My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at LV999
Time to talk anime again with another anime with a long title. This one, though, is not an Isekai. My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at LV999 is a romance. And romance anime is a genre that I enjoy. Mix this with a story where there is an MMORPG (again not an isekai), and is this a combination that I like?
My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at LV999 – The Story
Akane is dumped by her boyfriend Takuma. And it’s all over a video game, the MMORPG, one that she wasn’t that interested in playing but she started playing because of Takuma. Then he dumps her for someone else he met in game. All of that is just insult to injury for Akane.
So, when there is a meet-up event for the game, Akane gets call prepped to go there and make Takuma feel jealous. Things don’t go as plan and when she panics, she accidentally ropes Yamada, a pro gamer and introvert, into her world with the lie that he’s her boyfriend. And while Yamada goes along with it, he’s only doing it for an in game bonus. Then, with what’s supposed to be a one time thing, they keep on running into each other, in real life and in the game.
Other Things to Know about My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at LV999
I generally do an about the anime section, or other things to know. It’s basically to let you know what the level of fan service in the anime. This one is very clean, actually. There isn’t much if any fan service as it’s written more as a pure romance. There is definitely comedy in there as well, but less than a lot of romance ones or anime where that comedy will be to lean into fan service.
This is also an anime that is coming out. There are a number of episodes out so far. But I am caught up with where it is already in terms of the dub. And the dub is good, so I think it’s solid to watch that way. But know that there is a chance you will catch up.
In My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at LV999, it does a good job of developing the story and the romance. This is not a two characters run into each other and immediately are deeply in love. They spend time with Akane and Yamada growing to like each other more. Akane is actually very opposed to gamers at the beginning and still hung up on her ex-boyfriend. So I like the slow roll and I like that they are still progressing things.
That could have been a negative because some anime or romance stories, the characters are always dancing around it. They both like each other, but do they know what they both like each other, why won’t either of them say anything? And that goes on for a long time, why, because the anime doesn’t have a premise beyond that. I like it when I start to see anime and manga work on developing relationships of characters and the growth throughout a dating process or a romance as well as just the when will they realize they like each other.
And finally, I really like the characters in this. There are a number of over the top ones surrounding the main characters. But the main characters are a bit more normal. Akane, especially, is a character who hasn’t been fully drawn into this video game world and the nerdier side of things. So it’s interesting and nice to see a take on a character who is falling in love with that side of things as well as with someone. Often times if someone starts to like nerdy things they are pulled back from it. Here it is slowly being drawn in.
This is a really fun anime and one that I definitely enjoyed. I’m pretty good about stopping an anime if it doesn’t immediately arrest my attention or goes too fan service-y. But My Love Story with Yamada-Kun at LV999 is just a good feeling anime. I like how it feels more real life than a lot of other anime as well. I could see this happening, maybe not to people I know, but as something that does happen.
And I think that is what makes it so much fun. It’s about characters who feel real. Their progressions feel real. The mistakes that they make along the way also feel real as well. So I’m excited for when more of this is going to get dubbed and come out.
