March New To Me Games (Part 2)

We’re onto the second part of March. And I think that we’re going to get this done in two parts this month. Some months are fewer plays on my way to 1000 Games rated on Board Game Geek. So let’s see which games are getting played in March. And this one might have just over more than 10 to talk about, plus, of course my highlight games for the month of March.

March (Part 2)

War Chest

War Chest is trying to become a classic abstract game like a Chess or others. This is a war game where you are drafting your army and drawing out tokens trying to get control of points on the board. Your opponent can come and attack you and take control of them. So it is a fighting game, but also an area control game. It’s very abstract and I get why people like it. I know that these types of abstract games are not for me.

Solstis

Solstis is a pretty easy card collection game where you spend cards from your hand to get cards and place them onto your mountain. You want to create paths up but also groups of cards to score points. Honestly the most interesting element is how you get cards onto your mountain. You need to match cards from your hand either by color or number. And as you do, those will then slot into your grid. It’s a pretty big game, space wise for being a very light game.

Hot Streak

Hot Streak is the first of my in person games, two of them, for this part of the list. If I remember correctly we played Hot Streak three times in one night. It’s a silly racing game where you don’t have your own racer. Instead you bet on who you think is going to win in a mascot race. But like a good mascot race, anything can happen. And you control that, a little, but a card that you add to a deck of actions. It’s simple, it’s goofy, and it’s one that I think most people will enjoy.

Railroad Tiles

Railroad Tiles is the other game that I played in person. I like Railroad Ink a lot, though I need to get it played more. But Railroad Tiles is kind of a follow-up to that. Instead of having a nice little grid, you are building up your routes on the table. And you do this by drafting tiles and then you score points, each round, based off of what trains you have in play and how they connect. Or it might not be trains, because you have roads and passengers as well. It’s fun, I want to try it with the modules because I want a bit more.

Tally Up

Tally Up is a very meh game for me. It reminds me of a game like Farkle in some ways where you roll dice and you decide when you want to stop. If you push too far, you don’t get your points. If you stop, you bank them. But this one has a shared die pool so when it’s your turn, your opponents are deciding when to stop as well. It’s barely a game and there are better push your luck games out there.

Dungeon Rummy

Dungeon Rummy is a tough game where you are a hero exploring a dungeon and you need to create sets of cards to defeat the monsters. I think that it works pretty well and on BGA that it’s pretty fun. I wonder if I might find that I like it more in person. Mainly because I think having a little table talk would be nice for this. But mainly it was just pretty fun and pretty hard, not sure if the fun is enough to make-up for the hard.

Emberleaf

Emberleaf, a game that I own but I need to play my copy of still. On BGA, Emberleaf is a fun game of playing out creatures, sliding them around your board, and off, to trigger affects and abilities while you try and build up the woodlands. There is a lot going on in this game. I like it on BGA, but I think I’d find that I would like it a whole lot more in person.

Soothsayers

Soothsayers is another game that I’d consider just to be pretty fun. The game is great looking with fun tarot card artwork on it. You are collecting in several different areas trying to get the highest numbers, that gets you points, and then get tarot cards for points as well. It also uses an mechanism I like. I pick and action and you get to follow, so there is strategy in that. That said, the same didn’t feel like it had a ton more to offer on multiple plays.

Tatsu

Tatsu is an abstract dice game and one that is pretty good. As you play the game you are trying to capture your opponents pieces or claim certain spots to get more pieces. It’s an interesting puzzle of a game. Now, the downside is that there is dice rolling so if I roll the right numbers I can beat you because of that. Now there is strategy as to what pieces you get out and what powers they have, but it’s still only okay for me, because of that.

Easy Peasy

Easy Peasy is a game that reminds me in some ways of Silver or games like that. Where you know some of your cards and you want to get rid of your cards and then call for the end of the round when you think you have the fewest points. It’s fine but it didn’t blow me away. I think that I’m more apt to get a game like Silver back again or pick-up Scram, which is a team version of Silver than play Easy Peasy some more.

Top 5 Games From March

5. Emberleaf

Emberleaf makes it because it feels different in some ways. They call the mechanism card dancing, for the card movement. I don’t know if I feel that, but it’s a fun mechanism and it’s a good puzzle of picking the right cards to add to your hand and then collecting resources and goals.

4. Railroad Tiles

This might move up as I play with the bonus scoring modules or other modules in the game. The base game is very simple and good fun, but it didn’t blow me away. I think that I want more with it, but good thing is it comes with more in the box. And the base game is simple enough that I think with my family it would work that way.

3. Vantage

Vantage is a wonderful time, but one that I’ll only play with some people. The big world reminds me of games that I love like Sleeping Gods and Tainted Grail. But Vantage is a notably shorter time frame. I have only played at two and I have heard that more is maybe not as good. Mainly because the more folks the more time between turns and the longer the game goes, potentially.

2. Regicide Legacy

I love Regicide Legacy, it’s a great legacy game and basic Regicide is a great system as well. This gives you the twists and turns that you’d want. If you want a good solo legacy game, I think this one works well. There are other legacy games that I like solo as well, but in terms of set-up and ease to the table, Regicide Legacy is really good.

1. Hot Streak

Hot Streak is my top of the games that I played in March. This is just a fun and silly game. It won’t go with the theme for this months board game night but it’s one that I might still play anyways. It’s just a good time as you sit around and hope that the mascots aren’t idiots. Spoilers, the mascots are generally going to be idiots.
