A new game last night and a bigger roll and write, but a question of does it deserve to be so big as I play through Dice Kingdoms of Valeria. Valeria has a ton of games in it that are related kind of by a theme, mainly by art and the name Valeria. Card Kingdoms of Valeria is a fun game, does Dice Kingdoms of Valeria live up to that name?

Game Play – Dice Kingdoms of Valeria

The game for having a fair number of rules is quite simple. In fact, I think with some good editing, they could have shortened and cleaned up the rules into a really easy to learn ruleset. Instead, it’s a bit convoluted as you learn the game but when you get down to playing it, it isn’t too bad.

This is a roll and write game with two sheets. But each sheet only has a couple of different things that you do on it. The one has more than the other with citizens, the guilds, gold, the wall, and some fights you can have. The other one is just building out roads and has more monster lairs that you can fight. And most of those are either trigger off of bonuses or done by using a particular colored die.

Solo doesn’t add in too much to the game. There are special rules, now if you roll doubles, a set number of turns, and you collect resources twice. The rolling the doubles is the only part that really is outside of the normal game play. And I think that it works okay, I get what it is for. But the writing on it, in an attempt to bring in theme to a game that doesn’t need it, is not good. It tries to be funny and clever and topical, and my opinion is that basically always fails and dates a game that just came out.

And then on Monday, you can see that my Monday plays are all over the place, trying out new and different games. Often times it is a roll and write because they are shorter and easier to play. Though some of them, like Dice Kingdoms of Valeria, do offer a longer play time. So it’ll be another random game, or maybe an unboxing coming up next Monday. Monday streams are at 8:30 PM Central Time.

Which Game to Play?

Let me know which one you think I should get to the table. I think that I am probably the most excited to play ISS Vanguard. But ISS Vanguard is one that I might want to play with a bigger group. So that would put it lower to the list.

SHEOL is probably the most different theme, in my opinion. The rest feel like themes you see in more board games. Maybe Middara is different, but it is more of a dungeon crawl with a lot of familiar things, just a less familiar setting.

And of course, this doesn’t include more Pathfinder Adventure Card Game or Arkham Horror The Card Game. And I can see games like Shadowrun Crossfire, Solomon Kane, Folklore: The Affliction and more that would certainly be options to play as well.
