April New To Me Games (Part 1)
We’re onto the month of April now and getting close to caught up. What new to me games did I play in April. And how much did it help me get closer on my way to 1000 Games rated on Board Game Geek. If you’re just jumping in now, I’m over 800 games rated and over 900 games and expansions. What do you think should be game number 1000, probably in next year.
April Games (Part 1)
Tipperary
I enjoy tile laying games. And Tipperary is a fun one though not my favorite of the genre. In this game you are building out groups of tiles that are going to score you points in different ways. The game is simple and there are better tile games for me. But if you want one that is going to be less of a looker but easier to teach than some, this might work. Though, everything scoring differently is a challenge.
Wondrous Creatures
Wonderous Creatures is a game that I own but that I need to play my copy of. I think I’ll find that I like it more in person. This game is all about collecting resources and then turning those in for points in different ways as well as collecting eggs and using those powers. The game is pretty light when you get down to it, but it’s one that works okay on BGA. And I think I’ll enjoy studying what I need to get done more in person.
Wispwood
Wispwood is a game that surprised me in some ways. I don’t love the game, but I think it’s really good. It’s a lighter game of tile drafting into various shapes and then you score points based off of what ability/token is next o that tile. And you build up a grid that grows bigger and bigger every around. Of course, the tiles have Tetris type shapes and some stay in play, the scoring ones, so that becomes more of puzzle to build. One that I kind of want to go back to again.
Splendor Duel
I am so-so on Splendor. It’s a fine game, but I’ve played it and I’m kind of done with it. I was worried that Splendor Duel would be the same. But I think Splendor Dule is a better game than Splendor. The choices are more interesting. And while a lot of elements are similar, you still build up your gems to discount getting more for points, there are more ways to win and it’s just a more fun challenge. And as a two player game, you get better back and forth.
Digging for Dinos
Digging for Dinos is a complete surprise for me. I thought that this was going to be a dumb little game of collecting dino parts. And in some ways it is exactly that. But how you do that, moving and then flipping pieces so you can set-up turns is a lot of fun. And trying to get that complete dino for the bonus points works. It’s a good filler/fast game, but honestly has more thinking than you’d expect.
The Massive-Verse Fighting Card Game
This really disappointed me. I like a lot of two player fighting games but like Neon Reign, I thought that it was okay. I want those games to give me the feeling of being clever, but instead, I just kind of felt like I was guessing what to play. It reached the point where I was waiting for it to be done, but I wanted to see if I was missing something. I have determined that I wasn’t missing much. I think I could find more strategy going back again, and maybe playing in person. But I don’t want to.
Visions
Vision is another game that I don’t find fun. It’s a game of collecting different dream cards and putting them in groups. The more you can line-up colors and symbols the more points you get. I feel like there are games like this, honestly reminds me of Up or Down, that do it a whole lot better.
Daybreak
I know people like Daybreak. This is a tough cooperative game where you are trying to save the planet from overheating by creating sustainable energy. Cool theme there, but the game is just a lot going on. Now maybe it is easier in person where you can really table talk through the whole thing. But it’s a game that feels prone for alpha gaming and just isn’t that fun when you get down to it.
TROK
TROK is a little set collection game, or not so little, where you put cards up for the draft and then draft from what your opponent put out there to create sets for points and runs for powers. It’s fun to play and one that I think offers interesting choices as for when you go for points versus powers which can mean more points later.
Dragon Keeper: The Dungeon
This is meh abstract game of moving around a board and collecting tiles. You get points from the tiles and you give points to your opponents. But if you give them the right color of points they count against them, if I remember correctly. So you are trying to keep track of what they are avoiding and using your knowledge of what you don’t want to hurt them. It’s a pretty vanilla game for me and an easy pass.
Zombicide: 2nd Edition
I give them game an 8 on BGG because I know I like Zombicide. I won’t own 2nd Edition because I own Marvel Zombies. And I’m unlikely to play it again on BGA. Mainly because Zombicide is a beer and pretzels dice chucking fun game. That gets lost on BGA. Now that doesn’t make it bad, I really liked both of my plays, but you lose some from the game.
