Marvel was kind enough to drop for us two new trailers. Captain America: Brave New World got a new trailer as did Thunderbolts*. What did we notice about those trailers and we start to talk about what we hope we might get from those movies. And there’s news with Marvel coming out of D23 Brazil and What If Season 3, quotes from Kevin Fiege and more. Plus more Fantastic Four rumors and a Marvel anime?

And the trailers:

It’s between movies and shows for Marvel as we wait for What If…? to come out and we’ve wrapped up on Loki and The Marvels. So what should we talk about on #10MinMarvel? Well, let’s fan cast the X-Men, of course. Greg and I, Peder, both come up with some of the X-Men characters that we’d want to see at the start and who we’d like to see play them. Plus news to talk about including an X-Men character maybe coming back for Deadpool 3.

Marvel Dice Throne X-Men https://nerdologists.com/2023/10/marvel-dice-throne-x-men/ https://nerdologists.com/2023/10/marvel-dice-throne-x-men/#respond Wed, 18 Oct 2023 13:26:00 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=8435 I'm backing Marvel Dice Throne X-Men. What do you need to know about their crowdfunding campaign before you jump in?

The post Marvel Dice Throne X-Men first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
This isn’t going to be like a normal Back or Brick article. There is zero suspense if I am going to be backing Marvel Dice Throne X-Men. The answer is, I am backing it. But let’s talk about this campaign because I think there are a number of things to break down with it and why I picked the level I did, for right now. And why I might be changing my pledge level.

What’s on the Kickstarter?

So let’s start out by talking about what is on the page, which you can see here. There is more on this crowdfunding page than their other Kickstarter campaigns, which I think is worth calling out a few things. Mainly that, before, add-ons, there are three products that you can back. Some of them are just expansions and there is a core box.

Core Box

The Core Box is almost a must buy if you’re going to back the Kickstarter. Though, you can always mix and match any of the Dice Throne content together. But the core box is where you will get most of the new characters. And what they were announcing new characters for mainly.

If you want to play as the X-Men, you now can. You’ll have a choice of Rogue, Gambit, Storm, Iceman, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Psylocke, or Wolverine. And they have a nice range of difficulty on characters that you can play which they nicely call out now. So if you want more of the Dice Throne game, or you want to start playing it because you love the X-Men, this is a great spot to start.

Missions

Now, Dice Throne is traditionally a competitive game. It’s called Battle Yahtzee by some, though there is much more control over the dice than in Yahtzee. But Dice Throne is not only a competitive game. There are two ways that you can play it cooperatively. The first was Dice Throne Adventures which came out a few years ago. And now Missions is going to offer some of that cooperative game play, but I believe in a shorter game than the Dice Throne Adventures Campaign.

This is the big area of the game that I want to look into. What I like while looking at it is that the villains vary a lot. And the Missions don’t seem to just be X-Men focused. Yes, you have Mister Sinister. But you also battle Thanos. Thanos is going to be more of a Marvel Dice Throne versus Marvel Dice Throne X-Men villain. Though, if you go by the comics, some of the X-Men play a big role in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline.

Deadpool

Finally, there is Deadpool. He isn’t really the last thing, there are add-ons as well. But Deadpool as a playable character coming in his own premium box. I say premium because he comes with the miniature and acrylic tokens that you can upgrade for the other characters. Downside is, if you want it all matching, he doesn’t come with a cardboard standee and he doesn’t come with cardboard tokens.

Deadpool is mainly just going to be another character you can mix in to fight with or against. Now he isn’t a Missions villain, though that’d be great, but for the base competitive game, he’ll be able to be played. What always worries me with Deadpool in games is that he often is taken too meta and it’s either too strong or too annoying to play with.

What Level to Back

So, I want to talk about this because I am still waffling on it. The question I’m asking myself isn’t about the core box, I want more characters always. It isn’t about Deadpool, against more characters. And I do have concerns with Deadpool. Is he going to be broken because he’s too meta or too annoying? I don’t know, but I want to give him a try.

Missions is the part that I don’t know about. Why? Because do I want to play it as a cooperative game. I thought that I did with Dice Throne Adventures. But when I got it, I realized, I didn’t want a big campaign. I like Dice Throne as that head to head battling game, or multiplayer battling game. And Dice Throne Adventures, it might have been great, but it was a much longer mode of the game. So I never felt like playing it.

Missions, on the other hand, I need to look into more. If it offers some of that cooperative play with out too much extra work to play the bad guys, then I’m more intrigued. If I can sit down and play a game in an hour, that is reasonable, even an hour and a half. I just don’t want a lot of sessions.

But, I like the acrylic tokens as well. So if I were to drop backing with Missions, it’d be easier to pick those up. Right now, I don’t have acrylic tokens added as an add-on. If I were to get rid of Missions, I’d likely add those on instead, so it isn’t a money saving move.

Marvel Dice Throne X-Men

Like I said, this isn’t a back of brick. If you want to know if you should back it, you likely already know. Either you back it because you know you love Dice Throne, you back it because you love X-Men, or you know you don’t like either enough to back it and won’t. It’s a bit simpler than some because this is a game that has been out for a long time.

Man vs Meeple has coverage on it if you want to see how the characters play. Maybe you like Dice Throne but you don’t know if you need more characters. Then checking out a video or two is going to help let you know. But for me, it’s always fun to have more. And with everything, I think I figured it out, there are 35 different combinations. So I’ll be trying out new ones for a long time.

Which character do you look forward to playing most? For me, it’s Gambit and Rogue.

The post Dreaming Casting – X-Men in the MCU first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Let’s take you back in time to when it was a Friday, last Friday in fact, and I wrote an article about what X-Men I wanted to see show up in the MCU first. I didn’t want to see the normal cast of characters, but instead, I came up with my own team.

When creating that team, I’ll get to who they are again shortly, I wanted to go in a different direction. Instead of having the “boy scout” team, I went with what could be considered a team with more questionable characters. I’ll get into their stories below before I cast them. But having a team that is trouble in space, like the Guardians of the Galaxy, where they are heroes, but they aren’t that reputable is one thing, but then putting a similar team together on Earth, that’s another thing. And them having a rough relationship with the law and a poor view of them will give credence why the rest of the X-Men are in hiding.

Let’s meet the characters:

Gambit – He has the ability to charge objects with energy so that they do more damage. He’s known for throwing around playing cards to do that. But what people don’t know is that he was part of the LeBeau Family Thieve’s Guild after he was kidnapped from a hospital at birth and then raised by them. So he’s got a nice shady background.

Rogue – Growing up on a commune in Mississippi, Rogue had two loving parents until her mother disappeared. Then her “aunt” raised her, but it was very strict. When she was a teen a boy she liked kissed her, and her powers kicked in. Because of that she ran away. Rogue’s powers include stealing super powers from someone, sapping that person’s energy, and erasing memories. After leaving the boy in a coma, she ran away from the commune.

Nightcrawler – Nightcrawler has teleportation powers, but that’s not what you’ll notice about him, it will be his odd look. His tail and slightly demonic look because he is half demon. He’s the happy-go-lucky member of the party. But he’s still shunned from society for how he looks.

Bishop – From the future, Bishop grew up in a mutant camp after humans used Sentinel robots to round up all the mutants. This was after he moved to the United States from Australia when Australia was destroyed in a nuclear attack. He has powers that allow him to absorb energy and redirect back out. He also has super human strength and the ability to know where he is at all times, which is useful being from the future.

Siryn – She, like her father, Banshee, has the power of a super sonic scream. She has more abilities as well, but I think that’s the one that they’d focus on instead of giving her full and large suite of abilities. In common super hero fashion, her mother died while her father was away on a mission and she lived with her uncle. This happened in child birth, so before Banshee knew she was still alive, he hurts her uncle and he vows revenge on Banshee bringing Siryn into a life of crime.

You can kind of see where I’m going with this. I think this is a team of characters who would do the right thing, but wouldn’t always go about doing it the right way. It’s also kind of a duplicate of what we had in my last article, but more details, so sorry for repeating myself, and I am guessing that I have some of the backstory of the characters wrong, but the motivation for them would stay the same.

So let’s get down to casting:

Gambit – Gaspard Ulliel
Who, you might ask, and I think is fair. But this French actor would be able to give Gambit the classic accent. He probably is best known for playing Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Rising. But I think it would make sense to take a lesser known actor and put it in the roll.

Rogue – Aly Michalka
I know her as Peyton from iZombie. And while she plays a very sweet character in that show, you do get to see her tough side. I think that’s one of the things with Rogue, she’s had struggles in life but she’s generally a sweet character.

Nightcralwer – Max Mauff
I don’t know a ton about him as an actor, so I’m borrowing some of these things from other people or using ideas from others and my own, but he has the look to play Nightcrawler, and yes, by that I mean he comes with his own tail. Okay, not that, but from his work and his look, he would fit Nightcrawler well.

Bishop – Ray Fisher
He played Cyborg in the Justice League movie, but don’t hold that against him. I think that with now being cast in True Detective, I’d trust his acting chops a bit more. Fisher is someone who people won’t recognize for playing Cyborg, so that would help him find his good super hero role.

Siryn – Saoirse Ronan
The big name of the crew, and the least known character. I’m not sure if she’d want to join the super hero world, but she’s definitely got Irish background, like Siryn is supposed to as well. I think she’d be a good foil for a film as well where Siryn might be the reason for pulling whatever job it is, and unlike some actors, she’ll be able to pull off a strong character while being a foil for the story as well.

So that is who I would cast, now obviously there are a whole lot more to look at in the long run as well. You’d bring in Professor X, Magneto, Mystique, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Strom, Beast, etc. at some point in time. But I think that you’d want to introduce them in a big way, showing up in some big face off event to help the New Avengers or something like that.

What do you think of my casting, would you want to watch a movie with that cast? What sort of plot would you come up with for that X-Men team?

The post What X-Men Should Come to the MCU? first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Oh boy, I’m taking on a bit of a topic here. Marvel and Disney now own a lot of 21st Century Fox and part of that was getting the X-Men and the Fantastic Four back. I already did a casting article for the Fantastic Four, and it was time to do one for the X-Men. Then I realized, there are a million X-Men, which ones should show up in the MCU and should it just be the main group again? That’s what today we’re going to think about, should we have the original team back or if not, who should we get?

I personally don’t think we need the main group of X-Men again, in particular, I think we need to not see Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, and Wolverine again that quickly, and possibly even Magneto for a villain again that quickly. The main reason is that Hugh Jackman was obviously iconic as Wolverine, so it would be hard to recast him. Plus Jean Grey and Cyclops are two expected names. I think that the MCU would be better served bringing along the X-Men slowly. With that, I think that skipping or not having Charles Xavier as a main character is important as well for keeping it that lesser known feel.

Now, that might be a big of a harder sell, because the X-Men movies have generally be fairly successful and it would be easy to lean into the main characters again. It would likely mean that you are getting a decent amount of money from them, but Kevin Feige has led the charge of taking lesser known characters and making them well known in the public eye. I had been reading comics for a while, but I didn’t really know how the Guardians of the Galaxy were. I knew Ant-Man and Dr. Strange from the Avengers comics, but not as a stand alone, and all of those work well in the MCU. So I trust that lesser known characters would work well, though, I’m thinking, keep the Disco Dazzler sidelined for a while, that might be smart.

So then who do you put together as a team? You would still have Charles Xavier in the background, but you wouldn’t really bring him in, kind of like Thanos, until you needed it for the big event as a good guy. That way you keep it separated from the characters that have been previously used in the X-Men world. But Xavier is an important enough character that you probably need to tease him, at least, early on.

But let’s meet the main roster:

Gambit – I just want Gambit done well, but he was barely in the previous movies, so he would be someone new, and I could see him “leading” a team of X-Men, though probably fairly poorly, which would be an interesting part of a story.

Nightcrawler – So I break my own rule here. He’s had a pretty large part in the previous films, but he’s a character a lot of fans like. I’m also going for misunderstood characters, and I think you play with that with Nightcrawler.

Rogue – You can see the thread, misunderstood characters. Ones who don’t stand out as the heroes as much as the others, because when you get down to it, Rogue’s powers to leach the powers and life from people are terrifying, especially if she’s not careful. She and Gambit have also been a fun flirting couple in the comics.

Bishop – Bishop is an interesting character with his powers to absorb energy, so kind of the opposite of Gambit. But he’s also interesting if they wanted to play around with timelines more since he’s supposed to be from the future and putting him out of place would work pretty well. But if you don’t want to do that part, you can ignore it as well for him. And he’s someone that people aren’t familiar with.

Syrin – She could also be the new Banshee, but I think keeping that character away is fine now. She’d round out the team with sonic powers. I like her because she has a pretty tragic backstory, but more so for her criminal background. So that’s something that would make a lot of sense to have her pair up with Gambit who has some troubles in his backstory and with Nightcrawler who can bamf around.

That’s the team that I’d start with for the X-Men. We’ll come back at a later time and do some casting for those characters. If you were to create an X-Men team without using the likes of Beast, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and Wolverine, who would you go with? And do you like an idea of a more misunderstood team versus the boy scout team you can end up with when Cyclops is around?

Alright, CONvergence week is over. It was a blast, but now time to get to some other heroes (and a day late).

The X-Men

Charles Xavier/Professor X: The most important player in the X-Men world. Charles Xavier, one of the earliest mutants and one of the most powerful, he has had many interesting story lines. Along with his psychic and psionic ability, he is known for trying to help humans and mutants living together peacefully and keeping things from blowing up on him. Mutants generally don’t get a fair shake, and Xavier, originally following the civil rights story line and then going into the issues that Magneto causes and that he has to try and undo the damage that has been done. But he doesn’t give up on mutants but wants to create the safest world for all people.

Wolverine/Logan: Probably the most iconic of all of the X-Men roster. Wolverine, or Logan, is a wild card. He doesn’t follow orders well and he doesn’t get along with people, but he is reliable to come through when he is needed. His story is very tragic. An experimented upon person, he did things that he really didn’t want to do, and for that reason he hasn’t been trusting of authority and while he and Xavier get along for the most part there definitely has been friction, and compared to the other teachers/instructors at Xavier’s School, he has much more latitude to leave for a long time. He crosses over a fair amount between the X-Men and The Avengers roster. He almost literally can’t die, which has been a blessing and a curse of him, and his claws are just cool.

Scott Summers/Cyclops: He’s often considered the leader of the X-men, and in the storylines where Xavier isn’t around, that is generally true. However, he is kind of a push over. As a character, his powers are fairly cool being able to shoot a beam of light from his eyes and not being able to open them without his mask/goggles on. However, he is built up by Wolverine and Jean Grey and the love triangle that happens and then torn down as the most boring part. He is almost too much of a boy scout and has been for a long time. And when he goes to the edgier side of thing, it doesn’t seem to fit with the history of his character as much as one would expect. Much like most heroes, he had a tragic story with his parents dying, but doing so saving himself and his brother, Alex.

Jean Grey/Phoenix: Probably the craziest of the heroes. Jean Grey is possibly more powerful than Xavier with her psionic/psychic ability. However, she has an alter ego that is constantly in struggle. It comes across several times in the comics that this cosmic force comes around and Jean Grey goes into full Phoenix mode. The issue with the Phoenix is that it is a force of destruction. While Jean Grey can at times control the Phoenix powers, she is eventually consumed and has eaten stars at the Phoenix and killed off planets doing so. She often uses Xavier’s help to control the powers, but she is a wild card as to what is going to happen.

Storm: Storm is probably the least used out of the previous X-Men, but her powers to control the weather are quite cool.  Her backstory of being the daughter of an African princess and the separation because of the death of her parents and her inability to truly know and control her powers. Eventually she learns on her own and becomes connected with Xavier. She is probably the most stable teacher at Xavier’s School. The issue is that I don’t have that much more to say about her. She is a reliable character who is always going to be up for helping out in a fight and is one of those characters that wouldn’t make sense not to have there in the background, but having a story only about her would be harder to pull off. And if everyone was in a love triangle, it would become stale pretty quickly.

So here is a start to the roster of X-Men. I will definitely come back to talk on Gambit, Colossus, Kitty Pryde and more who have their own interesting backgrounds and stories. Who else from the X-Men do you like?
