It’s time for a controversial list for sure. Snacks, do you allow them at the game table or not? And what are the best ones to have there? I know a lot of people don’t like snacks because you don’t want to get Cheetos dust on your games. And that is fair, that stuff will stain anything if you let it. But let’s figure out some better options for your game table.

Do You Allow Snacks At Your Game Table?

It’s a debated topic on a lot of channels. Do you even allow snacks to be at your game table. I know some people who that answer would be no. I find that odd, but I guess I can get it. That doesn’t mean that for a full day of playing board games that you don’t eat. You eat, but you just don’t eat at the game table. You take a pause, order pizza, and eat that elsewhere and then come back to game.

I think that there are snacks that are okay to eat at game night. I also look at games as something that are meant to be shared, handled, and possibly replaced if need be. Now I might own a grail game that I want to keep food away from because it costs a lot and more so is out of print. But that’d be an exception. So let’s see what snacks would be an option.

Top 5 Snacks For Game Nights

Pretzels

When you hear people talk about game day snacks for you board game time, pretzels is a super common one for acceptable ones. This is mainly because they don’t make a big mess. The salt falling off is the most likely thing. And they don’t leave anything on fingers. So sure, you might get a crumb here and there, but not much.

Crackers & Cheese

Crackers and cheese is another solid option when it comes to snacks. They are a little bit greasier, depending on the cheese and cracker. Or even if you add in salami or sausage of some sort. But a napkin is easy enough to use. And they aren’t something that is going to fall apart on the table or slash any sauce of any sort.

Cookies

Cookies, much like crackers have that greasy problem to them. But besides that and a few crumbs they are a great snack for a game night. No sauce or anything to create a mess. If you play in a warm room the chocolate chips might melt so just be aware, but not all cookies need chocolate chips. And that is minimal enough risk when it comes to my snacks.

Veggies

Veggies is probably the most controversial one on my list. And that is mainly because yes, I would have dip for them as well. I like carrot sticks and other veggies without dips, but most snack trays come with dips. At the same time, when you have people eating snacks at the game table, they should be smart enough to eat over their plate and not make a mess.

Wontons

Finally one that is heated up. I won’t lie and say I didn’t think of some more shocking snacks. But I’ll talk about them below. But wontons work well as snacks. Yes, you can dip them in sweat and sour sauce and that is sauce at the table. But that’s generally very minimal and not that runny. And the cheese is contained nicely for snacking convenience. If you buy the frozen wontons you just do them in the oven or an air fryer and the grease is minimal as well.

Final Thoughts on Board Game Snacks

Now let me shock you. I also do chips and dip, BBQ meatballs, little smokies, and other things for game night, and I don’t care. Yes, those snacks are messier, but we’re all adults here and is the table or a game gets a little stains, probably not going to ruin it. Or we’re playing a $15 card game and I can replace that. Now, sure there are probably games that I’d be less likely to pull out with those messier snacks.

But this is a time to spend with people and have a good time. And I find that people end up getting hangry if there aren’t snacks. And I’d prefer to risk a dollop of salsa on my game that immediately gets cleaned up and causes no issue, versus play with people who are cranky because we don’t have snacks. But there are some snacks, wings or other very messy finger foods, that just won’t be allowed.
