There is actually a little bit of Marvel news this week Some of the news is a Sony announcement that has both of us more interested than other Sony movies. Plus a board game announcement which you know is going to have me interested.

And then this weeks #10MinMarvel is all about the TV shows. There were eight, not counting specials in Phase 4. How do we rank all of them, which ones stood out to us, and which ones were maybe missing a little bit of what we hoped we’d see from them.

And just a quick reminder, no episode next week. We record our episodes on Sunday night and next Sunday is Christmas Day, so we want to leave that time open for spending with family.

It’s a slow week for Marvel news, we have one award to quickly talk about, but that’s it. Next week we might talk about the Golden Globe nominations. So we spend most of our time on the main topic this week, how do we rank the movies in phase 4? The lists end up being fairly similar, but different at the top and the bottom. Come see how it all shakes out and where your favorite phase 4 movies land.

Due to Covid-19, we’re seeing a lot of fluctuation in the Marvel movie schedule for Phase 4, plus one of the biggest conventions for Marvel announcements isn’t going to happen in 2020. Then I talk about a late 1990’s and early 2000’s comic book run of Thor and the first arc in that story.

If you are enjoying the podcast, first of all, thank you for listening. We are consistently getting around 150-175 listens per month which is awesome. The post Hawkeye – First Impressions first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
So, with the announcement of Phase 4 by Marvel at Comic Con, I do a quick rundown on 10 Minute Marvel yesterday, I thought I should start going back to some of the comics. In particular, I have the first two trade paperbacks (tpb) from Matt Fractions run of Hawkeye and Neil Gaiman’s Eternals.

I started with Hawkeye, because it’s been longer, and I’ve only gotten through one of the books, thus first impressions. But I really enjoyed reading most of it again. Just to quickly touch on the one part that I didn’t like, there is a Kate Bishop story from the Young Avengers that felt different enough that it wasn’t that great. The actual stories from the Hawkeye series were very good.

So, why am I reading the Hawkeye comic by Matt Fraction? In the graphic for the MCU Phase 4 found in an earlier article, shows the Hawkeye logo. That logo is extremely close to the logo for Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye logo. To me, that implies we’re likely going to get something that borrows from Fractions run. There are also rumors of Young Avengers, which likely would have Kate Bishop as one of their members, so it would make sense that Clint Barton would be training her and showing her the ropes.

But on to the comic, it’s an interesting story, or I should stay story. There are a number of vignettes, versus a single arching story in the first tpb. And in these, we get to see how rough it is being Hawkeye. He takes on, and defeats, bad guys, but it’s never an easy process. Mainly, because, even when he is going up against normal bad guys, he is just a normal guy himself, and if he’s up against people with super powers, while he is extremely skilled and comes out on top, he’s still a normal guy. These vignettes also just show some of his normal life. All this time, he’s training or hanging out with Kate Bishop, though she’s very capable at this time, and you kind of have two Hawkeyes.

I like that it’s not a big over arching story because you do really start to feel like you’re seeing something different than your standard comics. You get to see a character struggle, make difficult decisions, but decisions that aren’t going to end the world, necessarily. And so often in comics you just have these big moments in it, but you lose some of the character depth, in this run of Hawkeye, you definitely get his depth. The artwork, by David Aja, also lends to this feel as it isn’t as polished and cartoonishly styled as some comic books can be. That’s not to say it is extremely realistic, but it’s a bit more, and mainly it’s just a bit rougher and more muted that lends itself to Clint Barton and Kate Bishop getting beat up. I think, in the one Young Avengers story, in the tpb, that’s something that’s missing. It’s a decent Kate Bishop story, but it has that high gloss and bold look that is common for comic books, so it feels very different than the rest of the book, and even in the more serious moments, it doesn’t carry the same weight, because of the difference in look.

So, is this going to work on the Disney+ streaming show? I think that it could, mainly because, this is a very fed up Clint Barton. He doesn’t have a family, but in Hawkeye, I could easily see him being fed up with being called into missions, and training his replacement so that he doesn’t have to be beat up anymore. And I think that it would lend itself well to vignettes if they didn’t want to do a single over arching story. And it would allow Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton to step off screen for a little while, while still having a Hawkeye/unpowered character on a team of superheroes. Just the different feel is what is going to make it interesting, the narrower scope, if they try and take some of the grittier or leaning into that unpowered feel on a grand story, I don’t think it will work nearly as well.

What are your thoughts on this run if you’ve read it? I personally recommend it, as I think it does some interesting character development, that would work well with the character development we’ve already had in the MCU. And as for the comic, I’m looking forward to reading the second one that I have. I vaguely remember enjoying that one as well, but it’s been a long time since I’ve read them.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, do we have a lot of new Marvel news. I do a quick rundown on 10 Minute Marvel, coming out on Tuesday, but let’s look at what we know is coming out. I will say that speculation content is going to be more apt to show up on 10 Minute Marvel, so please consider giving that a listen. You can find it on Google Play, Libsyn, as well as on this site, and hopefully soon Apple Podcast.

But let’s talk about what we do know thus far. The big thing is that we have all of Phase 4 out there, and that takes us up through the end of 2021. We also know that Kevin Feige has hinted at more coming at possibly the Disney Expo (D23).

Let’s start in May of 2020. We are starting with Black Widow, and there was some footage, which I haven’t found yet. But in that footage, I know that it was Budapest, a couple of fight sequences, including one against Taskmaster. Taskmaster is a mysterious sleeper agent character, if you are wondering, and probably one of the bad guys, though he switches sides at times. Also in this movie, we have Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, and Florence Pugh.

Next, on Disney+ streaming, we have The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. No official date for that yet, but it is slated for Fall of 2020. Remember, next year we are only getting two Marvel movies, but then in 2021 we’ll be back to 3. The main characters are back for this, but did didn’t find out a ton of information.

To wrap up 2020, we have The Eternals. A book written by Neil Gaiman, I have to go back and read it again. But we do know a lot of the cast for Eternals. We have Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Bryan Tyree Henry, Dong-seok Ma, Lia McHugh, and Lauren Ridloff.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is next on the docket. We have some casting for this with Awkwafina cast and Simu Liu playing the lead Shang-Chi. We also have Tony Leung playing the real Mandarin. What does it mean for Iron Man 3? There was actually a Marvel Short where they talked about and said that there was a real Mandarin, and in Iron Man (the original one), we see the Ten Rings.

The next two I’m going to lump together, we start out with WandaVision. We don’t know much about it except that Monica Rambeau is going to be in it. And we also know that it ties into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In Doctor Strange, we are going to have the Scarlet Witch, and it’s going to be a Marvel foray into horror, which I think is really interesting. Again, I have some thoughts on this, but they will be on 10 Minute MarveL (#10MinMarvel).

Then we are getting a Loki show on Disney+ later that year. In Avengers: Endgame we see Loki escape from the first Avengers movie. So what does that mean for him, and where is he going, who knows? But there has been rumors it might be him hopping around time.

After that, we get What If…?. The What if comics have generally taken a classic story and written it differently, like what if the bad guy had won in Age of Ultron. We know that Jeffrey Wright is going to voice the Watcher. The Watcher is an extraterrestrial being/race that watches over the universe (and possibly multi-verse) watching what happens. It sounds like we’ll get actors reprising roles for this Disney+ series. This is slated for the summer of 2021.

Then we have Hawkeye. We know a couple of things, or can infer them, first the logo is similar to Matt Fractions run in the comics. They have also confirmed that we are getting Kate Bishop who takes over as Hawkeye at times.

Finally, wrapping up the Phase 4 announcements, we have Thor: Love and Thunder. What we know about this is that we are getting Lady Thor from Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor run. And that Lady Thor is likely going to be Natalie Portman who will be back in her role as Jane Foster.

Woof, that’s a lot of news. But I got through it. They also announced that Blade will be coming up sometime, and we have an actor to play Blade in Mahershala Ali.

And the last thing that came out of Hall H at San Diego Comic Con, was that Kevin Feige commented that they hadn’t even gotten to Black Panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2, as well as Fantastic Four and Mutants.

There is so much to speculate on, expect this to dominate the news on 10 Minute Marvel, and I might do some episodes about speculation, because we now have a lot to speculate on.

So, what do you think of this Marvel Phase 4 announcement? Is there any show or movie that you are interested in more than the others? For me it’s the WandaVision/Doctor Strange combo, I think that could be something very different for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
