Gen Con is Started – What Events Do I Have?
So we are into Gen Con at this point. But let’s quickly recap some of what you can expect to hear me talking about as I come back. Gen Con is going to be a great time again, I suspect. And I am set to play a bunch of different awesome games and other events. So let’s run through those one last time.
My Gen Con Events
Star Wars Unlimited – Twin Suns
This is my kickoff event. It’s going to be the one that overlaps with when the hall opens and the rush happens. I don’t care so much about that, so I thought it’d be fun to do a Twin Suns event. I’ve only played Twin Suns once, but I like the deck that I came up with for it. I don’t expect to do well, but this is pretty casual event from the looks of it. So I hope I get put with other people who see it the same way.
Fantasy Flight Games In Flight Report
This one got added at the last minute. Both in terms of when Fantasy Flight Games added it and when I added it. I am excited for this one, but I also need to grab tickets from Will Call for it, and it’s first day. There is a chance that I won’t get to the tickets in time and I’ll just wander the dealer hall instead. But this is Fantasy Flight’s big announcements for the next year or so. And some of it might be even a new Gen Con release. They have done that before, but we’ll see. For news, I think it would be great to be there. But it’d cut into gaming time.
Metrorunner
Then I am going to play Metrorunner from Thunderworks Games. I love Thunderworks Games, but I don’t back everything that they do. Metrorunner is one that I didn’t back. But I like that I can try it at Gen Con to see what it is about and if it’s a game for me. I like the cyberpunk setting a lot.
Dice Tower Awards
Then, that first evening, which I think my Thursday is too busy now, is The Dice Tower Awards. This is after the hall has closed so I don’t mind doing this one. But this is going to be their awards for the best games of last year in various categories. I thought it was fun last year. And for something to wrap up that first day, I think it is even better. Nice chance for me to get off my feet, extend the day a little bit, and then laugh some and get excited for some games.
Stardriven: Gateway
Now on Friday it’s time to look at a game that I am intrigued about from Rock Manor Games. This one isn’t available for purchase, but it’ll be coming up on crowdfunding soon. I like it when I can see games coming up on crowdfunding. And Rock Manor Games makes a lot of games that to me look interesting. And what I’ve played of their games I’ve enjoyed. This one looks different and fun as well, so I want to give it a try.
Too Many Bones
Next up, still on Friday, is Too Many Bones. This isn’t a new game from Chip Theory Games, but I want to spend some time to really learn the game. Much like I did last year with Burncycle which made me like the game a lot, I want to do that with Too Many Bones. Plus someone else has set-up the game and knows how to run it, which is a good way to learn Chip Theory Games.
Rebel Princess
Saturday kicks off with Rebel Princess. This is going to be a shorter game, but I think we might get in multiple plays? I’m not completely sure as I have yet to play this game. But it is a trick taking game, which I like, but with special powers. You play as a princess who doesn’t want to just be the normal princess. And the one who can avoid that the best is the winner. At least that is the feel I get from just reading about the game.
Star Wars Unlimited – Learn to Play
Wrapping up Gen Con on Sunday I have another Star Wars Unlimited event. This is a learn to play, I already know how to play. I might skip it to play more games otherwise, but it’s before the hall opens, so it’s more a matter of getting packed up and there. If I do, I’ll play it and I know I’ll have fun.
Mistborn Deck Building Game
Final one on the list, and this isn’t on Sunday. But I don’t remember the time for it, I think Saturday afternoon, is the Mistborn Deck Building Game. I don’t have a ticket for it, but my friend has an extra ticket for it which I’ll use. So I’m very excited for this one and to see how it works. As I’ve talked about it in my games to demo, I love Brandon Sanderson and Deck Building, so I want to know how this one works.
Final Thoughts
I feel like I have too many things to do. I love to play games at Gen Con, but I feel like I have too many events to do. Even though most of my events, minus two, are playing games. But I know that I’ll find that I have a ton of time for playing games and having fun at Gen Con this year.
And this doesn’t include other events. I hope to swing by the Open Owl Studios event on Saturday. But I know for sure I’ll do the Man vs Meeple event that evening as well. So, yes, there is a lot to do, even after hours. And Gen Con is going to be great for just playing games again.
