The post Anime Round-Up (Too Many To Count) first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
It’s been way to long since I’ve done an anime round-up. I did one at the end of last year and I have been on the job hunt for a long time so I’ve had a chance to watch a ton of anime. Some of these will get full reviews later on, but let’s talk about everything that I can think of that I’ve watched. And yes, there is going to be a ton of anime to talk about, and yes, I’ll try and give a brief grade or something so you know if they are worth watching. And there are a ton of them, so don’t expect more than a sentence or two on each anime.

Anime Round-Up First Half of 2025

The Apothecary Diaries

The Apothecary Diaries is a slow burn romance with a lot of mysteries thrown in. This one is great because of the main character, Maomao. Even without suspecting that there is a romance of some sort, the story just works well.

I Left my A-Rank Party to Help My Former Students Reach the Dungeon Depths

A fun anime about a hero who is overlooked because of his class. Of course turns out that he’s extremely powerful. It is a trope that works well and in this case, I think it’s done in a more entertaining way than most.

To Be Hero X

This one is pretty different. First off a lot of the animation is 3D and it looks amazing. Plus it’s vignettes around a whole lot of different heroes. What if you got your powers not through some accident or something like that, but because people trusted you? That’s the plot and it’s really interesting, this is a very good anime.

I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability

Honestly, this one is just okay. I find that it was solid background noise anime. Not an Isekai, the character is in the same world, but they come back and they are more powerful. Plus they keep on getting roped into things while trying to hide their power. It’s a very common trope now, the “I’m actually really powerful” trope.

The Shiunji Family Children

What would happen to a family if they found out they weren’t really related? That’s the premise of this romance anime, they find out that they aren’t related, and turns out that all the girls might figure out they kind of like one of their brothers. It sounds like a bad anime premise but the show is actually well done and a good romance anime.

Once Upon a Witch’s Death

A witch learns of their death, it’s going to happen no matter what in a year, unless they collect tears of joy. Well, that’s easier said than done, especially when you’re a teenage girl who has an attitude of a 30 year old man. It’s a heartfelt and fun show that uses humor around dealing with big events in a way I wouldn’t expect from an anime.

Witch Watch

An ogre is contracted to be a familiar for a witch. This witch, unknown to her, is slated to die in a year. Now that sounds pretty serious and very fantasy, well, an ogre is just a very powerful humanoid looking creature and it’s set in the “real world.” And the premise comes off more as a slice of life anime than anything else. This is a very cute and great show. Something that feels really different.

The Brilliant Healers New Life in the Shadows

I mentioned the super powerful trope, well here is another anime like that. The healer gets kicked out of the adventuring party her is in and sets up a clinic in the slums. But it turns out that he’s so ridiculously powerful that his life isn’t going to stay as normal as he hoped. It’s a classic trope at this point, but I like this anime as one that doesn’t fall too far down the trope path.

The Gorilla God’s Go To Gal

In a world where everyone gets a blessing our main character ends up with the blessing of the Gorilla God. It’s extremely rare but also makes her stand out and she doesn’t want to standout. This anime is another super powerful trope and is mixed with a nice romance/reverse harem without being a fan service anime. I really enjoy this anime as just a fun one to watch.

Yamada-Kun and the 7 Witches

Yamada-Kun is a tough guy, but when he accidentally switches bodies with the smartest girl in school hijinks, mystery, and romance occur. I think this anime is great because it does such a good job of blending everything. And it tells it’s story in just a short period of time.

Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie

I need to finish watching this one, but I paused because I think my wife will like it as well. But it’s a cute romance anime where the guy is a bad luck magnet and his awesome girlfriend is always there for him. It’s a wholesome romance and one that is just enjoyable to watch with low stakes.

Love Tyrant

Love Tyrant is a harem romance anime with a bunch of comedy in it. I found that there were times and characters who were fun, but overall it’s an anime that just repeats the same jokes over and over again. Love Tyrant is a background noise anime at best.

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

I read the first manga/arc of this a while ago. And I was surprised with how much I liked it, then I dove into the anime and Rascal doesn’t disappoint. This anime surprised me with how genuinely good it is and how it dives into this world of mysteries in an interesting way with great romance. The title doesn’t help it, but check it out.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom

What happens if you get Isekai’ed into an Otome game, but instead of being the hero you are the villainess? That’s the plot of this anime and it’s one that is fine. It’s all about the main character trying to avoid the “doom flags” for her character that will lead to a bad ending. Of course everything she does changes the plot more than she’d expect. It’s a fine romance/harem/reverse harem anime.

Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World Season 2

I already reviewed the first season at least shortly. This is an action romance anime and it works well. The second season is almost as strong as the first. It takes the classic Romeo and Juliet sort of thing and works with it. I like it for a romance anime that doesn’t try and do too much, plus has some fun fights.

The Unaware Atelier Meister

See the super powerful trope again. This one is probably the most tiring of them that I watched. I am not 100% sure why I watched it all. It’s not bad it’s just really derivative. I want it to add something knew and it doesn’t.

Campfire Cooking in Another World With My Absurd Skill

What would life be like in another world if you could buy stuff and have it show up from your local corner store? Turns out a whole lot more powerful than you’d think. This is just a fun anime. Is it kind of background noise, sure, but it is also different.

Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It My Life Had It Made

A loser to winner story where the main character is a nobody and accidentally eats what is known as a Fruit of Evolution in a new world. It’s what you expect from an anime like this. It isn’t bad but also isn’t good.

The Ossan Newbie Adventurer Trained To Death By The Most Powerful Party Became Invincible

This one was way more fun than I expected it’d be. It is still the super powerful trope, but now you take it with an older character who is just starting out as an adventurer. Instead of it being a hot young upstart, he has years and wisdom on his side. So he just takes everything in stride. I love this anime. It’s a lot of tropes, but also just a lot of fun.

Tsukigakirei As The Moon, So Beautiful

Two quite kids fall in love. That is the basics of the plot. But there is more than that, and it’s just a fun time. It’s not really a slow burn romance too of will they won’t they which I really enjoyed.

How Not To Summon A Demon Lord

A person gets summoned to a game world when NPC’s in that world try and summon them. The spell bounces back on them, and now they are under the Demon Lord’s control. It’s not a great anime just one that I thought I should checkout. I think it is decent background noise.

Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything with Low-Level Spells

This one for some reason worked for me as a manga and as an anime. Again a weak to strong story where everyone abandons him but turns out his ability can be turned extremely powerful. I think it’s because he is a less jaded character than some in this sort of story. I this that Failure Frame is a fun anime.

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody

Imagine getting stuck in a video game that you are making. That’s what happens to the main character, though it’s not like SAO (Sword Art Online) style of stuck, this is just a standard Isekai. I think that the anime is okay.

Isekai Cheat Magician

You get summoned to another world and you are very powerful. And your friend trying to save you from being summoned gets sent there too. This is a fun Isekai. I don’t know that I’d say seek it out, but I’d recommend it over some others on the list.

Wind Breaker

A tough guy wants to go to a tough school. Turns out that the tough school always has a heart and wants to protect their town. Wind Breaker is not an unexpected twist on what the main character expects but a nice one. I want to watch more of it, I just need to get back to it as Wind Breaker is a solid anime with good fights.

Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki Season 2

You already know that I love the first season. So I love that we got a second season and it didn’t disappoint. Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki might be my favorite anime so of course I love it.

I May Be A Guild Receptionist, But I’ll Solo Any Boss To Clock Out On Time

Super powerful, check. But this one again just falls into that category where it is just fun. The premise is that she doesn’t want to be a hero. She wants a nice normal job as a guild receptionist but the adventurers can’t take out the boss monsters. So she keeps on getting roped into fighting just in the hopes of avoiding overtime. I think this anime is fun with a really fun premise.

Solo Leveling Season 2

For me, I think that Season 2 of Solo Leveling might top Season 1. I like Solo Leveling a lot, both as a Manhwa and as an anime. The arc from season 2 I think starts to really create more depth for the main character. I think Solo Leveling is great.

Dr Stone

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one. Dr Stone is half a science show and half an adventure/survival anime. There are great heartfelt moments in it and still a lot of conflict between groups. I wish that some characters stuck around longer as main characters but that’s my main knock. Dr Stone is a good anime.

Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister

I like a lot of romance anime. Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister is a very good romance anime. And it’s not just who will he marry of these shrine maidens. There are good supernatural elements to it as well and you get to learn a lot about all the characters and what motivates them.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles Season 2

Another season 2 on the list, Mashle is always just a fun time. I really like it for what it is which is a lot of punching and fighting and crazy powers with a little plot in there as well.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Frieren is a masterpiece. I could stop at that. But the story of an elf who is beyond the main adventure and now is dealing with the mortality of the rest of her party and finding meaning in the world. I love it.

Masamune-Kun’s Revenge

Another not to hot anime. Though this one is a situation where the main character is maybe a bit wrong in what they are doing. After being betrayed for their feelings when they were younger, they wanted to get revenge by making that person fall for them later. It’s an entertaining anime that has a bit more plot than I expect it to. Not a stand-out but not bad.

The New Gate

I’ve read a lot of this manga. So for me this is a fun anime. The game world is over, you and logout now, aka SAO style world, but for the person who defeated the monster to end it all they are given a gate to a new world or so it might seem. It’s a fun but not all that unique anime.

In Another World with my Smartphone

Another Isekai but this time, what you had your smartphone? I heard a lot about this one I was underwhelmed by it. It’s not bad, it is just not all that exciting either.

2.5 Dimensional Seduction

This one surprised me in some ways. It tries to be a bit like My Dress-Up Darling that pulls off a lot of good conversation about cosplay and normalizing it. But this one is a bit more risque, somehow with a bit less plot to it. I think that 2.5 Dimensional Seduction is fun but not worth checking out over My Dress-Up Darling. Warning, lots of fan service.

Chained Soldier

Monsters in another world, a group of women to protect the real world from the monsters, and guys can’t get powers to do that unless they agree to basically become a slave. Doesn’t sound like a great premise, but somehow it turns into a harem anime with some fun fighting and more of a plot than I would expect. This one is fanservice forward like 2.5 Dimensional Seduction. But it’s a better story than I would expect.

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman

The second old man but is actually really powerful anime. I’m not sure I like it as much as the Ossan Newbie Adventurer but it’s in that same line of anime. I really like the main character though, again it’s this wise, humble and kind hearted character that an older protagonist can give you. I enjoy this anime quite well.

Domestic Girlfriend

A romance anime where the guy sleeps with his step sister while being in love with the other step sister. Of course the sleeping with the step sister is before they are step siblings. And he doesn’t realize it’s the sister of his crush who happens to be his teacher. It’s a weird who is in love and what is acceptable anime story that apparently if it were to continue has an ending people don’t like. I thought at the anime was fine.

The Dreaming Boy is a Realist

One final one and it’s another romance. The main character professes his love to his love every day. And she always says no. After getting hit in the head by a ball and having an epiphany of what he’s doing he stops and just is focused on the main girls happiness. But it turns out that when he stops she finds that she might actually have feelings for him. So not it’s a will they won’t they. I think this one is fun and I like the weird premise for it.

Final Thoughts

So let’s count. I think I got them all and I don’t think I watched any one Netflix, which is where I’d likely miss them from. I did skip over Summertime Render which is on Disney+/Hulu because I wrote a review on that one already. That’s just 41 anime. So if you want 5 that I’d recommend:

  1. Frieren
  2. Solo Leveling
  3. Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki
  4. The Ossan Newbie Adventurer Trained To Death By The Most Powerful Party Became Invincible
  5. The Apothecary Diaries

They aren’t in order. And I could come up with more that I’d recommend from the list as well. Is there one of the anime that catches your eye?

Are Legacy Board Games Worth It? https://nerdologists.com/2022/07/are-legacy-board-games-worth-it/ https://nerdologists.com/2022/07/are-legacy-board-games-worth-it/#respond Fri, 08 Jul 2022 14:03:23 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=7155 Why might it be worth it to get some legacy board games? Isn't it a waste if you can only play it a limited number of times?

The post Are Legacy Board Games Worth It? first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Legacy Board Games are a style of game that has been around for a little bit at this point. And while they never took over the market like people were worried about, there are a few that come out every year. Even with them being less common in the market, people do have concerns about them still, mainly, are they worth getting. But why is that a concern?

What Are Legacy Board Games?

A Legacy Game is going to be similar to a campaign game in some ways. You play the game over several sessions or sittings with an unfolding story, or at least tracking everything that you are doing, whether you win or lose and things like that.

But different than a campaign game you make changes to the game. This could be placing stickers on a board game, adding rules to the rule book, or tearing up cards. The idea is that every decision you make in a legacy game is going to be permanent and persistent. For example, in Risk Legacy you can blow up a country or area. In Pandemic Legacy your character can die or gain scars. And these don’t ever go away, or in the case of a blown up country ever come back.

The Issue

So you can see how that issue would start to present itself. If the game is played over a campaign style set number of games, and you can never go back and play it again, is it a good value?

The Case Against

Let’s use Pandemic Legacy as an example. In Pandemic Legacy you play through a year, that is 12 games, but if you lose in a month, you play through it again. So you are looking at 12 to 24 games that you can play. With that you are placing stickers on the board, rule book, and cards. When you are done with your year of games, you have a map that isn’t all that playable. You could maybe get down to base Pandemic, but there’d be extra things thrown in, and extra powers for characters that you’d need to ignore.

So is it worth it to buy, when it was first out, a $70 game? I could break down the math, say 12 games, four players, if you have that many, and an hour a game, so 48 hours of game time/entertainment time, which is a pretty cheap value for entertainment. Better than the movies. But once you are done, you are done, compared to other board games out there, or even base Pandemic, which is cheaper and you can play forever, the price per hour value will be higher.

The Case For

On the flip side, what case could be made for it. Firstly, because you are putting things down permanently on the board, decisions matter more. I don’t love it when it feels like there is a wrong decision, but decisions carry more weight when you are adding a scar to a character, or have a city yet again have an outbreak and the panic level rises yet again.

Plus, there is the unfolding story element of the game. Not all legacy board games have a ton of a story to them, but it provides an opportunity to play with story more. Now, campaign games can do that as well, but with less consequences, or consequences in different ways. For a legacy game, the story can unfold and change up the world completely or the board completely as you play. It might be hard to get into a city in Pandemic because of too many outbreaks in a location that is unique to you.

Are Legacy Board Games Good?

Legacy board games aren’t going to be for everyone, but generally, I do think that they are good. The reason for that is that they provide a different gaming experience than almost any other game out there. The experience they can bring because you make permanent choices adds that extra weight to a game like Pandemic that could get played out if you play it often enough.

I also think that the concern about how many times you can play a legacy game is less of an issue than most people think. Let me dive into that a bit more. Most people play a game, 4-10 times a year. Not play games, but just play a given game in their collection a limited number of times. Now, that might be different for you, and it is for everyone. Some games are played more, others are played less. But it’s rare for games to get played a ton of times if you have a few games in your collection.

So a legacy game provides 12 plays, on the lower end that is more than you’ll play most games in a year. That might be more than you play a game in three years. Let’s say you have Twilight Imperium and you can play that once or twice a year, that’s at minimum 6 to 12 years to equal the amount you’d play Pandemic Legacy likely in a year. Plus some legacy games offer modes to play post the legacy campaign.

Three Recommendations

I’ve played a number of legacy games, and some work better for me, others won’t make the list, Seafall, because it isn’t a great legacy game. So let’s talk about some legacy games that you could maybe checkout. If you are interested, these could be a good spot to jump into the mechanic and see if it is one for you.

Aeons End Legacy Game
Image Source: Indie Boards and Cards

My City

This one is pretty easy to recommend because it is a cheap game and a simple game. It is a tile laying game where you score points and get rewards with how well you build out your town each game. Compared to a lot of legacy games, this is much cheaper. You can probably find My City for about $20 right now, and the game is an easy one to get into.

It is a game with less story in it. It gives reasons for what you are adding to the rules throughout the game. But that story is very loose and it’s mainly just a tile laying game. But it adds in more things as you go, so the game feels like it develops and progresses over time. And you can play it once the game is done, granted with slightly different rules.

Pandemic Legacy Season 1

I’ve talked a lot about Pandemic Legacy and I’d be remiss to put it on the list. I think that Pandemic Legacy Season 1 is a good jumping in point to the series of games. There is Season 2 and Season 0 as well, but Pandemic Legacy Season 1 is the most like Pandemic and easy to pick up.

This has more of a story going throughout it and creates some very fun and interesting moments in it. There is even a very nice twist that happens as the game goes along. I won’t spoil when or where that is in the game, but it is interesting. It takes the Pandemic system and makes it so much more thematic as you play without changing up the game that much.

Aeon’s End Legacy

Finally, Aeon’s End Legacy. This is one that I played on Malts and Meeples and is a game that I really enjoy. It is a cooperative deck building game where you don’t shuffle the cards in the deck. Which I find fun because you can set-up some things as you go, or at least attempt to. Plus the different nemesis that you face offer a nice variety to the game.

Aeon’s End Legacy has less story than Pandemic Legacy, but more than My City. Where Aeon’s End Legacy really shines, though, is as a jumping in point for Aeon’s End. It takes a game that is not too complex, makes it a bit simpler and then slowly adds back in the complexity of the game.

Final Thoughts on Legacy Board Games

I don’t believe that everyone needs to have them or play them. But I also do not believe that because a game says legacy someone should immediately reject it. Often times the experiences in a legacy game are going to be more interesting or unique than those in other games that are one off. And they are something that can’t be replicated in that style of game. And as I talked about before, it’d probably be playing a game more often than people play most of their games.

But if you only own a few games and you play those few games all the time, I totally get not wanting to own a legacy game. They would reach the point where you wouldn’t be playing them anymore and it wouldn’t provide the value for you long term.

Though, I believe that story and experience element of the game does make it worthwhile. It is like a movie in a lot of ways. You go to the theater and you see a movie and hopefully you remember that experience and story. The same can be said for a legacy board game, you are paying for that memory of the story and experience, even if it’s not something you can play again. I do find it odd when people don’t bat an eye at going to a movie but a legacy game is something that is so obscene to them. The experience is not that different except the game is cheaper per hour of fun.

What is your favorite legacy board game? Or do you avoid them, if so, what is the reason?

Locke & Key Season 2 Review https://nerdologists.com/2022/05/locke-key-season-2-review/ https://nerdologists.com/2022/05/locke-key-season-2-review/#respond Mon, 09 May 2022 13:34:09 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=6987 Locke & Key season two has been out for a bit, but I finally got around to watch it. While closer to the comics, does it hold up to season one?

The post Locke & Key Season 2 Review first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Finally got through watching Locke & Key. And while that does sound like a bit of an knock on the season, it isn’t meant as one. I find that with shows, if there is a long enough gap, it is hard for me to immediately jump back into it. Especially with new shows always coming out. Locke & Key got caught up in that wash of shows.

Locke & Key Summary

No spoilers, but let’s talk about the premise and what happened in season one. Locke & Key is a young adult styled horror themed show about the Locke family. After Rendell, the father, is killed in seemingly a random attack by a student he was counseling, Nina takes her kids, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode back to Massachusetts and the Keyhouse, where Locke, grew up.

There, Bode meets an imaginary friend, or so he thinks, in the well house, Dodge. And he starts to hear strange whispering sounds that lead him to keys. These keys all of magical powers, like a key that opens a door to anywhere. Unfortunately, Dodge is not just an imaginary friend, but an entity from another dimension who bonded to Lucas, one of Rendell’s friends from high school, years ago.

Dodge wants the keys, and in particular wants the Omega key, one that will open the door blocking off the portal. Using the student who attacked and killed Rendell, Dodge tries to get the keys that she needs in order to complete their plan. Meanwhile, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode are dealing with a new town and that adults don’t know about the keys. Eventually, though, they manage to defeat Dodge and throw her through the portal back to her dimension, or so they think.

Locke & Key Season 2

Season two picks up shortly after the events of season two. Really when the kids next year of school starts. And of course, as viewers, we know, that the issue at hand is Dodge. She is still around, but the kids don’t know that. So what is Dodge’s plan going to be now?

The style of the show stays very much the same. It is still a young adult show with horror elements to it. For me, the feel of the show leans more into those horror elements, but not too much. But one of the things that this season does, it dig more into the lore of the Keyhouse and the Locke family. It is shown early on, but really delved into towards the end of season two.

What Doesn’t Work?

I think the one knock people might have from season one still remains. If you read the comic by Joe Hill you know how much darker and twisted that is. While Tyler, Kinsey and Bode are all around the same age, the world and how they interact with it is much less fanciful. They struggle with life more, and the actions of the student are grimmer.

For something on Netflix, I think that the changes work. But while season two is a little bit darker, it is not that dark horror. So if season one is not your jam, then season two is not going to be either. Now if season one grew on you, this might feel a bit more like the comics. And I think as someone who read the comics and likes the show, I see more nods to the comics in this one. There are in season one, but more direct references I feel here.

What Works?

I really think that building on the lore works well in this season. We get to find out not about where the portal goes to, but more of the history of it. More of what Dodge wants as well, which is intriguing. The house and lore are so intriguing that it’s hard not to want to know more about it and see more in the world. The portal to another dimension is that element that just feels different and out there from other shows.

I think they also toned down the teen drama a little bit. Watch the first few episodes, and you will disagree. But the further you get into the series, the more you see that drop away. There is still drama, since they aren’t going fully horror, drama needs to exist in some other ways. But it isn’t as much as times in season one. And a lot of that is that Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode feel like a weight has been lifted with Dodge being gone.

I appreciate, as well, that there is more adult involvement and that some of that involvement, while similar to the comics, is handled better. I think that they create a more interesting story that way. And it feels like the adult involvement makes more sense in this case.

Finally, the acting is still very strong. Bode, as a kid actor, is not always the best, nor the new kid actor in there as well. But Gabe is amazing (Dodge’s current form), and the other two kids, Kinsey and Tyler do a very good job as well. I love it when a show does well with the casting. And their mother, Nina, is very good at being confused.

Who Is It For?

I think it is for fans of Stranger Things. Another Netflix property with a similar feel, but more of a kids on bikes focus. This feels like it’s a tad more cleaned up from that and while it blends fantasy and horror, the feel is not quite the same.

As for fans of the comics, I do think that season two is likely to be appreciated more. But it is young adult in tone versus the comics. So if you dislike season one, season two is unlikely to change that. And I can understand that if expectations starts differently that this might seem very off. But if you go into season one knowing it is young adult, you’ll likely be able to appreciate it more.

Locke & Key Season 2 Final Thoughts

I like this show a lot. For me, I do not mind the young adult feel, nor am I sure that I would love to watch something that sticks perfectly to the comics. This helps balance out some of the trauma that they went through by showing off the wonder of the Keyhouse and what it is to be a Locke. The decisions that Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode face still are heavy, but there are more moments in there.

And I know there is going to be one more season. I think, many people, like myself, didn’t watch season two immediately when it dropped. There is just too much time between the seasons. But, thankfully, Netflix is already committed to a season three and they know it will be the last one. I want to see where the series ends, and while it might not be release day binge, I will watch it.

I have a list of 5 that you could checkout from anime to monster of the week.

Halloween is coming up, and when it’s spooky season that means it’s time to watch spooky shows and movies, play spooky and spoopy board games and generally just enjoy the colorful weirdness of the season. We’ve gotten a lot of good shows for Halloween over the year, stuff from monsters of the week to trippy weirdness. Let’s talk about some of them you might want to checkout before the holiday.

Ghost Hunt

It’s the only anime on the list, but it’s a good one. This one leans into Japanese horror but is also still an anime. That means that it has some lighter moments in it. However, it also does have some really good horror moments in it. Mai finds herself in a school where there is a ghost. She runs into the president of the SPR, Shibuya Psychic Research, and gets a job with him. She then goes on a lot of adventures and mysteries with ghosts and other monsters. That’s the basics of it, but it’s a nice fast anime to watch that I really enjoyed.

Locke & Key

Locke & Key is a great one to checkout because the second season is coming out tomorrow. Locke & Key follows the Locke family as they return to Rendell’s home after his death. His wife and kids go there, and Bode, the youngest starts to hear weird noises. These lead him to finding keys and to finding Dodge. The keys do amazing things, very fanciful and terrifying in nature, but Dodge doesn’t seem to want to use them for quite as simple things as Bod would want.

Locke & Key is on Netflix and based off of a comic book series by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son. The comics are much more violent and adult in nature than the show. The show on Netflix is more YA (young adult) focused, which I think works well. It still has that sense of uneasiness and dread in the show, but makes it more accessible to people. Really fun one to watch and not that long a watch.

Dark

Another Netflix show, this one about time travel and murder. I will say immediately that this is a show that is better watched sub titled than dubbed. The difference is fairly jarring while watching dubbed. And it’s a show that at least the first season, I need to watch the others, is really good. The time travel is well done and the mystery that is happening in the town works so well. The whole premise just feels like something different. And the title definitely matches what it is.

The show itself isn’t too violent or really contain many jump scares, but the mystery that is progressing throughout the story is just unsettling. The time travel works to make it even more unsettling as you go along. Aesthetically this just works really well.

Supernatural

It’s hard to make a list like this without putting Supernatural on it. I have not watched all of the show, it is a lot to get through. But it is a good show for Halloween because it is monster of the week a lot of the time. Sam and Dean are brothers who know about all the things that go bump in the night. It also has that element of angels and demons throughout the whole series as well.

Now, this is a series that you could start watching now and probably continue until Halloween of 2022, so much longer than most. And it is repetitive in what it does. But the first couple of seasons are more horror focused and tell an interesting story. Then after that it will get into more spoopy than spooky at times, but it’s still fun. There is just a ton of it so beware.

Helix

This one might be harder to track down, but this was a SyFy channel show that was basically The Thing, but not. An experiment goes wrong on the south pole and this disease or thing is spreading to people on the base. Is it an accident or is there some more nefarious plan behind it. The fact that I’m asking that question means that there is a more nefarious plot behind it, but how it unfolds is good. And who is infected and how they try and avoid getting infected works really well.

This, I think, had two seasons on SyFy. I can’t vouch for the second season, but the first is worth a watch by itself. This horror is all about the suspense of the unknown and is probably more traditional horror and jump scares than almost anything else on the list.

What Are Your Favorite Shows to Watch at Halloween?

I know there are a lot of horror shows out there that I didn’t mention and some that are more spooky than spoopy. There are shows like Grim which I need to watch again that I really liked. But are there any out there, knowing my tastes, that you think I’d like?

We’re are recording the first episode of Dungeons and Flagons Season 2 on Thursday. A new cast of characters with the same players and GM that you love.

The World of Dungeons and Flagons!

This time the characters will be working through the city of Bresson (spelling might be off). Part of the Lieth Barony and one of the biggest trading points on the continent. What secrets lie in the city 500 years after the events of Season 1. Finja, Torin, and Tate are gone, but Nimrose is still around somewhere, though she hasn’t been seen in over 100 years.

I still haven’t seen the first season, but from my new years resolutions, you know that is one of my planned watching/binging for the new year, along with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Daredevil.
