The Isofarian Guard is bigger, box wise, then Frosthaven, so what drew me into this monster of a game?

Let’s face it, some board games, when they show up, are big. They will dominate your YouTube reviews and game plays. Of course, that is if they are what the crowdfunding or prereleases promised. One of those games which is coming for me tomorrow, I believe, is The Isofarian Guard by Sky Kingdom Games. So before it gets here, let’s revisit the hype and why it was worth picking up.

Crowfunding Isofarian Guard

Let’s first off start by talking about the Kickstarter campaign, which I actually didn’t back. Back around when it came to Kickstarter I had just backed a handful of campaign games, and when I say a handful, I mean a small moving truck full. And Isofarian Guard promised another small moving truck full of game. Though, in reality a lot smaller than a lot of those.

But the game itself was one that I was interested in. Rolling Solo had a game play of it to show off how it worked at least in prototype form. And the mechanics looked interesting to me, but I wasn’t blown away by it. The story, however, I knew that I loved the idea of it. So Isofarian Guard stayed on my radar.

The Prototype

Now, this is where it got interesting. I saw the prototype for Isofarian Guard on a video(s) that Quackalope and BoardGameCo did. And man, is there a lot in the game. In fact, there is so much in the game that I went back and looked at it again. Why, because I thought it might be worth it for the price point. And well, I was right.

Size to Cost Ratio

Let’s just talk about the size of this game, because it is huge. It is bigger than Frosthaven, a very big box and game. And it is cheaper. Now, there are elements in which it has less. But weight wise and size wise it is larger than Frosthaven, so Isofarian Guard is huge. In fact, it’s too large to fit in a Kallax cubby which means I’m heaving it to the top of a Kallax or a need to find another solution.

But that doesn’t cover the cost. The game is cheaper than Frosthaven as well. So larger box but cheaper overall. And it is a lot cheaper than more recent campaign games on crowdfunding. Even when I late pledged it after watching the BoardGameCo video, it was cheaper than the campaign games showing up at that time.

So for me, and where I was with what I had backed recently, I got the late pledge. Even if it is not a game that I love, I think mechanically more than story wise, it is a worthwhile investment.

The Mechanisms of Isofarian Guard

So let’s finish up by talking about the mechanisms in the game and then the story. But the mechanisms need to sell me on themselves for the game. Isofarian Guard is a story adventure game that has two parts. The first part is traveling through the lands. Then you go and have story phases, or more story focused phases in settlements. This might sound like another game, Oathsworn.

But the main mechanism that I want to talk about is bag building and pulling out chips for attack, defense, and other abilities. I think that looks interesting, but it didn’t sell me on it. Mainly, it seems simpler to me than a lot of other games. Let’s compare it again to Oathsworn. That has hand management with a cool down track, and a push your luck element. This is build your bag and assign the chips you pull. But I suspect that there is more than that from the taste I got.

The Story

And the story is something that sells me on the game. Again, this is what I remember, because the game has been in production for a while. The world is one where there really isn’t magic, or not much magic. Magic is something of the legends and when a group of the kings finest guard or at least trusted soldiers, become imbued with magic that might end a war, they think that is weird but great.

The king, when they return, he is not a fan. And if I remember again, he is listening to a character that I can best describe as a Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings. Someone who is poisoning the mind of the ruler and leading them into decisions that are not good for their kingdom.

That is a story that I am sold on. It is interesting, offers depth. And does a few things that are unique. In the box is a number of campaigns. But it isn’t like you pick one and play it and then the next one follows along after. I believe that they all happen at the same time as I you play different groups of the guard who split off to complete different objectives from the start of the story. That is a very interesting idea.

Final Thoughts on The Isofarian Guard

Let’s be fair, I late-pledged this game because I love campaign games. But there is another reason as well. While, Isofarian Guard looks like a table hog. It is a solo campaign game. If I couldn’t have played it solo, I wouldn’t have backed it. It is a game that I plan on playing on Malts and Meeples.

Of course, I need to play play other campaign games first. But most likely, not today, but next week I will unbox the game. Show off all the components because, it is a lot and there are some interesting things to look at in the game. I love a campaign game for that. And I want to play it as soon as a can. In fact, it might be the game that I play after ISS Vanguard, we will have to see. I own others like Oathsworn that are high on my list to play as well.

The post Top 10 Crowdfunding Board Games I’m Excited To Get in 2023 first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Alright, this list, unlike yesterdays is a little bit simpler. It’s about the games that I’m going to have coming in from Kickstarter, Gamefound, or nothing from Backerkit yet, but anything I’ve gotten pre-ordered. Too my knowledge all of these should be coming in in 2023, but one that made the list last year, Primal, didn’t come in, nor did Frosthaven, for me. So there’ll be some games that make the list that won’t make it, and others that will be here likely in a week and I could have skipped putting on the list for that reason.

Top 10 Board Games I’m Excited To Get in 2023

10. Fliptown

Now this one is kind of outside the type of game that I tend to back on crowdfunding, but it is one that I’m anticipating. It’s a small roll and write game, or flip and write, where it’s set in the wild west and you are flipping cards and using them in different ways. And that’s what intrigues me so much about it. It’s like Welcome To… in some ways where you use multiple cards each turn. But it offers, what appears to be more options and very interesting options in the game. Plus it looks pretty from what I saw on Kickstarter.

9. HEL: The Last Saga

Hel

I’m not sure where I want to place this one on the list. Mythic Games is going through some rough times financially. And I do believe their commitment to getting this game out, but it’s also late. In terms of the game, though, it’s a cooperative campaign game and a Viking saga. So two things that I like. And I’m confident that I’ll enjoy it when it does come, I just hope that the extra time and struggle turn out a great game and get Mythic Games going strong again. Because I really enjoy the games that Mythic has made.

8. Mythwind

Mythwind

This is one that I have no idea how it will be. But it’s from OOMM Games and I own Stars of Akarios which I love from them. Mythwind is supposed to just be a game that you can keep playing and playing and playing. There is no end, like a Stardew Valley. There might be new stuff that come up and stuff that you can build up, but there’s no hard stop win condition. Will I like a game like that? I don’t know. Will a game like that even work? I don’t know. But I’m hoping it’s a relaxing game to play that I can set-up and just enjoy.

7. RoboMon

RoboMon

I went back and forth on backing this one for a long time before I decided to late pledge it. It’s a solo game that sounds like it should be like Pokemon, but with robots. I never was into Pokemon all that much, came about just a little bit too late for me, and my money was going to baseball cards at that time. RoboMon looks like a nice cooperative game though, and I enjoy the artwork. I hope that it’s a simple campaign game that I can mess around with and show off. And if it’s that, and I can get some good fun out of it, I’ll be excited for that, because I want more smaller solo games.

6. Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread

Arydia

I late pledged this one as well, and this is not a small game. But it is a game that does something that I find really intriguing. It has you play the game at a few different levels. Oh, I should say, epic, big campaign game. But you do one level that’s a country, let’s say, then dive down into moving around in a city, and then dive down into street tactical combat.

All of that in the same game, and I’m excited to see how that works and how easy it is to play it. I’m worried it might end up like Chronicles of Drunagor, a game I love, but that is harder to table. But Arydia seems to have a ton of cool ideas.

5. 20 Strong

20 Strong

A solo game from Chip Theory Games, I’m interested. I’ve enjoyed the Chip Theory stuff I’ve played a lot. And 20 Strong is a whole new setting, so I’m curious about what that will look like. Plus it’s a whole new game system, it uses dice and has a chip, but it’s not like Too Many Bones. And it is only meant to be played solo as well as meant to be a much smaller game and easier to get to the table than a lot of their big ones. Plus they’ve done games in a new setting, space setting, plus versions with two of their existing settings as well.

4. The Isofarian Guard

Isofarian Guard

Another solo campaign game. You might see a theme that a lot of these games can be played solo and are campaigns. Isofarian Guard is one that’s been on my radar for a long time since I watched a Rolling Solo preview for it and I didn’t back it then. I did late pledge it as BoardGameCo and Quackalope did some coverage. I saw that it was still what had intrigued me, this story element and bag building, all at a price that is insanely low for everything in there now.

That price point got me, plus it’s so much story and in a world that looks like it has so much development. It was so cheap to buy and late pledge that I wouldn’t even complain if they came back asking for more. I hope they don’t, but it’d be reasonable. I’m excited to see what the game is in the end.

3. Vampire the Masquerade: CHAPTERS

Vampire the Masquerade Chapters by Flyos Games

Another one that I can blame Quackalope for. This is a massive choose your own adventure game set in a world where there are vampires and they try and influence from the shadows. There are a ton of chapters and story to this game. The whole setting sounds great to me, and I like that it’s not just vampires sucking blood and violence. Instead, this game has combat that you can get down to, but also has a lot of interactions and story behind it.

Is it another big campaign game that I can play solo, yes it is, but I hope it’s one that stands out from the crowd, and everything I’ve seen says that it should. And I hope that all the work they’ve put into the story, as there is a lot of story, turns out an amazing game.

2. Sleeping Gods: Distant Skies

Sleeping Gods Distant Skies

I love Sleeping Gods. I get rules wrong in my playthrough, but I still just love the game. In fact, I’d play it the way that I did, it makes it easier, but you get to experience so much story in the game. And Sleeping Gods: Distant Skies takes that system an iterates on it. I’m curious to see how the combat changes up in it.

And I know it fixes or not really fixes, but matches one thing that I did. You keep cards when you hit those big story points, it didn’t thematically make sense to lose them, so I’m glad that has changed. Another solo adventure game, or multiplayer, but this time without that big campaign element to it.

1. Frosthaven

Frosthaven

Finally, yes, it’s probably coming in a month or less, I have Frosthaven. The big sequel to Gloomhaven that adds a little bit, a town phase, and then it’s just Gloomhaven combat. From what I’ve heard and know about it, it’s even bigger, the story sounds better, and there are more elements to the game. Will it be too much, probably and probably not, and I’ll enjoy every minute of it. So yes, I’m very excited to wrap up my current campaign game and then get to Frosthaven.

But What About…

There are a number of games that I wanted to put on this list. Tainted Grail: Kings of Ruin, Primal: The Awakening, Unsettled, The Witcher: Old World, Divinus, 7th Citadel, and Astro Knights just to name a few. If I’ve got it pre-ordered or backed right now, I expect almost all of them to show up in 2023. And, well, I could have just ranked them all, but it was fun to pick out 10 that I’m very excited for, for various reasons. And I’m sure when a lot of them come in, you’ll see them on Malts and Meeples.

What backed game do you have, or pre-ordered, that you can’t wait to have come in?

The Game – Elden Ring: The Board Game

This section is going to be a little bit light. Mainly because there are a lot of videos out there on this game that are probably just better to checkout. But the basics are that this is a campaign game with each session being two parts (or every other session). But there is a part where you explore, possibly to find a boss or some bigger quest part. And then there is a boss battle. How those work, you can checkout the videos from Quackalope and BoardGameCo below.

What Doesn’t Work?

Let’s, as always, start about what doesn’t work for this game. And unfortunately one of the big things is the company that is doing it. Not that they don’t turn out fun games, they do, and from watching this game play, I think it’s the most fun of a game play that I’ve watched. So I appreciate that, but from a crowdfunding side of things, they are hard campaigns to back.

The base game level pledge doesn’t get stretch goals. So if you’re just looking at that, it’s not worth backing, grab it likely cheaper, after factoring in shipping at retail. The next level up is probably the best deal but it’s notably more expensive. And then the all in, while it might hold it’s value, is now extremely expensive.

I also do wonder about the replayability. The game is a campaign game with about 20 hours, they say 20+ in the core box. That isn’t bad, but for a campaign it’s not that long. And price point isn’t the issue here, it’s that 20 hours is something I can sit down and stream, but if it’s fun, would I want to play it again. The story, at least in the introductory scenario, which might be just that, doesn’t offer that many choices. It’s more a random exploration and then a boss fight.

What Works?

Now, to go back on what I said in some ways, I think both the exploration and boss fight look fun. Mainly because players can get into mini fights with creatures in the world during the game. And the fighting system, I think that looks really intriguing. It’s about positioning yourself so that you don’t take too much damage but can be in there and get damage. And I like that you can change your stance from aggressive to more defensive so there is good strategy in that.

Plus I like that the boss fight isn’t that much different, it’s just everyone versus the boss with the boss scaling on how much health it has. And the bosses lair, for lack of a better term, is just a bigger version of what you are fighting on. I think that works really well because you don’t need to learn a new system for the boss battle or lose the strategic decision making points for the smaller battles.

I also want to mention the minis in this game. Because Steamforged definitely does really good minis. And this doesn’t seem to be any different. So for a fan of the game and a fan of campaign games with minis, I think you’ll enjoy painting them a lot. And even for someone like myself who doesn’t paint minis, I like the looks of them a lot for this game.

Finally, I like that in exploration there is a timer. You need to complete everything by a certain amount of turns, or basically turns that you aren’t doing anything to progress quests or fighting a monster. If you can progress, then time isn’t ticking down. But otherwise, a turn of just exploring new locations, that is going to get you closer to losing the game.

Who Is It For?

I think this is for that medium weight board gamer to play with their friends who are video gamers. Maybe you got through all of Elden Ring and now you want to play something else but there isn’t a new video game out, well, this might work for you.

As for heavier or campaign board gamers, like myself, I think it’s one that we’ll enjoy. The exploration phase might be a bit simple. But the combat definitely looks like it offers a good challenge. And there are boss battlers out there already, but this might have an easier theme to sell.

Back or Brick – Elden Ring: The Board Game

This is a tough one for me. I really do think that the game looks interesting for Elden Ring, and it is a theme and world that I want to explore more, both in the video game and with this board game. But right now, this is a Brick for me. Might I regret it, I think that I might. Might I back it still, it is possible, but there is one big reason it’s a brick right now.

And that’s the pricing model. For a base pledge of something like a CMON Zombicide Game, you get the base game and all the stretch goals. From Steamforged, you need to pledge up a level to get the same amount of things. So do I want to back for $90 + shipping and not get stretch goals. Or do I want to back for $180 + shipping and get stretch goals and not that much extra. It’s a huge jump. So I am more apt to just wait for retail on the base box and probably get it for $90 or $100, and if it’s $100, I get free shipping. They really want you to play higher up.

I like at 10 that likely will or have a solid shot anyways.

The post Crowdfunding Coming To Your Door In 2022 first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
I do this at the end of the year, I put together a list of Crowdfunding games that I was excited to have show up in 2022. And well, I doubt that some of them will make it. But as we get to the middle of the year, I know more of what is going to be coming. There is still some question for some games, I’d say, if they make it this year that talk about it. Those generally are talking about late Q4 shipping. I expect most will be showing up in 2023 in that case. But let’s go see which ones I think will be coming still this year.

Oathsworn

This is for sure coming this year. Mainly, it is almost here. Some content creators, Quackalope and BoardGameCo to name a few are already doing some content on it. And I am excited. Now, I didn’t get everything like they did, I just got the core box. But that looks like more than enough content.

This is one of my most anticipated crowdfunding games for a while, though. Mainly because it’s something different than what I own. I own a lot of dungeon crawl games and story driven games. This is a game that has that story, but it is about that one boss monster fight. It gets compared to something like Kingdom: Death Monster (KDM) in that boss battler type of thing. But I don’t need to put together minis and it didn’t cost me $500+.

Spire’s End: Hildegard

This is one that I’m surprised how fast it is coming. Granted, it is just cards and a few dice. But still, it is a lot of story and a lot of cards. Spire’s End: Hildegard is going to be a story driven game for one or two players. Spire’s End is a weird dark world that you go through. I don’t know if Hildegard will be as dark, but I’m curious. Plus I just adore the artwork in this game. I would love to see this artwork and art style used in other games as well.

Tiny Turbo Cars

Tiny Turbo Cars

This is another one that I believe it is getting close. Tiny Turbo Cars just locked it’s shipping addresses. To me, that says that the game is getting ready to leave China and they want to know their numbers. I’ve been anticipating this one for a while, I believe it is a game that I backed in early 2020 and I am still really excited for it from Horrible Guild.

Tiny Turbo Cars is basically an RC car racing game. To move your car there is a sliding puzzle game that you do as fast as you can. But it’s not really a time element. The first person to finish theirs ends up moving first, so you are less likely to have another car blocking you. But if you go later, you might be able to shoot another car as well. It really looks like a silly fun game.

ISS Vanguard

I do think that it will show up this year, but I fully expect it to be close. ISS Vanguard is in production now and it isn’t a small game to get produced. So I wonder if it might take a bit for it to find it’s way onto boats and come around Christmas. Not that I would complain about getting ISS Vanguard for Christmas.

This is a big sci-fi adventure game. You are the crew of the ISS Vanguard who follow the clues of a signal from space to a mysterious location. As players you are trying to unravel that mystery. As well as maintain your ship, research and keep crew happy. And then there are the missions down to the planet as well. Another game that is long in production but I have extremely high hopes for it.

Grove

A small box game, follow-up to a solo game that I really like in Orchard. Grove, I believe, is shipping now, which has me excited. It has been a bit since I played Orchard but it is always fun when I do. Grove promises to add in a bit more. Yes, you still layer cards. But you now can layer with blank spaces that clear a spot for you but also potentially clear dice which are points. It’s an interesting twist.

And then on the back of the cards I believe that there are scoring objectives. So it isn’t just like Orchard where you layer the cards to get as many points as you can. I don’t know how that piece will go, but I’m curious to get my hands on this one. The only downside is with two kittens I can’t play this while watching TV like I did with Orchard.

Chronicles of Drunagor

Chronicles of Drunagor

I got in on the second crowdfunding campaign of the Chronicles of Drunagor, Age of Darkness Apocalypse expansion or stand alone base game. Now, that part is not coming yet. But Chronicles of Drunagor, I believe, from the last update, is getting close. Or at least to do the two wave shipping that is locked in place now.

This is going to be a dungeon crawl game with narrative elements as well. From what I understand, even for the base game, they beefed up the narrative elements. But what really caught my eye for this game is how you activate. Each character is limited to certain abilities that they have. And to activate them you use a colored cube that corresponds to the ability. But you only have a few cubes of a color. So it limits you as you play. Then you can pull back cubes, but at the cost of covering up an ability that you need to heal to get access to again.

Dice Throne: Santa vs Krampus

I won’t talk too much about Dice Throne. I wrote two articles on it yesterday including a Back or Brick for Santa vs Krampus. Dice Throne is my number 2 game of all time, as of 2021. And I want more content. I like how easy it is to add more to this game without making it harder to play. Their goal is Christmas for this, but again, shipping around then could be tricky.

Alba

This is a bit different than a lot of them. Alba is a game but it’s a game in a book. So almost a puzzle book of sorts. I backed it because the story sounded cool. Right now I believe they are trying to nail down a printer for it. The one that they were contracted with is either in lockdown or was in lockdown to delayed this. But it is a book, I expect it won’t take as much time to print as a lot of board games will. I’m very intrigued to get this one in my hands.

Hanamikoji: Geisha’s Road

This is another one that might not be too far out. I know that shipping is an issue for this game. It is at times cheaper for them to fly some of it over than to get containers for all of it. That is a bit crazy to me, but it is the state that we live in right now.

Hanamikoji: Geisha’s Road is going to be a new version of the two player game Hanamikoji or a spin on it. Now there is an area control sort of element to it as well. You want to win favor of Geisha but also get them to certain establishments to gain people. It is interesting, I am a bit worried it might take a simple and thinky game and add too much, but we will see.

Etherfields

Etherfields

Another one that is coming soon. I believe that the wave 2 shipping should be happening soon. What I am getting with Eitherfields, I don’t remember anymore. I didn’t go all in on it like I did with ISS Vanguard or all in game play like I did with Tainted Grail. So it’ll be a fun surprise for me.

Ehterfields is going to be a dungeon crawl loose story driven game in a world of dreams. What I like about it or what I’ve heard about it, is that the dreams you go through are so different. They mess around with the mechanics of the game to make the different dreams feel unique. And the one thing I don’t mind about getting it in wave 2 is that they fixed the rule book, or improved it. And they added a mode to the game, now in the rules that people seem to like better.

Frosthaven

Finally, Frosthaven. This is one that should be here this year. Right now it is printing, and I expect it will take a while for the whole thing to print. Still, if it is printing now, then assembling it. I’d guess that it’ll get on a boat late August or maybe early September.

I am so excited for Frosthaven to come in. We are reaching the end of the Tainted Grail stuff that is out so far. And Frosthaven maybe can line up to be our campaign game after that. Plus it is just more Gloomhaven, but Gloomhaven with more going on. The loot makes more sense, you get stuff not money, and the whole town building piece is so cool. I can not wait to get this in my hands.

Final Thoughts

It is going to be a busy year for Kickstarters and Gamefound campaigns coming in. And I would not be surprised if a game or two more snuck into the latter part of the year. I also expect that one or two of these will show up in 2023. And that is okay, right now it’s more just anticipation of games to come.

There are some that I am very confident won’t show up this year. Middara Acts 2 & 3, though the pledge manager is closing soon. I suspect that’ll be Q1 of 2023, though they are pushing for this year. 7th Citadel and Primal, both with updates make me think 2023, at least for sure for Primal. And maybe 2024 for 7th Citadel. it is annoying to wait on games, but I’d prefer a great game than a rushed okay game. And Village Attacks, I got no clue, no updates and no concrete plans in the last one. I hope it isn’t just a loss at this point. Though they did just deliver, or are delivering their other game.

What crowdfunding game do you anticipate showing up at your door this year?

The post Junes Anticipated Crowdfunding Games first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
I skipped May, I know, and we’re already a week into June. But Crowdfunding has been slowly lately. In May the biggest game, maybe, was Castles of Burgundy Deluxe, a game that didn’t really interest me. Even the print and play roll and writes were trying up. A lot of this is coming from the fact that everything, well, not print and plays, are more expensive right now. If you need to ship anything, it’ll cost an arm and a leg. And creators don’t want to estimate one amount and then realize it is more.

This happened to CMON who had to raise their shipping costs a lot. Granted, probably could have done better to start. But shipping a massive game like Marvel Zombies is exceedingly expensive. And then Oathsworn, they put in $100,000 of their own and still needed people to help offset the shipping costs. Thankfully, the community came around them, and besides the shipping cost offset people have donated probably around $60-70k to them, so they don’t need to spend as much of their own money.

All of that is to say, Kickstarter and Gamefound have been a bit slower. But I came up with 5 that I’m at least a little interested in. Though most are only on the “might” be on Crowdfunding in June.

June 2022 Crowdfunding

5. Cyberpunk 2077

CMON just released a trailer for this. Based off of the video game and more so off of the RPG, this is going to be a Cyberpunk board game in both senses of it. The game looks intriguing but I need to see more. Generally Quackalope gets the game to show off for CMON, but that hasn’t happened yet.

And for me, I am interested in Cyberpunk, it is a theme for board game, video game, and RPG that I am interested in. But it is another CMON game. I need to be careful with those campaigns. And I found, for example, with Massive Darkness, even though retail might cost a little bit more than on Kickstarter, and you get a little less, overall I saved myself money.

4. Aeon’s End: Past & Future

Plus, if Aeon’s End: Past & Future comes out, I’ll be getting that for sure. And I might even finally add on the cards so that I can keep all the characters set-up always. But this is the next installment in Aeon’s End. The past legacy game wrapped up the story arc that they were going through, so this is, I believe, a bridging story or bridging nemesis to connect what has happened, and wrap that up, kind of a third act, and then going for future.

3. Umbrella Academy

I don’t know much about this one. I think it might be a relaunch of a game that came out and then didn’t do that well on Kickstarter so they are coming back? Mainly I am interested because of the theme. Umbrella Academy is a solid comic book, and a better show. However, it isn’t my favorite show or comic, so I’m curious about it. But I suspect that Umbrella Academy won’t be for me.

2. Drop Bears

Next up we have Drop Bears, and this is the last of them that might be coming out in June. It could easily be later. If you are not familiar with Drop Bears, they are an Australian legend about bears that live in trees and then drop on you. Which, that is goofy and fun, and is a horror theme for a game. I like horror themed board games, so I want to know how this plays. Could be some goofy fun.

1. Runescape Kingdoms

And finally, the only that for sure will be in June. Mainly because it is live right now, though might have gone live at the end of May, like May 31st. This is based off of Runescape and that world. The game itself hasn’t intrigued me that much, and I’ve looked at it. I have no plans to back it. But because of the theme, I was curious about it. I think that it might be a good game, but one that isn’t for me as I’m being very picking on Kickstarters right now.

Final Thoughts

Normally I’d expect Kickstarter to start ramping up again about now. With Gen Con two months away. Origins I believe this weekend. UKGE having happened the past weekend. It is a chance for Kickstarter creators to get their games out in front of people and time it up with the launch. But that isn’t happening right now.

Like I said, it has a ton to do with inflation, shipping, and generally prices on everything. Until stuff becomes a bit more stable, it’s really hard for companies to produce games. Or they have to switch so that they are getting a game on crowdfunding that is immediately ready to be produced so things are as accurate as possible. I hope by the end of the year that things will start to stabilize again. But I suspect that 2022 is going to be fairly slow on Kickstarter and Gamefound.

What are you anticipating that is coming to Crowdfunding in June?

What I’ve Backed on Crowdfunding https://nerdologists.com/2022/05/what-ive-backed-on-crowdfunding/ https://nerdologists.com/2022/05/what-ive-backed-on-crowdfunding/#comments Thu, 12 May 2022 13:00:10 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=6996 What games have I backed on Crowdfunding, or projects in general. I go through my history to see how my taste in games has changed.

The post What I’ve Backed on Crowdfunding first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
So last night I started a stream, thinking it’d take one time, to get through everything that I’ve backed on crowdfunding. Turns out there are a few more older things than I thought. Plus there was chatting, and a tornado warning and severe thunderstorm that rolled through that distracted some of the conversation. But if you want to watch part 1, you can do that now, I’ll be back next Monday to wrap it up.

Why Go Through This Crowdfunding?

I think that it is interesting, every now and again to look back at what I’ve backed. And there are a number of games out there. But the interest is often tied to how my gaming tastes have changed. What did I back on Kickstarter when I started in 2014 and what am I backing now.

It provides an interesting opportunity to see that growth. Normally, you get a game and it leaves and there is no way to track it. I could go through Amazon, CoolStuffInc, and Miniature Market Purchases, but a lot of those are more recent. Kickstarter and now Gamefound give you a history of what you’ve backed over that longer period of time.

Plus Jesse from Quackalope went through his backing history, shorter, but larger than mine, with Devon from Devon Talks Tabletop. He had something like 225 games to go through and that’s almost a five hour video. I should have known that mine would take longer than it did. I thought probably two hours would be enough, it is not.

The Drink

Last nights drink was a Negroni. Back to a classic for me. I really like the flavor and it is a good summer drink. With how large I made it, I wish I’d started streaming and sipping on it sooner, but the flavor is always good. It’s also a nice mixed drink to make because it’s a 1 to 1 to 1 ratio with gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari.

Upcoming Streams

So, clearly I have some more to talk about here with Kickstarter and Gamefound. My hope is that it’ll be about an hour and a half to finish up with no thunderstorms. So that is going to be on Monday at 8:30. Then on Wednesday, I plan on playing some more Paper Dungeons. Like I said, I want to get through that campaign. While I am working on an idea for a bigger game in the roll and write campaign space, you can see my Designer Diary here, I want to finish off the one that I already have.

Crowdfunding Conundrum – What Are We Owed? https://nerdologists.com/2022/05/crowdfunding-conundrum-what-are-we-owed/ https://nerdologists.com/2022/05/crowdfunding-conundrum-what-are-we-owed/#respond Wed, 04 May 2022 14:04:13 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=6977 What, as an investor in a crowdfunding project am I owed? Going off of a video from Quackalope, I put in my two cents worth on what I expect.

The post Crowdfunding Conundrum – What Are We Owed? first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
To take one last stab at the big debates going on with changing shipping costs, massive delays, and generally prices going up on Crowdfunding platforms because of what. What are we, as a consumer or investor owed by the company? Do they need to keep exactly what they promised, or is that unreasonable to expect?

Are We Consumers or Investors in Crowdfunding?

I think this is the starting point of the conversation. Because, I believe that what we should expect is different between the two and often people don’t consider that. When I say people, I mean both backers and the project creators themselves.

According to Kickstarter, and I believe Gamefound as well, we are investors in the project. This is important to note because it does not mean that we deserve anything more than the project creators best attempt to turn out a product. If they fail, well, our investment failed and we don’t have recourse.

On the flip side, a lot of backers and project creators, treat the backing as being a consumer only. If we are consumers only, we deserve a refund if they can’t fulfill. We pre-order something and we should have the ability to cancel a pre-order if we decide that we want the newer shinier thing.

However, by the letter of the law, crowdfunding has us not as consumers, though we will – most likely – get a product at the end. We are investors in what the company is doing, whether it is a bigger company like CMON or a small company that’s launching their first game ever. By that, they do not owe us a product.

What Are We Owed Then?

This is interesting, because by the nature of investing, we aren’t really owed the product. The project creator is promising us one, but we aren’t owed it. And we might need to pay in more for our investment to get that return, the game, from it. And that is kind of lame. I want to get my product, so you do. Thankfully most board game projects deliver, albeit maybe late or costing more.

However, since we invest in the game and the project, we should expect some things. Mainly, I expect good communication on the status of the project. Jesse from Quackalope did a very good video covering this.

But I want to talk about it more as well. Because I expect good communication. And I think what that means can vary from person to person. And for a project creator, it might not seem that people are reading your updates. Here’s a secret, most people aren’t and that is a good thing.

Communication

I expect consistent communication once the project is done. Let’s make it simple, pick a day of the month, the 1st, last day, 15th, whatever day you want, and give me an update that day. Even if it’s just a thank you for backing message with a little of an update on development, that’s great. In particular, a thank you and some pictures, I will love that.

What I don’t want is no message for four months. Then a short message, maybe a picture, and letting me know that shipping has doubled. I want to know shipping has doubled, but that shouldn’t be the only reason for sending me a message. If shipping is doubled, I want you to link to an article about the shipping crisis. And I want to know what if anything I need to do about it. But I also want the benign updates that things are progressing.

But People Aren’t Reading My Content

Now, that is just fine that they aren’t. I know it might seem wrong but you don’t want people reading them, you just want people getting them. If people are getting an update, they will see the e-mail or notification for it. Then they will know that things are progressing and skip what you wrote. Sending out the communication is about what it says, for some people, but also to reassure people you are still working on the game.

If you send updates sporadically now people will assume either production is starting, shipping is starting, or something has gone wrong. And people will read those and be primed to be frustrated when something is going wrong. Also, more people read it and more people are frustrated. If you put it out normally, even if announcing a delay, people feel like you are staying on top of it.

But I Don’t Have Much to Say

Again, that is fine. I invest in your project because I like the idea of it. But also, I invest in your project and your company. The point of the message is to keep your investors happy. And you want to keep two groups happy. First is the group that always complains, it’s a loud but small group. The second, also small, is the group who will defend you.

If you don’t send messages, you lose that second group. I am willing to go to bat for you and for my investment, because I invested in you, if you keep me informed. Instead of that, I will be critical of you if you do not send consistent messages. For example, I still kind of defend Grimlord Games, I understand it is not their fulltime job. But they do not send consistent updates, they are well delayed at this point. My willingness to defend them is reduced because they do not communicate.

On the flip side, when Nemesis Games sent out a message asking for more support for shipping, I will defend them. I understand that shipping is crazy, and because they communicate now I am willing to give them more grace. Same with Creative Game Studio. Even though they ran into issues with shipping and how things are being charged, they keep communicating.

So Is There More?

Honestly, it is all about communication. If you show that you are being responsible with my investment, setting aside money, building in margin, and communicating success and struggles that I need to know, I don’t need to know all of them. I feel like my investment is in good hands.

Yes, behind the scenes, you need to know what you are getting into. And I expect that before going into your crowdfunding project that you have a plan. If you don’t, if you don’t have plans for shipping, for production, if you don’t have estimates, you aren’t ready. And as Quackalope talks about, it is hard to make money on a first Kickstarter or Gamefound campaign. So plan contingency money, plan not for everything that goes wrong, but plan to communicate when it does.

It is important to keep it moving forward, and it is important to keep communicating. It might feel like added work, something you don’t want to stop work on the game for. But just a two paragraph message with a picture of playtesting, or an update that says what you are working on. I keep on harping on it, but that is what I expect as an investor.

Finally, yes, I expect to get a product at the end. And whenever that end might be. But if for some reason that can’t happen, I expect to know why. And if it is because everything costs 2000% more than when you ran your campaign, I will try and understand. It sucks, but things happen, and I want to be understanding, but that means I need to know through the process. And hopefully, eventually, I receive that product.

What do you expect from a crowdfunding campaign? Do you see yourself as a consumer or investor?

Regrets in Board Gaming https://nerdologists.com/2022/03/regrets-in-board-gaming/ https://nerdologists.com/2022/03/regrets-in-board-gaming/#respond Tue, 22 Mar 2022 15:21:26 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=6825 There's a lot to love about board gaming, but what are some things that I regret doing, or not doing, in the board gaming hobby?

The post Regrets in Board Gaming first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
So, on the Tablenauts Discord (a great YouTube channel and fun and active discord) they do a question of the day. Anyone can ask it, so today I asked about regrets in board gaming. In particular games that people regretted not getting or a game that someone regretted getting. But let’s talk about some regrets, both in games I did and didn’t get and why. And if I’ll track down some games that I regret not getting.

Not Going To GenCon Before 2019

I’ve only been to GenCon once in 2019, though I guess I did the digital version 2021. And while the digital was fun, I’m really looking forward to getting back to GenCon this year. Even if the year isn’t fully normal. It is just such a good board gaming experience. And while I don’t need to get every game, I am excited to see new games always.

Not Backing Vampire The Masquerade – CHAPTERS

This is probably my biggest regret in terms of a game that I didn’t back. Mainly because I didn’t look into it that much. I saw Vampire the Masquerade and moved on from it. But the game looks amazing. Quackalope has a great playthrough of a scenario and it makes me want it even more. I like the choose your own adventure elements then going down to the table level to fight monsters and interact with things. Just great looking campaign that I really want for the game and story.

Backing Zombicide: Undead or Alive

This one I am still very excited for Zombicide: Undead or Alive. I love weird west as a theme, which I talked about on last nights stream. And there aren’t that many weird west games out there, to add in zombies to the mix, and I’m interested. Why I’m regretting it is that Marvel Zombies is a thing. And a thing and theme that I like better. Plus, in Marvel Zombies you can play as zombies or as heroes. There is a decent chance that I will just trade or sell my pledge when it comes in.

Buying Scythe

This one is interesting, I’d guess for some people, because people love Scythe. And I very well might love Scythe, when I play my friends copy. I picked it up and I never played my copy and it wasn’t high on my list of games to learn. So I got rid of it, and I’m fine with that, because I know people who have it. It’s just one that I probably wouldn’t have bought in the first place.

Backing Satanic Panic

Now, this is probably the only Kickstarter that I backed which will never fulfill. The guy who is running it showed back up again for a little bit in the fall but then disappeared yet again. Satanic Panic is a role playing game that basically is a D&D style system, if I remember correctly, set in the 80’s during the Satanic Panic that happened. So it’s a fun idea, but it was a game I supported for the creator, and needless to say I’m not pleased. Nor do I ever expect to see a finished product. At least I didn’t back it for a physical book.

Etherfields

Doing Single Wave Shipping on Etherfields

This one I do regret, but only a little bit. I’m not sure how much Etherfields I’d have played to this point. Etherfields is a big Awaken Realms game where you explore through dreams. That sounds amazing, and I’m really excited to get it, but another campaign game. So it might be better that I waited on it until it was all coming at once. Still, the game looks really cool, and the endless slumber mode, I think that’s what it’s called looks great.

Backing Village Attacks

This is another one where I kind of regret it, and I kind of don’t regret it. I mainly regret it because it’s well delayed at this point. It is a game that I really like. Village Attacks is a great tower defense where you play the bad guys dealing with the villagers. The game is a lot of fun, but man, the game is delayed. And not only is it delayed, the communication is really lacking. I knew it’d be the case, the longer it goes, the more frustrating.

Final Thoughts on Board Gaming Regrets

I honesty feel like that isn’t too many. Now, a number of the early games I backed on Kickstarter, I have moved on from those. But I don’t feel bad about backing then. Eduardo Baraf and Pencil First Games is a great company and makes fun games now, Planet Lift Off, that was even a fun game. But I moved on from it as the first one I backed.

I also don’t regret backing so many big campaign games. I have toned that down some, but there’s always something new and cool out there to checkout. So now I’m being more discerning. But backing Chronicles of Drunagor, ISS Vanguard, Frosthaven, Isofarian Guard, and more, I don’t regret that at all. I will eventually play those games, and that is exciting to me.

What is something you regret passing or getting in the board gaming hobby?

Crowdfunding I Wish I’d Backed https://nerdologists.com/2022/01/crowdfunding-i-wish-id-backed/ https://nerdologists.com/2022/01/crowdfunding-i-wish-id-backed/#respond Thu, 06 Jan 2022 16:30:36 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=6553 Has there been a crowdfunding game that you wish you'd backed when it came out? I come up with a list of some I wish I'd backed.

The post Crowdfunding I Wish I’d Backed first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Every year there are so many games that come to crowdfunding that you can’t back them all. Even if you can, you probably shouldn’t back them all. But I thought it’d be interesting to talk about some board games that I wish that I’d backed on crowdfunding. Now this is mainly going to be from Kickstarter, not Gamefound, because a lot of the games, maybe all of them, haven’t yet delivered from Gamefound. This makes sense because Gamefound only came around late 2020 with ISS Vanguard then and a year of campaigns since then.

Crowdfunding Games I Wish I’d Backed

I don’t have too many requirements for what can go on the list. The one that I do have is that the game is out, or at least production copies are close, there is one exception to my list, I think. But generally the game needs to be out. I missed these games and now I wish I had them because the game looks good. There are some games, Arkeis, for example, that I really am interested in, and I wish I’d backed it, but I don’t know enough about it still to say for sure.

Also this is a fairly long list, though some will surprise you on the list. You’ll have to see what they are, but let’s get into the list.

Final Girl

This one is going to be an interesting one, because I am going to back it. But I just said I’m sad that I missed it. I am because now we are onto season two. So that probably means that I’ll be getting more for the game, and clearly I need even more of a game that I already don’t own.

Final Girl is kind of what it sounds like. You are the trope of the final girl in the horror movie. Can you survive the serial killer and escape? Can you rescue others, or will you truly be the last one standing? I love that theme, especially since those Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th type of movies are my favorite for horror movies. This one I don’t know why I passed it by the first time, I won’t this time.

Unsettled

Unsettled

Another one that is coming back to crowdfunding, I believe Kickstarter. This is a planet exploration puzzle. It reminds me, in some ways of TIME Stories, but in space instead of this weird time travel mechanism for the game. So it’s modules that you explore to try and complete objectives. The game sounds really cool.

They are coming back to Kickstarter so that they can drop some more planets into the game. That is something that is great about this game and system, that I can tell, they’ll always be able to add in more planets. And from what the reviews have said, this has some really good writing with it as well. So while not a big campaign game like ISS Vanguard which I did back, this is going to give me a lot of planets to explore as well.

Solomon Kane

Now, this isn’t my exception, but you can watch on Malts and Meeples me unboxing Solomon Kane. Well, that’s because I bought it on eBay. I wish that I’d backed this on Kickstarter. I think that Mythic Games brought it to Kickstarter when I wasn’t checking as much. And by the time I heard about it, I think it was too late, or I didn’t know about the late pledging of things.

This is one that I still need to dive into my copy of it. It was an option to stream when we chose Sleeping Gods instead. And it is very possible that I will stream it later this year. Because, while it is kind of a campaign, it is shorter stories that are campaigns. That is similar to how Roll Player Adventures is doing their campaigns as well. I like that because it means that I am not signing up for 100 hours of game play.

Vampire the Masquerade – CHAPTERS

Here’s the cheater one, this one isn’t out yet. So why is it on the list, because Quackalope has a very polished looking almost production copy that I’ve watched played. I’ll add the video below. But the game looks right up my alley. It has tactical elements for combat where you need to think about positioning. But it is so much more about story, and I love a good story in a game.

Not to mention that the whole world of Vampire: The Masquerade sounds interesting to me. This world of vampires, but not vampires who are ripping peoples necks out. This is about the intrigue and codes that they have, and being subtle about the hunger and when and how you get your blood. And the different clans and how they interact amongst each other in a struggle for power.

Maximum Apocalypse

This is an interesting one because I’ve again, had a chance to get it. And not just a chance, two chances, and then there is more of a campaign version of Maximum Apocalypse as well that I could have gotten. So why do I regret not getting it, but also haven’t pulled the trigger? This is a survival post apocalyptic sort of game, or during the apocalypse. And it’s done with random tiles that you are searching and different objectives to complete. Plus you have a lot of different apocalypses you can play in.

So theme is great for me. Game play looks like a lot of fun. It just hasn’t caught my attention quite enough. And now, and this is a bad reason, there is a lot of it. And I’m going to want to own all of it. That is a bad reason not to get it. I can get a little bit and if I love it I can get more. I do that often with games. But this one, stuff like the Kaiju expansion I really want, but isn’t part of the base box. So I haven’t bitten on it, yet.

Mars Open

You’re going to see a lot of big games on the list. We know what I like my big campaign games, but this is a small game. And I don’t actually remember what kept me from backing this one. And I keep on looking at it on eBay thinking I should pick it up. Mars Open is a dexterity game, basically paper football flicking, but instead of football, it’s golf. And you are play some holes and low score wins.

That game sounds hilarious to play. I have to imagine that I’d be bad at it, but I’m okay with that because it’ll be a good end of game night game. It reminds me of PitchCar as a game where when someone has a crazy good shot, everyone is going to be excited for them.

Horizon Zero Dawn

This one I’m glad I didn’t back, but I also wish I had. The minis in the game are amazing. And the core box has a lot of cool things. but it has a limited number of things. I likely would only have backed the core, and while people seem to like the game, the general consensus is that you need more. The base box gives you a good gaming experience, but not enough to come back to and feel like it’s different.

That said, there isn’t only the base box, there is a lot more. And if you went all in on everything, there is going to be a ton that you can play. Plus the theme, I love the theme. I haven’t beaten Horizon Zero Dawn, but I need to get back to that game. Honestly, too many video games to get through right now. But in terms of setting this is one of the coolest.

Graphic Novel Adventures

From Van Ryder Games, these are basically mini choose your own adventure in graphic novel form. But they are more than that, it’s not just flip through and read stuff, you have a character and you have stats. That is going to determine how well some things go for you. And they put so many themes into the different graphic novels. Pirates, Sherlock Holmes, and werewolves just to name a few. And I own one, which I really need to play. If I love it, they seem to do more every few years, so I can get another one. I really need to play mine.

Sea of Legends

Sea of Legends

Another one that is coming back to Kickstarter soon, or maybe Gamefound, I’m not sure. Sea of Legends is a pirate game with app assistance. To me, this looks like it’ll be similar to Merchants and Marauders, a game I like but don’t love, and then add more story into it. In Merchants and Marauders there isn’t story, it’s what you bring to the game. And while the theme is solid, I like games that have story.

Sea of Legends did start out rough with an app that was bad, issues with the rule book, and generally felt like Guildhall sent it out before they polished it. I think that there are still issues with the rule book, but the app seems to be better. And it has a whole idea, that you pick out three different things, I forget what they all are, and enter them into the app and that drives your story. So you can change them up and the story is going to change as well.

This is one that I’m probably going to either grabbed use, my FLGS has had a copy, or back when it comes back. Pirates are a theme that I love, and a generally open world game with story, I like that too. I mean, you can see me now playing Sleeping Gods, a game that I almost put on this list. I own it now, and I like it.

Wild Ascent

This is kind of a Monster Hunter style board game. Or a boss battler game, where you have a village phase and then fight a monster. Kingdom Death Monster might be the one that popularized the genre. KDM (Kingdom Death Monster) is one that didn’t make the list, but was close. I want it, but that Kickstarter was insane.

Wild Ascent does a lot of the same things, and seems like it’s a shorter campaign. KDM feels more like a lifestyle game. And while I wouldn’t mind having a solo lifestyle game that I can keep set-up all the time. Until I get a board game table, which I want to do eventually, and can get two levels and leave a game up all the time, one is about all that I can manage.

That is why I passed on Wild Ascent twice. There was a Gamefound and Kickstarter campaign, and the Gamefound one I was so tempted by. But I held off because do I need another big game that will be hard to get to the table? No, but I really really want it.

Chronicles of Drunagor

Another campaign game, and one that I did end up backing the second time around. So why is it on the list, because I was interested in it when it came out the first time. And if I had backed it then, I could be playing it now. This is another big dungeon crawl campaign game that does some really cool things.

Firstly, the terrain is 3D, meaning levels to go up and down. And when you get to a door, that door tells you what is in the next room and you set it up then. Plus the action system is really interesting. You have cubes that determine what you can activate, which is great. Because as you activate spots you start to lose what you can do. And then you pull everything back, but you cover up an ability.

The puzzle of the game just seems good. And there are a number of reviews out for it now, and they are good. So I could be playing that now, but so many games that I probably wouldn’t actually be.

QE and On Tour

So, I own half of these games now, and I wish I owned both. But it’s also one that I kind of don’t mind I don’t own it yet. I own On Tour, a great roll and write game. And one with a great app. But QE is one that I think I want to own, but for sure want to try.

QE is a bidding game where you buy companies and get points. The trick is that you are bidding and there is no set amount. So I could be 20 trillion dollars. However, the person who has bid the highest total amount of money at the end is automatically eliminated. So bidding will escalate, I think it’d be impossible for it not to, because if one person gets everything, everyone loses. how much and how crazily, who knows.

QE really doesn’t sound like it should work. But everyone who reviews it says that it does, though, often, they don’t know why. I think it might be a bit group dependent, but in the right group could be hilarious. Another one that seems like a great game night game.

Canvas

Canvas

I backed the second Canvas Kickstarter and I wish I’d backed the first. Not only could I be playing it now, but I wouldn’t need the expansion. On the second Kickstarter, the option was just there to get the expansion and base game together, not just the base game. I am sure that I won’t mind having the expansion, but do I really need it.

Canvas is a game where you are painting a picture. You do that by selecting cards and layering them on top of each other. The game Gloom is one that I have which does something similar. But in this one you are creating pictures. And depending on the symbols at the bottom of the picture, you score points. The game looks simple but also like a lot of fun.

That’s The Crowdfunding Wish List

Now, I could have picked more. Lords of Hellas, wish I’d backed it, maybe, same with Deep Madness, but I own most of both of those now. Or there were games like Monumental that almost made the list. Deck building with an interesting action mechanism sounds really cool. But I want to play it more than I want to own it. And maybe once I play it I’d want to own it.

Have there been any games for you that you wished you’d backed? Do you pick up those games on eBay or hope that they get a second crowdfunding campaign? Let me know what your top game you wished you’d backed is.

Well, we know now, and how excited am I for it, we knew it was going to Marvel, so a lot!

We know what the game is now, and I have to say I’m excited and disappointed. The reason why I am disappointed in CMON’s 50th Kickstarter has nothing to do with what the Kickstarter is. But if you read my Crowdfunding Round-up just last week, you might be able to figure it out. Take a minute, the article is right here.

So, did you figure it out?

This all started with Quackalope, The Dice Tower, Man vs Meeple and more getting a package from CMON in the mail to open. You can read my initial thoughts and guesses here. And I dismissed what it actually was, but let’s stop beating around the bush, what is it?

Marvel Zombicide

Here’s the Quackalope reveal for it, and honestly I’m as giddy as Alex from BoardGameCo is on that video. I love Marvel, I know that might be a surprise, so I wanted to see what it is. The advantage of it being Zombicide is that while they sometimes do have campaign game play, most of the time it’s just scenario based. That means it will theoretically be easier to get to the table. But Zombicide is a game that has a fair amount of set-up to it, which makes it a bit harder.

But I teased that I was a bit bummed about the announcement and I said that I was giddy as well. So, I backed Zombicide: Undead or Alive. I’d avoided backing any Zombicide for a long time because while the game interested me, it’s a zombie game, and there are a lot out there. I don’t have that many, but zombies aren’t a theme that I need a ton of. But zombies in the wild west, that’s cool to me, so I backed it. However, Marvel Zombicide, I’m way more interested in that. I mean, this even coincides with them announcing a Marvel Zombies TV series on Disney+.

But now I’m going to have two Zombicides, do I really need two different versions of Zombicide. The answer, absolutely not. Thankfully CMON games tend to hold value pretty well, but also, there are going to be a lot of people getting this game and getting rid of other versions. So, maybe I will keep both for a bit, I’ll at least played and learn Undead or Alive while waiting for this one.

What To Expect From This Kickstarter?

Well, firstly, that giant Zombie Galactus, that’ll be something that you can add-on in the Kickstarter. Will I do that, probably not, though I’ll really want to. Why will I want to, because, man, it just look cool. But you can expect a ton of minis, you can expect the all in to be around $225-300. When I backed Zombicide Undead or Alive that was probably $200. And Marvel United X-Men, because I added the playmat was $300. So I expect this to be closer to $300.

You can also expect a ton of minis. If this does well enough that might be a literal ton of minis. But one thing I do love is that they announced this with the Fantastic Four, at least kind of. It was the Silver Surfer and Galactus. I hope that means that some of the first heroes for the game are the Fantastic Four. In Marvel United X-Men, we got them as an add-on which of course I got, but there hasn’t been anything that is focused on them. So I hope this starts with a focus that way.

I am also guessing we’ll see “team” packs as add-ons. So a Young Avengers team, X-Force, Avengers, X-Men, and more. I mainly want to be able to play as Gambit, but we already knew that from Marvel United X-Men. I am really curious to see who the bad guys will be. Are we going to have some heroes as zombies? Are we going to have some bad guys as playable heroes? There are a ton of questions, that I’m guessing we’ll start to get answers on soon.

When Is This Happening?

That’s a good question. They are teasing a date of 11/22, but it’s also being teased as that not being when the Kickstarter launches. So I think that’ll be the date that we find out when the launch is happening. If they are smart it’ll be soon because they are building the hype right now. And let’s face it, CMON is a company who knows how to run a Kickstarter, so it’ll be happening soon. And I will let you know when I know more.

Are you excited for Marvel Zombicide? Were you hoping for something different?
