Board Game News – Sagrada Legacy Announcement
One trend that has been fairly hot has been Legacy board games. Now, it’s not that prolific a trend, but people take note when a board game comes out with the word “Legacy” put on it. This type of game really took off when Pandemic Legacy Season 1 became one of the most popular and highest rated games on Board Game Geek. Well, we have news that sounds like another legacy game coming out.
Now, that’s all we know about it thus far, really, is that we are getting a legacy version of Sagrada, so this is where the news ends, let’s talk about some speculation.
Game Speculation
Not all of these ideas are my own, I got one of them from an eagle-eyed person (or someone who caught what I missed) over on the Man vs Meeple discord server.
Roll and Write?
The starting point will be that item they noticed. If you look behind the word Legacy, it appears that it is written on a pencil. Currently there are zero pencils in the base game or expansions for Sagrada. So what might this mean? Over on the discord server they speculated that it was maybe going to be a roll and write, but I personally am guessing that it won’t be that. I’m instead guessing that we’re going to see it as some sort of unlock tracking.
In the base game of Sagrada, you have tools, abilities, that you can use. My guess is that players will be tracking which ones they have unlocked for use. Maybe the more you score in a game the more different things you can unlock. Also, the pencil is purple, I think it’d be reading into it, but maybe colored pencils. Why would you need colored pencils, well, maybe you can make color requirements on your stained glass windows, like in the base game, and that would give you more points or increase the challenge rating of a window.
Cathedral?
First a little bit of history, the Sagrada Familia is a cathedral that is being built in Barcelona. Construction started in 1883, and in 2015, it was declared to have been 70% done. I think that players will all be artists working on building the Sagrada Familia (or in general just a cathedral). I’m thinking the goal of the whole game might actually be a race to complete the whole thing, and depending on scoring, you’ll move up on a track or track somehow, how much of the cathedral you have finished.
Retiring Windows?
Something that I don’t know would happen, and this one is probably the furthest out speculation for the game, but an interesting to me idea. I think it could be interesting to retire windows. Each player gets their own set of windows that they play off of, and the easy windows are obviously easier, but, you can retire a window, aka, put it into your cathedral. Once it’s there you can’t go back and play with it again, but it gives some sort of bonus, or something along those lines. It could be a higher score a the end of the game or giving you more chances to use your tools or both. But I want something that would push you into making an interesting decision for the game, when to stop using the easier one and get that extra bonus.
Obviously a lot of speculation on my behalf. But I like legacy games and I like Sagrada a lot, so I’m very curious to see what a legacy version could look like.
Do you like legacy games? Does a legacy version of Sagrada sound interesting?
