The Page

Go on Board is a relatively new company into the KS world. They have had two successful campaigns before, but let’s face it, nothing is going to be like The Witcher IP (Intellectual Property) for them. Nor are many Kickstarters like this one where 40,000 people had signed up to get notified at launch. That is an insanely huge number.

One knock or con that I didn’t talk about but could have is the lack of female Witchers. I think that is something that the gaming community would appreciate because the IP and theme of the game is definitely widely popular enough. Some of the reason I didn’t mention that is because there can be several factors going on with this. Firstly, the holder of the IP might not be approving a female Witcher, so I don’t want to put that on the company. And secondly, they are adding in the magic users which a lot of them in the show were female, so will be adding in that diversity.

That last bit wasn’t so much related to the page as to the whole process of making a game. The last thing I’ll add about the page is that while there is a decent sized section on game play. The detail in that section is a little bit light. And there isn’t even a rule book linked in there. I would love to see a little bit more detail. There is game play and I prefer those, but more information on the page is good.

The Game

The game itself seems pretty interesting to me. I have been keeping track of this one from early on with my Let There Be Hype. The game actually reminds me a fair amount of Zona: Secrets of Chernobyl. Maybe not in how the game plays, that didn’t have deck building, but in some of how it works. You can going around fighting monsters, trying to get certain things, and be the first one to a point. Now that’s most games, but both of them pull in story elements that you don’t get done that well in a lot of competitive game and in Zona it is done well and this looks like it will be done well.

My two concerns do still exist, though somewhat alleviated with the PvP (player versus player) combat and the monster combat. The card combat is definitely cool, I like that it isn’t dice chucking. But I worry about ganging up someone who isn’t good at combat and if that’d happen. I don’t know that it would and with the Witcher theme, you should be good at combat. With the monster combat,

I am worried that two players it might not be as good. The players play the monsters and pick one of two options for the monster to do. That doesn’t sound too bad, but if something does 3 damage and another does 1, I am probably picking three damage. In more players, and their 3 player playthrough, embedded below, that was more random. The benefit is that with two options it can add more variety in fewer cards, the downside is that some choices might not be hard.

But going back to the rest of it, I like how the stats work, I like that you progress as a Witcher over time. I really like the story elements to the game, I want a game with an adventure theme like this to have story. And with The Witcher as the theme, there is a ton of lore for them to pull from.

Back or Brick

So is this a back or a brick for me? This is a Back. However, I am not backing it at the minis level. I don’t think that the minis add much to the game besides looking cool. The tokens on the board for monsters, that might actually be easier to work with. It also saves a chunk of money on it. If I were more of an avid painter, I would be more interested in them because they are cool looking. But the game play looks interesting and the theme is definitely interesting.

How about for you, is this game a Back or a Brick?
