We’re back in the new year, and we are talking What If Season 3. The series has wrapped up, at least for now, on Disney+ with it’s final season. And how is that season, what episodes stand out for us as our favorites? And which ones did we want a bit more from? Plus there are a lot of rumors around casting for Doomsday, Secret Wars, and Spider-Man 4. And rumors about which shows might be coming to Disney+ as new shows or getting a second season.

Random YouTube Round-up https://nerdologists.com/2024/07/random-youtube-round-up/ https://nerdologists.com/2024/07/random-youtube-round-up/#respond Mon, 01 Jul 2024 11:24:38 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=9014 I watch a ton of board game YouTube. But I do watch things beyond that. What are some of my favorite other YouTube channels?

The post Random YouTube Round-up first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
I’ve talked previously about board game YouTube channels that I like a lot. I could go back and do a revised list, a few that I used to watch have stopped or their content has changed. I won’t get into that today, though because I want to talk about some of my favorite channels on things other than board games. So what do I watch on YouTube that covers other things?

Five Other Random YouTube Channels

5. Neil Newbon

This is a new one to me, and I don’t know how much I’ll keep watching after I finish up what is currently their main show. Neil Newbon is the voice for Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), a game that I am enjoying a ton. He and a friend are streaming and playing through Baldur’s Gate 3 as well as interviewing other cast members. So it’s just a fun time and a weird way to watch the stream, also to watch them struggle to stream. They are not streamers, they do stream more than just BG3, and it’s not always the best, but it is fun.

4. The Breakroom

There are a number of channels that I could put here. I’ll do a quick honorable mention to Screen Crush and New Rockstars. The Breakroom is a spin-off channel for New Rockstars. New Rockstars didn’t want to dilute the brand of their channel and wanted to spread a net wider, so The Breakroom, which had been a show on New Rockstars moved over to it’s own channel as well as it’s own Twitch channel. I watch it after the fact on YouTube. They do a few times a week edited videos around some of our favorite nerdy things.

Right now I’m watching it less. They are doing episodes regularly about The Boys and House of Dragons, two shows that I have watched and don’t have a ton of interest in. But when they do their headlines shows, and in particular, when they talk Marvel, I’m into it. And some of the people on The Breakroom are amazing, and some are just good. But it’s always entertaining and a bit more of a chance for them to be silly versus the regular New Rockstars channel.

3. PokeRev

You might have caught me doing a sneaky stream last week. It is down below this. But PokeRev is a Pokemon YouTuber. Not the video games, but the collectible cards. And he does things like box breaks that you can buy into (I haven’t ever and won’t likely ever. But the more common thing that he does is that he’s opening up the new sets, he’s opening up the Japanese sets, or he’s finding various products out there. A lot of them are the mystery boxes and sometimes they are good and sometimes, like the mass produced ones, they are terrible. But it’s fun to watch and he’s a very engaging host.

2. NFLStockExchange

Now what if you’re into football. But not just into football, in particular you are into the NFL Draft. Then the NFL Stock Exchange podcast might be the one for you. Trevor and Connor the hosts are great. Another more light hearted handling of football and just a chance to sit back and be excited. They do a lot of Mock Drafts around the NFL Draft season, they talk college football players throughout the year, and right now they are doing summer scouting. Both of them bring interesting thoughts to it and they’ll disagree.

One of the things, though , that I really like is what when they disagree, it’s never that negative. Their is almost always a positive end to it. The number of times when someone likes a player better than the other the person who likes it less hopes the other person will be right. And it is genuine because they want the college players to succeed in the NFL. So it’s nice to have a very positive football show, not everything is roses, but positive.

1. Viva La Dirt League

Finally, this is one that I’ve been catching up on again, but Viva La Dirt League (VLDL) is amazing. They make a ton of sketch videos but they generally fall into different categories. There is one about a business, retail tech company, that is good. But the main one that I love is Epic NPC Man. They create a video game world for these videos and it’s just over the top and a ton of fun. The NPC wavers on the edge to sometimes fully knowing that they are in a video game. And it pokes fun at a ton of different video game tropes. Highly recommended for sketch comedy.

Final Thoughts

There are more that I could have mentioned as well. To toot my own horn, I have a channel for the Marvel podcast, 10 Minute Marvel. I watch AhnaldT101 for videos around Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes a game that I play daily on my phone. And there is ViniiTube a channel that I’ve stumbled across which I mainly use to find out what anime is coming up. Taskmaster, to watch episodes of the show Taskmaster. And well, I think I could find more, but that’s about where the watching regularly drops off.

What are some of your favorite random YouTube Channels, let me know them in the comments section below.

Did we have our expectations too high for D23? Yes, we did. Is it disappointing when looking at it in that light, maybe. But there were still a lot of awesome things that came out to D23 to talk about. Plus then Episode 4 of She Hulk is out as well. We were in the court less this time, but still a really fun episode. And a great cameo yet again in the show, one we’d seen before, but now with more screen time.

What did I think of it, how does it hold up to the other shows and movies?

The post Revisit, Rewatch, Review: Black Widow (Spoiler Review) first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
You can find out some thoughts on Black Widow already over in the 10 Minute Marvel podcast. Because, of course I was going to talk about it there, but Marvel is back and that warrants writing up a review of the newest movie, Black Widow. I probably should have been doing this for the shows as well, but the podcasts covered that weekly for a long time.

Black Widow Spoilers Ahead

As that says, there are going to be spoilers ahead of this film. If you are interested in seeing, I suggest going to a theater to see it, if you can, or checking it out over on Disney+ with their premiere access. That should give you some idea if I like it, but you can make that determination yourself.

The Plot

The Black Widow, it has a pretty straight forward plot. In the movie, we start immediately after the events of Civil War and the battle at the German airport. Black Widow is on the run and using some of her contacts to find a place to lay low. She finds a spot, but a delivery of mail from her old safe house in Budapest brings unwanted attention from the Taskmaster and the Red Room. This is because Yelena, who was under a drug induced mind control by the Red Room was given a drug that caused her to break free.

Black Widow goes to Budapest where she teams up with Yelena. Natasha finds out that when she was there last time and she thought she took down the red room, she hadn’t. The man she’d been trying to kill, to prove her loyalty to SHIELD, Dreykov had survived. And he was still running the Red Room and the widow program.

Yelena and Natasha go to Siberia to break their “father”, who had played their father when they were undercover in the US, out of prison. Alexei, the Red Guardian, was the Soviet’s answer to Captain America. Their own super soldier. He, unfortunately doesn’t have any connection to the Red Room anymore. But he knows that their mother from their time undercover, Melina, likely does.

They go to her, she does indeed and that gets them into the Red Room. Though, not the way that they had planned, being captured, instead, by the agents of Dreykov. However, it turns out that Natasha and Melina had hatched out a plan. They swapped faces, and Natasha was able to get her revenge and take down the Red Room. Along the way finding out that Taskmaster was Dreykov’s daughter, whom she had used to find Dreykov and thought she’d killed originally in Budapest.

What I Didn’t Like

Black Widow

Now, that was a pretty long winded recap. Normally I sum this up better, especially for something that has a straight forward plot, but I wanted to explain things up there for the plot, versus down in what I did and didn’t like.

The main thing that I didn’t like was the use of Taskmaster. There is little to no reason that Taskmaster needed to be turned into a cyborg, basically, or that they even needed Taskmaster for the plot. Natasha has enough past trauma to go through with taking down the Red Room to get closure that you don’t need a notable villain besides Dreykov. And then Taskmaster ends up getting deprogrammed and set free. But what does that even look like? She isn’t going to behave like a normal person in the real world.

But, honestly, that’s about it that I didn’t like. Now, keep in mind, I am talking about likes and didn’t like, not good, bad and average. Average is going to be everything else.

What I Liked

I thought that Florence Pugh was amazing in this. Her portrayal of Yelena really worked and she was the main reason to watch this movie. And with the end credit scene, is the main reason to have watched this movie. She just worked really well as a jaded figure who was out of the Red Rooms control, but doesn’t know how to live. Yelena is a good counter point to Black Widow. She is fairly jaded with everything, and harbors resentment but now has new freedom.

And then that End Credits scene. Florence Pugh is going to be showing up in the Hawkeye TV show. So it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. Clearly going to be a continuation of that end credit scene. Also, this was supposed to be the first time we met Val. I actually think it works much better that we met Val in Falcon and the Winter Soldier before we met her here. It gives us more context for her and makes this scene play better.

I also like David Harbour as the Red Guardian. He was mainly there for comic relief and to do a bit of fighting. But that worked for the film. It needed someone who could help balance out what would have been a very serious and dark movie. Marvel does a good job of adding characters who help keep their films from diving too dark, which I like. A good superhero movie should have that balance, because the comics have that balance, at least from Marvel and DC.

Finally, I liked the balance that it got. This is the type of spy action film that I want. Now, I know I’m in the minority, but I felt like the previous Marvel attempt, Captain America: Winter Soldier, got caught being half a spy movie and half a superhero movie and not doing either amazingly well. This is more of the spy action movie that I like. Now, I know that people will disagree, but for me, that’s how I feel about it.

Black Widow Final Thoughts

Like I said before the spoilers started, this is a movie that is very much worth checking out. The action is really good throughout. I feel like it has some Bond elements to it. It actually has some direct parallels to Moonraker. A Bond Film that I haven’t seen in a long time, if ever. But now I want to watch it. The action is really good and it balances that level of humor and seriousness really well. I am excited to see more Yelena in the MCU.

This, isn’t a Top 10 Marvel movie for me, but probably Top 15. And I really only have a three or four that I don’t think are good movies. So Top 15 is a really enjoyable movie still. Where does it rank in the Marvel movies for you?

So this was one of those giant Kickstarters that I was really excited for. In fact in yesterdays list, I talked about it as my #2 Kickstarter that I was most pleased that I backed in 2020, and I finally took the time to play the base game yesterday, so let’s talk about the game. This won’t be a full review because I’ve only played it once, two player, with Ant-Man and Wasp.

Game Play

In this game, you are trying to defeat some villain, in our case it was Red Skull. They have their plan, Red Skull is trying to create havoc and get Hydra to take over, and they have placed threats all around the city. As the heroes you are going around, fighting his minions and thugs, doing heroic actions to thwart his plans and rescue bystanders all so you can get to the point where you can punch Red Skull and take him out.

To do this, you are playing cards out on your turn that do one to two actions. These cards either have you moving, punching, a heroic action, or maybe a combination of some of those. There are also cards with wilds on them. Now that doesn’t seem like much, but you also get to use the symbols on the cards of the person before you. So in our game, if Ant-Man did two heroic actions, and the Wasp played a wild, she’d get to do two heroic actions and then an action of her choice.

Every third player turn, the villain goes. The villain actually starts off the game as well, they will move, possibly, around the board and then do several different things. There are bam effects that they do, this might be doing damage, or advancing their threat. If they ever complete their goal, they win, if they don’t have any more scheme cards to draw, they win, if a hero has no cards in their hand or to draw, they win.

Initial Thoughts

This is a very light weight cooperative game, and that’s not really a negative, it’s just a fact. Marvel United is meant to be a game that’s played by families or with people who aren’t as much gamers, but the Marvel theme appeals to them. This is what I was expecting from the base game, and I have to say that I wasn’t disappointed. I already can tell that I’d definitely recommend this game to families with younger children as well, because most of the cards don’t have text on them, and the board even has a limited amount of text that kids will probably learn after a few plays of it.

There is also a good amount in the box. You get 3 villains and 7 heroes in the base box, so you have a lot of different combinations that you can play. We picked Ant-Man and Wasp because they are a team-up group, obviously, and also because their minis are great with Wasp taking off from or alighting upon a die, and Ant-Man getting ready to leap off of a quarter. But all of the minis are great in the game, Red Skull is a little boring, but in all fairness, he isn’t the most dynamic looking character. And in the base box, you have a lot of great heroes, Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, and Black Widow round out the rest of them, so you have a great variety to play from.

I also like that each hero has a normal selection of cards ranging from heroic actions to punches, to maybe a move and a punch, but they also have three unique cards to them. These cards do have a bit of text on them, but are really the cards that give them flavor. Ant-Man, for example had a card that is called Quantum Realm that has no symbols on it, but it allows him to go back through the cards that he’s played and swap that card with any of them. Or he has a card where he shrinks which means that he can’t take damage for a turn, or grows so he can punch one villain really really hard.

As a negative, I think base box only, it has enough game play for a family game, but for hobby gamers, you’ll miss not having at least an expansion for the game. This is meant to really be that retail version that you can pull off of the shelf at Wal-Mart or Target because you see it there, and it won’t be too much to play. The expansions, according to what I’ve heard, are supposed to add in more interesting game play and challenges that might be a bit tougher and more gamer.

Final Thoughts

This is a fun game that for me is going to need more. However, I have more of this game coming. And even without more, I had a fun time playing it, and I think it’ll be a game that’s good for a ton of people. If you have kids who are interested in Marvel movies, cartoons, comics, whatever it might be, this is a great option of a game to get them, I should have said that pre-Christmas. If you know someone who isn’t a gamer who likes Marvel, they might like this game as well. It really should be an evergreen recommendation for a family weight game, and then the expansions, when they come to retail, people can pick and choose if they want more. Overall, though, a good experience playing Marvel United and a game that I want to play again and play with more.

There’s a lot of MCU news that’s come out over the past week. We’ve have the Black Widow trailer, and then there was CCXP (Comic Con Expo) in Brazil where there was Eternals footage, a WandaVision still, and some production photos from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I cover all of that, and a little bit more.

Hopefully this was a fun episode to check out, I felt like there were a lot of interesting things to talk about, and it was fun speculating a little bit on what Kevin Fiege might have meant when he said that Black Widow is going to be setting up something big for Phase 4/Phase 5.

I take a break from talking about the MCU Movies in chronological order, because there’s a lot to talk about with Phase 4.
