Top 5 Games I Want A New Edition Of

5. Sword and Sorcery

When playing through the first box, I liked elements of this game. I thought that the puzzle of what you were doing on the board is interesting. But the more I played, the more repetitive it got. And the more the game was just a move, battle, battle, move. Your actions were almost always set in a predictable way.

Sword and Sorcery is one of those games that could improve in two ways. First, get a more varied scenario. There is always probably going to be an element of beat the bad guys. But make that element more interesting and dynamic in the game system. And make it so I don’t feel like I’m just doing the same thing over and over again.

The other one is the story. While some games feel like they live in a unique world, Sword and Sorcery does not. If the writing were to improve that would help the game a lot. The basis of the game, heroes being reborn to save a new age, that is interesting. But the rest of it just felt generic which is disappointing. It has a cool premise and pays off none of it.

4. Boss Monster

This one is tricky. There is a new campaign that added more to the game so maybe that already exists. But when I watch the videos with that crowdfunding campaign it seems more of the same, for me. Boss Monster is a game that I want to like in theory, but in actual execution is just lacking.

You build up a dungeon that heroes are going to go through and you want to attract them. If you attract them, you want your dungeon to be able to kill them. So it’s building the most efficient dungeon murdering path that you can. The issue is that not that much is going on in the game. Most of what I do isn’t that unique or different. You just put down cards with symbols for heroes and damage.

This one it’s harder to know how I want to improve it. I think that Brotherwise Games is on a better track with Overboss and Dungeon Karts where they are games set in the same setting but completely different. For Boss Monster, though, I want something that feels more creative in what I do. Because, a lot of the time it feels like I’m just locked into one thing.

3. Castle Panic/Xenoshyft

I got no major complaints on this one, really. A second edition would just be fun to have for Castle Panic. The game play is appropriately simple and I like that. But, maybe that is one area that I’d want to see more in it. But Castle Panic is a family game for families with younger kids, so I don’t want to ruin that.

Instead, what I think I want is just a new tower defense game. I want something that uses elements of what Castle Panic does but makes you be even more clever. And thinking about it, it might be that I want a new version of Xenoshyft instead. I love that game so much, and it’s a more complex tower defense game.

But give me somethings that combines the two. Less deck building, but more combos and big card play moments to keep waves of monsters from reaching the base. I think just adding in a little bit to what Castle Panic does would be a fun time. And something that could be supported with more. But the more I think about this, I think of other games that maybe cover it for me as well.

2. Dead of Winter

This one seems like a no brainer. And Plaid Hat has been doing some games with this Crossroads system. Whether or not they have the rights to do another Dead of Winter or that is still with Asmodee, I’m not sure. But I’d love to see a new edition of this game.

Firstly, get rid of the hidden traitor. The traitor can just tank the game too easily at any point. And it makes it tricky to teach the game. It’s no fun when the traitor is the person who knows the game. Or as a player who doesn’t know anything about it, and now you’re trying to be the traitor. Just make the game harder, if you need to, to win a scenario. There are plenty of games that are challenging without a traitor.

Next up streamline the game some and maybe provide some campaign like elements to the game. Or at least make it make sense in a way to chain standalone scenarios. That would be awesome, I think that Dead of Winter actually could be an amazing setting for a legacy game. But to do that, you need story outside of the game generating it’s own. And you need the sessions to be a little bit shorter. For a game with a fragile balance, Dead of Winter takes too long.

But please give me a new version of this game. Or something with a similar feel even if it can’t be zombies. But zombies really do work well, and to have a new game come out with the zombie theme, zombies were hot but they aren’t that hot anymore.

1. Charterstone

I know that this is unlikely to ever give me what I want. But Charterstone is a fun game, just not one that I really loved. Mainly because it’s a legacy game where the legacy elements are just okay. I think with what companies like Open Owl Studios are doing now, Charterstone shouldn’t be a legacy game anymore.

You make Charterstone a campaign game. And the legacy elements of unlocking new things, that can still happen. But now it’s about what you add to your board and is saved between each session. It’s not about a permanent sticker, it can be done with cardboard pieces. And you get a campaign sheet to mark instead of a box. But there isn’t a reason that it couldn’t work that way.

Then clean up a few of the unlocks and surprises which weren’t that surprising or interesting in the twists. They wouldn’t work for a non-legacy version, but they aren’t needed. And add in a bit more story. Honestly, get Open Owl Studios to do the production and Ryan Laukat to add to the story of the game and world and keep the Stonemaier core design, it could be amazing instead of just okay.

Final Thoughts

Each of these games are just on that cusp of being a great game for me. The furthest away from that is Castle Panic which mainly I say because I already like the game a lot. And I don’t want to remove the family nature of what game. So it’s really a new cool tower defense game that I’m looking for there. And that might be a list that I do. Take a mechanism or core idea and talk about what I’d want to see in a game like that.

So what would my five games be?

5 Games in the Zombie Apocalypse

The rules for this are as follows. The zombies have eaten all the other games in the world besides these five. And anyone tries to make a game, the zombies eat that game. And any expansions for that game, yeah, the zombies eat those too. So what five base games would I bring from now into the apocalyptic future of zombies eating board games?

5. Aeon’s End

Now, I don’t know which Aeon’s End, there are a few core boxes I could use. Probably War Eternal because that is the one that I’ve played. Though, if it counts as an expansion to the base game, so be it. Aeon’s End is a great deck building game for solo play, and it can play up to four. Now, at four you do less, so I think it’s mainly solo or two player.

But I wanted to have a deck building game, and Aeon’s End jumped off the shelf at me more than others. Plus the solo play is almost a must for a game. Granted, there will be one on the list that can’t be played solo, because I need variety.

4. So Clover

No solo in this one, but So Clover is a great little party game that can play up to 6, I believe. And you’d be able to play with more, just not everyone writing stuff down. Or you could do it in teams. But this is the party game entry on the list.

So Clover has you writing down words that connect two words that can be really separate. It could be turtle and banana. And then those words are shuffled up and the other players need to try and put them in the right spot. It’s a clever idea and it has a nice challenge to it as you play.

3. Cartographers

Technically this can be played solo, but it’s a bit heavier for a roll and write, though not too heavy. And it is more interactive than a lot of roll and writes. Which might sound odd since you can play it solo. But the base game has good game play value in it. And it can play solo, like I said, but also go infinite. That means that it’ll fit almost any player number.

I really like this one too for scoring. Just the different combinations and how you can focus on things is great. Plus you score two things in each season. Including something coming back around at the very end of the game. For all the roll and writes that I own, this one has teeth for decision making, but it isn’t too heavy either.

2. Gloomhaven

I thought about not putting it on the list. And were Frosthaven out, that’d make the list because I haven’t played it. But it is my favorite game. And I still have a lot of characters to play. Yes, I know the story, but there are elements that I’ve forgotten.

And I think that Gloomhaven works well at different player counts. Solo is two handed which is nice, and it isn’t too much. I’ve played at 3 which works well. Gloomhaven is one that I would pull out and play with one group after another after another. And it’s long enough, plus I have a few other games, that I think I’d be interested in that over and over again.

1. Sagrada

I wish this one came with an expansion. But it doesn’t. The expansion I want would be the 5 to 6 player. But I think Sagrada fills that nice family weight game. One that people will be happy to sit down and play. And, honestly, I could make it 5-6 players just by getting a 2nd copy. Maybe not having everything in there, but having most things.

I really like Sagrada for the dice drafting. And the fact that the dice are rolled means that you have variability. Plus you don’t know what is going to be drawn out. I’ve probably played Sagrada 10-15 times and I enjoy it every time. My hope is that it’s one that since I haven’t played with all the tools and with all the windows, it’d generally stay pretty fresh.

Final Thoughts

This is purely crazy situation time but it’s kind of fun. I definitely have some high on my Top 100 games there. Though, So Clover is new to me, but should give you an idea that it’ll be high. The hardest part is trying to figure out how to cover everything and you really can’t. It’s five games.

My closest euro style game is an abstract in Sagrada or the card mechanics in Gloomhaven, but not really even that. So I wanted to pick games that could be flexible and cover a lot of things. But it is hard to do that. I doubt with five games it’d ever be possible.

Top 5 Board Games I Want More Of

5. Blood Rage

Blood Rage is at the bottom of the list, even though I love the game. Mainly, because I have heard rumors that there is going to be more Blood Rage coming, and that is exciting. Blood Rage is an area control game that is really more about the drafting of cards and action point management versus the area control.

From what I’ve heard, this is going to be a 2nd Edition of Blood Rage. I’d love to see the game come with a bit more variety in it. While I do think that the drafting changes up each time, the number of cards is a bit limited. Maybe make the pool you draft from modular or something like that. Just something to make it a bit more replayable, even though I still generally want to play it. So even unique clan powers to start, something like that.

4. Roll Player Adventures

This is also lower on the list because I need to finish the whole game first. But I want more and I already know that I want more for this big box choose your own adventure style game. I’d love something that maybe even offers a bit more of that in the game. But I don’t want a whole new version of the game.

While I do not know how the story ends, I can imagine that it’d be somewhat easy to add in another campaign. Even if you wanted to add in more items, titles, secrets, bad guys, things like that, it’d be less than sending out a whole big box again. So an expansion with even more story would be great.

3. Dead of Winter

This, I think, might make a lot of gamers lists who have been in the hobby for a little bit. Dead of Winter is a game that really helped me get into the hobby. And I really like the crossroads system and the zombie survival nature of the game. However, no matter the length of scenario or which one you pick, the game is long and what you do isn’t that different.

So I would love to get a second edition of Dead of Winter. Streamline it a little bit, maybe even make it fully cooperative like they did with Forgotten Waters. And keep each game shorter. They’ve done more story driven crossroads systems games now, so it feels like Dead of Winter should be great to go again. But I doubt it will happen, or if it does, don’t know how it will as Plaid Hat left it behind at Asmodee.

2. Paper Dungeons

Probably one that makes a lot of sense if you’ve watched me play on Malts and Meeples. I really enjoy Paper Dungeons, but I just want more. I want a way to play more of a campaign. And I want my changes in the campaign to actually matter. Like, I want to keep some things that I leveled up or built, but the monsters to get harder.

I’ve talked about this one a lot. But the game feels like they took it down to just a little bit too little. Some extra piece of variability, especially for the solo game, would be fun. Or, even, with those personal goals that you go for, make them worth more. Maybe it could use a second edition, as well, but a bigger better campaign and expansion is what I want for Paper Dungeons.

1. The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game

Another one that I really like, but it bounces around a lot for me. I understand why this is not a game that more people like, because it is highly mechanical. So while the theme is there, if you know the books, it makes it harder for a game for casual fans. You can tell that there should be theme there, but it isn’t that obvious.

What I want is another Dresden Files board game. It doesn’t need to use the same system, there is just a need for another game. One that really dives into the theme and world that is the Dresden Files. It doesn’t even need to be about Harry Dresden or the main characters from the Dresden File books. But a game set in that world of magic, crime, and monsters, that’d be awesome.

Final Thoughts

I probably could come up with a few more games as well. But these are the five that really jumped out at me that I wanted more of, or a newer version of. I think for the odd numbered ones, more, at least in their world, would help me get them to the table a lot more. And newer editions for games that might be modern classic, but could use a refresher. Then, there are some games that I just want more of.

The Pledge Levels

Marvel Zombies has three pledge levels. I expect to see a fourth show up probably tomorrow. An all in sort of level, maybe even two or three more show up. They’d likely be, all in game play, all in everything, and maybe an all in game play without Galactus. And I’d kind of be cool with that.

But as it stands, right now there are three pledge levels. You have the Undead Pledge at $130, the Resistance Pledge at $240 and the Galactus Pledge at $410. So none of the levels are all that cheap, plus there are a number of additional add-ons including Sentinels, Fantastic Four, Alternate Sculpts, and plastic tokens.

What Comes With Each Pledge

At the Undead Pledge level, you get the basic Marvel Zombies game where you can play as the zombies. You also get all applicable stretch goals, and good news, all of them are applicable to that level right now. Generally, CMON will add in a couple of stretch goals for specific levels in order to get people to increase their pledges late in the campaign. They haven’t done that yet.

At the Resistance Pledge level, you get basically another base box. This allows you to play more of a normal Zombicide experience as the heroes. It also is the box that focuses more on the X-Men. So adds in some value, but the X-Men Resistance box is supposed to be coming to retail. What that means is that you can get everything there, possibly cheaper, if you want, at least cheaper shipping wise.

Finally at the Galactus Pledge you get a 25″ or so tall Galactus, a big guy anyways. And that’s the big addition to that pledge level. It’s also the only way that you can get Silver Surfer. Galactus is a playable piece, though, basically an entity that is going to eat up the board and spaces as he goes along.

The Marvel Zombies Add-Ons

So, like i said there are a number of add-ons as well that we should talk about. Because a lot of favorite characters or interesting characters are available in the add-ons, which of course is going to increase your price.

Extra Dice – $10

This just makes it easier on you as a player or group of players. If you think you are going to play it solo, I don’t think that you need extra dice. But if you’re planning on play with four or six players, you may want more dice. I don’t believe that one set of dice per person is needed, but one for each side of the table, that’d be good.

Plastic Tokens – $30

This just comes down to taste and how much you think you’ll be playing it. Extra tokens and plastic tokens are nice. It means that you don’t have to worry about the tokens wearing out. And some tokens that are more common, having more of them, for each end of the table isn’t bad. But for me, this is a luxury add-on that I don’t care that much about.

Artist’s Special Editions – $25

Now we have some special sculpts for some of the characters. These are just different sculpts that you can play with for different heroes. Like an Old Man Logan sculpt. Those things are cool, but they don’t add new characters, it’s just different sculpts of existing characters. For me, if I was a painter and I wanted some really cool things to paint, I’d consider it, but I’m not so it’s a pass for me.

Sentinel Strike – $40

Now we get into game play ones. If you want to get the Sentinels from the X-Men comics, this is where you can do that. But more so, if you want to play as Charles Xavier in human or zombie form, this is where you need to get him.

Guardians of the Galaxy Set – $40

Then the Guardians of the Galaxy, and if you were to get any of the add-ons, I think this is best bang for your buck. It comes with a lot of fan favorite characters with the Guardians. It comes with Skrulls, those will matter more in the future of the MCU. And it’s heavier on the heroes than some of the other ones. Plus it’s at the $40 price point.

Hydra Resurrection – $50

Now, if you want to get a whole lot more, Hydra Resurrection is good as well. It comes Hydra troops that you can spawn. Now, this one does have more than the Guardians of the Galaxy set, but less kind of favorite heroes, I think, in some ways. And some of the minis you’re going to get are going to be those Hydra troops.

Fantastic 4: Under Siege – $50

Finally, the Fantastic Four, and I’m not sure if we’ll get any more add-ons. This seems like about the right amount, but if there is, it’ll be at 1 PM today. But this is going to add in even more heroes to play around with, the Fantastic Four, and some interesting bystanders with Agatha Harkness, more comic accurate. Again, like Skrulls, Fantastic Four are going to be more important coming up here in the MCU.

Where is the Value?

So, if you add up everything, $410 + another $245 in add-ons. And if there is another add-on it’ll be happening today. But before shipping you’re looking at $655 and shipping in two waves is going to be $100 in the US, more elsewhere.

Marvel Zombies is an extremely steep Kickstarter, but, there are some options to make it cheaper on yourself. Firstly, just getting the Undead Pledge is going to be a whole lot cheaper. $140 and the expansions isn’t that bad. Assuming X-Men Resurgence comes to retail, which they say it will, then the value is better. That shipping is much cheaper. Plus, you can add-on the different expansions and get stuff that way. It’d still be about a $450 all in pledge.

What’s My Marvel Zombies Pledge

Let’s face it, for a lot of us, we want the game because it is Marvel. And that’s why I’m willing to shell out some money for it. But the question is, how much?

For myself, I am not going to be getting the plastic pieces, extra dice, or alternate sculpts. That saves about $65 overall on the price. I expect I’m going to want to play it a bunch, but not enough that I’m going to be too concerned about the tokens wearing out. I have other games by CMON and it hasn’t been an issue.

Plus, right now I am not in for the giant Galactus. I might end up backing that later, but I am not sure on it. The whole price is still pretty high, $180 for add-ons and $240 for the two boxes, that’s $420 right now and $65 on shipping. So $500 for what I’m likely to get. Or near that and that’s going to be a lot of stuff. I think it’ll be about 200 minis, plus the game play.

Would You Back Marvel Zombies?

Now, there are plenty of reasons not to back. Not even looking at price there are a lot of reasons. You might not like Marvel, this makes little sense for you. There are other Zombicide versions out there for you. You don’t like Zombies, well, Marvel United which has been to Kickstarter already from CMON might be for you.

But everything I’ve researched on game play says that this is a very good game. And the minis, if you are a painter, are going to be amazing. So is it the right game for you to back? Let me know in the comments?

So, did you figure it out?

This all started with Quackalope, The Dice Tower, Man vs Meeple and more getting a package from CMON in the mail to open. You can read my initial thoughts and guesses here. And I dismissed what it actually was, but let’s stop beating around the bush, what is it?

Marvel Zombicide

Here’s the Quackalope reveal for it, and honestly I’m as giddy as Alex from BoardGameCo is on that video. I love Marvel, I know that might be a surprise, so I wanted to see what it is. The advantage of it being Zombicide is that while they sometimes do have campaign game play, most of the time it’s just scenario based. That means it will theoretically be easier to get to the table. But Zombicide is a game that has a fair amount of set-up to it, which makes it a bit harder.

But I teased that I was a bit bummed about the announcement and I said that I was giddy as well. So, I backed Zombicide: Undead or Alive. I’d avoided backing any Zombicide for a long time because while the game interested me, it’s a zombie game, and there are a lot out there. I don’t have that many, but zombies aren’t a theme that I need a ton of. But zombies in the wild west, that’s cool to me, so I backed it. However, Marvel Zombicide, I’m way more interested in that. I mean, this even coincides with them announcing a Marvel Zombies TV series on Disney+.

But now I’m going to have two Zombicides, do I really need two different versions of Zombicide. The answer, absolutely not. Thankfully CMON games tend to hold value pretty well, but also, there are going to be a lot of people getting this game and getting rid of other versions. So, maybe I will keep both for a bit, I’ll at least played and learn Undead or Alive while waiting for this one.

What To Expect From This Kickstarter?

Well, firstly, that giant Zombie Galactus, that’ll be something that you can add-on in the Kickstarter. Will I do that, probably not, though I’ll really want to. Why will I want to, because, man, it just look cool. But you can expect a ton of minis, you can expect the all in to be around $225-300. When I backed Zombicide Undead or Alive that was probably $200. And Marvel United X-Men, because I added the playmat was $300. So I expect this to be closer to $300.

You can also expect a ton of minis. If this does well enough that might be a literal ton of minis. But one thing I do love is that they announced this with the Fantastic Four, at least kind of. It was the Silver Surfer and Galactus. I hope that means that some of the first heroes for the game are the Fantastic Four. In Marvel United X-Men, we got them as an add-on which of course I got, but there hasn’t been anything that is focused on them. So I hope this starts with a focus that way.

I am also guessing we’ll see “team” packs as add-ons. So a Young Avengers team, X-Force, Avengers, X-Men, and more. I mainly want to be able to play as Gambit, but we already knew that from Marvel United X-Men. I am really curious to see who the bad guys will be. Are we going to have some heroes as zombies? Are we going to have some bad guys as playable heroes? There are a ton of questions, that I’m guessing we’ll start to get answers on soon.

When Is This Happening?

That’s a good question. They are teasing a date of 11/22, but it’s also being teased as that not being when the Kickstarter launches. So I think that’ll be the date that we find out when the launch is happening. If they are smart it’ll be soon because they are building the hype right now. And let’s face it, CMON is a company who knows how to run a Kickstarter, so it’ll be happening soon. And I will let you know when I know more.
