Roll and Writes, let me know your thoughts below.

And then the 28th, Wednesday, I’ll be streaming Chapter 3 of Aeon’s End Legacy. Pushing towards that half way point and seeing how many more/cool things will be unlocked.

No game play, but I did a big unboxing of Middara: Unintentional Mallum Act 1 you can check out.

So last nights stream was late. A channel that I normally like to catch live had to move a show. I talk about them often, GloryHoundd, and they are great streamers that are definitely worth checking out. Tons of great crowdfunding content and game play live streams. Dr GloryHogg, one of the two hosts is who I was chatting with in chat. But enough about that, last nights stream was a massive unboxing of Middara: Unintentional Mallum Act 1, plus a Pitchcar extension.

The Games

So two games that I unboxed yesterday. The first was Extension 6 for Pitchcar and then Middara: Unintentional Mallum Act 1, which was the bigger part of the stream. Two very different games that I’ll talk about quick here.

Pitchcar Extension 6

So Pitchcar is a flicking game, in fact, I wrote up a review about it yesterday which you can see here. I already had a bunch of stuff for it, but I decided that I wanted more. Getting more stuff for Pitchcar basically means that you can create more different and creative tracks. This one adds in a few pieces that I’ve already seen with a thin track and some jump pieces you can put in. Definitely just means we can create a trickier course and a bit longer course or us to crash repeatedly on, but that’s the fun of it.

Middara: Unintentional Mallum Act 1

This game is a totally different animal. It is a massive dungeon crawling game, but it is a little bit different. You can see a lot of the content in it, but the box is shorter but wider and longer than that of Gloomhaven. So another crazy large box. But the theme is different as well. In Gloomhaven and the likes of Sword & Sorcery, you have standard fantasy. Middara is definitely fantasy, but they give it an anime twist to it.

The artwork in the game is amazing. It has strong anime influences on it. Now that does mean that you end up with some fan service at times, but it doesn’t seem to be a predominant part of the game. If it was everywhere, I would be less interested in the game. The sculpts are good, not as detailed as some, but there are a lot of them. You can see how many I unpack, like I said, it’s a lot of them.

But what really blew me away was the books. Gloomhaven has a decent sized adventure book, Solomon Kane has a lot of small adventure books, MIddara has one huge adventure book. I think it was just shy of 500 pages. Now, I could read that all, and I might as I go along, or I can use the Foreteller app which has full narration for it, as well as games like Gloomhaven and Frosthaven when that comes out. I like that more of these massive adventure games are creating narration.

The Booze

So last night I didn’t end up having a beer. I started sipping on an Old Fashioned during the GloryHoundd “Should You Back” stream and decided just to stick with that. Of course, I got to talk some about what I’m drinking. This time it was about the different types of Old Fashioneds that you see around. Mainly talking about the simplicity of the normal Old Fashioned which is just whiskey, bitters, and simple syrup. I don’t want any Maraschino cherry in my Old Fashioned, maybe an orange peal.

Next Week

So next week will be a stream free week unless I decide to do one on Monday. I am busy on Wednesday evening, so no stream happening then. The following week I plan on getting back to Arkham Horror: The Card Game and sipping a beer. So I’ll see you in two weeks as the following Monday is Memorial Day so no stream that day most likely either. Keep an eye on my Twitter and Facebook for upcoming streams.

Normally with Eating Nerdy, I try and go with a movie, show, or game that is a bit more obscure that you can make an event around and how you can feed people while staying in theme. That’s what I’m trying to do here as well, though this is a bit more Halloween focused and Mansions of Madness is a pretty big and well known game. But with it being around Halloween, this seemed like the right thing to do. So you might notice that the theming isn’t going to be as closely tied to Mansions of Madness but more focused on Halloween and how you can incorporate the two together. If you want more specially themed to the Lovecraftian set-up of Mansions of Madness, you can checkout the article that I wrote about Eating Nerdy and Arkham Horror back in September of 2016.

So what are the things to think about with Mansions of Madness, how would that have a Halloween feel to it? The game is an investigative game where you are exploring a house or various locations trying to stop cultists from bringing about the end of the world, or there are other scenarios as well. I’ve only played the one introductory scenario twice.

Starting with invitations to the party, they should probably be mailed out with some old time font or better yet hand written. Then add in a request that people dress up like they’re from the 1920’s. Whatever they feel like is appropriately 1920’s should work as that is when Lovecraft wrote and when the games are set. I’d definitely also find some nice atmospheric music to play during the game and during the party as well. Also, figure out a way to dim your lights or to create that feel of suspense through the mood. If you could get enough electric or other candles to make the room bright enough to see, that would be good, or figure out a way that it’s light enough to see the board well, but the corners of the room are a bit dark.

As for drinks, to borrow from my Arkham Horror post, stick with the classic drinks. Old Fashioned or a Martini would work really well. Just straight up scotch also would be really good. Have some mulled hot apple cider for those who might not want to have an alcoholic drink or for when people want to switch it up. A good old fashioned rootbeer would work nicely as well. There’s a book, Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails that has a lot of very nice recipes that you could pull from to create more thematic cocktails as well.

I’m not going to recommend a big meal for this, this is supposed to be a Halloween get together as well as Mansions of Madness, and I’d say just get down to gaming. Instead, focus on easier to eat finger foods. Caramel apples is an obvious choice for Halloween. Chips and salsa, peanuts and pretzels, just keep it simple for as you are playing. I’d also suggest that you ask people to bring food for this as well, it can be a longer game to play, so share the bringing of food, and if you do that, you can maybe got with some more labor intensive foods that would be more thematically appropriate for Halloween or for Mansions of Madness. I think going either way with the food would work for the event.

While you are playing, lean into the role playing your characters. People should be encouraged to pick the person who most looks like them or most looks like how they are dressed up. Do you over the top east coast accents or your noir detective voices, and really encourage people getting into and creating the story of your characters in the game. The Mansions of Madness characters do have some information about how they started to investigate these horrific events or ones like them, so have some fun with that. If you’ve made it atmospheric you’ll have a nice combination of suspense and goofy by getting into the role playing.

One thing to consider with Mansions of Madness is the app integration. In my case, since I have a projector, I’d be tempted to figure out a way to display it up there, because it wouldn’t be too obtrusive there and would allow everyone to easily see the text that is coming up. A tablet or laptop would work just fine as well, but figure out a way so that people can see it. I’d also consider, if you can, changing away your laptop from the normally harsher blue light that you get on TV’s, computers, and tablets. A lot of the newer tablets and other devices, you can go with a more yellow based lighting scheme, and that will fit into the aesthetic that you’re trying to create better than a blue light would.

What other things would you want to do to give it more of a Halloween feel? Doing something like pumpkin carving, to see who could carve the best elder god would be fun way to start the night and would also give you some fun lighting to use later as the jack-o-lanterns are lit.
