Back or Brick: Marvel Zombies

The hunger has taken hold of the Marvel Heroes. Will you be able to control the hunger or will it control you? Marvel Zombies is a Zombicide game from CMON where players play as the infected heroes against the uninfected. Or as heroes trying to stop the wave of oncoming zombies.

Pros

  • Marvel
  • Plays as Zombies or Heroes

Cons

  • Price
  • Shipping

The Page

CMON runs so many Kickstarter at this point. It should come as no shock that the page looks really good. And with that page, it comes with a lot of pictures of shiny minis. No surprise again there, most CMON games do.

But does this feel right for the page for the 50th CMON Kickstarter that they are running? That is a bigger question. It seemed like only a matter of time before we’d get a Marvel version of Zombicide. And going with a Marvel Zombies game where you can play as either the zombies or with the X-Men expansion as the heroes, that is different.

Generally, though, I feel like the campaign and page, thus far, are lacking anything that says it’s the 50th campaign. It feels like they dropped a massive IP project for it, but they just did He Man, we already have Marvel United and Marvel United X-Men. And CMON has put out 7, I think, versions of Zombicide or Zombicide games. So for a massive 50th campaign, we are under 24 hours and at $3.5 mil, but it only has a giant Galactus for bling.

Add in the price point for this game. Right now the cheapest level for the game is $130 + shipping. So it’s very expensive. The most expensive, with the massive Galactus is $410. And normally CMON has some add-ons. I hope that the add-ons are only cosmetic in this case. I don’t want to add on a hero pack of 10 more zombie heroes or super heroes. At the price, it should come with the pledge.

The Game

So while the page itself and the project might seem underwhelming for the 50th CMON Kickstarter, I think that the game doesn’t seem that way. Zombicide is an already well liked game, and while people have some issues with different versions, generally someone likes every version. And from players who love Zombicide, they are liking this game. Those who have had a chance to demo the game.

What intrigues me about this one is that you can play as Zombies or you can play as the Super Heroes. Granted, you need the Marvel Zombies X-Men Resistance to do that. So it is more of a cost, but it is a twist in general on Zombicide. No Zombicide game lets you play as the zombies. You always play as the heroes who are fighting off waves and waves of zombies. Here, as Zombie Super Heroes, you need to fight off SHIELD agents.

But along with that twist, the characters you play as, they also are fighting against the hunger. Now, that doesn’t mean they are trying to stop it. Instead they try to not let it completely overtake them. If it does, now they rush into battle where it’ll be easier to get defeated because they need brains. They need to feed.

Back or Brick

This is a Back for me. And for 13,000 plus people thus far. Like I said, it’s not even onto a full 24 hours yet and it’s made basically $3.5 million. I knew I would back this campaign. But I won’t lie, there is some sticker shock when I look at the price of this game. I am in right now at the $240 level, plus then shipping. I really want to get Galactus, but it is a big jump up to get him.

I firmly believe, because CMON consistently does this, that the value for the game will be there by the end of the game. I think that even the value for the giant Galactus will be there. If I get the game and I hate it, I’ll at least make my money back. And I highly doubt that I’ll hate the game.

What I really hope is that there aren’t too many add-ons. At this price tag, again I talk about it, it should come with considerably more than it does. I get that costs are up. Shipping is expensive. Plastic is more expensive. But the value needs to be better. I won’t cancel my pledge, but this is one that I totally get a wait and see approach for.

Is this game a Back or Brick for you?
