The three choices of number and bonus works really well and has been fun in other games in the system, but the classic Welcome To is the best still.

Now, I like this and 7 Wonders Duel very similarly, but only one is staying in my collection and that is going to be the Lord of the Rings one. But both do similar things and are great games. This one, I find, cleans up some things like no end game scoring. And while I find the end game without the win in one of the three game ends if you get them situations isn’t 100% satisfying, going for those other goals is great. And they most of the time do pull of the win with them whether that’s getting the ring to Mordor or getting support from the various groups.

48. Heat: Pedal to the Metal

Not my favorite racing game, but Heat: Pedal to the Metal is up there. I really like how the game works pretty quickly, so it has that racing feel, but you still make a lot of meaningful decisions in it. Heat is all about managing the heat on your engine so that you can push the corners at the right time. But the more heat you get, the more it clogs up your hand and then you need to back off and let the engine cool down. It’s just a clever and enjoyable system that’s easy enough to teach and gives you a great racing feel.

Ohanami and the next game on the list are the two smallest ones. Ohanami is a great game for pulling out and playing a round or two of when you want a simple game to play. But it offers some fun with the twist that it provides on scoring and how you need to set-up the cards into the columns as you draft them. The drafting and adding always needing to be higher or lower than the top or bottom card in a column, at least if you want to play them, is fun as well. It’s not that common for someone to be stuck without something to play, but if you make that happen it’s fun.

Mind Up! is another one of those games that just really works for me. There is so much luck in the game as you try and get the cards that you want, it kind of feels like it shouldn’t work. But at the same time, you always have a decision to make that matters and just enough knowledge. The fact that the order of the cards and how you want to fill in to get points changes each round while the cards in your hand don’t as much is a really fun system. Because, yes, I am guessing what is going to work to get the card I wanted, but I might remember a little what you have.

I guess Schadenfreude is the third small game on the list. But it’s a pretty different game because it’s a trick taking game and it’s a trick taking game that does some really interesting things. Mainly it’s about not flying too close to the sun and getting burned as you try and get points. You get points and lose points based off of what is played into the trick that doesn’t match your suit. The other piece is you want to get as close as you can to 40 points. If you go over and everyone who goes over, that causes you to lose. But someone has to because that determines the end of the game.

I like the mechanisms of “I split, you choose” in games, one of my favorite two player games has that in it. And The Great Split is primarily that in a game. Each round you are splitting up your hand of cards and then your opponent on the left picks one of them. You are doing that at the same time with the cards passed to you. Everyone is trying to optimize the contracts that they are getting the points from the various arts they are getting. But at it’s heart, the game is “I split, you choose” and it just works.

Two dexterity games in a row and my two favorite dexterity games. First is ICECOOL, this is a game that was around my Top 10 for a long time because it’s just a simple but fun game. It’s been passed as my favorite by the other because that one has more customization.

ICECOOL is all about either being a penguin sneaking out of class to get fish or the hall monitor who is trying to catch them. The flicking works well and the ability to jump the penguin over walls is fun, assuming you don’t jump too far. Plus the box set-up and how it comes together is really fast and fun.

PitchCar is the other dexterity game of the two and the one that I like just little bit better. PitchCar is another racing game as well,. This one is about flicking race cars, discs, around a track and being the first to cross the finish. It’s another game that is very simple to play but so fun. And this one gets the nod because of the track and how you make as hard or easy a track as you want. Do you want a loop or an overpass, you can do that, or you can just play with straightaways and some turns if you want the game to be faster.

Finally we have Metal Gear Solid a game that took a while to come out, but that is so worth it. Metal Gear Solid is a cooperative game where you want to sneak around as much as go in guns blazing. And that element is a blast for the game because it makes it feel different than a lot of games with minis. I like that the game also has a campaign, which I need to play, and one off scenarios that you can try and complete. And to add to that, while the enemy movement takes a moment to understand, the player turns are streamlined really well.

That counting down of tiles as they leave the board and new ones are placed out as a timer is great in this game. And it is spooky, which is hard for a board game to do.

Maybe your spooky is better with lots of giant monsters and a scenario where you know an elder being is going to come eventually. Cthulhu: Death May Die, called CDMD or Death May Die in the hobby, is a big game with minis and madness. You want to push your insanity up a little bit so that you unlock new powers and abilities to defeat the ancient horrors. But too much insanity and you knocked out of the game. This is a good beer and pretzels sort of game.

Moving on from the spooky games, we have Captain Flip. This is tile laying game about filling up your pirate ship with crew. Every crew member is going to give you points, positive or negative, in some way. When you draw a tile you see one side. Then you decide do you want to place that onto your ship, or do you want flip it? If you flip it you are stuck on that side and have to put that down. It’s this balance of optimizing your score, playing out pirates, and pushing your luck as you flip the tiles.

Cartographers used to be my Top Roll and Write style game. Now it is dropping a bit, some because there are so many roll and write games that I like, and some because I haven’t played it recently. But I really enjoy this one and really enjoy making a map. I like the interactivity of the monsters who I play it on my opponents board in the worst spot possible for them. And I like how you score four different things, but depending on the season you score two and the season determines the two. It’s one I need to play again.

Do you like word games but it seems like some people are just better at them? Letter Jam is a cooperative word game, so everyone needs to work together. In this game you don’t know the letters or the word you have. But everyone else can see one letter of yours at a time, and you can see one letter of everyone else’s. You all need to give good clues of words so people can figure out what their letter is. Say you have an “O” if I give a clue that shows you that the word uses the letters “FR[your letter]M” you can figure out what it is. But everyone needs to figure theirs out and figure out their word.

Can’t Stop is another push your luck game to make the list. I like a good push your luck game like this one, Push, or Flip 7. They are easy to teach and play. In this one you want to get to the top of 3 columns. If you do that, you win. How do you do that, well, you roll dice and then split them into two pairs of two. The twist is that you only move up on three numbers per turn. So I might roll and get a combo to make ten and eleven, if I am not going up on ten or eleven, I lose my progress. But if I play it too safe, I lose.

Do you like the movie Independence Day? Did you grow up playing the game Space Invaders. Under Falling Skies is a game that gives me the feel of both of those things. You need to research how to stop the mother ship while keeping too many of the smaller ships from making it to earth. And it uses an interesting die system. The higher the die, the more powerful the actions you can take are. But also the faster those little ships descend towards earth. I love that balancing act puzzle of the game.

So Clover! is a cooperative party game. It is one that is easy to teach in person and hard to explain. Basically you create a grid of cards that have words on every side. So you need to connect the two words per side with another word. Then everyone else is trying to get those words back onto the board in the right order, but the twist is there is an extra word thrown in. Plus often times the words are not easy to match. The better you do that as a group the more points you get.

Finally rounding out this 10 is Rallyman: DIRT. This is another push your luck game and a racing game. In it you plot you course down the track and then get a choice. You either roll one die at a time which allows you to stop before you spin out and bad things happen. Or you roll all the dice at once. Why roll all at once? Well, when you roll all at once, you take negative one second to your time per die rolled. So you can reduce your overall time if you don’t spin out.

How To Play Toy Battle

Toy Battle is an area control game where you seek to beat your opponent by either gaining dominance in an areas and points for that, or by reaching your opponents base. That is pretty standard, I feel for a game like this.

The actions are very simple for your turn. You either draw two troops to add to your troops in hand. Or you play out a troop. Most troops are going to give you an ability on them as well. When you play out a troop it needs to be adjacent to your base or connect to it by other troops. You play your troop either in an empty spot that meets those criteria or on top of an opponents troop that has a smaller value than your troop. You go back and forth taking turns until one person hits one of the win conditions for the game.

What Doesn’t Work

It’s not a major negative for the game, but this game feels like things that have been done before. I said League of Legends, and I really get that feel. And the toy theme works, but it’s a theme that I’ve seen done before. Mainly it feels like it’s a familiar idea with the lane battler and does it do enough to stand out from other games like that.

What Works

I like the speed of the game. Some games drag out when you play them on BGA. But Toy Battle hasn’t thus far. It helps that it’s a two player game, but even with that you need responsive players. And maybe I’ve just been lucky with responsive players, but the game moves quickly. I think the two options for your turn really help make this game accessible for a lot of players. And the two player limit also makes it go very quickly.

I enjoy how each toy has a different power. I think the lowest number has no power, but otherwise they do. Some of them let you break the game in terms of where you place out another character. Or they might let you pull back a troop who has a power you want to use again. While they are not complex, it adds in some fun strategy to the game that way. And I think it’s an area where the game could expand in the future, give another set of troops for players to swap into the game.

And the two ways that you win work. I’ve lost to someone reaching my base. And I’ve won by just controlling enough areas. Each of them seem doable in any game. And you need to consider the troops you are drawing, or the paths your opponent is building to determine your strategy. While the game isn’t super tense when you play it on BGA, I think with the two win conditions it would be a lot more tense in person.

Who is Toy Battle For?

I think this is for people who want that high interaction and strategy in a game. It is about outthinking your opponent and utilizing the abilities to the best of your ability. But it’s kind of like Root, in some ways, or Critters at War. It is going to give you that tense war element of a game, really, but it has a cute theme on top of it. So, I think this is for people who want that interaction and area control and maybe have a partner or friend they game with often who doesn’t like that as much, but this theme just might work.

My Grade for Toy Battle

So, I compare Toy Battle to a lot of things. And as I was writing about it, I realized, I enjoy this game pretty well. Right now it’s just a pre-order, but I might grab this game when it comes out. Because, for me, it takes some things about lane battling that I enjoy and gives me a nice area control element with it as well. And it works well for two players. Often times area control at two players isn’t that interesting, but here it’s good.

And the powers and abilities of the troops that you place out is another big selling point. You need to figure out your strategy and break up your opponents. And sometimes that means playing out a troop just for it’s ability so that you can mess with something. And I feel like as I play more, the more I can mine the depths of different strategies with the troops.

That said, there are a couple of things that keep me from just gushing over the game as a two player game like I did Zenith on BGA. I think that’s because the game feels a bit more familiar than some. Now, it’s better than Gold’n’Crash where that game was too long for a two player game. This one gets the timing right, but as I play it more, I want to see if I feel like playing the game or if it just makes me want to play other two player games.

70. Sagrada

• Build the most beautiful stained glass window

This game is just a great drafting game experience. The ease of play is wonderful as well because you draft a die and place it while other people are going on drafting their own dice. Especially with the 5-6 player expansion, which can be worked into the lower player counts, it makes it so you don’t need to spend time with what others are doing. But both ways to draft the dice and place the dice are mainly the same and really good. Plus the way you need to play the dice to not have colors or numbers adjacent makes a great puzzle.

69. Mesozooic

• Slide your dino-themed park together in this light filler game

Mesozooic has a couple of great elements to the game. Firstly it’s drafting, and I really love drafting. But the game is more than that. You also need to complete a slide puzzle. You see you draft 11 cards and shuffle them up to create a 3 tall and 4 wide grid with an open spot. Then you slide them around frantically for 45 seconds like a slide puzzle to get the best dino-park that you can. It’s silly, light, and a very fun time.

68. 7 Wonders Duel

• Draft cards and build wonders in this head to head game

I like this game better than 7 Wonders. Mainly because I played 7 Wonders a few times at two and it isn’t a good game. 7 Wonders Duel is great that way, as expected. But the game is more than just a better version, I think that the drafting is very clever. I love the trying to avoid revealing a card that is good for your opponent. And some of the cards being face down so unknown until they are revealed. And the two side ways to win with science and military add in tension to the game as well. You can’t just draft your best engine, even though you want to.

67. Icecool

• Help your penguins sneak out of class and get fish in this dexterity game

Yes, the theme of Icecool is that simple and I love it for me. I love the flicking element of the game, it’s just fun. And I really enjoy the silliness of the game. This is one of my favorites for a late night of gaming. Just sit around and flick penguins and have a laugh. It is possible to get very good at the game, but it’s also a game where players can just have a great shot by pure luck. To me that is what makes it a fun game for all ages.

66. Super Fantasy Brawl

• Choose your team and face off against an opponent in an arena

This game is coming back, kind of. I say kind of, I expect that most of the game is going to be the same, but CMON bought it from the now defunct Mythic Games. So I want to see what CMON is going to do with it. Because I love the simplicity of the game. Super Fantasy Brawl has you activate three different colors of cards each round. And you can do some on defense as well, but that means you won’t do as much on your turn. Then you either try to knock out your opponents for trophies or complete goals, or most likely, do both. The game is strategic but also fast and easy to play.

65. Trailblazers

• Create the best hiking, biking, and kayaking routes

Another drafting game on the list. This is the last one for this time, but there are four and possible five if you count drafting your team in Super Fantasy Brawl. In this one you draft cards to create trails. I love the trail creation aspect of the game because you really need to strategize as to how you’re going to do that. And I like how the game becomes more complex in your trail creation throughout as you add in other hubs that you need to start and leave from for each of the three routes.

64. Mind Up!

• Play the right number to collect and create sets of colors

This game is so easy to learn and play. I actually wrote about it yesterday in that exact context, so you can checkout the article after this. But it’s simply play out a card simultaneously with the other players. Then you look to see who played the lowest number, they get the lowest number from the middle. And after that it’s about trying to get the colors you want into the highest scoring column you have. The whole thing is just a really easy to play and simple time. I explain it better in the video, by the way.

63. So Clover!

• Can you find the right pair of words based off of one word clues?

This game is always tricky for me to explain. Basically you have cards with four words, one on each side. And you have four of them making this little four by four grid. Each side is going to have two words, if that all makes sense and you’re picturing it. You need to create a one word clue so people can guess and put it back into that same order. Not that hard, well, it is when the words don’t connect at all. And there is going to be a mystery fifth card added in. But if you give the right clues you can lead people down the right path to recreate it.

62. The Castles of Burgundy

A game that I wouldn’t have expected that I like. But I really enjoy The Castles of Burgundy, a game of using dice to purchase and place new things into your land. As well as using them to sell goods, and get workers that let you manipulate your dice. There is a bunch going on and I feel like I need to nail down my strategy for it. But I really enjoy what this offers and it’s a new type of puzzle for me to spend time diving into as a game. I even have the fancy version coming that alea did with Awaken Realms.

61. Letter Jam

• Work together to figure out what everyone’s letters are because you can’t see your own

If you know what Hanabi is that will help with it. But Letter Jam is a game where you can’t see the letters that form your word. Other players can see one of them at a time but they can’t see theirs. So you give clues to help people narrow down what their letters might be for their jumbled word. Of course everyone needs to get theirs figured out by the end of the game, but it’s cooperative so the challenge is great but fun to tackle.

80. Flamecraft

• Deliver on the most goals and score points as you play out adorable little dragons who help around the town

This game immediately grabs you with the artwork. The dragons are amazing, and Sandara Tang gives each of them such great personality. Beyond that the game is simple but fun, you go to a location and are either activating the cards and dragons there, or adding some, or spending resources to complete goals. As the locations get more and more dragons the more powerful they become. It’s a great ramping mechanism for a simple game. Though the game is not fast one, which might be my only knock on it.

79. Just One

• Work together to get the guesser to the right answer with just one word

A party game on this section. I’m not sure, I expect that there are two more party games on the list, but we’ll see. I honestly have forgotten. But Just One is a great cooperative party game. One person is the guesser and everyone else needs to write down a one word clue to get the guesser to guess their one word. Sounds simple, right, but if you double up with anyone, now both those words are gone. That means that an easy clue can become very hard very fast. So you want to be obscure with your clue, but not so obscure that it won’t lead the person to the right answer.

This one is a fun roll and write. While I love a ton of roll and write games where they have a lot of combos, this one is a different type of puzzle. In On Tour two dice are rolled and players each place the numerical combinations on two spots on their board. But there are rules as to where they can go. And you may want to watch the city to gain bonus points, but if it won’t connect well to your route, is it worth it to push your luck?

• Build up your settlement and play your mini game in this cozy gaming experience

Open Owl Studios went into making Mythwind with the plan of making a cozy game. So something that works well like a Stardew Valley or an Animal Crossing. They do that by creating a peaceful story world to play in, there are interesting elements to it though. And then each person plays their own little minigame. I demonstrate what the minigame for the farmer looks like. And One Stop Co-op Shop and Meet Me At The Table play some of the other ones. It’s just a unique feeling game that is fun, and relaxing to play.

76. Betrayal at House on the Hill

• Explore a haunted house but beware, someone is going to be come the traitor

This is a game that I still love though I haven’t played it in a few years. I fully recognize that the game has issues. When you sit down to play you know that the haunt may not work as planned because either the traitor is going to be overpowered or the other survivors will be. And the haunts themselves have janky rules. But I still love the game anyways because it’s thematic, silly, and just a fun time.

75. Clever 4Ever

• Another combotastic game in the Clever line of roll and writes

I don’t know what else to say about this one. Clever 4Ever offers a ton of fun combos and a few different feeling sections of your sheet. How Wolfgang Warsch keeps on coming up with different and interesting ways to handle rolling five dice, using one, getting rid of lower ones and then rolling them again, I don’t know. But he does and this one is great, I especially like the sections where you can fill in different shapes depending on the number rolled. That element really feels different.

Clever 4Ever is either new to my Top 100 Games (of all time) this year or it just made the cut last year. I know I hadn’t had the game for long.

• Learn spells and feed your familiar to get the most points

This is a really simple game. All it is when you boil it down is set collection. You collect materia, you get enough of a color, you learn that spell. Then you use that spell you learned to collect more materia or learn new spells easier. Each spell you learn gives you points, or you can just feed the materia to your familiar for more points as well. The is fast, and there is a fun puzzle as to how you can optimize your spell usage as you get into the game.

Another engine building game. Century: Golem Edition again, like SpellBook, has quick snappy turns. In this game it’s all about hand management and using those cards in hand to get more and upgrade crystals. Then you use those crystals to grab Golems that are going to score you points. But you literally just play a card, trade crystals for a golem, pick-up all your cards, or buy a new card. One of those things on a turn and the game just flies.

72. New Frontiers

New Frontiers is another engine building game. In New Frontiers you are doing it at a space level though, colonizing new planets, getting new technologies, fighting and conquering planets. All of that done through action selection where what action you pick gives you a bonus. But, everyone else is going to follow along with that action as well. So what is the best action for you and maybe not a great one for other players? I believe that New Frontiers is new to my Top 100 Games (of all time) as well though it isn’t a new game.

71. Meadow

Meadow is another gorgeous game. I start out and end this section with beautiful games. In Meadow you want to score points by playing out creatures, taking pictures, and gaining trinkets. But to do that you need to build up your meadow from the land type up through bugs and maybe eventually all the way into deer, foxes, or other creatures. How you pick the cards you get is great. You use a fence post that tells you how far into a row or column you are picking. So you need to determine the best spots to play to get all the cards that you want and hope no one blocks you.

Final Thoughts

Firstly, let me know what your favorite of these games are. I obviously enjoy all of the tones in my Top 100 Games (of all time) 2024 Edition, so Meadow needs to be my favorite. But in terms of easily getting it to the table, I’m kind of feeling a big old stream and playthrough of all the clever games on Malts and Meeples. How To Play So Clover!

In So Clover, each player is given a four leafed clover. This has little spots to slot in cards, four little square ones. On each edge of the card is a word, so when they are slotted into the clover, you have two words per side. Then, without the other players seeing how those cards are on the clover, players write down one hidden clue per side of the clover, so four clues total.

Then removing the card, players add in one more and shuffle up their cards face down. Once everyone has completed, you go in a circle with the other players trying to match up how the cards were originally without help, obviously, from the player who but down the clues. The team gets points for how many they get in the right spot and oriented in the right way, and how fast, many guesses, it takes them.

What Doesn’t Work?

One annoyance that I have with the game is manipulating the clover to write down the clues. Only because the cards, while they hold on pretty well, can drop out. I think the times I’ve played it, I’ve had one fall out, generally face down, that I need to put back in. That means holding it at a steeper angle where other players are less likely to see, means it’s more likely you are dropping a card.

Another thing, not a massive issue, is that there’s some downtime. If I write my clues quickly and you write your clues slowly. I wait then for everyone else to finish. Now, not a massive issue, no one takes too long that I’ve seen, but know there is that downtime.

What Works?

The puzzle of the game is great. I like trying to guess what other players have put together and what they are thinking. Since you are matching two words per side, people tackle that different ways. I might do something that prefixes or suffixes, like Crescent and Walk, I would do moon. Or you might link the words with something that’s between them. And some links aren’t that great, but if you have a strong link on the other clover leaf that can help orient a card.

The scoring also works in this game. I complain about scoring fairly often in party games. There is not good end. Here, every players board is guessed. Then the game ends. And the scoring is simple, you get one point per correct one you get, so up to a total of four. But if you guess all of them the first time, you get six points. So in a four player game the max is 24 points, very simple.

I find the concept of the extra card interesting as well. An extra card throws in a monkey wrench that no one can expect. You might write all perfect clues, but the wrong extra card can mess everything up. And the person who wrote all the clues can do nothing to stop it. But hopefully there is a clever way for the players guessing to get it still. And most of the time there is. Also, most of the time it messes it up.

Finally, I like being clever with my clues. So Clover! is named because of the shape, but also because it is really clever. Sometimes your best bet is to give a really strong clue for one of the cards, and hope that the other card just gets oriented right. This is where the extra card really can mess stuff up. But I still feel clever with the clues I put down.

Who is This For?

I want to say everyone, but I think So Clover is a bit more of a gamers party game. Now it is not that hard a game. I think that mom and dad can probably play it. But you need to know the audience you pull it out for. Repos Productions other game, Just One, works in any situation, So Clover! just being that much cleverer limits it.

You also need to trust players not to dump all their cards or show their board. I don’t see this as an major issue, but that might limit it from someone who doesn’t have a steady hand. You get around this by getting some shields to hide it and you don’t need to pick it up at all. But that is adding to the game itself.

Final Thoughts – So Clover!

I really enjoy this game. I really enjoy Just One. And obviously, I compare the two because of the company. I think that Just One will travel more to holiday gatherings than So Clover! will. But I also see So Clover! getting played more at game nights.

If I were to say what So Clover! is like, it’s the combination of Just One and Cross Clues, two of my favorite party games. So I am not surprised that I really like So Clover!, so much that it might be preferred to both of the other games. And I think that So Clover! is going to be one that gets played a lot at conventions and any get togethers.
