New Games To the Collection

I really should do games leaving the collection as well because I gave some to my kid’s school. But I’ll be honest, I don’t remember all the games that I sent with them. So, instead, let’s talk about the new ones that are coming into my collection. And why I picked them up. Some of them for good reasons, and some of them because they were cheap.

New Games to the Collection

Turing Machine

Out of all the games added Turing Machine is the one that I knew for sure I watched to get. Turing Machine is a deduction game where you are trying to figure out a three digit code. There is only one right solution, of course, and you need to figure that out. But you are asking a machine questions as you create a number.

It might be, is the yellow number, which I have as 4, greater than 3. If that is true, it’ll show a green check. If it is not a red x. There are other things, like is the total of the numbers odd or even. Are there repeating numbers. Things like that for each one and you want to figure out the puzzle faster than other players by using the fewest clues possible. It’s a great thinky game and I love thinky games.

Northgard: Uncharted Lands

Northguard is on the list because it was so cheap. I am interested in the game. It seems like it could be a fun, bigger game of adventure without being a campaign. But it’s also a 4X games, and that is an area that I want to play more games in, but also one that I haven’t played many in. The game was really cheap, though, for how big the game is and that made it an easy one to pick-up for that reason.

Scoville

Scoville is one of the games that drew me in because of theme. I love spicy peppers and a game about that sounds fun. I actually just finished a play of it on Board Game Arena and I enjoyed it. In fact, I didn’t order the game until I was part way through and realized that I was enjoying it a lot. You plan peppers and then harvest them trying to get the spiciest pepper combinations and trade those in for points. If it weren’t for the theme I’m not sure I’d have bought it, but for the theme and my love of spicy foods, I know it’ll get played once in a while.

Spooktacular

Now another one of the games where the theme just was for me. I love spooky things and horror movies. So why not a board game all about horror movies and horror movie monsters. I own games like Camp Grizzly and Final Girl where you are trying to survive. But what about a game where you are playing the horror movies themselves.

That is what Spooktacular is. You are in a movie theater and you are the horror movies escaping from the screen. And you want to kill guests and do it in the way that your movie wants to do it. I love that all the movies have that similar objective but they all do it in different ways. It seems like my sort of game that way.

Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship

This is one that I have been looking at for a long time. It is a pretty safe bet with my wife that she’ll be interested in any Lord of the Rings games. In fact we have a few that need to get played still, with her or others. But Fate of Fellowship is based off of the Pandemic system but is it’s own game. I like that there is more going on with it in terms of complexity. But also is going to use some elements that feel similar and familiar to things that we’ve played before. That is going to make this an easier to table game.

Frost Punk: The Board Game

Finally for the new games is Frost Punk. I finally got my hands on a used copy of this game. I wanted it for a long time because I think it sounds wonderful and pretty absurd. Now, I don’t mean absurd as in really goofy, I mean as in you are being asked to make crazy decisions. And I like that in a game.

It feels like the next step, kind of, in a Dead of Winter Crossroads style game. You make a decision if you have child labor, for example, as one of the options. Is that a right or wrong choice, who knows. It’ll hurt morale but give you more workers. And sometimes you need more workers more than you need morale. But that is the sort of thing that the game is going to ask you. And I am here for that.
