10. Rebel Princess Deluxe Edition

Buy Rebel Princess Deluxe Edition

The top trick taking game on my list is Hearts. Well, not completely Hearts, it’s Hearts with shenanigans and that is the element that makes it amazing. If you are familiar with Hearts, you know you don’t want to win the hearts because they are worth points. In this game, you are doing the same thing, but as princesses trying to dodge the proposals of the princes and of course the very dangerous frog princes.

But let’s talk about the shenanigans because that is where the game separates itself from Hearts. In Rebel Princess you each get a princess with a special power. It might be to force someone to lead a suit, or you take over the lead of a trick even if you didn’t win the previous one. They are once per round. The bigger shenanigans comes from the rule for each round. It tells you how to pass cards, but also then something special that round, like the number furthest from the led card wins the trick, to make the trick taking different.

9. Zenith

Out Of Stock Currently

Zenith is the new one on the list, and it blew me away on BGA so much that I knew I needed to pick it up when it came out. Zenith is a two or four player, but really two player game where you are having a tug of war over different planets. When you get influence on a planet all the to your side, you get a token, and you win with three from one planet, four different ones, or five total.

But let’s talk about winning influence. The simplest way is to play a card down on your side of the table, that’ll move it one towards you and give you some other bonus. But to do that you need to pay the cost, so sometimes you need to do other actions to get more money. One of them is to discard a card for a bonus. Depending on the type of card, you get a different bonus for it, and you gain the leader token which means you get an extra card in hand. Finally there is technology which you use to gain bonuses but also move influence on planets.

8. Slay the Spire: The Board Game

Buy Slay the Spire: The Board Game

You know that I love Slay the Spire the video game and the same is true for the board game. In the board game it’s the same thing as the video game, but everything is scaled down. This is a very smart decision because I don’t want to do a lot of math, but I still want to play the same game I love. So you climb the tower, you fight normal and elite monsters, and you rest and add cards, everything that you love about Slay the Spire the video game.

But there is an extra twist for the board game as well. In the board game you also can play it cooperatively. And I love that for the game because there is no reason that you shouldn’t be able to. It levels up how much health the boss has, and each character gets their own row of normal monsters to face. The cool thing about that row is that I can help you attack your row if your monsters are attacking for too much. Or you can help with mine, but whichever row you attack, you get attacked by your row. So there is a strategic puzzle to figure out as a group.

7. Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game

Buy Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game

I might be the person in the world like Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game the most. But I think it is worth talking about and I think at least the core box is one that more people should play. The core box is a series of intertwined cases that you need to figure out the leads and what to track down. The best way, and I mean this as compliment, I can describe the game is that it’s like NCIS or CSI but fun because you are the detectives.

The game has so much going for it. You need to figure out what lead you want to track down, you need to take evidence to the lab and get your results, or you need to spend resources pressing people for more information. All of that is going to cost time, so you need to get it done before time runs out.

And all the cases are different. Even in the core box where they link together, they are all unique. And the one off cases are all different as well and set in different time periods or different locations. Even the Batman version of the game is a ton of fun.

6. Dice Throne

Designers: Nate Chatellier, Aaron Hein, and Manny Trembley

Buy Dice Throne

Dice Throne is probably always going to be game in my Top 10. Mainly because they keep on coming out with more Dice Throne and I keep on buying it. But the game is a great plug and play game that can be described as battle Yahtzee. But that is not fair to the game because Dice Throne is more than that. Yes, it uses the Yahtzee style rolling to deal damage to your opponent, but the cards, and dice manipulation and how you work that together is where the game is so fun.

Plus, each character in the game is unique and does something different. Whether that is with Marvel and Gambit who has his aces that he can play, Doctor Strange who has spells that he can cast, or Scarlet Witch who can swap out the dice that her opponent roles. Or it is unique for the non-IP characters as well with the Gunslinger having a showdown type of defense, the Treant having sapplings that do unique things, or the Pyromancer building up their flames.

5. Aeon’s End

Aeon's End

Buy Aeon’s End

I love deck-building and Aeon’s End is my favorite mainly deck-building game. I put it that way because I have another game that uses deck-building, but it is less of a deck-building game. This one is great because it gives you a boss battler as well as you play the game. You need to cast spells to deal with the bosses actions, minions, and hopefully knockdown the boss, the nemesis, if you can.

The game does a couple of fun things. Firstly, I like the turn order in the game, though I will say, I think that it makes it a two player game. The turn order is randomly drawn from a deck, so you might go twice in a row, if you have two of your number in there, or you might have the nemesis get multiple turns in a row. It keeps the game feeling tense and stressful. But I think it works best as a two player game because otherwise you might have a long time between turns.

Then the deck of cards. As you add cards and you need to draw again, you don’t shuffle the deck. Instead you just flip it and you draw from that. If you are smart, you can set it up so that you are drawing a strong hand. It is tricky, but it’s also a ton of fun when you get it right.

4. Lost Ruins of Arnak

Lost Ruins of Arnak

Buy Lost Ruins of Arnak

This is the other game that has deck-building, but it’s less of the game. Lost Ruins of Arnak is a deck-building, worker placement and resource management game that I just love. The theme really helps sell me on the game where you are exploring the jungle and trying to become the most famous explorer. Yes, that theme is hiding behind the mechanisms in some ways, but it’s there.

The game is really a great puzzle as you need to figure out how to explore new locations, defeat those monsters, and go up a research track. But they do it thematically in some areas, and I love that. You can buy new gear with money, but when you do that, it goes to the bottom of your deck of cards. Why, because it needs time to ship over. But if you buy a relic, that’s there, and you can use it immediately. Or on the research track as you advance, you need to discover, magnifying glass, before you can write about it, journal.

And the Expedition Leaders makes the game even better. It means that each player is starting at a unique spot. And it helps shape how you want to solve the puzzle. I thin the game is a 9 for me without this, but with it, and it’s an easy addition, it’s an easy 10 and in my Top 10 of all time.

3. Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon

Tainted Grail

Published By: Awaken Realms
Designers: Krysztof Piskorski, Marcin, Swierkot

Buy Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

Now a game that has been in my Top 10 for a long time with Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. I still think this game has the best story and writing of any game that I’ve played. It does an amazing job of weaving together a narrative over three different campaigns. And you want to explore and read all the story. It’s so good and the storymode fixes the issue, that even though the regular game is a grind when it comes to resources, this is still a game that I love.

I think that the game works so well too in what you are doing. The combat and diplomacy checks you come across offer interesting puzzles of card play. And then when you go to a new card and you find new choices, it’s really interesting. I also should mention with combat, I like how you sometimes just want to runaway. A combat is going to be too hard for you and instead of taking a ton of damage, if your draw bad cards, you should just run.

As an aside, I can’t wait to play the new game in the series. But it’s being waited on because of other campaign games to play. I’ve heard it is less grindy, so if you are worried about that in the base game, maybe check out that version.

2. Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Buy Arkham Horror: The Card Game

At number two is a return to glory in some ways. I think that Arkham Horror: The Card Game was in the Top 3 or so when I first started the list. But it is back here because I’ve gotten to play more over this past year. I’ve done the story in the core box and started on another one. And I built my own character for that which is fun to do as well.

The game is just impressive with how it uses cards in such an interesting way. I love how they become a map for the house, city, or whatever you are in. And how they use simple symbols to help you know what connects to what in the game. And each campaign feels different. I played the Arkham Nights one at a game store, and that was super unique and fun, while the base box felt like a great introduction, and the Scarlet Keys is already shaping up to be different.

I also like that each character you build is going to be good at different things. So you need to balance the party. But you might want a challenge and create a different and unique combination of characters to go with as well.

1. Frosthaven, Gloomhaven, Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion

Frosthaven

Published By: Cephalofair Games

Buy Frosthaven

The final spot on the Top 100 Games (of all time) 2025 Edition is the same as it’s always been. This is Gloomhaven, or Frosthaven, or Jaws of the Lion. They are all the same game, though Frosthaven does add in a city management phase which is very fun for the game as well. This is an amazing dungeon crawler game and very worth checking out if you haven’t played a dungeon crawler before. Especially Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion as a starting point for the game.

In this game you play different scenarios and you need to figure out with your unique character how to defeat the enemies and complete the objectives. In Gloomhaven a lot of the objectives are defeat everyone. But Frosthaven adds in more variety, so you need to figure out the puzzle.

And how do you do that? You do that with playing cards from your hand. Each card has a top action, a bottom action, and an initiative on it. You pick one of the two cards to set your initiative and then generally you have a plan of which top of a card and which bottom you want to use. But, if the board changes, maybe the enemies move on you, you can adjust which top and bottom you want to use from the cards you play. And did I mention that each character is unique and feels different in how they play, because they do. And you get a try a lot of them.

Thank You For Joining The Journey

I hope that you’ve had fun with my Top 100 Games (of all time) 2025 Edition. I always have fun putting together this list. And I apologize for it being a bit delayed in when the article came out as compared to the video on Malts and Meeples YouTube channel. My schedule has been weird as of late.

So with that, be aware I will be streaming as I can. I still want to go through my 101 through 200, aka the games that I still love but couldn’t crack the Top 100. And really, I love a lot more games than just 200. But that video is going to come out when it can. And it might not come out live depending on what my potential filming schedule looks like. The same with other streaming like Legendary Kingdoms and Baldur’s Gate 3. And then I have other games I want to play too, like Regicide Legacy that are going to stream well.

So all of that is to say, thank you for watching. And subscribe and click the notification bell to know when new videos come up on the Malts and Meeples channel.

We dive into the ones that I have and which ones maybe should leave.

The post How Many Trick-Taking Games Do I Need? first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Alright, I said we were going to come back to it. But we’re talking about thinning out my game collection. I’ve actually started going through and pulled out some games where I’m like, that’s good but I’m not going to play it over other games. Today we’re going to be talking about Trick-Taking Games. The nice thing with trick-taking games is that they are small. For that reason I expect to keep most of them. But I want to ask the question, do I need to keep them all?

And if you want to know the criteria that I’m using, or the conversation starting point, you can read that article here.

My Trick-Taking Games

Let’s start out by just listing off the games. And these are the ones that I own and I maybe have played.

Played:
The Crew: Mission Deep Sea
The Fox in the Forest
Cat in the Box
The Fellowship of the Ring: Trick-Taking Game
For Northwood! A Solo Trick-Taking Game
The Fox in the Forest Duet
Scahdenfreude
9 Lives
Rebel Princess
Pumafiosi
Matcha

Unplayed:
Jekyll & Hyde vs Scotland Yard
Ghosts of Christmas
Jalape-NO
Lunar
Pies
FORK
The Six of VIII
No Loose Ends
Tricky Kids

The Unplayed Games

To start off with, the unplayed ones are staying. In particular Ghosts of Christmas, Tricky Kids, No Loose Ends, and The Six of VIII are ones that I really want to get played. I could say that maybe FORK, Lunar, Pies, some of those might be redundant to the other trick-taking games that I have in the played section. But the thing is, I want to get these played to know for sure. And the good think about trick-taking is that most of the time they are easy to get played.

The Played Games

Now let’s talk about the played games. And I think that I might mainly disappoint myself. But I think I’m going to be keeping most of them if not all of them. Because while a few of them do duplicate things, like cooperative play, I think they are different enough and fit different reasons to keep them in my collection.

Cooperative Trick-Taking

For the cooperative ones let’s talk about the difference. Firstly Fox in the Forest Duet is two player only. And it is not about winning certain objectives to advance. The other two are both about objectives. But with the Fellowship of the Ring Trick-Taking Game, that one is a “campaign” of sorts. Or at least it feels like it has more story to it. The Crew is a campaign as well in that you can ramp up the difficulty, but it is easier to jump into a higher level without feeling like you missed some of the game.

Bidding Trick-Taking

Now this is where a few things could maybe move over time. The bidding trick-taking games might feel a bit more the same. Right now I just think of two that are in the played section with 9 Lives and Cat in the Box. And Cat in the Box does something different completely where you can short suit yourself whenever you want because nothing has a suit. That is a step more than 9 Lives. But, as I play others that have that bidding for how many tricks you take, I could see 9 Lives leaving.

Two Player Trick-Taking

Finally, let’s talk two player trick-taking. And this is where I think I maybe should get rid of a game. I’m not sure that I need Matcha and Fox in the Forest and Fox in the Forest Duet. Now, the question is which one is going to stay. I think that Matcha is really interesting but it’s maybe a bit harder to teach. For that reason that is probably the trick-taking game that should leave.

Final Thoughts on my Trick-Taking Games

This is obviously not ideal. I want to clear out more games. Though this isn’t because I don’t want to keep all the games around. It is more a situation where I need more space for games and culling and going through my collection helps with that a lot. But smaller games are easier to justify. But with trick-taking, I want to go through this list again after I knock off a handful more of the games on the list. Because I think that a number of them might get culled.

Why will they get culled then versus now? Because I want to come up with what my favorite five to eight of them are. Some I know will always stick around, Rebel Princess for example, but others are good but I’m not 100% sold that they’ll stick around like Cat in the Box. But I want to spend more time with my trick-taking games, and then I’ll revisit them.

Next time I want to look at my drafting games.

I think there are a few different types of games that work well.

The post Five Types of Board Games To Play With Non-Gamers first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
One thing I think as gamers we like to do is try and get people to enjoy board games like we do. I think that is a noble thing to do because a good time board gaming can be a good time with people. But not all board games are for all people. I think of Facebook posts where I see of people getting into the hobby and people recommending Scythe to them (don’t do that btw). But let’s talk about five different types of board games that maybe can work for people who are just getting into the hobby or are maybe not in the hobby but play casually.

Five Types of Board Games To Play With Non-Gamers

Now, I am going to skip a bit one, mainly because some of these will fall into that same category or they can. But cooperative games are always good. Often times people don’t like games because they played Monopoly and Risk as a kid and had bad experiences with that. So competitive games are kind of a trigger for a bad time, but turning it on it’s head and everyone working together is great.

Escape Room Games

Let’s start out with board games that are escape room or puzzle games. These are going to feel really unique to players. And this is a situation where the games are cooperative as well, so players are going to like it for that, potentially. But it is also going to feel not like a normal experience. A game like Micro Macro Crime City where you explore a map and spot a criminal or crime across a map in a “Where is Waldo?” style experience is going to be unique.

Or there are the Exit and Unlock games. These are going to give you more of the puzzle feeling that an escape room might be. And there are a lot of people who do escape rooms who might not board game. So it’s a good branch between an activity that some people might like and a board game. Or even things like Sudoku and Crosswords and Cryptograms that people do for a brain teaser activity daily will help them be interested in an escape room style of game.

Trick Taking Games

Next up for a type of board games is trick taking games. This one makes a lot of sense because even if people don’t play too many games, they often at least know Hearts from the computer. So trick taking games are a nice safe and soft entry into more board games.

Now it might seem like this isn’t really an entry point, but it is. It is because there are so many variations or board gamer type things done with trick taking games. Things like The Crew make it cooperative, so that is interesting. Or there is Schadenfreude where you want to come in second to score points, but you also don’t want to go over forty points. And Rebel Princess which is just hearts, but there are powers and rules change each round. So it is going to feel familiar but there are a lots of trick taking games that add in more.

The Crew Mission Deep Sea

Dexterity Games

Next up is Dexterity Games. These are great board games to use when you have a variety of ages and a variety of interest. Why, because they can become a funny good time or a really tense time, it’s up in the air, literally, depending on the game that you decide to play.

A game like Ice Cool or Pitchcar are going to be more on that funny good time as you either have Penguins who are skipping class to get a fish snack and trying to avoid the hall monitor as you flick them around. Or you are racing around a track in Pitchcar. Either way it’s lighter and more of the excitement comes from someone making a great shot.

Then you have a game like Menara. This is going to be a stacking game, but unlike others, say Jenga, where you are removing things and the person who knocks it over loses, this one you are building up the tower, kind of like Jenga, but it’s cooperative. So you want to complete a target objective before it gets knocked over. And that is going to provide that cooperative and dexterity that can make it easier to play.

Roll and Write Games

The next time of board games are roll and write games. Now, with this one be careful. There are roll and write games that are very complex. But there are a lot of easy ones as well. And you want to target those that are a step up from Yahtzee. That is why they are on the list. People know Yahtzee, so it is going to be familiar to them. And a roll and write will seem less intimidating.

I think that something like Ganz Schon Clever (That’s Pretty Clever) can be a great option. There is a bit to learn in scoring, but for the most part it’s a fast and easy teach. Or a game like Metro X where you fill in tracks, that could bed good. And Mind Space or Qwixx over simpler game play but with just that little bit more for it. There are a ton out there, so a lot of good options.

Drafting Games

Finally are drafting games. This, like Roll and Write Games, you need to think about a little bit. I don’t know that I’d jump straight into Seven Wonders. But there are great games out there like Sushi Go and Draftosaurus that work really well. And the themes help those games.

The reason I think these board games work well is that you all go at once. There isn’t that downtime. And you learn as you go, often times with these games. Often, I feel like, for a competitive game, you get the question, what’s a good strategy. Or, I don’t know what to do. Drafting games I often find you get the question, but the answer is pick something for the first card. And as options get fewer it is easier and becomes more reactive. So I say often times the first card doesn’t matter.

And because you play all at once it means that games are often shorter. A game of Draftosaurus, for example, is maybe twenty minutes if people are really slow. So it’s great to play once and then play again.

Final Thoughts

These are just some of the types of games. I think there are a lot of types of games that can work for people to try for a new game. One important thing, though, is to remember that not everyone is going to like every type of game. So try some things and see what works, and ask people why they maybe don’t like board games. And then if you want to try, try and find something that’ll avoid those things they don’t like.

What types of board games do you introduce to new prospective gamers?

The post Top 10 Games from 2024 first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
So we’re back to 2024. The video went out last night, and thanks to people for hopping and watching while I went through my Top 10 games of 2024. I do want to admit, I made a big omission. I realized that Rock Hard 1977, a game I’ve played, I totally forgot to rank. It’s not like one of those games that I missed out on because I played it after I made the list. I totally forgot it. So think of that one somewhere probably around 3-5 range.

Top 10 Games of 2024

10. Dungeon Kart

Dungeon Kart

Do you want to play Mario Kart? Do you want to play a board game? Why not do both and play Dungeon Kart from Brotherwise Games. This is a racing game where you play as the characters from Boss Monster, those bosses who are trying to build up their dungeon, well, they want to blow off some steam. So hit the track and use their abilities and their cars to the best of your abilities to get around the track first. If you fall behind, don’t worry. You get spells and blast away at your opponents to slow them down so you can get back into the race.

I like this one because it is a fast game and a theme that people like. I like Mario Kart a lot, and I know that a lot of people do. So Dungeon Kart is an easy one to recommend. Add in that the game is simple to play, and it is even easier to recommend. There are a few things that you need to know, but overall, not a complex or difficult game to learn. And the fact that the characters and cars are different, that’s fun as well.

9. Snowfall Over Mountains

Snowfall Over Mountains

Snowfall Over Mountains is one of a few smaller games on the list, but the only one that is only solo. I enjoy this game for the solo experience because it’s one of those calming and relaxing solo games. You are drawing cards and trying to build a snowscape around you that is going to score the most points.

You score points for different things like rabbit tracks or trees. And there are a few different scoring cards for each of the elements. That is good because it means you can mix and match and get a lot of different combinations for a lot of good variety in what you are doing.

The footprint isn’t as small as some solo games, but it’s not huge. And the box that the game comes in is a nice and small box so if you are traveling and want a solo game to take along this is a solid one.

8. Star Wars: Unlimited

Star Wars Unlimited Twilight of the Replubic

Next up, this game could have been higher, I think. I really like Star Wars Unlimited and I really enjoy the TCG aspect of it. As I say in the video, without the theme I’m not sure I’d be as excited for it. But being able to build a deck with clones, droids, Mandelorians, rebels, whatever factions they have thus far, that’s a lot of fun. And there are a number of aspects that also help the game.

I want to focus on one aspect here. I really like that you always have a leader in this game. The leader is going to give you an ability that you can use, even when they aren’t in play, and that ability is going to give you a focus for your deck. There isn’t just throwing your favorite cards into a deck, you need to think about synergies as well between your characters.

Okay, one more aspect that I really like, and I promise that is it. I appreciate that the game doesn’t let you run out of energy. There is no card draw and hope you get credits or whatever so you can play out cards. Instead, it uses this great system, you draw two cards and, if you want, put one into play as a resource. I love that decision space as I need to decide, do I want this card or do I want the resource, and that is often times a very tough call.

7. The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-Earth

Lord of the Rings Duel

Now for another theme that I really like, we have The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-Earth. This game reimplements 7 Wonders Duel, but it’s not just a straight reimplementation. And for me that is a good thing. I like 7 Wonders Duel a lot. But I think that I like Lord of the Rings Duel (as I’ll be calling it) more. And of course, the theme is a great reason for that.

I also like that the game doesn’t end with scoring. Yes, I’m not 100% sold on how it does end, but there are a number of ways for it. There is only one way that I have an issue with or wish there was a bit more. The first way is that the ringbearer makes it to Mount Doom and chucks in the ring, or the Nazgul catches the ringbearer. Or if you rally the support of the different races of Middle-Earth that’s another way too. Finally, if you take control or have a piece of control in every area. If none of those happen it’s whomever controls the most areas, and that’s okay.

But if you like Lord of the Rings, this is a great two player head to head game that I really recommend. If you don’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s still good. Especially if you want something with a bit of theme in it compared to 7 Wonders Duel.

6. Castle Combo

Castle Combo

Now for a game without much theme but that’s still a lot of fun. Obviously Castle Combo is a lot of fun, it’s in my Top 10 Games of 2024 and at #6. But this is a game about building out the best scoring grid that you can. The game is simple, you play it in nine rounds, and at the end, you have a 3 by 3 grid of 9 cards.

But there are elements to the game that offer a great challenge or some good fun. I like how the cards are all divided into three things. The first element is the cost, you need to be able to pay that coin cost to get it. The next is an instant effect. It might be that all cards of a certain type cost 1 less now. Or it might just get you coins or keys. Finally there is the scoring, and that is going to happen after all your grid is full. So you need to figure out how to optimize that scoring while still getting coins and keys to get more cards.

And I really like the key mechanism in the game. The keys either let you wipe the row of cards you are on. Or you can use the key to move you to the other row so you can buy from there. But, it won’t less you do both in one turn. I really like that challenge element of the game because I could wipe, but will I get something good. Or I could move, but maybe wiping will give me something better.

5. Let’s Go! To Japan

Let's Go! To Japan

Next up is one that didn’t make my Top 100 Games because I hadn’t played it yet. But I really love Let’s Go! To Japan. This is a game about planning out your itinerary for going to Japan. And you need to plan out three things to do each day in Tokyo, Kyoto, or both.

Each day has a particular theme that it wants you to go for as well. It might be that you want to get food one day and go to a nature sight another day. That order changes for every game, but the different symbols remain the same. The fun thing is that you need those symbols to score your cards each day, well to score the one that you can see the end game scoring on anyways. So if you need food and it’s before the food day, you probably need to get some food in a less than optimal way.

It is also a good drafting game. I like how I get two cards, one Tokyo and one Kyoto. I pick one to add to my itinerary and give you the other, or person to my left or right. But not to use right away, to collect into a hand of cards that then you’ll pick from later in the game. So I can set you up with stuff you don’t want. Or I can just focus on what is best for me. But it’s a nice twist on drafting.

4. Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game

Mistborn Deckbuilding Game

Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game was one of my most anticipated games for 2024, and clearly it didn’t disappoint. I really enjoy this game and of course, I love the theme and I love deckbuilding. But those two elements aren’t enough for me automatically love the game. I think the solo/cooperative play helps it as well, though I really do enjoy it as a competitive game too.

There are two elements I want to talk about that I really like. The first is the burning of the metals. I love how they make that a thematic part of the game. Pewter is going to give you more attack and healing. Things that help you sooth emotions or rile them up could heal or get people to be generous and give you more money. But they are thematic and I like that you are limited in how many you can burn, so there is a good amount of strategy in your deckbuilding.

I also like that the game has a leveling track. Each player levels up once per turn. That gives you new abilities that make you more unique and powerful in the game. And it starts to let you burn more metals. I think that combination just works well so that what could be a longer game, can’t be as long because you start to ramp and get stronger. And soon you might be buying and using cards with Atium and doing a lot of damage or leveling to win the game.

3. Rebel Princess Deluxe Edition

Rebel Princess

I never thought that I’d put Hearts on my top games list, but here it is, Hearts, albeit with shenanigans is my #3 game for 2024. I really like this one because it’s a familiar trick taking game. Instead of avoiding hearts and the queen of spades, you avoid the princes proposals and the frog prince and his proposal. That element is very much the same.

But it’s very different in a lot of other ways. You each have a princess and they have a power. You can use that power once per hand of cards. And then you, instead of passing left, right and then across, you pass however a flipped card tells you to. And that flipped card also has other things on it, like some special rules for that hand. It might be that the person furthest from the card that led the trick, numerically, is going to be the winner of that trick. It causes chaos but is so much fun.

2. Slay the Spire: The Board Game

Slay the Spire Board Game

The last two are ones that I’ve played on Malts and Meeples. First off we have Slay the Spire. I love the video game and the board game works just as well. In fact, it offers something that the video game can’t, you can play Slay the Spire: The Board Game multiplayer, and it’s amazing. In fact, I think I prefer it multiplayer, or maybe multihanded better than purely solo.

The game does a few things to make it work. While the core of climbing the tower, and adding cards to your deck, is the game, there are elements that are different. Firstly, it scales down the health and attack levels. I love this because it makes the math easier. Next you roll a die to determine the enemies attack and what relics that you have activate. This makes it simple as compared to keeping track that something goes off every seventh round or anything like that.

And I want to talk about multiplayer. Each player gets their own row of enemies that will damage them. But you are able to support your allies by attacking the enemies. So maybe mind are just playing defense for a round, that means that I can help wipe out your row of enemies and then you don’t have to worry about anything so you can go all out attacking. It’s a great addition to a great game.

1. The 7th Citadel

The 7th Citadel

Finally, at #1, we have The 7th Citadel. I really love this game and it’s what I had wanted from The 7th Continent, though I do appreciate that open and very sandbox system in The 7th Continent. The 7th Citadel gives you that same sandbox to play in but gives you more specific and focused missions. I know that I need to find something southeast. I’m not sure where for sure, but I just know that I need to go southeast, and I really enjoy how that works.

But the game keeps some of the core elements to it that are great. I like that you still are spending cards from a deck. And while that deck isn’t your life and won’t just instantly kill you if the wrong thing is drawn, bit kind of is your life. You put cards back into the deck by spending hit points. So if I want to get 10 cards by in, that’s five of my life. And while the game isn’t always punishing you with combat and taking life that way, there are a ton of challenges that you need to deal with.

Final Thoughts

Like I said at the beginning, I’m annoyed I missed Rock Hard 1977. I really like that game, so it’s an honorable mention and probably would be in about the middle. And I look at my shelf and I see more 2024 games that I want to play. Bomb Busters is a big one as is Stamp Swap that I want to try.

It is always a good year for games. If you don’t find one that you love, it means that you either got caught up in the hype for some game or weren’t looking that hard. And I love that I can find amazing games all the time to try. I definitely want to spend more time playing 2024 games, and maybe late in 2025, I’ll look back again at 2024 and see what my Top 10 looks like then.

Let me know your favorite game from 2024?

The post Holiday List – Trick Taking Games first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Another type of game that I enjoy a lot is trick taking. And while there are a ton of good trick taking games out there, there are some that are less than ideal, or some that are more derivative other games. So let’s find some newer ones or some more unique trick taking games to play and add to your holiday list.

And for other ideas check out the previous lists.

Trick Taking Games

For Northwood!

We’ll start off with the most unique trick taking game. This is one that already is on a list, but it deserves to show up twice. For Northwood is a solo trick taking game and if that sounds odd and unique it should. How do you make a solo game work for trick taking?

Firstly, you play against the game itself. But it’s not just about getting the most tricks. You need to win at different forest locations all which require a specific number of tricks to be won to succeed there. If you succeed you gather points and allies to use at other locations. Because you play against a random card, you need to use different helpers, you start with a few, to limit or increase the number of tricks you win so you succeed at the location.

The game itself is a great challenge. But then it also comes with some challenges that you can do as well. So once you are done with the regular game and feel comfortable with your strategies in that, let the game challenge you even more.

The Crew: Mission Deep Sea

The next one on the list is The Crew. I put down Mission Deep Sea, but you also can pick the space one. The Crew is a cooperative trick taking game. And you need to complete certain objectives to win each hand. However, you are not able to communicate which is going to be provide a bit of a challenge.

I like how it works because the challenges change for each hand. And for Mission Deep Sea they can change each time you play a certain level or hand. And it might be that I don’t want to win any blue colored cards. You need to win the red six. And another person has another thing they need to do. So how do you play out the hand to keep me from getting any blues. How do we get the red six at the right spot? That is the challenge in this game, and without communication it’s a fun puzzle and really teaches you trick taking strategy around how to win and lose a trick.

Fox in the Forest

Now we get to one of the two two player trick taking games on the list. Fox in the Forest is a head to head game where you want to get points by winning certain numbers of tricks. Win too many it can be bad, win too few, well the points vary across the range. So how can you manipulate the tricks and your opponent to get the number you want.

I enjoy the strategy of not always going for the most tricks. In fact, if you shoot the moon, so to speak, that can be bad. I also like how in the game, you do more than just play cards for their number. Some cards have powers as well. This might let you swap cards with your opponent, or change what the trump suit is. It offers a good puzzle to see how you can control what is going on so you can lock in that number of tricks.

Rebel Princess

Rebel Princess

Next up is the newest one on the list. It came out in the United States at Gen Con this year. And I really enjoy this game. It’s shot up my list of games that I always want to pull out and play because of h ow enjoyable it is. And because it’s probably the most familiar of the games on this list.

Rebel Princess is just Hearts in disguise. But it is a really good disguise. Like hearts you don’t want to take a certain suit, in this case the princes, because you are princesses and you are rebels. So you want to avoid them if you can. And you certainly want to avoid the frog prince, in the animal suit, because that’s a lot of proposals that you’ll have coming your way.

So all of that is normal, but let’s talk about what isn’t normal. Each player has a princess that they can use once per hand that gives them some sort of power. It might change the number of the card they play, or steal leading a trick, or several different things. And at the start of each hand how you pass the cards and some other rule are added to the game. It might be that you will win the trick if you are furthest away from the card led out. Or it might be the lowest card wins the trick and even more oddness as well could happen. All of those things make the game silly fun and good.

Claim

Finally another two player trick taking game. I believe there is a way to play with more, but this one works really well at two. Claim is played over two hands. And instead of counting tricks, you want to get majority in the suits. But each suit has it’s own power and the first hand you play, well it’s not going to help with that majority too much.

The first hand is going to be about building your second hand. You play out cards to win a new card from the deck of cards. And it might be a face up one, or it might be face down. If you win the trick you get the face up card. So sometimes you want to lose that trick because the face up card isn’t that good. But you also are taking the tricks that you win, because sometimes those cards will help later or give you some other ability to use right then.

The second hand plays out more like a traditional trick taking game. But you are trying to still get that majority. And again, there are a lot of powers and abilities of the suits that you need to keep track of. Like some suits just beat others, so you need to be aware of that. Or sometimes if you lose with a suit, you still get to keep that card you played to help get majority.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoy all of these games and there are a lot more that I want to play to get onto the list. So let me know your favorite trick taking games. And are there any from this list that you want to add to your holiday list or maybe you want to give to others this holiday season?

Top 100 Games (of all time) 2024 Edition – 50 through 41

50. Via Magica

Via Magica

 • Beat your fellow magic students in a bingo-esque game and utilize your powers best

This is a great filler level game. It’s a ton of fun to collect materials and use them to open gates. And then try and figure out what games and what elements you want to focus on opening first to get benefits from either immediately or throughout the game. As as well you need to grab points, so it’s a fun balancing act in what you’re doing. This is not going to be for everyone as it’s a light game, but I really like Via Magica for a nice relaxing and fun time.

Buy Via Magica

49. Too Many Bones

Too Many Bones

 • Chuck dice and battle enemies as you level up your Gearlocks to faceoff against the final boss

This is a fun short campaign style game. It’s not a big story game, but you get that mechanical feeling of leveling up in Too Many Bones that makes it such a fun time. And each Gearlock is unique and plays differently. I think that is part of what makes the same so special. Each characters want to level up in their own ways. And sometimes you just want better stats. But other times, getting and using your unique dice is going to create for some really fun game moments. The game isn’t a story game, but it can provide it’s own story.

Buy Too Many Bones

48. Ganz Schon Clever (That’s Pretty Clever)

Ganz Schon clever

 • Published by Schmidt Spiele in 2018
 • Place dice, fill in spots, and gain combos to get your highest score

I’ve already talked about this system two other times. But this is the original one to use the system and it’s my favorite of them. I really like how clean the puzzle is for trying to solve this game and do best at it. And there are enough combos that you can end up with some awesome turns. But the combos don’t slow down the game too much which is one element that I can really appreciate about this design compared to others. Though the flexibility in how you play is a little bit more limited.

Buy That’s Pretty Clever

47. Dungeon Kart

Dungeon Kart

 • Published by Brotherwise Games in 2024
 • Rev your engine, take off, and mess with your opponents in this fast racing game

Dungeon Kart is obviously trying to be a Mario Kart style game. And I think it does a good job of it. I’ve played other games that offer some of that, but Dungeon Kart I really enjoy. It does a great job balancing catching up, slinging spells at your opponents and just a fun time. You get behind, no biggie, you get more and better spells. You’re in the lead, well, it’s your own fault you are there and you’re going to get blasted, but don’t worry, you can still catch-up again.

46. Super Mega Lucky Box

 • Combo your way into a bingo victory

This is the second bingo like game on the list where something is drawn and all players use it. But this one is a flip and write game that is more bingo like than Via Magica and has you filling in a three by three grid. Of course as you fill in rows and columns you get bonuses that can give you more. And the game provides great offsetting of the luck of the slip with powers from lightning bolts. It’s just a really fun, easy to play and fast game.

Buy Super Mega Lucky Box

45. Cartographers

Cartographers

 • Published by Thunderworks Games in 2019
 • Draw your best map as you explore the lands in this flip and write game

The theme is only kind of there, but this is a great roll and write style of game. You flip over terrain and figure out how you want to place it out on your sheet. But beware monsters because your opponents get to decide where that’s going to go and it’s going to be the worst spot for you. Plus the game has fun scoring that rotates throughout the seasons so that one of the scoring elements in spring is going to be scored for winter as well.

Buy Cartographers

44. Res Arcana

Res Arcana
 • Published by Sand Castle Games in 2019
 • Can you get your magical engine up and running faster than your opponents in this race to 10 points

I like how simple Res Arcana is, but how thinky it is as well. You need to really figure out how you want to leverage the cards that you have, or draft, in this game. And drafting really adds some strategy to it as you can try and figure out what your best cards are going to be how you can get them to turn out points. The game has this great build to it until suddenly you can get points and then the game just flies to the finish.

Buy Res Arcana

43. Railroad Ink Challenge

Railroad Ink Challenge

 • Published by Horrible Guild in 2021
 • Can you connect your routes better than your opponents can?

Another roll and write game, last one in this section. Railroad Ink Challenge is a great game of building out routes of both trains and roads and trying connect as many of them as you can together. Challenge adds in challenges that you can push for to score more points. But beware of leaving too many unconnected pieces, those can lead to your doom as they are negative points.

Buy Railroad Ink Challenge

42. Rebel Princess

Rebel Princess

 • Published by Bezier Games in 2024
 • It’s Hearts with Shenanigans, in the best way as you avoid proposals you really don’t want.

That’s really what Rebel Princess is, Hearts with shenanigans. But the shenanigans really do make this game. The princess powers are all game breaking in some way, and you want the ones everyone else have. And then the card that determines the special rule for the hand is great as it messes with everything. So you need to be quick to adjust how you are playing every time, and I think that’s great.

Buy Rebel Princess

41. Rock Hard: 1977

Rock Hard 1977

 • Published by Devir Games in 2024
 • Live your best rockstar life as you go from garage band to playing stadiums in this worker placement game

This game is really about living that 1970’s classic rocker life as you build up your band, gain reputation, write more songs all in hopes of playing on the biggest stage. I love how the worker placement is split up over three different times, day, evening, and after hours. And it’s fun that you need to worry about your job, at least for a little bit, and pay your producer as you become more famous because of course, while they help you, they also hurt you. It’s just very thematic for a worker placement game and a theme that I like a lot.

Buy Rock Hard: 1977

Upcoming Streams

Just a reminder on my streaming schedule. It’s not just all my Top 100 Games (of all time).

 • Monday night, time varies, I play different small solo games, though I might be looking to start up a campaign again. And generally the streams do start between 8 and 8:30 PM central time.
 • Wednesday at 9 PM central is going to continue my Top 100 Games (of all time) 2024 Edition for another six weeks. After that expect this to be when I play my small games. Only 5 more weeks left of my Top 100 Games, then likely this will switch to smaller solo games and video games.
 • Friday at 9 PM central my wife and I are streaming a playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3. Join us for the adventure of Nina and Kaerok and see what choices we make.

The best way to know when we go live, though is to subscribe and click that notification bell. I can’t promise, and in fact it’s pretty unlikely, that I’ll have events to click on ahead of time. Though I do want to get better at it. I hope that you can join a stream and hop into the chat. And let me know what games in this list are your favorite or that you want to try.

I want to play more trick taking, but here are my current Top 5.

The post Top 5 Trick Taking Games first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
I want to play more trick taking games, but let’s talk about the ones that I have played. And eventually I’ll get around to the ones that I still need to play. But I’ve played enough to put together a top 5, though not enough to do a Top 10. But if you like trick taking games, this will at least give you a few to try out. And let me know your favorites as well.

Top 5 Trick Taking Games

5. 9 Lives

9 Lives is a bidding trick taking game. There are a few different types of trick taking, and this is going to be in the vein of ones where you bid to see how many tricks you take. But I found there to be some interesting elements to the game. It’s a race to 9 points or whomever has the most points after 4 rounds.

But there is an additional twist to the game. As you play and win tricks you pull a card from that trick. This is good and strategic because you want to win the number of tricks you bid on. You might need a high number to win more. Or you might want to lose a trick instead.

4. Fox in the Forest Duet

Fox in the Forest Duet is a two player cooperative trick taking game. And that in itself is unique. But I appreciate how it does it. You want to move the fox token and collect all the leaves from the forest. To do that you need to vary who wins tricks because cards have paw prints on them, and how many paw prints there are is how far the fox moves. So if it is one away from my edge of the board, I want to win only if I can move one. Otherwise I want to send it back you way. So can you win in three hands or not is the question?

3. Rebel Princess

A new one for me, and you can read my review of it here. This one is a Hearts style trick taking game. So I appreciate the feel of that because I few up playing Hearts on the computer. But it more than that because there are special powers and abilities. Each player gets a Princess that gives them a power which always seems game breaking. And each round there is a new unique power that comes out which vastly changes how you play the game.

The Crew Mission Deep Sea

2. The Crew: Mission Deep Sea

Next up is The Crew, I’ve only played Mission Deep Sea but I love what it does. This is a cooperative trick taking game. But it’s cooperative with missions. So you want need to not win a trick while another person might need to win two sevens and I need to win a trick with a blue and a green card. And with limited communication we need to make that work. I love that element of the game, trying to get it to work. And if people know trick taking, it is easier, but still, missions can be very hard.

1. For Northwood!

Finally is a solo trick taking game. Yes, you read that right, my #1 is a solo game. And with trick taking you expect that it’s going to need people to interact and play off of each other. But no, For Northwood offers the trick taking experience in a solo game. You need to react to what the deck is flipping out. But don’t worry, you have friendly forest creatures helping you. And it isn’t about just winning as many tricks as you can. You need to win a specific number to get access to more friendly woodland creatures, and to score points.

Final Thoughts

I like trick taking a lot. I think that people will call out some of them like Ghosts of Christmas, Cat in the Box, Fox in the Forest and more that I should play. And yes, I should play them because I own most of them. I want to have a trick taking day just to play trick taking board games and enjoy them. But I haven’t set-up a time for that yet.

Also missing from the list are some classic games. I mentioned Hearts but I also played Euchre growing up as well. Both of them mainly digitally which was fun. Classic trick taking still often holds up. And I’d still sit down and play either of the games.

What are your favorite trick taking games?

Never has there been a game that is simpler to describe. My tagline for the review of Rebel Princess from Bezier Games is exactly what the game is. And that tagline might be enough for you to know if you’re interested in the game or not. But this is a game that I’ve played a bunch since getting it from Gen Con because of how easy it is to teach and get to the table. Even when the shenanigans try and mess you up.

How To Play Rebel Princess

The simple way is that it is hearts. But if you aren’t familiar with hearts, here’s a rundown of how it works for Rebel Princess. You get dealt a hand of cards. And then you play out one card at a time. The person who leads the trick picks the suit that everyone needs to follow. Winning a trick isn’t bad or good. But you want to avoid a trick with a prince in it, because they propose and proposals are bad. You especially want to avoid the frog prince because he is worth five proposals.

You play this out over several hands of cards, three for a short game and five for a full game. But let’s talk about the shenanigans because they matter as well. There are two elements that twist the basic game. The first is each player gets a princess. They pick between one of two dealt to them, and once per hand, they can use the princesses power to mess with things. It might turn a higher value card into a 0. Or it might let them pick the start of a trick.

The other thing is there is a decree each hand. Normally in hearts you pass a set number of cards a direction each hand. Well, in Rebel Princess that is variable. And how you figure out who wins a trick might change. It might be the greatest difference from the led card that wins the trick. Or it might be that you pass a card. There are a ton of different ways that the game gets changed up each hand.

What Doesn’t Work?

I don’t have much for this one because it is what it says it is. Rebel Princess is Hearts with shenanigans. If I pick something, it would be that since it plays from 3 to 6 players the game varies a lot. At 6 it is going to be considerably more random. So one thing I didn’t mention is shooting the moon. When you shoot the moon you take all the points. If you do that, you get negative points. This is only really a strategy for 3-4 players. If you get it at 5-6 players it is basically luck. That is something to aware of at different player counts. Not bad, but be aware.

What Works?

The rest of the game works really well. I like how there is a different decree each time. Certain strategy elements, like trying to short suit yourself, they will always work. But How you lead out a trick really varies. If, for example, it is greatest difference from the led number wins, the frog prince isn’t a bad card. As long as there is one other green suit left, you play it from your hand you are guaranteed not to win it. You need to think on your feet each hand to adapt to the changes.

I also like that it changes from classic Hearts to only be five hands. Hearts, with good players, can drag out a while. You try to stick or not stick people with points. Here it is just a race over those five hands. You may know by the end of round four it is not possible for you to win. But some of the final round cards do offer some crazy point scoring. Even then, you always battle for second and third. But it’s nice to have that end.

And let’s talk princess powers. All of the princess powers have good uses. All of the princess powers have restrictions. They are great because they can all be used well, if you use them well. And when you use them well, they all seem game breaking. Being able to set the lead suit of a trick can be great. Or being able to swap cards, or set a 7 to be a value of 0. All of those are fun to play around with. They won’t win you a game, but they might help you avoid taking a trick.

Who Is It For?

I think this game can work for a lot of people. It’s a game I have played it with people who know hearts and those who don’t and people have fun with it. I think the theme makes it appealing because it is silly. Trying to duck proposals from princes is a goofy theme. And the frog prince works well.

But for people who play Hearts, it’s still going to enjoyable. It’s basically taking hearts and putting a challenge mode on top of it. So it will feel different enough from Hearts but also familiar enough that they can sit down and play almost immediately.

Final Thoughts and Grade on Rebel Princess

I find this game a lot of fun. This is one of the games I got to demo at Gen Con and I knew I wanted to pick it up immediately. I love the the familiarity with the twist. Hearts is one of those games that if you grew up from 1992 to the mid 2000’s you knew how to play because it came with Windows. That is how I learned to play the game. If you didn’t have a computer game to play or had a few minutes, Hearts was a good game for that.

This, to me, is just that much more fun. There is an element of nostalgia to it, but I love the new stuff added. The theme, the princesses, the decrees each hand, all of that makes for such a fun time. And I love it as a way to introduce people to a traditional trick taking game. Hearts might not interest them because it’s kind of basic. But give it a theme and it’s way more interesting.

Gen Con 2024 Recap https://nerdologists.com/2024/08/gen-con-2024-recap/ https://nerdologists.com/2024/08/gen-con-2024-recap/#respond Wed, 07 Aug 2024 12:49:11 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=9073 Let's start unpacking Gen Con. What were some of my initial feelings about the con and what stood out to me?

The post Gen Con 2024 Recap first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
It’s been two days now since the end of Gen Con 2024. And thus far I’ve avoided con crud. But I know of people who didn’t. So hopefully if you were at Gen Con you have managed to avoid any sickness thus far. But that’s not what Gen Con is really about, it’s about a lot of gaming, a lot of people, and a lot of fun. So let’s talk about that and some of the highlights for Gen Con that I had. A lot of these topics I’ll dive into more later.

Gen Con Felt Smaller

So, for a gen con where everything had sold out completely, Gen Con felt smaller. This could be several reasons for it. I heard of a few people who couldn’t make it because of getting sick ahead of time. But that is a minor percentage of people. I think the reason it felt smaller is that there were fewer choke points.

Last year was the year of Lorcana. And I expect that nothing will match that, at least for a long time. But that meant that there were no extremely long lines. A lot of people went for a lot of different things. So while some aisles at the start of every day had lines, it wasn’t as consistent. And, for example, I stood in line for Devir’s room to get a game (watch the Gen Con Haul video coming up), but that was from 7:30 until 8.

Demoing Prototypes

This is one element of Gen Con that I love every time that I go. I like to try and learn about new games or games that aren’t even out yet. And I got to play three new games that are either coming to retail or crowdfunding. You can pre-order Mistborn from Brotherwise Games on sites like Game Nerdz already. And then the two for crowdfunding we have Defenders of the Dictionary coming to Kickstarter and Stardriven: Gateway on Gamefound which you can find here. I will write more up on all of these later.

Seeing People Again

This year I didn’t meet up with as many people, but the Man vs Meeple event was as fun as ever. But it is great to always see people who I know there. And to meet new people. And to play games with new people and just experience the con that way. Plus it’s always fun to learn a new game and teach a new game while at an event like that. Plus with prizes (again haul video coming up for more details), food, and being off your feet it’s a good time. I got to play Rebel Princess twice and Comic Hunters two games that are now ones that I like a lot.

Going with Friends

So, the past two years I’ve gone to Gen Con by myself. It has been great because I just kind of wander and do my own thing. But this year, going with friends reminded me that it can be nice to do that as well. Going with friends didn’t mean that I wandered and did my own thing that much less. It meant that I didn’t do a car drive by myself. And it meant that I got to meet up with people a bit more. And I got to chat about the day and what people were excited about each evening.

Going in a group made the drive a lot faster. Conversations were had and better friendships were formed. Plus I love hearing people get excited about on a day. What new thing they found or bought. What they want to check out the next day, all of that is great.

Final Thoughts

Now there are more highlights than that. I need to try and think about Saturday and mark down my game plays that day. Because I failed, again to track everything. But I know of a few games that I need to mark down plays for. Including one of the prototypes that I played, actually, I think two of them that day.

Did you go to Gen Con? If so, what were some of your highlights. If not, what do you want to know about from this convention?

My Early GenCon Event List https://nerdologists.com/2024/05/my-early-gencon-event-list/ https://nerdologists.com/2024/05/my-early-gencon-event-list/#respond Mon, 20 May 2024 11:46:16 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=8944 What events did I get into for GenCon and which ones did I miss out on? I might add in another as it gets closer, but I like my schedule.

The post My Early GenCon Event List first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
GenCon kicked off it’s events sign-up yesterday. And myself and two of the people I am going with all jumped on right at 11 AM Central (Noon Eastern) to get our events. We had varying luck, one person at 400, myself at 4000 and the other at 7000 in the GenCon queuing. So we got a variety of events, but let me run through the ones that I’m signed up for, for sure. Times not included.

GenCon Events

Too Many Bones

This one is because I own the game. I own the game, yet I don’t play my copy because I know how to play but don’t know how to play. I like with bigger games, I’m thinking of Burncycle last year, Lost Ruins of Arnak and Dwellings of Eldervale the year before, it’s a chance to learn the game. Someone who knows how to play the game is going to sit down and teach you the game. And then, for me, that means that I now can more easily teach and play it at home.

This year for GenCon Too Many Bones is that game. Chip Theory games I think are good for the list. A lot of them are complex with pretty dense rulebooks. So GenCon is a chance to really be able to learn a game and get the experience. At four players that might not be ideal experience, but it’ll be a good first one and help me get the game under my belt.

Stardriven: Gateway

Next up coming from Rock Manor Games is Stardriven: Gateway. I wrote about this one when I wrote about the Gamefound Feast. It still intrigues me as a game that has story to it and going to feel like an interesting space adventure. And while it is supposed to still have the grand vastness of space to it, it’s more about managing your crew. You take care of yourself and focus in on that crew level and the big things will happen.

Star Wars Unlimited

You know I like Star Wars Unlimited. This is mainly for two reasons that I want to get into this event. It’s another learn to play event, I don’t need to learn to play. But I think you might get a promo card, which is Grogu. But even if you don’t, it’s going to be playing with the new set. Yes that set will have been out for under a month, but it’s still under a month. And for an hour long session, it’s going to be a fun time to play the new stuff that I haven’t seen much.

Rebel Princess

This is one that I can’t remember if I’ve already ordered the game or not. I just know when I saw the game announced I was intrigued. You’re a princess who is basically trying not to be a princess in the “traditional” sense. And to do that, you’re playing a trick taking game. I like trick taking games a lot, so it was an easy one for me to consider picking up. And when I’m considering picking it up (or maybe did) then it’s one that I’d like to try at GenCon.

Metrorunner

Metrorunner is one that I added to the list because it’s from Thunderworks games. I haven’t played anything from Thunderworks that isn’t part of their Roll Player setting. Metrorunner is not from that setting so it’s going to be the first. I’m intrigued by the sound of it. And it’s a chance to try a game that I passed on when they did crowdfunding. So I’m curious to see what it’ll be like.

The Dice Tower

16th Annual Dice Tower Awards

Last year I went to the Dice Tower Awards and it was fun. I almost didn’t sign up for a ticket again this year. And I might have passed, or I would have passed had I gotten into one time for an event. But I like going to the Dice Tower Awards. They are fun, and it’s a chance to make that first day of GenCon last a little bit longer. But it is also a chance to not be on your feet for the whole time which is nice as well.

Is there anything super special about the event, not really? But it’s a fun event. It feels like a chance to just enjoy and celebrate games. For people like myself, I know a lot of the games already, but for the people that I’m going with, it’ll be a chance for them to see what a lot of the big newer games are.

Mistborn Deck Building Game

Finally, the event that I only got into because one of the people was in the 400’s on the queue. Mistborn is a setting that I like, don’t love. It is from Brandon Sanderson, an author who I really love. When he is having a game made from Brotherwise Games, I am interested. Plus I like deck building games a lot, so even more interested.

Why did these sell out so fast? Firstly, it’s a preview of the game, it might even almost be somewhat of a playtest of the game. I am not 100% sure on that. So people like those events, and it’s the first chance to see a game that is coming to crowdfunding. But it is also Brandon Sanderson so people will be interested because of that. The fact it filled up fast was not a surprise for me.

Final Thoughts and What I Missed Out On

Firstly, I like the number of events that I got into this year. For me, this is about the sweet spot in number of events. A few more than sometimes overlap prime walking the dealer hall time, but don’t worry, I plan to do a lot of that as well.

I didn’t miss out on much. Two Mistborn deck builder events were full before i got to my sign-up. But I got in another way, so that is amazing. Then a Stormlight RPG Demo, it is Brandon Sanderson’s series I like better, I am not surprised. The Elder Scrolls, a game coming from Chip Theory Games, I am already all in on it. It is not out yet, so people want to see it. And with Too Many Bones, I will be playing the game it is based off of. Finally, SETI, another learn to play event for a new game. I think it looks interesting, but I don’t feel bad missing on it.

Did you get into the events that you wanted?
