World Series of Board Gaming Announcement

Yup, we have some news. And this is crazy news, board gaming has had world championships before. At GenCon there are a lot of tournaments run. I competed in one myself with Icecool, but they are generally only decently sized. Unless it is something like Magic: The Gathering, you won’t get a large number of gamers. But this might be different. This is the World Series of Board Gaming.

What Is This?

It’s basically a giant board game tournament. There will be 16 selected board games that are played and you pick which one you enter in, from what I understood. However, if you are the best, you advance and the next game will be randomly selected and one you and your opponents haven’t played.

Really, this is kind of like the WSOP (World Series of Poker) but for board games. And you are changing out, you basically get down tot he final table and you can win $25k. Plus if you are the best at any of the 16 games you get a ring.

All the details are at the start of the video that we know thus far.

When Is It Happening?

Next year, there is a countdown at the top but end of September to very beginning of October, five total days.

What Does This Mean For Board Gaming?

Honestly, it’s hard to predict at this point. I hope this is something big, but I also don’t want board games to go away from being something that you play with your friends or family when you get together. There is a concern, for me, at least, if this does get really big that there will be some games that become the hot game every year because they’ll be part of the World Series of Board Games. And that people will start to become even more competitive in games and take away some of the fun.

On the flip side, this could just mean it puts board games in front of a lot more people. If this takes off people will hear about it and wonder what it’s about. The WSOP is on TV, would board games ever do that, I’ve seen Scrabble on ESPN before. And more people into the hobby is always a really good thing. And it should mean that more and interesting games are created.

So What Are The Games?

That is too be determined. But I think it’s interesting to consider. These games are not going to be luck heavy games. That said, if they are only from start of game strategy, that isn’t as interesting as well. So for me, I’m guessing it’ll mainly be games with a good amount of strategy you can plan from the start of the game, but enough luck to keep players on their toes. They will be announced throughout this month, though, so you’ll have about a year to get really good at them.

Let me know what games you think might make-up the 16?
