Destination D23 was a dud. So we’re pivoting, almost on the fly, for characters who have been in Marvel films who were under utilized. Some might have bene killed off, others maybe will get more of a chance to shine, but who is lacking in how they were utilized? Plus a little bit of news and rumors and emphasis on a little bit. Though we do talk about the little bit there was shown at Destination D23.

With the Oscars happening just over a week ago, we thought it would be fun to look back at the Marvel Cinematic Universe and see which movies, Disney+ shows, characters, and moments would make up our own awards. So we both created a list for the following categories:

  • Leading Man and Lady
  • Supporting Man and Lady
  • Best Sidekick (no powers)
  • Villian or Hero Entrance
  • Love Story
  • Fight Scene
  • Best and Worst Script
  • Display of Powers
  • One Liner
  • Villainous Plot

Plus we have some news and rumors. In particular some rumors theorizing what might happen at SDCC and Hall H when Marvel has their panel.

TableTopTakes: Marvel Dice Throne https://nerdologists.com/2022/07/tabletoptakes-marvel-dice-throne/ https://nerdologists.com/2022/07/tabletoptakes-marvel-dice-throne/#respond Wed, 06 Jul 2022 13:40:40 +0000 https://nerdologists.com/?p=7146 A new version of Dice Throne. Does Marvel Dice Throne hold up to the level that I find for the base game? Or is it a miss by Roxley Games?

The post TableTopTakes: Marvel Dice Throne first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
It’s been here for just over a week now and I’ve already played Marvel Dice Throne six times. That should probably answer your question if I like it or not. So instead of doing my normal dive into it, I will do a light one. I’m going to focus more on if you should be searching for this when it comes out in retail.

How to Play Marvel Dice Throne

Marvel Dice Throne is the same game as Dice Throne. So a head to head or king of the hill style battling game. In it you pit your hero against other heroes (or anti-hero with Loki) to see who will come out on top.

You do this primarily through a dice mechanic that is based off a Yahtzee. You roll dice and then re-roll up to two more times. Using the faces of the dice, either numbers or symbols, you then activate an ability to attack your opponent. Your opponent rolls a defense blocking some damage, dealing damage back, or getting tokens to activate other powers and abilities. First player to knock their opponent to zero health is the winner.

That might sound very simple and it is quite simple. But there is more going on than just rolling dice. You get combat points, your currency for the game, and cards. These cards can be a lot of different things. They can remove negative effects from you. They can upgrade abilities or give you new dice combinations to activate attacks off of. Or it can block attacks or manipulate dice. So if you plan it out well, you can possibly set-up a great turn.

What Doesn’t Work?

I don’t really have any issues with the game. I’m bummed that there are no plans for the Geek Bit upgrades, but also it’s a Marvel based game, so that would have to go through them. And I doubt that it’s worth it to do that or it might not even be possible. Otherwise I got no complaints.

I can see people complaining that it is lucky. Which it is to some level. You are rolling dice, but you end up with options to mitigate. You play cards to affect the dice, so that is the most direct way. But all the characters also can upgrade abilities. This means often that you add in new combinations you can roll. So there are ways around the dice.

What Works

Marvel Dice Throne is very good at bringing out the flavor of the characters. With Thor you manipulate Mjolnir for damage and abilities. For Loki you play out illusions. Scarlet Witch manipulates the opponents dice. And Doctor Strange launches spells. Each character is thematic in some way. I love that about Dice Throne in general how every character is different. Marvel Dice Throne keeps that going strong.

Who Is It For?

This is a game for people who like dice. They don’t hide the fact that dice are important when you name your game Marvel Dice Throne. But more than that, Marvel Dice Throne is going to be a game for people who like Marvel as well. It is a pretty casual game and that should make it more accessible to most gamers or even people who are just interested because of the theme.

Should You Get It?

This is a slightly different question than the last one. Mainly because I do think that Dice Throne is not a game for everyone. Let’s face it, even though I might rate a game or game system a 10, someone else might not like it so much.

If you think that Dice Throne, with the fantasy characters, is just fine. Marvel Dice Throne might not be for you. If you love Marvel though and you think Dice Throne is just fine, this one might be better for you. It still won’t make it a great game. Marvel Dice Throne is just another version of Dice Throne. But if you love Marvel that might move it up a bit for you and make it worth your while.

Marvel Dice Throne Final Thoughts

I love Dice Throne and I love Marvel. So Marvel Dice Throne was a no brainer for me to back. And I’ve played it six times already, like I said. I haven’t played all the characters yet, so I’m still ready to dive in more. Thus far I think that Scarlet Witch is my favorite. Doctor Strange is up there and I enjoy Black Widow a lot as well.

Thor, for me, feels a bit more standard in how he plays but I think throwing and retrieving Mjolnir could be a lot of fun if I figure out his character a bit more. And Miles Morales Spider-Man as well as Captain Marvel were cool as well. Captain Marvel is maybe my least favorite, but she can punch really hard at times.

My Grade: A+
Gamer Grade: C
Casual Grade: A

I don't think too many will surprise people.

The post Top 5 – Movies 2021 Edition first appeared on Nerdologists.]]>
Every year I look back on what has come out, and I try and make a Top 5 list of my favorites that I’ve checked out. Well, this might be a bit tricky this year with movies. Though, my rule is that I just need to have watched that movie, read that book, or played a game for the first time that year. So, I should be able to come up with some movies to talk about.

5. Bill And Ted Face The Music

I’m not going to lie, movie watching was done this year. If I didn’t have a lot of December year end and year beginning articles to write, I might not even have Bill and Ted Face the Music on the list. I fully expect that Spider-Man No Way Home will push this off the list. But I haven’t seen that yet.

Bill and Ted Face the Music is a fun film, it’s a good end to the Bill and Ted “trilogy” that didn’t need to be a trilogy. It follows their kids as they try and find the music again before the world ends. Because Bill and Ted haven’t written the song that is going to save the world as the first movie predicted.

In my review, and I still stand by this, I’d watch the original two over and over, but Bill and Ted Face the Music just is fine. You can see some brief thoughts on it here. The movie just seems to lose some of the heart that the other ones have, which makes sense because it’s a long time later. But the year has slim movie pickings for me.

4. Dune

Another one I’m not sure would make the list in a normal year. Granted, I think it would because it’s such a gorgeous movie. Dune is a movie a Dune fans in the best way possible. It’s also a movie for Dune fans in the worst way possible. It tells the story and stays true to the first book too a fault. I like the book, but the first part is extremely dry and it’s not even on Arrakis yet.

But they get the look right, the casting is solid, and the music is great. Once the action kicks in, the last 30 minutes of the movie, it’s really fun. I want to see the second part because even more happens there. But I’m not going to be jumping for joy for the first part. I think if I watch both together, it’ll be very long, but I’ll appreciate it a lot.

3. Black Widow

I won’t lie, it’s Marvel from here on out. Marvel is a soft spot for me, but they did a good job on all their movies this year. I don’t think they messed up any of them. Black Widow is the lowest just because it was a nice Black Widow story, but after Endgame, I don’t need more Black Widow story. And while it sets up some characters, I don’t think it sets up enough, but I do like Yelena a lot.

This is my favorite Marvel spy movie, it’s more Bond like and more my style as compared to something like Captain America: Winter Soldier. Some of that is that it has more humor in it. Some is that Winter Soldier tries to be Bourne, which I thought was just okay and isn’t my style and Black Widow tries to be classic Bond which I like more.

2. The Eternals

The Eternals might not make some people’s lists, but I really enjoyed it. You can hear my thoughts on it on the 10 Minute Marvel Podcast here. But this is a different type of Marvel film. It is building a new team. And it builds a team in a very different way. It also creates a much larger world/universe to be dealt with within the MCU.

I think that the story plays out well. While I kind of get why it can feel rushed, I think the character motivations all make sense. And when they divide as to who they stand with, it makes sense. The acting was very solid as well in this movie. Gemma Chan and Lia McHugh really steal the show, but so many of the roles are well done.

1. Shang Chi And the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang Chi

My Top Marvel film and top movie I saw in 2021 is Shang-Chi. Disclaimer, this is before seeing Spider-Man: No Way Home, and I don’t know what to expect from that. But Shang Chi blended so much together really well. It felt most like a Marvel film for the new character introduced. And the humor in the movie is a lot of fun. I think the humor is better than the Eternals.

Plus, the action in the film is so nice. Clearly taking inspiration from the style of other movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it is some of the best action I’ve seen. There is such artistry in how it is done and there are also some nods to anime in the fighting style at times as well.

That’s my list for 2021. The only other movie I could even consider, that I remember is the Addams Family animated film, my wife and I rented and watched the first one of those. It is a perfectly fine movie. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, but I’d also not tell people to skip it. It’s just a fun, pretty straightforward, movie without many twists are great jokes.

What are the best movies you saw for the first time this year?

It’s been a slow week for Marvel news with the most interesting things coming out of Empire magazine covers for Spider-Man No Way Home. For the main topic, we look at Marvel Dice Throne, a board game on Kickstarter from Roxley games. You can find more information on it here.

We are getting Marvel Dice Throne, what heroes do you want to see?

So, you can hear about this two places, the first being the 10 Minute Marvel Podcast, and then of course here. I could have just left it in the podcast, but I love Dice Throne so much that I knew I had to write about it. And there have been a long series of clues coming out, 17 in total, that have led up to this moment of announcing Marvel Dice Throne.

What Is Dice Throne?

So before we get into what Marvel Dice Throne is, it’s probably worth knowing what Dice Throne is. Dice Throne is a competitive board game where players take characters into battle. Each character plays and fights differently than the other ones, though the basic mechanics of the game stay the same.

Turns are pretty easy to follow in the game. First off you have a chance to play cards, then you roll dice, Yahtzee style up to 3 times keeping dice along the way. The rolling of the dice is how you attack your opponent and they can roll defense, maybe. The cards are used for a number of things, manipulating the dice, but also improving your attacks and defense.

You can read more about it here. And my Top 10 favorite characters here.

What Is Marvel Dice Throne?

So Roxley is taking their Dice Throne system and taking it to Marvel. We are going to get Marvel characters fighting other Marvel heroes in this game. Right now we know that we’re getting Captain Marvel and Black Panther as one of the duel boxes. And that’s what we’re going to be talking about, what characters do I hope that we’ll get in Marvel Dice Throne?

What Heroes Do I Want?

Let’s start with putting out some ground rules. The first is that I think right now we’ll only be getting heroes. We might get, eventually, a Dice Throne Adventures style game with Villains. I’ll talk about that game soon, but for now let’s just say we’re going to do heroes in this first round.

Who we know thus far are Black Panther and Captain Marvel. What other characters do I think/hope will be in there?

Duel Box 1: Black Panther and Captain Marvel

We know it’s coming. I think Black Panther should have a lot of upgrades, probably more upgrades than some other characters, except for one that I expect to see and will talk about later. But his upgrades should make a bigger jump than most as well.

Captain Marvel, I think flight should play into it. She should be able to get a flight token which should boost her defense. It could be something like evasion where she has a chance to avoid some damage or all damage if the roll is right on her defense. Beyond that, I think it should be a big blast attacks with a bit more all or nothing to what she does.

Duel Box 2: Spider-Man and Hulk/Bruce Banner

Spider-Man seems like an obvious choice, and extremely popular character. What I think would work well for Spider-Man is the idea of slowing down other characters. He has the webbing so he should be able to sling that around and reduce how much a character can attack and play defense.

I paired him with an interesting character idea I saw online. The Hulk should be like the Cursed Pirate, in some ways, the Cursed Pirate starts on one side and then flips to the other which does more damage. You can do the same with Hulk. But you can flip back and forth depending on triggers. Do over 5 damage as Banner flip to the Hulk, less than 5 as the Hulk, you’re Banner again.

Duel Box 3: Iron Man and Black Widow

This is the dead box, I mean, is that too soon? But two popular characters. I’ve heard that it might lean more into what is coming up, but I think there’ll be a box of characters who we might not see again.

Iron Man is obviously very popular with the movies, and he’s going to be a character who can have a lot of upgrades. I think there might be some fun stuff you can do with him. Again it’ll be about upgrades for him, the one who might have more than Black Panther would. Or maybe even different suits of armor that allow for freer upgrading, like you start with some basic stuff, but you can upgrade anything over anything.

Black Widow is going to be one where it’s less upgrades. She’d still have moves that she can upgrade, but she’s a character in the movies and comics who can take advantage of a situation. So stronger or more interesting dice manipulation. Or maybe it is more attack modifiers. Either way, she can adapt better to a situation than most.

Duel Box 4: Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch

We’ll call this one the magic box. Obviously both going up against each other in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Doctor Strange could be about time manipulation. Forcing opponents to reroll dice more. Or even putting out tokens that he can use to make them reroll their whole offensive phase, though that’d be hard to get.

Scarlet Witch would pack a wallop and also be able to alter the reality of the game. I don’t know how to balance it, but maybe have her ultimate do less damage and have it remove an upgrade. Or give it two different paths on what you can do. Something that is just game breaking, but not because it’ll slow down how fast she can hit you. It’d be an interesting choice to have to make.

Do I Really Expect These Heroes?

I think that some are more likely than others. I think that Doctor Strange and Spider-Man are the two most likely out of all of them. But there are a ton of characters out there. I’m guessing they won’t dip into X-Men yet. And I fully expect that there will be additional “seasons” of both this and regular Dice Throne to come out over the years. So like CMON did with Marvel United, a second season could be the X-Men.

What Heroes Do You Want To See?

It’s really going to be what we speculate on until October 25th. There are a ton of options, and right now I’m just guessing that the X-Men might come later. And of course the Fantastic Four are an option as well. That’d be two boxes right there if you wanted to get them all.

Though, with the Fantastic Four, my dream would be to get all of them in a Dice Throne Adventures style box, it makes it cooperative against a villain. For me, I would love to see Fantastic Four as heroes that come with that Kickstarter, when/if that happens. And then Doctor Doom as the main bad guy creating a Battleworld type situation. And do some interesting villains as the henchmen beneath him. I’d be a good way to have the Fantastic Four come out at once.

Let me know your top pick in the comments below for a character.
